Abstract:Electrospinning (ES) enables simple production of fibers for broad applications (e.g., biomedical engineering, energy storage, and electronics). However, resulting structures are predominantly random; displaying significant disordered fiber entanglement, which inevitably gives rise to structural variations and reproducibility on the micron scale. Surface and structural features on this scale are critical for biomaterials, tissue engineering, and pharmaceutical sciences. In this letter, a modified ES technique using a rotating multi-nozzle emitter is developed and utilized to fabricate continuous micron-scaled polycaprolactone (PCL) ropes, providing control on fiber intercalation (twist) and structural order. Micron-scaled ropes comprising 312 twists per millimeter are generated, and rope diameter and pitch length are regulated using polymer concentration and process parameters. Electric field simulations confirm vector and distribution mechanisms, which influence fiber orientation and deposition during the process. The modified fabrication system provides much needed control on reproducibility and fiber entanglement which is crucial for electrospun biomedical materials.

Abstract:A new family of mechanochromic photonic-crystal fibers exhibits tunable structural colors under stretching. This novel mechanochromic fiber is prepared by depositing polymer microspheres onto a continuous aligned-carbon-nanotube sheet that has been wound on an elastic poly(dimethylsiloxane) fiber, followed by further embedding in poly(dimethylsiloxane). The color of the fiber can be tuned by varying the size and the center-to-center distance of the polymer spheres. It further experiences reversible and rapid multicolor changes during the stretch and release processes, for example, between red, green, and blue. Both the high sensitivity and stability were maintained after 1000 deformation cycles. These elastic photonic-crystal fibers were woven into patterns and smart fabrics for various display and sensing applications.

Abstract:Continuous mechanoluminescence (ML) fibers and fiber-woven textiles have the potential to serve as new wearable devices for sensors, healthcare, human—computer interfacing, and Internet of Things. Considering the demands on wearability and adaptability for the ML textiles, it is essential to realize the continuous synthesis of fiber, while maintaining a desired small diameter. Here, we develop a novel adhere-coating method to fabricate ML composite fiber, consisting of a thin polyurethane (PU) core and ZnS:Cu/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) shell, with the outer diameter of 120 μm. By diluting PDMS to tune the thickness of liquid coating layer, droplets formation has been effectively prevented. The composite fiber exhibits a smooth surface structure and superior ML performances, including high brightness, excellent flexibility, and stability. In addition, a weft knitting textile fabricated by the continuous ML fiber can be easily delighted by manually stretching, and the ML fibers can emit visible signals upon human motion stimuli when woven into commercial cloth. Such continuous ultra-fine ML fibers are promising as wearable sensing devices for human motion detection and human—machine interactions.

Abstract:Mechanochromic photonic fibers can realize a visual dynamic color response to external stimuli, and are widely used in colorimetric sensing, smart display, and medical care. At present, colloidal crystals-based mechanochromic photonic fibers with a core-sheath structure have been successfully prepared by electrophoretic deposition and dip-coating. However, problems such as the complicated preparation process and the limited range of color change are still unsolved and hinder the applications of mechanochromic photonic fibers. Here, a mechanochromic photonic fiber with a wide color shift range is prepared by a simple and effective strategy. The fiber is fabricated by coating elastic rubber containing a non-close-packed array of silica particles onto spandex yarn. The obtained photonic fiber displays a structural color that can be controlled by adjusting the diameter and volume fraction of silica particles. Under stretching, the fiber shifts from red to blue with a color change range of 127 nm. More importantly, it achieves reversible color change in the visible range under mechanical strain. These mechanochromic photonic fibers based on colloidal crystals and spandex yarns are promising for smart wearables, display textiles, and visual sensors.

Abstract:Fiber-based sensor based on the core-sheath structure has drawn increasing attention in the strain sensing and self-powered fields because of its various advantages (e.g., lightweight, small size, flexibility and ease of weavability into soft textile, etc.). However, it still has been challenging to continuously fabricate core-sheath fiber with good interfacial interaction. Herein, a core-sheath fiber was continuously fabricated by melt co-extrusion molding method, whose sheath layer and core layer are respectively pure polystyrene polybutadiene polystyrene (SBS) and SBS/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SBS/MWCNTs) composite. In view of this, exhibits good compatibility occurs between core layer and sheath layer because they share the same SBS phase. Moreover, with the help of sheath layer, core layer can be effectively prevented the environmental damage. Fiber strain sensor based on such core-sheath fiber exhibits a higher sensitivity (i.e., GF = 106341), wider working range (strain of 0–200 %) and shorter response time (50 ms), which can further perform underwater communication and underwater motion monitoring. Furthermore, based on such core-sheath fiber, fiber triboelectric generator (F-TENG) and textile triboelectric generator (T-TENG) have been successfully developed and they can respectively serve as self-powered bionic whisker (SPBW) and mechanical energy harvester (MEH). This study provides a facile, low-cost, continuous and environmentally friendly method to fabricate core-sheath fiber, paving a new pathway to develop fiber with strain sensing and self-powered sensing performance.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have shown great promise in various fields owing to their fascinating properties. However, most of high-performance CDs are usually synthesized upon intermittent operations, which are difficult to produce continuously in batch. In this regard, we develop a robust aluminum-based microfluidic chip reaction platform with imbibition-injection cycle feeding and ease of scale-up production, allowing the rapid and continuous synthesis of highly fluorescent CDs. The as-prepared CDs possess excellent optical properties, including high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) of 71%, narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 65 nm by optimizing the parameters of reaction. Combined with electro-microfluidic spinning, the continuous production of fluorescent enriched CDs/polymer nanofibers could further be realized. CDs/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and CDs/polyamide 6,6 (PA66) nanofibers are prepared to exhibit enhanced mechanical properties with tensile strength 2.9 and 4.1 times higher than those of the pure polymer matrix, respectively. This work contributes a new kind of microfluidic chip for nanomaterial synthesis, and paves a way toward rapid and continuous preparation of high-performance CDs and CDs/polymers nanofiber films by microfluidic techniques.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers have demonstrated promising optoelectronic properties, but their brittleness and poor mechanical characteristics have hindered their fabrication into durable fibers and textiles. Here, we report a universal approach to continuously producing highly strong, ultratough conjugated polymer fibers using a flow-enhanced crystallization (FLEX) method. These fibers exhibit one order of magnitude higher tensile strength (>200 megapascals) and toughness (>80 megajoules per cubic meter) than traditional semiconducting polymer fibers and films, outperforming many synthetic fibers, ready for scalable production. These fibers also exhibit unique strain-enhanced electronic properties and exceptional performance when used as stretchable conductors, thermoelectrics, transistors, and sensors. This work not only highlights the influence of fluid mechanical effects on the crystallization and mechanical properties of conjugated polymers but also opens up exciting possibilities for integrating these functional fibers into wearable electronics.

Abstract:A scalable and green approach to manufacture semiconducting microfibers from polymer melts has been demonstrated. The polymer chains are highly aligned along the microfiber's long axis direction and exhibit highly anisotropic optical properties. In addition, the polymer microfibers show good flexibility and stretchability with a yield point around 10% under a reversible stress and can be stretched up to 180% without breaking. These features are desired for future flexible, stretchable, and conformable electronics. The origin of this stretchability is studied with diketopyrrolopyrrole derivatives using different conjugation break spacers and side chains. In addition, stretchable conducting microfibers can be obtained by doping with FeCl3, which are further evaluated as organic conductors and source/drain electrodes in organic field‐effect transistors.

Abstract:Compared with synthetic polymer fibers, animal silks have apparent advantages of sustainability, mechanical properties, and air and humidity permeability. However, the functionalization of animal silk at a single fiber scale is not yet fully developed. Herein, a low-cost, effective, and scalable strategy was developed to functionalize the native silk by combining continuous force-reeling and dip-coating techniques. With this approach, conduc-tive and color-programmable silk with extremely long length (larger than one kilometer), high mechanical performance (with a strength of 516 & PLUSMN; 66 MPa, toughness of 114 & PLUSMN; 25 MJ m(-3), comparable to spider dragline silk), and good interface bonding between silk and functional layer were developed. These functionalized silks were directly used as a highly sensitive mechanical sensor in extreme environments, such as in liquid nitrogen and water. In addition, these fibers were automatically woven into large-scale washable dynamic coloring and luminous fabrics. These intelligent fabrics exhibit rapid, programmable, and recyclable thermochromic and electroluminescent responses, showing promising applications in dynamical textile displays.

Abstract:A kind of pressure visualization fiber with core‐shell structure was prepared by coaxial spinning. In this study, pressure visual fibers (PVF) with a core‐shell structure were prepared using a coaxial wet spinning process. The fiber composite shell consists of a luminescent material (as a light source) and a thermochromic pigment (as a filter light source) mixed with a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) matrix. The fiber core layer, on the other hand, was made of gallium‐indium alloy liquid metal. In operation, the filter light source is activated by joule heat drive (resulting in the fading of the thermochromic pigment), and the PVF releases phosphorescence upon exposure to ultraviolet light. When a certain pressure is applied to the fiber shell, the liquid metal in the core layer is squeezed, resulting in a local cross‐sectional area reduction, an increase in local joule thermal power, and thus local discoloration. This localized compression, in combination with a small rated current and the presence of an ultraviolet light source, converts the mechanical force (strain and compression) into an optical response. The excellent electrical conductivity of the liquid metal, combined with its compatibility with the soft matrix, makes it a promising candidate for applications in smart textiles and flexible sensing. Highlights The technology of visual fiber controlled by current is presented. The bendability and controllability of visual composites are improved. The composite fiber can be visualized when stressed.

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose-Based Meter-Long Structurally Colored Fibers for Advanced Fabrics

Abstract:Structurally colored fibers are attractive alternatives to chemically colored fibers due to their rich optical properties, color stability, and environmental friendliness. However, the fabrication of structurally colored fibers using cost-effective raw materials with the possibility to scale up remains challenging. Here, a simple and scalable approach is developed to fabricate continuous meter-long structurally colored fibers exhibiting brilliant structural colors across the visible spectrum and helix orientation-dependent polarization states. The fibers are fabricated by extrusion of concentrated aqueous solutions of chemically crosslinked hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC). The wavelengths and polarization states can be tuned by solution concentration, relaxation time, and collector's surface energy. The HPC-based structurally colored fibers display excellent optical stability to mechanical straining, repeated drying/water impregnation, and prolonged heating at 150 °C. It is demonstrated that the HPC-based structurally colored fibers can be woven into structurally colored fabrics with wavelength- and polarization-coded optical patterns. The current work presents a strategy to tune the chiral nematic order, which constitutes an important step toward mass production of structurally colored fibers with stable and rich optical properties using easily available raw materials.

Abstract:A mechanophore of spiropyran (SP) derivative is synthesized and chemically incorporated into a liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) network. The prepared SP‐LCE materials demonstrate superior mechanochromic performances. The mechanochromic sensitivity is substantially enhanced by doping the SP‐LCE matrix with nano zinc oxide such that it is easy to write on the material surface by using a thin iron wire. Spiropyran (SP) based mechanochromic systems are intensively interesting in the research area of mechanochromic materials. Herein, an SP mechanophore is chemically incorporated into a liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) network through Michael addition. The rigidity of mesogens and the orientation of polymer main chains, in which the aligned mesogens and SP moieties are covalently attached, facilitate the transduction of applied force to SP mechanophore to trigger mechanochromic reaction. The LCE network provides enough elasticity for mechanochromic activation. The obtained SP‐LCEs demonstrate strong and reversible mechanochromic response upon mechanical compression. The mechanochromic efficiency and sensitivity are substantially enhanced by doping the SP‐LCE matrix with nano zinc oxide such that it is easy to write on the material surface by using a thin iron wire. The authors hope such SP‐LCE materials will be further developed for real‐time stress detection applications.

Abstract:Mechanically responsive textiles have transformative potential in many areas from fashion to healthcare. Cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers have strong mechanochromic responses that offer attractive opportunities for such applications. Nonetheless, making liquid crystalline elastomer fibres suitable for textiles is challenging since the Plateau–Rayleigh instability tends to break up precursor solutions into droplets. Here, we report a simple approach that balances the viscoelastic properties of the precursor solution to avoid this outcome and achieve long and mechanically robust cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer filaments. These filaments have fast, progressive and reversible mechanochromic responses, from red to blue (wavelength shift of 155 nm), when stretched up to 200%. Moreover, the fibres can be sewed into garments and withstand repeated stretching and regular machine washing. This approach and resulting fibres may be useful for applications in wearable technology and other areas benefiting from autonomous strain sensing or detection of critically strong deformations.

Abstract:Inspired by intriguing color changeable ability of natural animals, the design and fabrication of artificial mechanochromic materials capable of changing colors upon stretching or pressing have attracted intense scientific interest. Liquid crystal (LC) is a self‐organized soft matter with anisotropic molecular alignment. Due to the sensitivity to various external stimulations, LC has been considered as an emerging and appealing responsive building block to construct intelligent materials and advanced devices. Recently, mechanochromic LC materials have becoming a hot topic in multi fields from flexible artificial skins to visualized sensors and smart biomimetic devices. In this review, the recent progress of mechanochromic LCs is comprehensively summarized. Firstly, the mechanism and functionalities of mechanochromic LC is introduced, followed by preparation of various functional materials based on mechanochromic LCs. Then the applications of mechanochromic LCs are provided. Finally, the conclusion and outlooks of this field is given. This overview is hoped to provide inspiration in fabrication of advanced functional soft materials for scientists and engineers from multidisciplines including materials science, elastomers, chemistry and physical science. Flexible thermochromic fabrics enabling dynamic colored display

Abstract:Color-changeable fibers can provide diverse functions for intelligent wearable devices such as novel information displays and human-machine interfaces when woven into fabric. This work develops a low-cost, effective, and scalable strategy to produce thermochromic fibers by wet spinning. Through a combination of different thermochromic microcapsules, flexible fibers with abundant and reversible color changes are obtained. These color changes can be clearly observed by the naked eye. It is also found that the fibers exhibit excellent color-changing stability even after 8000 thermal cycles. Moreover, the thermochromic fibers can be fabricated on a large scale and easily woven or implanted into various fabrics with good mechanical performance. Driven by their good mechanical and physical characteristics, applications of thermochromic fibers in dynamic colored display are demonstrated. Dynamic quick response (QR) code display and recognition are successfully realized with thermochromic fabrics. This work well confirms the potential applications of thermochromic fibers in smart textiles, wearable devices, flexible displays, and human-machine interfaces.
Fabricating Continuous Supercapacitor Fibers with High Performances by Integrating All Building Materials and Steps into One Process

Abstract:Supercapacitor fibers are rapidly produced in minutes by an integrated one-step fabrication process. This method is simple and efficient for large production. A variety of pseudocapacitive active materials including graphene oxide, metal oxide, and conducting polymers can be incorporated. The resulting all-solid-state supercapacitor fibers show remarkable energy-storage capabilities with both high power and energy densities.
