Abstract:Colorimetric mechanophores, which change color through force-induced covalent bond breakage, have been incorporated into polymer chains to create mechanochromic materials. However, the color change of most mechanophores is a turn-on response. In this work, we designed and synthesized a novel mechanoluminescent polymer system, PBA-SP-P(MMA-co-NBD), based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) with spiropyran (SP) as a force-activated "on/off mechanophore acceptor and nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) as a fluorescent donor. It is a comb polymer having NBD-bearing poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) side chains grafted onto a poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) backbone through SP groups. The processed polymer yields a morphology having NBD-containing PMMA nanodomains embedded into a PBA matrix with SP at the interface. The distance between NBD and SP functionalities is less than 10 nm with confinement of the nanophase separation, which effectively facilitates their fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Under uniaxial stretch, the materials change color at strains as low as about 18% and undergo a green-to-red fluorescence color switch. The two colors are ratiometric, exhibiting a linear correlation with strain after the onset of mechanoactivation. The color change is greatly enhanced right after failure. The fluorescence emission performance can be well controlled through regulating the PMMA/PBA and SP/NBD ratios in the synthesis. The synthesized polymer system exhibits a good potential as an indicator in monitoring microscale cut damages.
Highly Bright And Stable Electroluminescent Devices With Extraordinary Stretchability And Ultraconformability

Abstract:A stretchable and conformable alternating current electroluminescent device having a recordmaximumluminance of 450 cd m(-2) is fabricated. When stretched, the luminance of the device monotonously reduces but still retains as high as 100 cd m(-2) luminance at 500% strain. The device performance is stable in terms of mechanical robustness, cycling stretching stability, and long term stability. The high performance is achieved by using a new dielectric matrix (poly(styrene(144)-b-butyl acrylate(938)-b-styrene(144))) for ZnS: Cu particles and a new solvent-free ionic conductor of the diblock copolymer of (ethylene glycol)(9) methyl ether acrylate and n-butyl acrylate as transparent electrodes.

Abstract:A novel type of lightweight and stretchable light-emitting fabric is developed with the highest brightness that is above 70 cd m−2. The brightness of the stretchable light-emitting fabric can be maintained at 98.5% even after stretching for 100 cycles at a strain of 100% with a stretching speed of 10% strain per s. This stretchable light-emitting fabric is further integrated with different colors of light-emitting modules for display. It is also able to detect external stimuli such as pressure, accompanying this detection with a visual feedback.

Abstract:A flexible mechanoluminophore device that is capable of converting mechanical energy into visualizable patterns through light-emission holds great promise in many applications, such as human-machine interfaces, Internet of Things, wearables, etc. However, the development has been very nascent, and more importantly, existing mechanoluminophore materials or devices emit light that cannot be discernible under ambient light, in particular with slight applied force or deformation. Here we report the development of a low-cost flexible organic mechanoluminophore device, which is constructed based on the multi-layered integration of a high-efficiency, high-contrast top-emitting organic light-emitting device and a piezoelectric generator on a thin polymer substrate. The device is rationalized based on a high-performance top-emitting organic light-emitting device design and maximized piezoelectric generator output through a bending stress optimization and have demonstrated that it is discernible under an ambient illumination as high as 3000 lux. A flexible multifunctional anti-counterfeiting device is further developed by integrating patterned electro-responsive and photo-responsive organic emitters onto the flexible organic mechanoluminophore device, capable of converting mechanical, electrical, and/or optical inputs into light emission and patterned displays.

Abstract:With a unique type of luminescence, mechanoluminescent materials have begun drawing increasing research interest. In particular, due to high efficiency of energy conversion of mechanical force to light emission, low mechanoluminescence threshold, and recoverable mechanoluminescent property, materials with elastic mechanoluminescence have demonstrated great application potential in stress monitoring, self-powered sensing, biological health monitoring, and smart wearables, among others. Mechanoluminescent optical fibers simultaneously possess the mechanoluminescent property and the advantages of optical fibers, such as the wave guiding function, small size, low weight, high flexibility, and excellent integrability. Compared with the bulky and film-shaped materials, mechanoluminescent optical fibers can convert stress or strain into light emission more efficiently owing to their fibrous shape. Moreover, mechanoluminescent optical fibers can perform the collection and long-distance transmission of mechanoluminescence signals through their waveguiding structure, thus further expanding their application range. In this short review, we first briefly introduce the classification, characteristics, and mechanism of mechanoluminescent materials. Based on this, different kinds of mechanoluminescent optical fibers, their fabrication methods, and potential applications are presented. Finally, we forecast the future development of mechanoluminescent optical fibers.

Abstract:Transparent mechanoluminescent films are designed by incorporating a series of lanthanides‐doped MgF2 into PDMS. Moreover, potential applications of these films are demonstrated in some sports such as skydiving and bungee jumping. Mechanoluminescent materials have gained considerable attention over the past two decades because of their ability to convert wasted mechanical actions, such as friction and compression, into useful light energy. Despite great advances in this field, host matrices that are considered for immobilizing luminescent centers to realize mechanoluminescence are limited mainly to sulfides, oxysalts, and oxysulfides to some extent. To address this shortcoming, a new series of mechanoluminescent materials, i.e., lanthanide‐doped MgF2 (Lanthanide = Yb3+,2+, Tm3+, Dy3+, Tb3+, Eu3+,2+, Sm3+, Ho3+, and Er3+) are presented. Upon stimulation with external mechanical stress, all the materials exhibit mechanoluminescence, covering the spectral range of 385 to 1000 nm. Based on this and transparent Ln‐doped MgF2@Elastomer, the potential value of these mechanoluminescent materials in dynamic pressure visualization is expanded for certain new applications, such as bungee jumping and trampolining. These findings are expected to provide valuable information to the materials community.

Abstract:Mechanoluminescent (ML) fibers and textiles enable stress visualization without auxiliary power, showing great potential in wearable electronics, machine vision, and human-computer interaction. However, traditional ML devices suffer from inefficient stress transfer in soft-rigid material systems, leading to low luminescence brightness and short cycle life. Here, we propose a tendon-inspired scale-bridging mechanics transfer mechanism for ML composites, which employs molecular-scale copolymerized cross-linking and nanoscale inorganic nanoparticles as hierarchical stress transfer sites. This strategy effectively reduces the dissipation of stress in molecular chain segments and alleviates local stress concentration, increases luminescence by 9 times, and extends cycle life to more than 10,000 times. Furthermore, a scalable (kilometer-scale) anti-Plateau-Rayleigh instability manufacturing technology is developed for thermoset ML fibers, compatible with various existing textile techniques. We also demonstrate its system-level applications in motion capture, underwater interaction, etc., providing a feasible strategy for the next generation of smart visual textiles.

Abstract:A new family of mechanochromic photonic-crystal fibers exhibits tunable structural colors under stretching. This novel mechanochromic fiber is prepared by depositing polymer microspheres onto a continuous aligned-carbon-nanotube sheet that has been wound on an elastic poly(dimethylsiloxane) fiber, followed by further embedding in poly(dimethylsiloxane). The color of the fiber can be tuned by varying the size and the center-to-center distance of the polymer spheres. It further experiences reversible and rapid multicolor changes during the stretch and release processes, for example, between red, green, and blue. Both the high sensitivity and stability were maintained after 1000 deformation cycles. These elastic photonic-crystal fibers were woven into patterns and smart fabrics for various display and sensing applications.

Abstract:Flexible, stretchable electroluminescent fibers are of significance to meet the escalating requirements of increasing complexity and multifunctionality of smart electronics. We report a stretchable alternating current electroluminescent (ACEL) fiber by a low-cost and all solution-processed scalable process. The ACEL fiber provides high stretchability, decent light-emitting performance, with excellent stability and nearly zero hysteresis. It can be stretched up to 80% strain. Our ACEL fiber device maintained a stable luminance for over 6000 stretch-release cycles at 50% strain. The mechanical stretchability and optical stability of our ACEL fiber device provides new possibilities towards next-generation stretchable displays, electronic textiles, advanced biomedical imaging and lighting, conformable visual readouts in arbitrary shapes, and novel health-monitoring devices.

Abstract:Flexible electro-optical dual-mode sensor fibers with capability of the perceiving and converting mechanical stimuli into digital-visual signals show good prospects in smart human-machine interaction interfaces. However, heavy mass, low stretchability, and lack of non-contact sensing function seriously impede their practical application in wearable electronics. To address these challenges, a stretchable and self-powered mechanoluminescent triboelectric nanogenerator fiber (MLTENGF) based on lightweight carbon nanotube fiber is successfully constructed. Taking advantage of their mechanoluminescent-triboelectric synergistic effect, the well-designed MLTENGF delivers an excellent enhancement electrical signal of 200% and an evident optical signal whether on land or underwater. More encouragingly, the MLTENGF device possesses outstanding stability with almost unchanged sensitivity after stretching for 200%. Furthermore, an extraordinary non-contact sensing capability with a detection distance of up to 35 cm is achieved for the MLTENGF. As application demonstrations, MLTENGFs can be used for home security monitoring, intelligent zither, traffic vehicle collision avoidance, and underwater communication. Thus, this work accelerates the development of wearable electro-optical textile electronics for smart human-machine interaction interfaces.

Abstract:Mechanochromic photonic fibers can realize a visual dynamic color response to external stimuli, and are widely used in colorimetric sensing, smart display, and medical care. At present, colloidal crystals-based mechanochromic photonic fibers with a core-sheath structure have been successfully prepared by electrophoretic deposition and dip-coating. However, problems such as the complicated preparation process and the limited range of color change are still unsolved and hinder the applications of mechanochromic photonic fibers. Here, a mechanochromic photonic fiber with a wide color shift range is prepared by a simple and effective strategy. The fiber is fabricated by coating elastic rubber containing a non-close-packed array of silica particles onto spandex yarn. The obtained photonic fiber displays a structural color that can be controlled by adjusting the diameter and volume fraction of silica particles. Under stretching, the fiber shifts from red to blue with a color change range of 127 nm. More importantly, it achieves reversible color change in the visible range under mechanical strain. These mechanochromic photonic fibers based on colloidal crystals and spandex yarns are promising for smart wearables, display textiles, and visual sensors.

Stretchable and Ambient Stable Perovskite/Polymer Luminous Hybrid Nanofibers of Multicolor Fiber Mats and Their White LED Applications.

Abstract:We report the fabrication and optical/mechanical properties of perovskite/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)-based multicolor luminescent core-shell nanofibers and their large-scale fiber mats. One-step coaxial perovskite/TPU nanofibers had a high photoluminescence quantum yield value exceeding 23.3%, surpassing that of its uniaxial counterpart, due to the homogeneous distribution of perovskite nanoparticles (NPs) by the confinement of the TPU shell. The fabricated core-shell nanofibers exhibited a high mechanical endurance owing to the well elastic properties of TPU and maintained the luminescence intensity even under a 100% stretched state after 1000 stretching-relaxing cycles. By taking advantage of the hydrophobic nature of TPU, the ambient and moisture stability of the fabricated fibers were enhanced up to 1 month. Besides, large-area stretchable nanofibers with a dimension of 15 cm × 30 cm exhibiting various visible-light emission peaks were fabricated by changing the composition of perovskite NPs. Moreover, a large-scale luminescent and stretchable fiber mat was successfully fabricated by electrospinning. Furthermore, the white-light emission from the fabricated fibers and mats was achieved by incorporating orange-light-emitting poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] into the TPU shell and coupling the turquoise blue-light-emitting perovskite NPs in the core site. Finally, the integrity of the perovskite-based TPU fibers was realized by fabricating a light-emitting diode (LED) device containing the orange-light-emitting fibers embedded in the polyfluorene emissive layer. This work demonstrated an effective way to prepare stable and stretchable luminous nanofibers and the integration of such nanofibers into LED devices, which could facilitate the future development of wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Continuous mechanoluminescence (ML) fibers and fiber-woven textiles have the potential to serve as new wearable devices for sensors, healthcare, human—computer interfacing, and Internet of Things. Considering the demands on wearability and adaptability for the ML textiles, it is essential to realize the continuous synthesis of fiber, while maintaining a desired small diameter. Here, we develop a novel adhere-coating method to fabricate ML composite fiber, consisting of a thin polyurethane (PU) core and ZnS:Cu/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) shell, with the outer diameter of 120 μm. By diluting PDMS to tune the thickness of liquid coating layer, droplets formation has been effectively prevented. The composite fiber exhibits a smooth surface structure and superior ML performances, including high brightness, excellent flexibility, and stability. In addition, a weft knitting textile fabricated by the continuous ML fiber can be easily delighted by manually stretching, and the ML fibers can emit visible signals upon human motion stimuli when woven into commercial cloth. Such continuous ultra-fine ML fibers are promising as wearable sensing devices for human motion detection and human—machine interactions.

Abstract:High luminescence intensity from materials that are excited by external stimuli is highly desired. In this work, a stretchable hybrid luminescent composite (HLC) that has multiple luminescence modes is reported. The luminescence can be excited either by externally applied mechanical strain or by a moving object that slides against the HLC. When the HLC is deformed, such as being twisted or folded, the ZnS/Cu phosphor experiences mechanical strain that trigger the mechanoluminescence (ML) of the phosphors. Moreover, as the HLC slides against a contact object, the triboelectrification at the contact interface induces the electroluminescence of phosphor. Here, a series of internal and external factors were studied on how they influence the luminescent intensity. It is found that the luminescent intensity from the two modes can be superposed. The HLC material was used to fabricate a fiber-based luminescent device that can be driven by air flow. The overall luminescent intensity is enhanced by over 72% compared to that obtained solely from the ML. The HLC reported in this work has such potential applications as self-powered light sources and sensors as means of detecting dynamic motions and interaction.

This stretchable device exhibits long‐term stability, reversibility, and high spectral sensitivity to mechanical strain.

Abstract:Flexible luminous fibers have attracted wide attention in the field of functional and smart textiles. In this work, stretchable multicolor fluorescent fibers were successfully prepared by wet-spinning using thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and the boron ketoimine fluorophores (TPA-BKI dyes). Due to the donor (D)-acceptor (A) push-pull electronic system and highly twisted triphenylamine (TPA) skeleton, TPA-BKI dyes exhibited bright emission in both solution and solid states. Meanwhile, the polymer chains further improved the emission efficiency of TPA-BKI dyes in TPU matrix by avoiding close contact between dye molecules, as well as preventing intramolecular rotations in the excited states. Wet-spinning can be used for large-scale and continuous preparation of fluorescent fibers. The TPA-BKI/TPU fibers showed excellent flexibility, high mechanical strength, and bright multicolor fluorescent emission (green, yellow, and red, respectively) when the dye content was as low as 0.1 wt%. Overall, the feasibility of large-scale preparation of fluorescent fibers and their excellent properties, such as flexibility, multicolor fluorescence, and mechanical stability, make them suitable for potential applications, including clothing displays, fashion designs, security, and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Strain sensors that can work sustainably and continuously without any external power supply are highly desirable for future wearable and implantable devices. Herein, a self-powered stretchable strain sensor based on the integration of mechanoluminescent phosphors with an elastomer optical fiber is proposed and developed. This mechanoluminescent optical fiber is capable of emitting light just driven by external strain, without the need of an external light source or electric power. The strain-induced emitted light can be collected and guided along the mechanoluminescent optical fiber. The sensor exhibits linear strain response up to 50% and high-accuracy strain measurement (±1%). Moreover, this optical fiber strain sensor displays consistent signals over 10 000 stretch–release motion cycles, which demonstrates the good durability of the sensor. Due to the excellent light confinement of the elastomer optical fiber, this strain sensor is demonstrated in both bright- and dark-field measurements, wearable gloves, and an implantable sensing device, thereby demonstrating potential as a promising technology for future self-powered optical sensor systems.

Abstract:Mechanically activated luminescence from solids (mechanoluminescence) is a classical optical phenomenon induced in a substance when stressed or cleaved. However, no practical application has been realized due to its low luminescent intensity and lack of reproducibility. We demonstrate highly bright and durable mechanoluminescent flexible composite films with a brightness of ∼120 cd/m2 and durability over ∼100 000 repeated mechanical stresses by using a combination of copper-doped zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu) particles and polydimethylsiloxane. Furthermore, the possibility of mechanoluminescent color-tuning by changing the repetitive stress rate on the composite films is also suggested. These findings can open a window for developing smart systems and opto-mechanical devices.
