Abstract:Layer-structured Zr doped Li[Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1−x/3Zrx/3]O2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05) were synthesized via slurry spray drying method. The powders were characterized by XRD, SEM and galvanostatic charge/discharge tests. The products remained single-phase within the range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.03. The charge and discharge cycling of the cells showed that Zr doping enhanced cycle life compared to the bare one, while did not cause the reduction of the discharge capacity of Li[Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3]O2. The unchanged peak shape in the differential capacity versus voltage curve suggested that the Zr had the effect to stabilize the structure during cycling. More interestingly, the rate capability was greatly improved. The sample with x = 0.01 presented a capacity of 160.2 mAh g−1 at current density of 640 mA g−1(4 C), corresponding to 92.4% of its capacity at 32 mA g−1(0.2 C). The favorable performance of the doped sample could be attributed to its increased lattice parameter.

Abstract:In order to investigate the influences of modification on industrial-grade cathode materials, layered Ti-doped Li(Ni0.5Co0.2Mn0.3)(1-x)TixO2 cathode materials have been synthesized via a simple solid state method using industrial raw materials in bulk scale ( > 10 kg) in this work. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) mapping, particle size distribution and electrochemical tests including cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) have been used to characterize electrochemical performance of industrial-grade cathode materials. The results of XRD, SEM and EDS mapping characterization indicate that all the modified cathode materials with their Ni, Co and Mn components doped by titanium keep a typical alpha-NaFeO2 layered structure with R-3m space group and titanium atoms are uniformly distributed in all series of Ti-doped materials as prepared. Electrochemical characterization confirms that the material of 0.2% Ti doping has the best cycling performance and the least capacity loss because of its best cation ordering figured by Rietveld refinement of XRD. The initial discharge capacity of 0.2% Ti doping material achieves 185.0 mA h/g at 1 C between 2.8 and 4.6 V. Abstract:Fine powders of Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6−xMoxO2 (x=0, 0.002, 0.005, 0.01, 0.05) are prepared by a thermopolymerization method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements are carried out to characterize these samples. The maximum Mo-doping level to obtain a pure layered phase is 0.005. The Mo-doped samples show a great improvement in rate performance and cycling stability. For the optimal composition Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.59Mo0.01O2, it exhibits a discharge capacity of 245 and 110mAhg−1 at 0.1C and 5C, respectively. It retains a capacity of 229mAhg−1 at 0.1C after 204 cycles with a capacity retention of 93.2%. This study suggests that the partial substitution of Mn4+ with Mo6+ can improve both the rate capability and cycle performance of this high-capacity cathode material.

Abstract:A novel oriented-rod structure Ni, Mn co-doped vanadium oxide ternary material synthesized via a facile coprecipitation method is constructed and used as cathode active material for lithium-ion capacitive-batteries. It indicates that vanadium oxide ternary materials with Ni, Mn co-doping ratio to 8:0.5:0.5 possess a high crystallinity and rod-shaped morphological characteristics along with a certain orientation at (110) crystal plane. This oriented-rod structure is more beneficial to the lithium-ion transmission, so as to improve the electrochemical performances as ideal cathode active materials for lithium-ion capacitive-batteries. Consequently, this oriented-rod structure Ni, Mn co-doped vanadium oxide ternary material has very excellent electrochemical reversibility, low charge transfer resistance (106 Ω), and large lithium-ion diffusion efficiency (3.16 × 10 −13 cm 2 ·s −1 ). And the initial discharge specific capacity can achieve to 124 mAh·g −1 and maintain 55.6% capacity retention rate after 1000 cycles at 100 mA·g −1 current density. Abstract:Lithium-manganese-based cathode materials have attracted much attention due to its high specific capacity, but the low initial coulomb efficiency, poor rate performance and voltage attenuation during cycling limit its application. In this work, Li1.2Ni0.16Co0.08Mn0.56-x V x O2 samples (x = 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, 0.05) were prepared using the sol-gel method, and the effects of different V5+ contents on the structure, valence state, and electrochemical performance of electrode materials were investigated. The results show that the introduction of high-valence V5+ in cathode materials can reduce partial Mn4+ to active Mn3+ ions for charge conservation, which not only improves the discharge capacity and coulomb efficiency of Li-rich manganese-based cathode materials, but also inhibits the voltage attenuation. The initial discharge capacity of the Li1.2Ni0.16Co0.08Mn0.55V0.01O2 is as high as 280.9 mA h g-1 with coulomb efficiency of 77.7% at 0.05C, which is much higher than that of the undoped pristine sample (236.6 mA h g-1 with coulomb efficiency of 74.0%). After 100 cycles at 0.1C, the capacity retention rate of Li1.2Ni0.16Co0.08Mn0.55V0.01O2 was 92.3% with the median voltage retention rate of 95.6%. This work provides a new idea for high performance of lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials.

Abstract:According to the tetrahedral phase diagram of LiNiO₂–LiCoO₂–LiMnO₂–Li₂MnO₃, a series of Li₁.₂(Ni₀.₂Mn₀.₆)ₓ(Co₀.₄Mn₀.₄)y(Ni₀.₄Mn₀.₄)₁₋ₓ₋yO₂ (0 ≤ x + y ≤ 1) have been designed to explore new Li-rich solid solution cathode materials. The effects of Li₁.₂Ni₀.₂Mn₀.₆O₂, Li₁.₂Co₀.₄Mn₀.₄O₂ and Li₁.₂Ni₀.₄Mn₀.₄O₂ content in solid solutions on structure and electrochemical properties are investigated. Micro-sized spherical or ellipsoidal precursors are first prepared via a carbonate co-precipitation route. After calcination with lithium sources, all samples are indexed to a typical layered structure with an R3m space group as detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD). It is found that the introduction of Co can improve the tap density. However, these Co referred samples reveal lower discharge specific capacities and inferior cycle life. For these Co-free materials with high Ni content, for instance Li₁.₂Ni₀.₃Mn₀.₅O₂, although low capacity is observed in the initial cycle, a large capacity of above 250 mA h g⁻¹ is achieved after about 10 cycles. Importantly, the activated Li₁.₂Ni₀.₃Mn₀.₅O₂ material still delivers a high capacity of over 230 mA h g⁻¹ after 70 cycles, displaying superior cycle stability. These results may be instructive in designing and exploring high performance cathode materials for advanced LIBs.
Nanostructured Mn-Doped V2O5 Cathode Material Fabricated from Layered Vanadium Jarosite

Abstract:We propose a nanostructured Mn-doped V2O5 lithium-ion battery cathode material that facilitates cathodic charge transport. The synthesis strategy uses a layered compound, vanadium(III) jarosite, as the precursor, in which the Mn2+ ions are doped uniformly between the vanadium oxide crystal layers. Through a two-step transformation, the vanadium jarosite was converted into Mn2+-doped V2O5. The resulting aliovalent doping of the larger Mn cations in the modified V2O5 structure increases the cell volume, which facilitates diffusion of Li+ ions, and introduces oxygen vacancies that improve the electronic conductivity. Comparison of the electrochemical performance in Li-ion batteries of undoped and the Mn2+-doped V2O5 hierarchical structure made from layered vanadium jarosite confirms that the Mn-doping improves ion transport to give a high cathodic columbic capacity (253 mAhg(-1) at 1C, 86% of the theoretical value, 294 mAhg(-1)) and excellent cycling stability.

Abstract:P2‐type layered manganese‐based oxides have attracted considerable interest as economical, cathode materials with high energy density for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). Despite their potential, these materials still face challenges related to sluggish kinetics and structural instability. In this study, a composite cathode material, Na0.67Ni0.23Mn0.67V0.1O2@Na3V2O2(PO4)2F was developed by surface‐coating P2‐type Na0.67Ni0.23Mn0.67V0.1O2 with a thin layer of Na3V2O2(PO4)2F to enhance both the electrochemical sodium storage and material air stability. The optimized Na0.67Ni0.23Mn0.67V0.1O2@5wt%Na3V2O2(PO4)2F exhibited a high discharge capacity of 176 mA h g‐1 within the 1.5‐4.1 V range at a low current density of 17 mA g‐1. At an increased current density of 850 mA g‐1 within the same voltage window, it still delivered a substantial initial discharge capacity of 112 mAh g‐1. These findings validate the significant enhancement of ion diffusion capabilities and rate performance in the P2‐type Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 material conferred by the composite cathode.

High-Performance Lithium-Rich Layered Oxide Material: Effects of Preparation Methods on Microstructure and Electrochemical Properties

Abstract:Lithium-rich layered oxide is one of the most promising candidates for the next-generation cathode materials of high-energy-density lithium ion batteries because of its high discharge capacity. However, it has the disadvantages of uneven composition, voltage decay, and poor rate capacity, which are closely related to the preparation method. Here, 0.5Li2MnO3·0.5LiMn0.8Ni0.1Co0.1O2 was successfully prepared by sol–gel and oxalate co-precipitation methods. A systematic analysis of the materials shows that the 0.5Li2MnO3·0.5LiMn0.8Ni0.1Co0.1O2 prepared by the oxalic acid co-precipitation method had the most stable layered structure and the best electrochemical performance. The initial discharge specific capacity was 261.6 mAh·g−1 at 0.05 C, and the discharge specific capacity was 138 mAh·g−1 at 5 C. The voltage decay was only 210 mV, and the capacity retention was 94.2% after 100 cycles at 1 C. The suppression of voltage decay can be attributed to the high nickel content and uniform element distribution. In addition, tightly packed porous spheres help to reduce lithium ion diffusion energy and improve the stability of the layered structure, thereby improving cycle stability and rate capacity. This conclusion provides a reference for designing high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Lithium rich manganese-based layered material is a promising high-capacity cathode candidate for lithium ion batteries, but it usually exhibits poor cycling stability and low safety because of the issues of oxygen ions unstability under high voltage. A strategy to promote the electrode performance of lithium rich manganese-based layered material through incorporation of boracic polyanion has been developed. As-synthesized Li[Li0.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54](BO4)0.015(BO3)0.005O1.925 showed superior reversible capacity of 300 mAh/g after 80 cycles, excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 89% within 300 cycles, higher thermal stability and enhanced redox couple potentials in comparison with pristine Li[Li0.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54]O2 when used as an cathode material for lithium ion batteries, which can be attributed to the tuned electronic structure after the incorporation. This facile enhanced strategy is expected to be extended to other high capacity electrode systems.

Abstract:Lithium-rich manganese-based layer-structured oxides (xLi(2)MnO(3)center dot(1-x)LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2) have attracted great attention for their potential applications as cathode materials of high energy-density lithium ion batteries. However, these oxides suffer from inferior cycling and poor rate capability due to presence of the Li2MnO3 phase. Herein, the Li+ ions in the Li-layer of the Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 (or 0.5Li(2)MnO(3)center dot 0.5LiNi(1/3)Co(1/3)Mn(1/3)O(2)) are partially substituted with aliovalent Ti4+ ions to improve its long-term cycling stability and rate performance. The obtained oxide (Li1.2-xTixMn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2, x = 2.5%) exhibits an initial capacity of 320 mAh g(-1) and a capacity retention of 71% after 300 cycles as well as good rate performance. In addition, although Ti doping cannot prevent the transformation from the layered to the spinel-like phase, it stabilizes the structure of the spinel-like phase below 3.0 V. Based on first-principles calculations and performance evaluation, these improvements are attributed to the Ti doping induced enhancement in conductivity, diffusion, activation energy of Mn migration and Ti-O bonding. Abstract:The vanadium oxide V2O5•4VO2 cathode material has aroused significant interest due to its high theoretical capacity and wide availability. However, the poor rate and cycle performance of the V2O5•4VO2 electrode severely hindered its further application in high-energy density lithium-ion batteries. Herein, a kind of Al/Mn co-doped V2O5•4VO2 prepared via facile solvothermal method combined with annealing process was reported. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that [AlO6] and [MnO6] not only serve as an octahedral pillar to extend the interlayer spacing, but introduce oxygen vacancies that provide more lithium ion active sites and higher ionic and electronic conductivity in lithium ion (de)intercalation process. Paired with lithium metal anode, Al/Mn co-doped V2O5•4VO2 cathode exhibits better performance metrics of 322.5 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g, 91.7% capacity retention after 50 cycles, and 195.8 mAh/g after 200 cycles at a current density of 1 A/g, while the values corresponding to the pure phase V2O5•4VO2 are 248.7 mAh/g, 66.9% as well as 97.7 mAh/g respectively. Actually, the insight into the performance of potential electrode materials improved by double ion doping was provided in the present work.

Abstract:Solid solution material of 0.5Li2MnO3·0.5LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2 (alternatively Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2) was synthesized by a fast co-precipitation method which takes sulfates with high solubility as the transition metal sources of mixed hydroxide precursor. The optimal synthetic conditions were determined through the design of orthogonal experiments. The properties of samples synthesized under the best conditions were investigated in detail. The XRD pattern of 0.5Li2MnO3·0.5LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2 revealed a well ordered hexagonal layered structure with the evident feature of super lattice caused by Li2MnO3. FESEM images showed that the powders possess small and unagglomerated particles with size range of 100–300nm. XPS analysis results demonstrated that the valence states of Ni, Co, Mn are +2, +3, and +3.52 respectively. The electrochemical measurements showed that the optimal material delivers initial discharge capacity of 315.3mAhg−1 at 1/20C between 2.0 and 4.8V with good cycle stability after firstly several cycles. CV test proved that the high capacity performance is ascribed to the redox of oxygen or its species at the electrode surface. Rate test showed that 179.5mAhg−1 was obtained at 2C which is considerably high, as far as we concerned.

Abstract:MnxV2O5·nH2O containing double sheets of V2O5 layers has been synthesized by a new method – oxidation of VOSO4 with layered MnO2. The Mn/V molar ratio is 0.068, and XPS indicates that the oxidation state of vanadium is +5 and that of manganese is +4. MnxV2O5·nH2O has relatively promising lithium insertion properties, with a specific capacity of 200 mAhg−1 between 2.0 and 4.0 V, with the discharge capacity at the 18th cycle remaining as high as 208.3 mAhg−1. MnxV2O5·nH2O is therefore a potential practical candidate as the cathode material for rechargeable lithium batteries.

Abstract:Active cathode materials with ultra-high specific capacities, including nickel-rich substrates, are promising candidates for future high-energy density batteries. However, the poor stability of nickel-rich cathodes has limited the development of long-life batteries. Herein, the electrochemical properties of layered cathode materials were optimized by tuning the transition metal ratio (Co/Mn) in precursor preparation. The effects of transition metals Co and Mn on the specific capacities and cyclabilities of layered cathode materials were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Keeping Co and Mn equal allows extreme nickel cathode materials to have the best performance. The as-obtained LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 cathode exhibited a high capacity of 221.0 mAh g−1, combined with excellent interfacial structure and thermal stability. The enhanced nickel ions mechanism of the active cathode materials by transition metal regulation was clarified. Overall, the proposed materials containing transition metals with improved capacity and cycling stability are promising for the development of future advanced batteries.

Abstract:The layered Ni-rich NiCoMn (NCM)-based cathode active material Li[NixCo(1−x)/2Mn(1−x)/2]O2 (x ≥ 0.6) has the advantages of high energy density and price competitiveness over an LiCoO2-based material. Additionally, NCM is beneficial in terms of its increasing reversible discharge capacity with the increase in Ni content; however, stable electrochemical performance has not been readily achieved because of the cation mixing that occurs during its synthesis. In this study, various layer-structured Li1.0[Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1]O2 materials were synthesized, and their electrochemical performances were investigated. A NiCoMnCO3 precursor, prepared using carbonate co-precipitation with Li2CO3 as the lithium source and having a sintering temperature of 850 °C, sintering time of 25 h, and metal to Li molar ratio of 1.00–1.05 were found to be the optimal parameters/conditions for the preparation of Li1.0[Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1]O2. The material exhibited a discharge capacity of 160 mAhg−1 and capacity recovery rate of 95.56% (from a 5.0–0.1 C-rate).

Abstract:We propose a feasibility of Co-free Ni-rich Li(Ni(1-x)Mn(x))O2 layer compound. Li(Ni(1-x)Mn(x))O2 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) have been synthesized by a coprecipitation method. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction and microscopic studies reveal dense and spherical secondary particles of highly crystalline phase with low cation mixing over the whole compositions, implying successful optimization of synthetic conditions. Electrochemical test results indicated that the Co-free materials delivered high capacity with excellent capacity retention and reasonable rate capability. In particular, Li(Ni0.9Mn0.1)O2, which possesses the lowest cation mixing in the Li layers among samples, exhibited exceptionally high rate capacity (approximately 149 mAh g(-1) at 10 C rate) at 25 °C and high discharge capacity upon cycling under a severe condition, in the voltage range of 2.7-4.5 V at 55 °C. The cation mixing in Li(Ni0.9Mn0.1)O2 increased slightly even after the extensive cycling at the elevated temperature, which is ascribed to the structural integrity induced from the optimized synthetic condition using the coprecipitation.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, as the most advanced energy storage devices currently available, urgently require the development of cathode materials with high capacity, large specific energy, and fast charge/discharge performance to satisfy the continuous technological innovation. Here, a Li-rich Mn-based ternary cathode material Li7/6Nil/6Co1/6Mn1/2O2 is designed, and the geometrical structure, electronic properties, and thermodynamic properties of this material are investigated employing first-principles method. Six layered structure models are established by adjusting the ratio of Ni, Co, and Mn elements, and the effects of various elements on material properties are evaluated. Based on the performance of Ni, Co, and Mn in the structure, Li1.2Ni0.15Co0.1Mn0.55O2 features favorbale electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and excellent stability. This material obtained through co-precipitation high temperature solid phase synthesis presents high actual capacity (245 mA·h/g) and superior cycling performance (capacity retention rate of the material is 84% after 60 cycles at 0.2 C). This effort discusses the Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials in terms of structural basis, reaction mechanism, and application exploration, which are valuable for guiding their theoretical design, optimization modification, and industrial application.

Abstract:An amorphous complex precursor with uniform Mn/Ni cation distribution is attempted for preparing a nano-structured layered Li-rich oxide (Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2)cathode material, using diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) as a chelating agent. The materials are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical tests. The crystal structure of Li-rich materials is found to be closely related to synthesis temperature. As-obtained nano materials sintered at 850 °C for 10 h show an average size of 200 nm with a single crystal phase and good crystallinity. At a current density of 20 mA·g−1, the specific discharge capacity reaches 221 mAh·g−1 for the first cycle and the capacity retention is 81% over 50 cycles. Even at a current density of 1000 mA·g−1, the capacity is as high as 118 mAh·g−1. The enhanced rate capability can be ascribed to the nano-sized morphology and good crystal structure.
