Abstract:Novel oxynitride glass–ceramics with tremendously improved quantum yield and adjustable color coordinates were prepared with the conventional melt-and-quench method and subsequent annealing heat treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed CaAl2Si2O8 and Y20N4Si12O48 crystalline phases were homogenously precipitated in the glass matrix. The optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum measurements showed that a large portion of Eu3+ ions were reduced into Eu2+ which were crystallized into CaAl2Si2O8 phase during the heat treatment by substituting Ca2+ ions in them. Emission spectra evidently show that Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions were preferentially incorporated in CaAl2Si2O8 and Y20N4Si12O48 crystalline phases, respectively. This assignment was further supported by cation ionic radii and local charge balances, as well as defect chemistry considerations. The total emission intensity including both Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions was enhanced with increasing the annealing temperature, due to the conversion of Eu3+ to Eu2+ and the enhanced quantum efficiency of Eu3+ in the crystalline phase as compared to the glass matrix. As a result, the quantum yields (QYs) of the glass–ceramics were also enhanced significantly from 2.07% (the precursor glass) up to 43.33% (the maximum of the glass–ceramics). The emission ratio of Eu2+/Eu3+ changed from <1.0 to >4.0, which led this novel glass–ceramics with adjustable color coordinates ranging from red to blue controlled by varying the annealing temperature.

Abstract:The luminescence properties of europium and dysprosium ions co-doped zinc–aluminoborosilicate glasses were analyzed. A combination of blue, green, yellow and red emission bands was shown for these glasses, and white light emission could be observed under UV light excitation. The color of luminescence could be adjusted by varying the proportions of europium and dysprosium. The concentration quenching effect was also investigated in this paper. Furthermore, the reduction of Eu3+→Eu2+ in air at high temperature was observed in the zinc–aluminoborosilicate glasses.

Abstract:Tm3+ doped zinc silicate glass-ceramics composed of SiO2-Al2O3-ZnO-K2O-Tm2O3 embedded with ZnO nanocrystals were successfully fabricated by melt-quenching method with subsequent heat treatment. Tm3+ ions and ZnO nanocrystals were introduced as blue and yellow luminescence centers, respectively. The effects of heat treatment, excitation wavelength and Tm3+ doping concentration on the photoluminescence behaviors of these glass-ceramics were studied. Short-time (5 minutes) heat treatment was considered as the optimal heat treatment time, which facilitates simultaneously emitting narrow blue peak located at 453 nm and a broad yellow band centered at 580 nm. Blue and yellow emissions could be attributed to the D-1(2) -> F-3(4) transition of Tm3+ and Zn-i/O-i-related defect emission of ZnO nanocrystals, respectively. The combination of these two emissions allows the realization of white light emitting in the glass-ceramic samples. Furthermore, tunable luminescent color and chromaticity coordinates, including yellow, white and blue, can be realized by varying the pumping wavelengths as well as the content of Tm3+ dopant in the glass matrix. Nearly perfect white light emission with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinate (x = 0.33, y = 0.32) was achieved for the 0.05 mol% Tm3+ doped glass-ceramic embedding ZnO nanocrystals by heat treatment at 750 degrees C for 5 minutes under the excitation of 360 nm. These luminescent glass-ceramics doped with Tm3+ ion and ZnO nanocrystals could be a promising candidate for white light emitting devices under near-ultraviolet excitation.

Abstract:Er3+-Yb3+ codoped oxy-fluoro-tungstosilicate glasses with infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion luminescence were prepared by melting quenching in air. The effects of Er3+ doping on the optical properties of the samples were measured by means of techniques such as optical absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. The results showed that intense green and red signals centered at 546 and 665 nm, corresponding to the 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ by a multiphoton stepwise phonon-assisted excited-state absorption process, respectively, were simultaneously observed by exciting the samples with a diode laser operating at 980 nm at room temperature. The upconversion process was found very sensitive to Er3+ content at a constant Yb2O3 content of 5 mol.%. With the increase of Er3+ content from 0.5% to 1.5%, the upconversion intensity increased gradually. Further increasing of Er3+ content to 3.0% resulted in a significant fluorescence quenching. Moreover, the possible upconversion mechanisms were discussed based on the energy-matching conditions and the quadratic dependence on excitation power.

Abstract:A novel pair of transition metal ions Cu+, Mn2+ is co-doped in borosilicate glasses. Both copper and manganese ions exist in lower valence states (Cu+, Mn2+) in the as-prepared glasses. Around 5-time enhanced Mn2+ emission under the UV excitation is observed, which, as demonstrated by excitation spectra and emission decay curves, is due to an energy transfer from Cu+ ions resulting in greatly increased absorption of Mn2+ ions in the UV region, and relaxation on doubly-forbidden transition of Mn2+ leading to the much shortened Mn2+ emission lifetime from millisecond to microsecond level. Besides, a composite white emission is generated by combining the blue-green part from Cu+ ions with the green-red part from Mn2+ ions and it can be effectively tuned from cold to warm by adjusting host glass composition and altering excitation wavelength. Abstract:Yb(3+)-doped glass and glass ceramic containing ZnO nanocrystals were prepared by the melting-quenching method and subsequent heat treatment. Intense near-IR emission around 1000 nm that originated from the transition of Yb(3+):(2)F(5/2)→(2)F(7/2) was generated as a result of energy transfer from oxygen interstitials in ZnO nanocrystals to Yb(3+) with energy transfer efficiency of about 10%. The quantum yield for the near-IR emission of Yb(3+) under the excitation of 390 nm was about 16.7%. These materials have potential application in achieving high-efficiency Si solar cells via spectrum modification.

Abstract:Here for the first time, we report an unusual annealing temperature dependent near-infrared (NIR) luminescence quenching and reviving behavior in Bi-doped MgO-Al2O3-GeO2 glasses. Systematic characterizations of the samples by using differential thermal analysis (DTA), photoluminescence and absorption spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate that this phenomenon is associated with the reversible reaction of Bi+ and Bi-0 initiated by the change of local glass structure. Excitingly, wavelength tunable luminescence is also observed and it can be ascribed to selective excitation of active Bi+ center in different sites. These results not only open a new way for controlling luminescence properties of main group elements in glass but also provide great value for improving practical active-fiber drawing process. Abstract:We demonstrated the conversion of near-ultraviolet radiation of 250-350 nm into visible emission of 450-600 nm and near-infrared emission of 970-1100 nm in the Yb2O3 doped transparent 40SrO-20TiO(2)-40SiO(2) glasses. The observed broad visible emission band centered at 510 nm is associated with silicon-oxygen-related defects in the glassy matrix, and the near-infrared emission originated from the Yb3+ F-2(5/2)-> F-2(7/2) transition is due to the energy transfer from silicon-oxygen-related defects to Yb3+. The energy transfer process was studied by both the steady state spectra and the time-resolved spectra of Yb3+ at 15 K. The temperature dependent energy transfer rate was calculated. The Yb2O3 concentration dependent energy transfer efficiency has also been evaluated, and the maximum value is 56% for 12 mol % Yb2O3 doped glass.

Abstract:A family of highly thermal chromatic stable Dy 3+ -Eu 3+ doped B 2 O 3 -Bi 2 O 3 -ZnO-Li 2 O (BBZL) glass samples was synthesised using the high-temperature melt quenching technique. The optical and thermal stability properties of the samples were analysed using their fluorescence spectra at various temperatures, fluorescence lifetime decay times and colour coordinates. The Dy 3+ -doped BBZL (BBZL: Dy) glass samples generated cold white light when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, while the Dy 3+ -Eu 3+ -doped BBZL (BBZL: DyEu) glass samples emitted neutral and warm white light, which can be attributed to the introduction of Eu 3+ that substantially enhanced the colour rendering of samples. An overlap of the excitation-emission spectra of Eu 3+ and Dy 3+ indicated an energy transfer between Dy 3+ and Eu 3+ . Under a 350 nm excitation, the fluorescence lifetime of BBZL: DyEu decreased from 0.5348 to 0.3642 ms. Using the Dexter theory, the energy transfer between Dy 3+ and Eu 3+ was demonstrated to be an electric dipole-electric dipole leap. The chromaticity shifts of BBZL: DyEu were 8.60 × 10 −4 and 9.40 × 10 −4 at 448 and 498 K, respectively, reflecting the high thermal stability of the sample chromaticity. The study demonstrated that Dy 3+ -Eu 3+ doped borate glasses can be used as tunable luminescent materials in high-power white light-emitting diodes to mitigate the chromaticity shift in fluorescent materials at high temperatures.

Abstract:The effects of temperature, pump power and excitation wavelength on near-infrared photoluminescence from Bi-doped multi-component germanate glasses are presented. Compared to conventional silica/silicate matrices, the examined material exhibits superior resistance to thermal quenching and less pronounced excited state absorption for pumping at 808 nm. It is shown that by selecting the optimal excitation wavelength, photoemission can be initiated from multiple active centers in parallel, resulting in an emission bandwidth (full width at half maximum) of more than 370 nm. Er3+/Bi co-doping is presented as an effective means to significantly enhance emission intensity around 1.5 mu m by suppressing the typical Er3+-related red-to-green upconversion. Besides its relevance for Bi-doped materials, this also indicates a new route towards improving the performance of Er-based optical devices. The mechanism of Er3+-> Bi energy transfer is examined in detail. Adjusting the molar ratio between both species provides an effective tool for tuning the emission scheme and further increasing emission bandwidth. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Tb3+/Eu2+,3+-doped zinc aluminoborosilicate glasses were prepared using a conventional high temperature melt-quenching method. Infrared spectra and physical properties of as-prepared glasses verified that the addition of Tb/Eu causes structural weakness in the glass. Tuning of blue, green, and red emission bands achieves white light for the zinc aluminoborosilicate glasses. The broad blue emission band is attributed to the 5d-4f transition of Eu2+ due to partial reduction of Eu3+ during calcination in ambient atmosphere. The reduction of Eu3+ is related to the formation of Eu Zn • and V Zn '' defects and host alkalinity decreases with the addition of Eu3+. Emission spectra and decay curves confirm energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ in the zinc aluminoborosilicate glasses, and relative intensities of green and red luminescence can be tuned through concentrations changes of Tb3+ and Eu2+,3+. When the concentrations of Tb3+ and Eu2+,3+ are equal to 6% and 1.2%, respectively, a neutral white light emitting glass is obtained. Furthermore, the white-emitting glass shows very high thermal stability compared to a commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor. Therefore, luminescence tuning of glasses through changing activator concentrations and energy transfer is expected to achieve high-powered white LEDs.

Abstract:The development of advanced luminescent materials is highly desirable for developing the energy-efficient lighting technology. However, it is still challenging to achieve stable full-color tuning in the same matrix upon a single-beam light excitation so as to ensure the high color stability and consistency. Herein, Eu3+/Eu2+/Tb3+ co-doped sintered nanoporous glass via the dipping strategy is fabricated, which can emit blue, green and red emissions simultaneously by simply modifying the thermal treatment temperature. This full-color tuning is attributed to the dual roles of the thermal reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+ in Al2O3-SiO2 glass and simultaneous emissions of Eu3+/Eu2+/Tb3+ activators. The densification of nanoporous glass via sintering could effectively decrease the amount of hydroxyl groups that present in the glass matrix, resulting in 5 times enhancement of the photoluminescence intensity and longer photoluminescence lifetime of rare earth (RE) ions. The thermal reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+ is due to the reduction environment provided by Al3+ ions in the Al2O3-SiO2 glass. The energy transfer (ET) from Eu2+ to Tb3+, Eu2+ to Eu3+ and Tb3+ to Eu3+ have been investigated in detail. Based on the ET mechanism, rational PL spectra design was demonstrated by varying the concentration of Eu3+ ions in solution. The Color Correlated Temperature (CCT) and the Color Rendered Index (CRI) values of the white light emission glass are 7420 K (Cold-white emission) and 80.85, the temperature dependent photoluminescence (TDPL) analysis reflects the white light emission glass possesses high thermal stability and excellent thermal restorability. This facile fabrication and full-color tuning of Eu3+/Eu2+/Tb3+ co-doped sintered nanoporous Al2O3-SiO2 glass may provide a novel luminescent material for white-light emitting diodes (WLEDs) application.

Abstract:Through the traditional molten method, we designed and fabricated Nd3+/Yb3+ co-doped bismuth borate glasses, and completed the study of the luminescence mechanism of rare earth ions in 1 μm band as well as the doping concentration on the luminescence performance of the glass. Firstly, the thermodynamic properties of the glass sample was evaluated by utilizing DSC curve. Subsequently, the spectral properties of BBFNY-2 glass sample was revealed by analyzing the absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, fluorescence lifetimes and Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory. Finally, the energy transfer mechanism between rare earth ions Nd3+→Yb3+ was analyzed in detail. The increase of fluorescence intensity at 1008 nm in the glass was calculated corresponding to the broadening of Δλeff from 103 nm to 107 nm, and the obtainable OCT (optical coherence tomography) axial resolution increased from 4.4 μm to 4.1 μm. In this work, the small absorption cross section of Yb3+ at 980 nm in 55Bi2O3–35B2O3–10BaF2 (mol%) glass is effectively solved by Nd3+→Yb3+ energy transfer. Meanwhile, the relevant parameters of the prepared BBFNY-2 glass sample were calculated, and the results suggested that the fabricated glass samples have large microscopic parameters, high transfer efficiency and long fluorescence lifetime. In the results, it was revealed that the via non-radiative electric dipole-dipole process was responsible for the energy transfer and was proportional to the concentration of the Nd3+ donor ions. With all the results, the prepared BBFNY-2 glass sample is a high-potential candidate material for ∼1 μm laser applications.

Abstract:Rare earth (Tm, Dy, Tb, Eu) ion mono- and co-doped borosilicate glasses were prepared in ambient atmosphere by melt quenching method. The characteristics of photoluminescence and excitation spectra of the obtained glasses were investigated. The results show that red and blue emission bands corresponding to Eu3+ and Eu2+ co-exist in the Eu ion mono-doped borosilicate glasses,indicating the conversion of Eu3+ to Eu2+ occurs in the glasses. The conversion efficiency is depending on the content of B2O3 and the type of network modifier. In addition, a red shift of the Eu2+ emission peak was observed with increasing ionic radius of alkaline earth cations. Blue, yellow/green and red emission bands were observed in the emission spectra of Eu/Dy and Tm/Tb/Eu co-doped borosilicate glasses. The combination of these emission bands allows the realization of white light when the glass is excited by ultraviolet light. Moreover, the relative emission intensity ratios of these emission peaks could be adjusted by changing the composition of glasses. This indicates that the obtained rare earth ions co-doped borosilicate glasses are potential fluorescent materials for developing white-light emitting diode devices.

Abstract:In this work, the luminescent properties of Sb3+/Mn2+ codoped 60P(2)O(5)-40MgO glass are presented. White light photoluminescence combining blue and orange-red light was observed under ultraviolet light excitation. The emission spectra showed that the blue emission intensity of Sb3+ decreased significantly whereas the red emission intensity of Mn2+ increased with the increasing concentration of Mn2+ ions. Meanwhile, by maintaining the concentration of MnO (2.0mol%) and increasing concentration of Sb2O3, both the blue emission and red emission were enhanced remarkably. The energy transfer from Sb3+ to Mn2+ ions via the dipole-quadrupole interaction was confirmed.

The near infrared luminescence properties of glass samples are investigated by the absorption and photoluminescence spectra. The enhanced emissions at 1230 and 1470 nm have been observed from Bi/Tm3+ co-doped samples when pumped by an 808 laser diode. The possible energy transfer mechanisms from Bi to Tm3+ ions are proposed.
Tunable Emission and Energy Transfer in Single-Phased Ba9Lu2Si6O24:Bi3+,Eu3+ for UV W-LEDs

Abstract:A novel single-phased tunable emitting phosphor Ba9Lu2Si6O24:Bi3+, Eu3+ (BLSO: Bi3+, Eu3+) was successfully prepared via a simple solid-state approach. The main excitation peaks range from 320 to 400 nm of BLSO: Bi3+ were identified by photoluminescence characterization, indicating BLSO:Bi3+ viable for ultraviolet (UV) excitation. Emission spectra show that Bi3+ occupies at least two nonequivalent sites in BLSO host, and display broad emission peaks at 410 and 490 nm when excited by UV light, respectively. As red emitting center Eu3+ was introduced into BLSO: Bi3+, significant energy transfer (ET) occurs from Bi3+ to Eu3+ through a dipoledipole mechanism. The ET efficiency reaches 97.57%. By varying the doped ratio of Bi3+ and Eu3+, tunable light and white emission can be easily realized. Results indicate that BLSO:Bi3+, Eu3+ is a potential tunable emission phosphor in UV excited W-LEDs.
