Abstract:Tb3+/Eu2+,3+-doped zinc aluminoborosilicate glasses were prepared using a conventional high temperature melt-quenching method. Infrared spectra and physical properties of as-prepared glasses verified that the addition of Tb/Eu causes structural weakness in the glass. Tuning of blue, green, and red emission bands achieves white light for the zinc aluminoborosilicate glasses. The broad blue emission band is attributed to the 5d-4f transition of Eu2+ due to partial reduction of Eu3+ during calcination in ambient atmosphere. The reduction of Eu3+ is related to the formation of Eu Zn • and V Zn '' defects and host alkalinity decreases with the addition of Eu3+. Emission spectra and decay curves confirm energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ in the zinc aluminoborosilicate glasses, and relative intensities of green and red luminescence can be tuned through concentrations changes of Tb3+ and Eu2+,3+. When the concentrations of Tb3+ and Eu2+,3+ are equal to 6% and 1.2%, respectively, a neutral white light emitting glass is obtained. Furthermore, the white-emitting glass shows very high thermal stability compared to a commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor. Therefore, luminescence tuning of glasses through changing activator concentrations and energy transfer is expected to achieve high-powered white LEDs.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to adjust the luminescence properties in zinc - aluminum - borosilicate glass by co - doping terbium (Tb) and europium (Eu) in order to achieve high - efficiency white - light emission suitable for white LED applications. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following points: 1. **Luminescence Modulation**: By changing the concentration ratio of Tb and Eu, adjust the proportion of blue, green and red luminescence bands, thereby achieving white - light emission. 2. **Structure - Performance Relationship**: Study the influence of Tb and Eu doping on the glass structure, especially the increase in the number of non - bridging oxygens (NBOs), which leads to the weakening of the glass network. 3. **Energy Transfer Mechanism**: Explore the energy transfer process from Tb to Eu and how this energy transfer affects the luminescence properties. 4. **Thermal Stability**: Evaluate the luminescence stability and thermal stability of the doped glass at high temperatures and compare it with commercial YAG:Ce phosphors. ### Main Research Contents 1. **Sample Preparation**: - Zinc - aluminum - borosilicate glasses with different Tb and Eu concentrations were prepared by the high - temperature melt - quenching method. - The structure and optical properties of the glasses were characterized by means of infrared spectroscopy, absorption and transmission spectroscopy, photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. 2. **Structural Analysis**: - Infrared spectroscopy shows that with the addition of Tb and Eu, the number of non - bridging oxygens (NBOs) in the glass increases, leading to the weakening of the glass network. - The measurement results of density and molar volume further confirm this. The changes in density and molar volume indicate that the glass network becomes looser. 3. **Optical Properties**: - Through absorption and transmission spectra, the characteristic absorption peaks of Tb and Eu were observed. - Photoluminescence spectra show that Tb provides strong green luminescence, and Eu provides red and blue luminescence. By adjusting the concentrations of Tb and Eu, white - light emission can be achieved. - The calculations of energy transfer efficiency and probability rate show that the energy transfer from Tb to Eu is significant and increases with the increase of Eu concentration. 4. **Thermal Stability**: - Temperature - dependent photoluminescence spectra show that the doped glass can still maintain a relatively high luminescence intensity at high temperatures, showing excellent thermal stability. - Compared with commercial YAG:Ce phosphors, the doped glass has better luminescence stability at high temperatures. ### Conclusion By co - doping Tb and Eu, high - efficiency white - light emission can be achieved in zinc - aluminum - borosilicate glass, and this glass has excellent thermal stability. These characteristics make this glass potentially applicable in high - power white - LED applications.
