Abstract:Through meticulous design, a Li-lacking Cr 2 O 5 cathode is physically mixed with Li-rich Li 1.2 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 Mn 0.54 O 2 (LNCM) cathode to form composite cathodes LNCM@ x Cr 2 O 5 ( x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.35, 0.4, mass ratio) in order to make use of the excess lithium produced by the Li-rich component in the first charge-discharge process. The initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) of LNCM half-cell has been significantly increased from 75.5% ( x = 0) to 108.9% ( x = 0.35). A novel full-cell comprising LNCM@Cr 2 O 5 composite cathode and Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 anode has been developed. Such electrode accordance, i.e., LNCM@Cr 2 O 5 //Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (“L-cell”), shows a particularly high ICE of 97.7%. The “L-cell” can transmit an outstanding reversible capacity up to 250 mA h g −1 and has 94% capacity retention during 50 cycles. It also has superior rate capacities as high as 122 and 94 mA h g −1 at 1.25 and 2.5 A g −1 current densities, which are even better in comparison of Li-rich//graphite full-cell (“G-cell”). The high performance of “L-cell” benefiting from the well-designed coulombic efficiency accordance mechanism displays a great potential for fast charge-discharge applications in future high-energy lithium ion batteries.
A Bifunctional-Modulated Conformal Li/Mn-Rich Layered Cathode for Fast-Charging, High Volumetric Density and Durable Li-Ion Full Cells

Abstract:Abstract Lithium- and manganese-rich (LMR) layered cathode materials hold the great promise in designing the next-generation high energy density lithium ion batteries. However, due to the severe surface phase transformation and structure collapse, stabilizing LMR to suppress capacity fade has been a critical challenge. Here, a bifunctional strategy that integrates the advantages of surface modification and structural design is proposed to address the above issues. A model compound Li 1.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 O 2 (MNC) with semi-hollow microsphere structure is synthesized, of which the surface is modified by surface-treated layer and graphene/carbon nanotube dual layers. The unique structure design enabled high tap density (2.1 g cm −3 ) and bidirectional ion diffusion pathways. The dual surface coatings covalent bonded with MNC via C-O-M linkage greatly improves charge transfer efficiency and mitigates electrode degradation. Owing to the synergistic effect, the obtained MNC cathode is highly conformal with durable structure integrity, exhibiting high volumetric energy density (2234 Wh L −1 ) and predominant capacitive behavior. The assembled full cell, with nanographite as the anode, reveals an energy density of 526.5 Wh kg −1 , good rate performance (70.3% retention at 20 C) and long cycle life (1000 cycles). The strategy presented in this work may shed light on designing other high-performance energy devices.

High Performance Hybrid Mg-Li Ion Batteries with Conversion Cathodes for Low Cost Energy Storage

Abstract:The recently proposed hybrid Mg-Li ion battery technology delivers good reaction kinetics and excellent safety features because it integrates the advantages of the Mg metal anode and the Li+ ion intercalation/conversion electrodes. The inexpensive and resource-abundant FeS is a suitable candidate as a cathode material due to its medium redox potential and high theoretical capacity; however, a conventional FeS cathode suffers from low electronic conductivity, low coulombic efficiency and poor cycling performance. Here, in this work, to overcome these drawbacks, a free-standing membrane electrode with FeS nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanofibers was designed and prepared via a facile electrospinning method. Additionally, because of the absence of inactive materials, such as the current collector and binder, the energy density was enhanced compared with that in the conventional batteries. The hybrid Mg-Li ion battery fabricated in this study can deliver a maximum energy density of similar to 300Wh kg(-1), which is superior to that of most conventional Mg ion batteries. An outstanding cyclic performance for up to 800 cycles with high coulombic efficiencies above 97% was demonstrated, and a specific capacity above 200mAh g(-1) was retained with a current density of 257mA g(-1). An Ultrastable Lithium Metal Anode Enabled by Designed Metal Fluoride Spansules

Abstract:The lithium metal anode (LMA) is considered as a promising star for next-generation high-energy density batteries but is still hampered by the severe growth of uncontrollable lithium dendrites. Here, we design "spansules" made of NaMg(Mn)F-3@C core@shell microstructures as the matrix for the LMA, which can offer a long-lasting release of functional ions into the electrolyte. By the assistance of cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, we reveal that an in situ-formed metal layer and a unique LiF-involved bilayer structure on the Li/electrolyte interface would be beneficial for effectively suppressing the growth of lithium dendrites. As a result, the spansule-modified anode affords a high Coulombic efficiency of 98% for over 1000 cycles at a current density of 2 mA cm(-2), which is the most stable LMA reported so far. When coupling this anode with the Li[Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1]O-2 cathode, the practical full cell further exhibits highly improved capacity retention after 500 cycles.

Abstract:Through elaborate design, a new rechargeable lithium ion battery has been developed by comprising a surface-treated Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 cathode and a nano-structured Li4Ti5O12 anode. After precondition Na2S2O8 treatment, the initial coulombic efficiency of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 cathode has been significantly increased and can be compatible with that of the nano-structured Li4Ti5O12 anode. The optimization of structure and morphology for both active electrode materials result in their remarkable electrochemical performances in respective lithium half-cells. Ultimately, the rechargeable lithium ion full battery consisting of both electrodes delivers a specific capacity of 99.0 mAh g(-1) and a practical energy density of 201 Wh kg(-1), based on the total weight of both active electrode materials. Furthermore, as a promising candidate in the lithium ion battery field, this full battery also achieves highly attractive electrochemical performance with high coulombic efficiency, excellent cycling stability and outstanding rate capability. Abstract:To optimize the potential window and maximize the utilization of the capacity of both negative and positive electrodes, rational design of electrode materials are critically important in full-cell construction of rechargeable batteries. In this work, we propose and fabricate a carbon-confined V2O3/Ni2P/C composite structure for excellent performance lithium ion batteries by taking advantage of the high capacity of V2O3 and low potential of Ni2P. The full cell constructed with V2O3/Ni2P/C as anode and commercial LiMn2O4 as cathode offers a record high energy density of 361.5 Wh kg-1 and excellent cycle stability, outperforming the state-of-the-art work reported in literature.

Abstract:Lithium‐ion batteries have undergone a remarkable development in the past 30 years. However, conventional electrodes are insufficient for the ever‐increasing demand of high‐energy batteries. Here, reported is a thick electrode with a dense structure, as an alternative to the commonly recognized porous framework. A low‐temperature sintering technology with the aid of aqueous solvent, high pressure, and an ion‐conductive additive is originally developed for preparing the LiCoO2 (LCO)/Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) dense‐structure electrode as the representative cathode/anode material. The 400 µm thick cathode with 110 mg cm−2 mass loading achieves a high specific capacity of 131.2 mAh g−1 with a good capacity retention of 96% over 150 cycles, far exceeding the commercial counterpart (≈40 µm) of 54.1 mAh g−1 with 39%. The ultrathick electrode of 1300 µm thickness presents a remarkable area capacity of 28.6 mAh cm−2 that is 16 times that of the commercial electrode. The full cell based on the dense electrodes delivers an extremely high areal capacity of 14.4 mAh cm−2. The ion‐diffusion coefficients of the densely sintered electrodes increase by nearly three orders of magnitude. This design opens up a new avenue for scalable and sustainable material manufacturing towards various practical applications.

Abstract:Lithium metal anodes (LMAs) are the most promising candidates for high-energy-density batteries due to the high theoretical specific capacity and lowest potential. However, the practical application of LMAs is hampered by the short lifespan and unsatisfactory lithium utilization (<50%). An oxide-oxide heterojunction enhanced with nanochamber structure design is proposed to improve lithium utilization and cycling performance of LMA under ultrahigh rates. Typically, a MnO2 -ZnO heterojunction provides high binding energy for strong absorption of Li-ions and intimately bonded interfaces for fast transfer of electrons. Under the guidance of the smooth Li-ion migration and rapid electron flow, the Li metal can be restricted as thin layers within submicro scale in nanochambers with constrain boundary and stress dissipation, inhibiting the local agglomeration and blocking. Thus, the lithiophilic active sites can be effectively exposed to the Li-ions within submicro scale, improving the reversible conversion for high lithium utilization during long-term cycling. As such, the Li@MnZnO/CNF electrode achieves a high lithium utilization of 70% at a record-high current density of 50 mA cm-2 with areal capacity of 10 mAh cm-2 . This work offers an avenue to improve lithium utilization for long-lifespan LMAs working under high current densities and capacities.

High-capacity full lithium-ion cells based on nanoarchitectured ternary manganese–nickel–cobalt carbonate and its lithiated derivative

Abstract:A full lithium-ion battery cell has been assembled based on nanoarchitectured ternary manganese–nickel–cobalt compounds, in which multi-shell spherical Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13(CO3)0.8 serves as the anode and the subsequently lithiated Li-excess Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 with a yolk–shell structure acts as the cathode. The performance of a lithium-ion full battery significantly relies on the electrochemical properties of both anode and cathode materials. A multi-shell carbonate anode is first tested in a half battery cell with metallic lithium as the counter electrode, revealing an unexpectedly high initial charge capacity of 1173.1 mA h g−1 at a specific current of 25 mA g−1, which is two times higher than its theoretical capacity. Moreover, when cycled at 250 mA g−1 for 100 electrochemical cycles, this carbonate anode retains a final specific capacity of 434.6 mA h g−1. Accordingly, a yolk–shell-structured Li-excess layered cathode material has been facilely obtained through lithiation of carbonate compounds, showing an initial discharge capacity of 250.7 mA h g−1 when cycled at 0.1 C (1 C = 250 mA g−1) in a half battery cell. Furthermore, this cathode retains a final capacity of 156.3 mA h g−1 at 1 C after 100 cycles and exhibits an outstanding capacity retention of 90.3%. Such remarkable electrochemical properties of carbonate anode and Li-excess oxide cathode materials are attributed to their nanoarchitectures resulting from the water-based solvothermal process, i.e., multi-shell and yolk–shell structures composed of numerous primary nanoparticles, in comparison with mediocre performances from monodispersive carbonate microspheres and Li-excess oxide nanoparticles synthesized via an ethylene-glycol-based solvothermal method. Combination of the nanostructured ternary transition metal carbonate anode and the Li-excess layered cathode into a full lithium-ion battery results in a remarkable specific capacity above 250 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C in the voltage range of 0.1–4.0 V, which demonstrates the application as a very promising electrochemical device for future energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:Lithium metal is the "holy grail" of anodes, capable of unlocking the full potential of cathodes in next‐generation batteries. However, the use of pure lithium anodes faces several challenges in terms of safety, cycle life, and rate capability. Herein, a solution‐processable conjugated microporous thermosetting polymer (CMP) is developed. The CMP can be further converted into a large‐scale membrane with nanofluidic channels (5–6 Å). These channels can serve as facile and selective Li‐ion diffusion pathways on the surfaces of lithium anodes, thereby ensuring stable lithium stripping/plating even at high areal current densities. CMP‐modified lithium anodes (CMP‐Li) exhibit cycle stability of 2550 h at an areal current density of 20 mA cm−2. Furthermore, CMP is readily amenable to solution‐processing and spray coating, rendering it highly applicable to continuous roll‐to‐roll lithium metal treatment processes. Pouch cells with CMP‐Li as the anode and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) as the cathode exhibits a stable energy density of 400 Wh kg−1.

Li-free Cathode Materials for High Energy Density Lithium Batteries

Abstract:Conversion-type cathode materials, such as transition metal halides, chalcogenides, and oxides, demonstrate high operational voltages and high specific capacities, offering high energy densities for rechargeable lithium-metal batteries. In this review, a series of low-cost, environmentally benign, and high energy density Li-free cathode materials are selected based on thermodynamic calculations. Coupled with Li/C anodes, these cathodes (e.g., S, FeF3, CuF2, FeS2, and MnO2) have the potential to offer energy densities of 1,000-1,600 Wh kg(-1) and 1,500-2,200 Wh L-1 at the cell level. Their main challenges, including capacity fading, high voltage hysteresis, large volume change, and parasitic reactions with electrolytes, are discussed. Strategies to circumvent these issues based on the state-of-the-art technologies are summarized. It seems that all of these challenges are able to be solved. We believe that with the development of practical Li-metal-based anodes and solid-state electrolytes, conversion-type cathodes have a promising future for the next-generation high energy density energy storage devices.
Lithium-Rich Cathode Materials for High Energy-Density Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:With the development of mobile communication equipment and electric cars, there is an, increasing demand for high capacity lithium-ion batteries. It is difficult for the present commercialized lithium-ion power batteries to meet the requirement of one charge to travel above 500 km, because of low discharge capacity, like lithium iron phosphate and ternary cathode material, possessing the discharge capacity lower than 180 mAh/g. Therefore, the specific capacity of cathode materials has become a bottleneck to increase the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-rich cathode materials with large specific capacity (>= 250 mAh/g), high discharge voltage (3. 8 V), and high theory energy density (900 Wh/kg) are thought as ideal cathode material of power batteries for electric cars in the future, so, it is of great realistic significance to study the lithium-rich cathode materials with high specific capacity. This paper reviews the development of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries as well as the situation of recent commercial cathode materials with low specific capacity. Structures and electrochemical properties of lithium-rich cathode materials as a new next-generation higher capacity are summarized, and the discharge mechanism and the latest progress in modifications are presented. Moreover, some problems related with lithium-rich materials for high energy-density lithium-ion batteries are presented, followed by the corresponding ideas and approaches of solution.
A High-Efficient Stable Surface-Prelithiated Li1.2ni0.13co0.13mn0.54o2 Cathode Enabled by Sacrificial Lithium Nitrides for High-Energy-Density Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Lithium -rich cathode materials with superior practical specific capacity over 250 mAh g-1 are considered as one of the resolutions for high -energy -density lithium -ion batteries, while the intrinsic capacity loss caused by solid electrolyte interface (SEI) formation on the anode impedes the increase of energy density. To address this issue, we propose a composite cathode prelithiation strategy including a carbon -incorporated lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiCPON) layer and a sacrificial Li3N (Sac. Li3N) layer, which can not only compensate for the capacity loss effectively and controllably with a high lithium utilization rate over 85% but also provide outstanding atmosphere stability with an 80.2% lithium utilization rate after exposed in dry air for 8 hours. The energy densities achieve 489.5 Wh kg -1 and 497.3 Wh kg- 1 initially after cathode prelithiation in full cells paired with Si/C and SiOx/C anodes, corresponding to a 11.9% and 11.6% increase, respectively. The energy densities still remain 318.7 Wh kg- 1 and 319.7 Wh kg- 1 after 50 cycles with an increase of 13.7% and 11.7%, respectively. The cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) and SEI layers are mutually optimized and the electrolyte adsorption and degradation are suppressed after cathode prelithiation. Our work has demonstrated that such a composite cathode prelithiation strategy provides the possibility for large-scale industrial production, transportation, and conservation of prelithiated lithium -rich cathodes to achieve high -energy -density lithium -ion batteries.
500 Wh kg −1 Class Li Metal Battery Enabled by a Self‐Organized Core–Shell Composite Anode

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal offers the highest projected energy density as a battery anode, however its extremely high reactivity induces dendrite growth and dead Li formation during repeated charge/discharge processes, resulting in both poor reversibility and catastrophic failure. Approaches reported to date often seek to suppress dendrites formation at the expense of energy density. Here, a strategy that resolves the above conflict and achieves a dendrite‐free and long‐term reversible Li metal anode is reported. A self‐organized core–shell composite anode, comprising an outer sheath of lithiated liquid metal (LixLMy) and an inner layer of Li metal, is developed, which posesses high electrical and ionic conductivity, and physically separates Li from the electrolyte. The introduction of LixLMy not only prevents dendrite formation, but also eliminates the use of copper as an inert substrate. Full cells made of such composite anodes and commercially available LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) cathodes deliver ultrahigh energy density of 1500 Wh L−1 and 483 Wh kg−1. The high capacity can be maintained for more than 500 cycles, with fading rate of less than 0.05% per cycle. Pairing with LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) further raises the energy density to 1732 Wh L−1 and 514 Wh kg−1.

Abstract:The pursuit of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) hinges upon the relentless development of advanced cathode materials. The inherent high operating voltage renders oxide cathodes the most favored option for this objective. Even with the exceptional capacity of ∼300 mAh/g exhibited by lithium-rich manganese oxide cathodes, the cell-level energy density at present remains constrained at 400 Wh/kg. Consequently, a transformative breakthrough is urgently needed to revolutionize oxide cathode materials with ultrahigh capacity (>300 mAh/g) and thereby enable the design of LIBs for a broad range of applications. In this Focus Review, the electrochemical performances of various oxide cathodes are comprehensively scrutinized, with particular emphasis on those characterized by a Li/O ratio greater than 0.6 (Li1+x TM1–x O2, x > 0.2, where TM denotes transition metal). We emphasize that the construction of multidimensional defects offers a promising means of resolving the present quandary regarding the trade-off between structural stability and capacity for high-capacity oxide cathodes.

A Biomass-Based Integral Approach Enables Li-S Full Pouch Cells with Exceptional Power Density and Energy Density

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, as part of the post-lithium-ion batteries (post-LIBs), are expected to deliver significantly higher energy densities. Their power densities, however, are today considerably worse than that of the LIBs, limiting the Li-S batteries to very few specific applications that need low power and long working time. With the rapid development of single cell components (cathode, anode, or electrolyte) in the last few years, it is expected that an integrated approach can maximize the power density without compromising the energy density in a Li-S full cell. Here, this goal is achieved by using a novel biomass porous carbon matrix (PCM) in the anode, as well as N-Co9 S8 nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the cathode. The authors' approach unlocks the potential of the electrodes and enables the Li-S full pouch cells with unprecedented power densities and energy densities (325 Wh kg-1 and 1412 W kg-1 , respectively). This work addresses the problem of low power densities in the current Li-S technology, thus making the Li-S batteries a strong candidate in more application scenarios.
Enhancing Lithium-Ion Diffusion Kinetics in a 3D Lithium Metal Host through Surface Modification with Hierarchical Multimetal Oxides

Abstract:Lithium metal is a promising anode candidate to achieve high-energy-density lithium metal batteries (LMBs) due to its ultrahigh theoretical capacity (3860 mA h g-1) and low electrochemical potential (-3.04 V vs S.H.E). Unfortunately, the commercialization of lithium metal anodes is hindered by the growth of Li dendrites and the infinite Li volume changes during the cycling process. Herein, we introduce a 3D hierarchical multimetal oxide nanowire framework as a current collector for Li metal anodes. The hierarchical metal oxide layers of CoO and CuxO provide abundant Li nucleation sites and thus offer uniform Li plating and regulate Li nucleation during the charge/discharge process. As a result, half cells present a prolonging Coulombic efficiency of 97% at 1 mA cm-2 with a capacity of 1 mA h cm-2 for over 300 cycles. A stable cyclability of symmetric cells is demonstrated under 1 mA cm-2 with a capacity of 1 mA h cm-2 for 1500 h. Full cells paired with an LFP cathode show a stable capacity of 131.5 mA h g-1 with a capacity retention of 92% for 200 cycles. These results will shed insights into the design of 3D Cu current collectors for high-performance composite Li metal anodes.

Abstract:Using a coated Li metal as an anode and LiCoO2 as a cathode, an aqueous rechargeable battery is built up, whose average discharge voltage is 3.70 V. This high voltage stability is due to the "crossover'' effect of Li+ ions, which is different from the traditional ways of increasing overpotentials. The total energy density can be 465 W h kg(-1).

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) using lithium metal anodes and high‐voltage cathodes have been deemed as one of the most promising high‐energy‐density battery technology. However, its practical application is largely hindered by the notorious dendrite growth of lithium metal anode, fast structure degradation of cathode and insufficient electrode‐electrolyte interphase kinetics. Here, a solvation structure regulation strategy is developed for LMBs using lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and lithium difluoro(bisoxalato)phosphate (LiDFBOP) as anion regulators. The incorporation of TFSI− in the solvation sheath reduces the desolvation energy of Li+, and DFBOP− promotes the formation of high ion‐conductive and sustainable inorganic‐rich interphases on electrodes. Significantly enhanced performance is demonstrated on Li||LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 pouch cells, with 84.6% capacity retention after 150 cycles in 6.0 Ah pouch cells and an ultra‐high rate capability up to 5 C in 2.0 Ah pouch cells. Furthermore, a pouch cell with an ultra‐large capacity of 39.0 Ah is fabricated and achieves an ultra‐high energy density of 521.3 Wh kg−1.
