Abstract:The crystal growth kinetics is crucial for the controllable preparation and performance modulation of metal nanocrystals (NCs). However, the study of growth mechanisms is significantly limited by characterization techniques, and it is still challenging to in situ capture the growth process. Real-time and real-space imaging techniques at the atomic scale can promote the understanding of microdynamics for NC growth. Herein, the growth of Pd NCs on monolayer MoS2 under different atmospheres was in situ studied by environmental transmission electron microscopy. Introducing carbon monoxide can modulate the diffusion of Pd monomers, resulting in the epitaxial growth of Pd NCs with a uniform orientation. The electron energy loss spectroscopy and theoretical calculations showed that the CO adsorption assured the specific exposed facets and good uniformity of Pd NCs. The insight into the gas-solid interface interaction and the microscopic growth mechanism of NCs may shed light on the precise synthesis of NCs on two-dimensional (2D) materials.

Abstract:Transitional metal sulfide/carbon hybrids with well-defined structures could not only maximize the functional properties of each constituent but engender some unique synergistic effects, holding great promise for applications in Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors and for catalysis. Herein, a facile and versatile approach is developed to controllably grow 2D ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets with a large quantity of exposed edges onto various 1D carbons, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), electrospun carbon nanofibers, and Te-nanowire-templated carbon nanofibers. The typical approach involves the employment of layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled polyelectrolyte, which controls spatially the uniform growth and orientation of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets on these 1D carbons irrespective of their surface properties. Such unique structures of the as-prepared CNTs@MoS2 hybrid are significantly favorable for the fast diffusions of both Li-ions and electrons, satisfying the kinetic requirements of high-power lithium ion batteries. As a result, CNTs@MoS2 hybrids exhibit excellent electrochemical performances for lithium storage, including a high reversible capacity (1027 mAh g(-1)), high-rate capability (610 mAh g(-1) at 5 C), and excellent cycling stability (negligible capacity loss after 200 continuous cycles).
Controllable Growth of MoS2 on Au Foils and Its Application in Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of monolayer MoS2 on metal substrates is the basic premise for exploring the intrinsic electronic structure, some novel physical properties, and engineering its application in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In recent years, we have been working on low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) growth of monolayer MoS2 on Au foils, with the domain size can be tuned from several hundred nanometers to dozens of microns. By introducing H-2 as carrier gas, we have synthesized large domain monolayer MoS2 triangular flakes on Au foils, with the edge length approaching to ca. 81 mu m. By using low-energy electron microscopy/diffraction (LEEM/LEED) method, the crystal orientations and domain boundaries of monolayer MoS2 flakes directly on Au foils are further on-site identified. Of particular interest, the nanosized MoS2 flakes on Au foils are proven to be excellent electrocatalysts for HER, featured by a rather low Tafel slope (ca. 61 mV/dec) and a relative high exchange current density (ca. 38.1 mu A/cm(2)). In this review, we summarized controllable growth and on-site domain boundary imaging of monolayer MoS2 on Au foils and its application in HER together with a brief discussion on the future directions, challenges and opportunities in this research area.

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of monolayer MoS2 is essential for fulfilling the application potentials of MoS2 in optoelectronics and valleytronics, etc. Herein, we report the scalable growth of high quality, domain size tunable (edge length from ∼ 200 nm to 50 μm), strictly monolayer MoS2 flakes or even complete films on commercially available Au foils, via low pressure chemical vapor deposition method. The as-grown MoS2 samples can be transferred onto arbitrary substrates like SiO2/Si and quartz with a perfect preservation of the crystal quality, thus probably facilitating its versatile applications. Of particular interest, the nanosized triangular MoS2 flakes on Au foils are proven to be excellent electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction, featured by a rather low Tafel slope (61 mV/decade) and a relative high exchange current density (38.1 μA/cm(2)). The excellent electron coupling between MoS2 and Au foils is considered to account for the extraordinary hydrogen evolution reaction activity. Our work reports the synthesis of monolayer MoS2 when introducing metal foils as substrates, and presents sound proof that monolayer MoS2 assembled on a well selected electrode can manifest a hydrogen evolution reaction property comparable with that of nanoparticles or few-layer MoS2 electrocatalysts.

Abstract:MoO2 is used as a new source material for the growth of large area and high optical quality monolayer MoS2. However, a systematic study of the growth parameters is still missing and large-area growth of discreet single crystals is still challenging. Hereby, we report the shape evolution of monolayer growth of MoS2 and develop a methodology to achieve centimeter-scaled discrete MoS2 by adopting MoO2 as Mo source material in an atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition process. Our results indicate the growth of monolayer MoS2 could benefit from the precise control of the introduction time of sulfur and the S/MoO2 ratio in experiments. Micro-Raman and photoluminescence spectra confirm the properties of the material. E-beam lithography was utilized to make contact with the as-grown MoS2 located at the selective area. The electrical properties of MoS2 with different morphologies were compared. In the end, the persistent photoconductivity properties of monolayer MoS2 were emphasized and the underlying mechanism was proposed. These studies demonstrate a better understanding of the growth and application of MoS2-based 2D materials.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been deemed as one of the promising noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but it suffers from the inert basal plane and low electronic conductivity. Regulating the morphology of MoS2 during the synthesis on conductive substrates is a synergistic strategy for enhancing the HER performance. In this work, vertical MoS2 nanosheets were fabricated on carbon cloth using an atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition method. The growth process could be effectively tuned through introducing hydrogen gas during vapor deposition process, resulting in nanosheets with increased edge density. The mechanism for edge-enriching through controlling the growth atmosphere is systematically studied. The as-prepared MoS2 exhibits excellent HER activity due to the combination of optimized microstructures and coupling with carbon cloth. Our findings provide new insights to design advanced MoS2-based electrocatalysts for HER.

Edge Reconstruction-Dependent Growth Kinetics of MoS2

Abstract:Understanding the growth mechanisms of multielement two-dimensional (2D) crystals is challenging because of the unbalanced stoichiometry and possible reconstruction of their edges. Here, we present a systematic theoretical study on the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth mechanism of MoS2. We found that the growth kinetics of MoS2 highly depends on its edge reconstruction determined by concentrations of Mo and S in the growth environment. Based on the calculated energies of nucleation and propagation of various MoS2 edges, we predicted the transition of a MoS2 island growth from a regime of a triangle enclosed by Mo-terminated zigzag edges that are passivated by 50% S (Mo-II edges), to a regime of continuous evolution within a triangle, hexagon, and inverted triangle with 75%-S-terminated edges (S-III edges) and Mo-II edges, and finally to a regime of triangles with Mo-terminated zigzag edges that are passivated by 100% S (Mo-III edges) by tuning the growth condition from Mo-rich to S-rich, which provides a reasonable explanation to many experimental observations. This study provides a general guideline on theoretical studies of 2D crystals' growth mechanisms, deepens our understanding on the growth mechanism of multielement 2D crystals, and is beneficial for the controllable synthesis of various 2D crystals.

Abstract:The effect of hydrogen flow on MoS2 film synthesis via chemical vapor deposition is studied systematically. Large‐sized monolayer‐ and bilayer‐MoS2 triangles can be synthesized controllably at given temperatures. Optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy are used to characterize the number of layers, purity, and uniformity of the MoS2 triangle films. Moreover, the back‐gated field‐effect transistors (FETs) based on the monolayer‐ and bilayer‐MoS2 channels are fabricated using traditional micro‐nanoprocessing technology. Electrical behaviors are investigated and the bilayer‐MoS2 FETs show preferable performance with high mobility (≈21 cm2 V−1 s−1), on‐current (≈22 µA µm−1), and a small degradation in the on/off ratio (1.1 × 107). Finally, the semiconductive phase MoS2 (2H‐MoS2) is transformed to a metallic phase (1T‐MoS2) to reduce the resistance in metal‐MoS2 contact. The FET device with 1T‐MoS2 contact enhances mobility (≈45 cm2 V−1 s−1) and on‐current (≈50 µA µm−1) compared with the 2H‐MoS2 FETs. This work sheds light on the synthesis of variable‐layer MoS2 films and paves the way for further development regarding MoS2 film‐based devices.

Abstract:A confined growth strategy of MoS2 is proposed by using a 2D metal‐organic framework to expose more edge sites and hence largely enhance its hydrogen evolution reaction performance. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the exposed active edge sites of MoS2 are limited due to its intrinsic stacking property. Herein, a highly exposed MoS2 hybrid electrocatalyst is prepared by a confined strategy of the pores of a 2D metal‐organic framework (MOF). A low overpotential of 76 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 73 mV dec−1 are achieved, which indicated greater efficiency than pristine MoS2. The denotative growth of MoS2 from the internal pore of 2D MOF on the surface effectively prevents its stacking and exposes much more active edge sites. Experimental results show that parts of Co are incorporated into MoS2, producing strong electronic interaction between Co and Mo atoms and accounting for the excellent HER activity of MoS2. This work demonstrates a confined strategy to prepare nanomaterials with highly exposed edge sites and enhanced intrinsic activity.

Abstract:accommodating the rapid development of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has become a powerful tool for their batch production with desirable characteristics, such as high crystal quality, large domain size, and tunable domain shape. The crystallinity and morphology of the growth substrates usually play a crucial role in the CVD synthesis of high-quality monolayer MoS2, a kind of 2D layered material which has ignited huge interest in nanoelectronics, optoelectronics and energy harvesting, etc. Herein, by utilizing a low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) system, we demonstrate a regioselective synthesis of monolayer MoS2 on the corrugated single-crystal LaAlO3 (100) with twin crystal domains induced by the second-order phase transition. Unique dendritic morphologies with tunable nucleation densities were obtained in different regions of the undulated substrate, presenting a strong substrate modulation effect. Interestingly, the exposure of abundant active edge sites along with the rather high nucleation density makes the monolayer dendritic MoS2 a good electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), particularly featured by a rather high exchange current density (70.4 mu A cm(-2)). Furthermore, uniform monolayer MoS2 films can also be obtained and transferred to arbitrary substrates. We believe that this work provides a new growth system for the controllable synthesis of 2D layered materials with unique dendritic morphologies, as well as its great application potential in energy conversion and harvesting.

Abstract:Through a facile and effective strategy by employing lithium molten salts the controlled synthesis of 2H- and 1T-MoS2 monolayers with high-yield production is achieved. Both phases of MoS2 monolayers exhibit high stabilities. When used as a catalyst for hydrogen evolution, these phased MoS2 monolayers deliver respective advantages in the field of electro- and photo-catalytic hydrogen evolution.
Growth of Large-Area Aligned Molybdenum Nanowires by High Temperature Chemical Vapor Deposition: Synthesis, Growth Mechanism, and Device Application

Abstract:Large-area aligned Mo nanowires have been grown on stainless steel substrates by high-temperature chemical vapor deposition with the use of Mo metal. The detailed physical and chemical growth processes regarding the formation of the nanowires have been investigated using mass spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry analysis, as well as structure analysis by electron microscopy. In reference to Gibbs energy calculation, our study reveals that the growth relies on the decomposition of MoO2 vapors through condensation of its vapor at high substrate temperatures. The aligned growth is a result of competing growth with the nanowires normal to the substrate surface reaching the final growth front. The field emission measurement and the vacuum luminescent tube study show that the Mo nanowires have potential application as electron emitters.
Phase-dependent growth of Pt on MoS 2 for highly efficient H 2 evolution

Abstract:Crystal phase is a key factor determining the properties, and hence functions, of two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) 1 , 2 . The TMD materials, explored for diverse applications 3 – 8 , commonly serve as templates for constructing nanomaterials 3 , 9 and supported metal catalysts 4 , 6 – 8 . However, how the TMD crystal phase affects the growth of the secondary material is poorly understood, although relevant, particularly for catalyst development. In the case of Pt nanoparticles on two-dimensional MoS 2 nanosheets used as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction 7 , only about two thirds of Pt nanoparticles were epitaxially grown on the MoS 2 template composed of the metallic/semimetallic 1T/1T′ phase but with thermodynamically stable and poorly conducting 2H phase mixed in. Here we report the production of MoS 2 nanosheets with high phase purity and show that the 2H-phase templates facilitate the epitaxial growth of Pt nanoparticles, whereas the 1T′ phase supports single-atomically dispersed Pt (s-Pt) atoms with Pt loading up to 10 wt
Unlocking the Ultrahigh‐Current‐Density Hydrogen Evolution on 2H‐MoS2 via Simultaneous Structural Control across Seven Orders of Magnitude

Abstract:Simultaneous structural control of 2H‐MoS2 across seven orders of magnitude is realized by confining its conformal growth within a tubular graphene framework. This multilevel structural control strategy is shown to be capable of cooperatively boosting hydrogen evolution on MoS2, unlocking its potential for practical hydrogen evolution at ampere‐level current densities. Members of transition metal dichalcogenides, particularly molybdenum disulfide, have been recognized as promising efficient and durable earth‐abundant catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Despite the recent significant progress, the HER performance of MoS2 is still far from satisfactory, especially at high current densities. Here, a simultaneous multilevel structural control strategy is reported to cooperatively boost hydrogen evolution on 2H‐MoS2, unlocking its potential for practical hydrogen evolution at ampere‐level current densities. By confining the epitaxial growth of few‐layered, curved MoS2 nanosheets within a tubular mesoporous graphitic framework, one can achieve deliberate structural control of MoS2 across seven orders of magnitude on the length scale. The resulting MoS2@C supertubes, benefiting from their unique structural features across atomic‐to‐microscopic scales, are characterized by abundant edge sites and sulfur vacancies, facilitated charge and mass transport, and rapid gas bubble removal. As a consequence, such MoS2@C supertubes exhibit exceptional high‐current‐density HER activity surpassing previously reported 2H‐MoS2 catalysts and even commercial Pt/C catalysts. This work demonstrates the validity of multilevel structural engineering of 2H‐MoS2 by confinement growth, opening a viable route of developing low‐cost catalysts toward practical hydrogen evolution.

Exploring Kinetic Control for the Growth of Layered MoS2(1-x)Se2x Alloy and Its Electrocatalytic Activity in Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Although controlled growth of monolayer two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) alloys has recently been achieved, a comprehensive understanding of their growth mechanism remains a major chal-lenge due to the complex nucleation kinetics. In this study, the synthesis of large-area ternary MoS2(1-x)Se2x alloys by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is effectively and efficiently controlled. Both exper-imental and theoretical investigations are conducted to explore the influence of precursors on growth kinetics. The results suggest that the introduction of Se not only reduces nucleation sites but also lowers diffusion energy, thereby promoting lateral growth of the alloy, which is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calcula-tions. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic performance of MoS2 film with discretely distributed triangle sheets is further enhanced by the incorporation of Se atoms during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The Gibbs free energy of adsorbed hydrogen atom (Delta GH*) has been calculated by DFT, showing that the replacement of S with Se at the edge site compared with the in-plane site would significantly reduce the Gibbs free energy. This study is crucial for improving the comprehension of the growth dynamics of TMD alloys and promoting their utilization in electrocatalytic hydrogen generation.

Abstract:The space-confined growth by in-situ formed polysaccharides during hydrothermal process is successfully employed to fabricate ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets, which further evolve to MoS2/C evenly integrating nanosheets (2-4 nm) with conducting carbon after carbonization. The MoS2/C exhibits an excellent activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a small onset overpotential of similar to 80 mV and a high current density of 88 mA cm(-2) at eta = 200 mV, which is associated with the enriched rim-sites on ultrathin MoS2 and the improved conductivity by carbon matrix. This work demonstrates that the ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets within carbon, possessing synergistically-enhanced activity and conductivity for HER, are feasible through the space-confined growth based on polysaccharide matrix, and this would open up new opportunities for exploiting highly efficient electrocatalysts. Controlled Growth of MoS2 by Atomic Layer Deposition on Patterned Gold Pads

Abstract:Approaches to synthesize large-area MoS2 thin films have been extensively investigated in recent years towards system-level micro-/nanoelectronics applications. Methods including chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) can enable uniform and wafer-scale MoS2 films on insulating substrates, but without selective control on the growth location. Herein, we report a controlled growth of ultra-thin MoS2 films on Au pads patterned on insulating substrates using ALD-based techniques. Clear difference in the incubation period duration of the ALD process among different substrate surfaces has been observed. Selective growth of MoS2 can be achieved on patterned Au on SiO2/Si substrate while the incubation period is shorter on sapphire substrate as compared with that on SiO2/Si. In addition, the influence of deposition temperature on the film growth dynamics on difference surfaces has been studied. Such controlled growth of MoS2 by ALD can be very attractive in future optoelectronics applications and the synthesis on patterned Au is promising in fulfilling its application potentials such as electrocatalyst in hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract:Monodispersed MoS2 nanospheres were successfully synthesized by using SiO2 as hard template. The size and morphology of the MoS2 nanospheres could be finely controlled by the content of SiO2 and sulfur precursors. Furthermore, higher surface area of monodispersed MoS2 nanospheres exhibited high reaction rate for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of dibenzenethiophene (DBT).
