Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a two-dimensional layered material, has attracted ever-growing interest as one of the most promising non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, its catalytic efficiency is far from that of the best-performing Pt-based catalysts due to insufficient active sites and poor conductivity. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) simulations indicate that the catalytic activity of MoS2 could be improved through synergistic effects between the graphene substrate and Ni atom adsorption. Following this result, we designed and synthesized dual-modified MoS2 nanosheets with nanoporous Ni and reduced graphite oxide, which show a low onset potential (85 mV), a small Tafel slope (71.3 mV dec–1), and a high cycling stability as HER catalysts. Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is an extensively studied promising non-noble catalyst because of its remarkable performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the primary factors that affect its catalytic activity have not been analysed comprehensively and quantitatively; this impedes the further design and development of MoS2-based electrocatalysts. Herein, using novel porous MoS2 nanosheets prepared via a controlled and scalable KOH-assisted exfoliation pathway, we methodically studied the contributions of bore edge active sites to the catalytic activity towards the HER. To make the preparation safer, 2H-MoS2 instead of 1T-MoS2 that needs to be prepared with butyllithium has been chosen to synthesize porous MoS2 nanosheets. A comparative study revealed that the overpotential of porous MoS2 nanosheets exhibited an extreme point, which was predominantly due to the different densities of bore edge active sites derived from different quantities of KOH. Amazingly, the HER performance of MoS2 nanosheets experienced the most obvious improvement after these nanosheets were treated with 37.5 wt% KOH. A series of tests and density functional theory calculations were conducted to explain the experimental results, which were consistent with each other. Furthermore, this method has been proven to be universal since porous WS2 and SnS2 nanosheets have been prepared by the same route. This study presents novel insights and reveals a new, controlled, and scalable chemical avenue for programming electrocatalysts based on MoS2 or other layered materials.
A ternary hybrid of Zn-doped MoS2-RGO for highly effective electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Modification of MoS2-based catalysts is effective in solving the overdependence of hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) on noble metal catalysts. In this work, a Zn-doped molybdenum disulfide-reduced graphene oxide (Zn-MoS2-RGO) hybrid was synthesized in one step employing a hydrothermal method. By substituting the position of Mo, uniform doping with Zn improved the catalytic activity of MoS2 for HER. The interlayer spacing of MoS2 increased from 0.65 to 0.75 nm, demonstrating RGO effectively interpolate into MoS2 nanosheets. This prevented aggregation and exposed more edge active sites of MoS2. According to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the layered structure of the MoS2 nanosheets doped with Zn and intercalated with RGO promoted charge transfer and resulted in outstanding hydrogen evolution activity. Compared with MoS2 (6.86 eV), the Zn-MoS2-RGO hybrid (5.47 eV) with a considerably lower energy level value exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance. Under optimal conditions, at a potential of -0.3 V vs. RHE, the current density reached -169 mA cm-2 in a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution, 4.78 μmol of H2 was produced in 6 h, and the Faraday efficiency reached 92%. The results obtained herein indicated that Zn-MoS2-RGO was a promising candidate for application in electrocatalytic HER.

Abstract:The design and engineering of low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has attracted increasing interest in renewable energy research. Herein, MoS2 nanosheet-coated CoS2 nanowire arrays supported on carbon cloth (MoS2/CoS2/CC) were prepared by a two-step procedure that entailed the hydrothermal growth of Co(OH)(2) nanowire arrays on carbon cloth followed by reaction with (NH4)(2)MoS4 to grow an overlayer of MoS2 nanosheets. Electrochemical studies showed that the obtained 3D electrode exhibited excellent HER activity with an overpotential of -87 mV at 10 mA cm(-2), a small Tafel slope of 73.4 mV dec(-1) and prominent electrochemical durability. The results presented herein may offer a new methodology for the design and engineering of effective multilevel structured catalysts for the HER based on earth-abundant components.

Abstract:Promising catalytic activity from molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is attributed to active sites located along the edges of its two-dimensional layered crystal structure, but its performance is currently limited by the density and reactivity of active sites, poor electrical transport, and inefficient electrical contact to the catalyst. Here we report dramatically enhanced HER catalysis (an electrocatalytic current density of 10 mA/cm(2) at a low overpotential of -187 mV vs RHE and a Tafel slope of 43 mV/decade) from metallic nanosheets of 1T-MoS2 chemically exfoliated via lithium intercalation from semiconducting 2H-MoS2 nanostructures grown directly on graphite. Structural characterization and electrochemical studies confirmed that the nanosheets of the metallic MoS2 polymorph exhibit facile electrode kinetics and low-loss electrical transport and possess a proliferated density of catalytic active sites. These distinct and previously unexploited features of 1T-MoS2 make these metallic nanosheets a highly competitive earth-abundant HER catalyst.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been deemed as one of the promising noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but it suffers from the inert basal plane and low electronic conductivity. Regulating the morphology of MoS2 during the synthesis on conductive substrates is a synergistic strategy for enhancing the HER performance. In this work, vertical MoS2 nanosheets were fabricated on carbon cloth using an atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition method. The growth process could be effectively tuned through introducing hydrogen gas during vapor deposition process, resulting in nanosheets with increased edge density. The mechanism for edge-enriching through controlling the growth atmosphere is systematically studied. The as-prepared MoS2 exhibits excellent HER activity due to the combination of optimized microstructures and coupling with carbon cloth. Our findings provide new insights to design advanced MoS2-based electrocatalysts for HER.

Abstract:Since the electrocatalytic activity of layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) closely depends on its exposed edges, the morphology and size of the material are critically important. Herein, we introduce a novel solvent-evaporation-assisted intercalation method to fabricate the hybrid of alternating MoS2 sheets and reduced graphene oxide layers, in which the nanosize of the MoS2 nanosheets can be effectively controlled by leveraging the confinement effect within the two-dimensional graphene layers. Significantly, the resulting MoS2/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composite shows excellent catalytic activity for HER characterized by higher current densities and lower onset potentials than the conventional pre-exfoliated RGO supported MoS2 nanosheets. Further experiments on the effect of oxidation degree of graphene, the crystallinity of MoS2, and the exposed active site density on the HER performance of the MoS2/RGO composites show that there is an optimum condition for the catalytic activity of HER due to a balance between the numbers of exposed active sites of MoS2 and the internal conductive channels provided by graphene.

Abstract:In this study, ultra-thin and porous molybdenum selenide (MoSe2) nanosheets were prepared through a modified liquid exfoliation method as efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This novel structure enables the exposure of more catalytically active sites and moreover maintains effective electron transport, resulting in a small peak potential of ∼75 mV as well as long-term durability. In addition, due to the facile and economical preparation method as well as its eco-friendly synthetic conditions, this study provides a high-performance HER catalyst with promising commercial application prospects.

Abstract:MoS2 has been considered as a non-precious alternative to platinum based electrocatalyst for electrochemical hydrogen evolution. Since most of the active site exists on the edges of MoS2, a material design that could increase the exposure of the edges could improve its catalytic activity. In this work, we prepared small sized and few-layered MoS2 that is vertically aligned on three-dimensional interconnected porous carbon nanosheets (IPC). Benefiting from exposure of MoS2 edges, MoS2/IPC composite exhibits a high catalytic activity (225 mA cm(-2) at -250 mV vs. RHE, and Tafel slope of 38 mV dec(-1)) and maintains steady performance for several hours. Since the procedure to prepare MoS2/IPC composites is scalable and cost-effective, our method of preparing few-layered MoS2 on porous carbon shows great potential as a competitive electrocatalysts for HER.

Abstract:Fabrication of high-performance and low-cost metal-based compounds as electrocatalysts by a simple strategy is crucial for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, MnS-MoS2 nanosheets were in situ grown on a laser-ablated Mo plate (MnS-MoS2/LA-Mo) through a one-step hydrothermal method. Benefiting from the high electrochemical activity area, good electrical conductivity, superhydrophilic/aerophobic surfaces, and ultrathin nanosheets, MnS-MoS2/LA-Mo exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity and structure stability, delivering a low overpotential of 85 mV in a 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte and 176 mV in a 1 M KOH electrolyte, respectively, at the current density of 10 mA cm–2, exhibiting low charge-transfer resistance and exceptional long-term stability. This work provides a simple method for preparing efficient self-supporting nonprecious metal electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing highly catalytic active but stable MoS2 catalyst for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, requires atomic-level tailoring of the electronic structure, but is greatly challenging. Herein, via precisely growing a double-layer MoS2/graphene hybrid structure encapsulating CoNi nanoalloy (MoS2/(CoNi@G)), we report both significantly enhanced HER activity and stability by the electrons of the CoNi cores traversing through the graphene to the outmost MoS2 layer. It achieves 10 mA cm(-2) at a significantly lower overpotential of 150 mV than that of 262 mV over pristine MoS2 nanosheets, and runs stably for over 10000 cyclic voltammetry cycles. The electron traversing effect efficiently tunes the electronic structures of both edge S sites and in-plane S vacancies, resulting in more appropriate adsorption energy of hydrogen on these active centers. It also induces strong electronic interactions between the MoS2 and CoNi@G, which stabilizes the outmost MoS2 layer and thereby significantly improves its catalytic stability.
Vertically Oriented MoS2 Nanosheets with Vast Exposed Edges for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a typical two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, is a promising candidate for electrochemical water splitting catalysis due to its ultrahigh special area and highly exposed active edge sites. The main challenges restricted the wider application for MoS2-based nanomaterials are the complex preparation process and the high overpotential. Here, we design a novel and facile sealed vessel to synthesize vertical oriented MoS2 nanosheets electrocatalyst with vast exposed edges. Benefiting from the unique vertically-oriented structural and compositional characteristics, the MoS2 nanosheets with 10-20 layers exhibits superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with a small overpotential of 135.2 mV at a current density of 10 mA∙cm-2 and low Tafel slope of 82.5 mV∙dec-1 as well as extraordinary catalytic stability over 5000 cycles. Importantly, the sealed vessel reactor system may open up a versatile and potential synthetic way to construct various morphologies and structure of metal dichalcogenides for high-performance energy storage and conversions devices.

Abstract:As one of the most promising Pt alternatives for cost-effective hydrogen production, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), although has been studied extensively to improve its electrocatalytic activity, suffers from scarce active sites, low conductivity, and lack of interaction with substrates. To this end, we anchor ultradispersed and single-layered MoS2 nanoflakes on graphene sheets via a hybrid intermediate (MoOx-cysteine-graphene oxide), which not only confines the subsequent growth of MoS2 on the graphene surface but also ensures the intimate interaction between Mo species and graphene at the initial stage. Mo-O-C bond and a possible residual MoO3-x layer are proposed to comprise the interface bridging the two inherent incompatible phases, MoS2 and graphene. This strongly coupled structure together with the highly exposed MoS2 morphology accelerates the electron injection from graphene to the active sites of MoS2, and thus the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can achieve an overpotential of ∼275 mV at ∼-740 mA cm-2, and a Pt-like Tafel slope of ∼35 mV dec-1. Our results shed light on the indispensable role of interfacial interaction within semiconducting material-nanocarbon composites and provide a new insight into the actual activity of MoS2 toward the HER.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with the two-dimensional layered structure has been widely studied as an advanced catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Intercalating guest species into the van der Waals gaps of MoS2 has been demonstrated as an effective approach to tune the electronic structure and consequently improve the HER catalytic activity. In this work, by constructing nanostructured MoS2 particles with largely exposed edge sites on the three-dimensional substrate and subsequently conducting Li electrochemical intercalation and exfoliation processes, an ultrahigh HER performance with 200 mA/cm(2) cathodic current density at only 200 mV overpotential is achieved. We propose that both the high surface area nanostructure and the 2H semiconducting to 1T metallic phase transition of MoS2 are responsible for the outstanding catalytic activity. Electrochemical stability test further confirms the long-term operation of the catalyst.

Abstract:Advanced materials for electrocatalytic water splitting are central to renewable energy research. In this work, MoS2 nanosheets supported on porous metallic MoO2 (MoS2/MoO2) were produced by sulfuration treatments of porous and highly conductive MoO2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Porous MoO2 with one-dimensional channel-like structures was prepared by calcination at elevated temperatures using phosphomolybdic acid as the precursor and mesoporous silica (SBA-15) as the template, and the subsequent hydrothermal treatment in the presence of thioacetamide led to the transformation of the top layers to MoS2 forming MoS2/MoO2 composites. Electrochemical studies showed that the obtained composites exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for HER with an onset potential of -104 mV (vs. RHE), a large current density (10 mA cm(-2) at -0.24 V), a small Tafel slope of 76.1 mV dec(-1) and robust electro-chemical durability. The performance might be ascribed to the high electrical conductivity and porous structures of MoO2 with one-dimensional channels of 3 to 4 nm in diameter that allowed for fast charge transport and collection.

Abstract:Maximizing and creating active sites has been a general strategy to increase the performance of a catalyst. Because of the high electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactivity (HER) of ultrafine Mo2C nanocrystals and edges of two-dimensional MoS2, an electrode with a synergistic integration of these two nanomaterials is expected to show a better HER performance. Here we report this hybrid nanostructure of vertically aligned MoS2/Mo2C nanosheets on conductive carbon paper. It was revealed that the original structure of MoS2 nanosheets remains intact after the carburization, but the surfaces are incorporated with either Mo2C nanodomains or a heteroatomic mixture of S and C. The hybrid catalyst exhibits a much lower HER overpotential in comparison to those of the corresponding Mo2C and MoS2 alone. Its high activity is congruent with DFT calculations, which show that multiple S and C coordinated Mo sites with near zero Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption exist. Thus, the low overpotential of this binder-free hybrid catalyst is a result of active sites of Mo-S-C and highly dispersed Mo2C nanodomains on the original edges and basal planes of MoS2. Abstract:Two-dimensional Mo/Mo2C heteronanosheets (Mo/Mo2C-HNS) were successfully prepared via a NaCl template-assisted synthesis route followed by a controllable simultaneous reduction and carbonization of MoO3 nanosheets for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysis under both acidic and alkaline conditions. The Mo species in the atomically thin Mo/Mo2C-HNS not only guarantees the rapid transport of electrons but also optimizes the electronic configuration of beta-Mo2C. Besides, the abundant Mo/beta-Mo2C heterointerfaces in nanodimension afford large numbers of additional heterogeneous catalytic sites. HER electrocatalytic performance with overpotential of merely 89 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA/cm(2) in 0.5 M H2SO4 is therefore achieved. Strikingly, stable chronoamperometric electrolysis for 20 h and also an impressive cycling stability with negligible overpotential decay over 4000 sweeps demonstrate its considerable durability in an acidic environment. These findings highlight the promising potential of Mo/Mo2C-HNS catalyst as an efficient and stable noble metal-free electrocatalyst toward the HER.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has emerged as a promising electrocatalyst for catalyzing protons to hydrogen via the so-called hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In order to enhance the HER activity, tremendous effort has been made to engineer MoS2 catalysts with either more active sites or higher conductivity. However, at present, synergistically structural and electronic modulations for HER still remain challenging. In this work, we demonstrate the successfully synergistic regulations of both structural and electronic benefits by controllable disorder engineering and simultaneous oxygen incorporation in MoS2 catalysts, leading to the dramatically enhanced HER activity. The disordered structure can offer abundant unsaturated sulfur atoms as active sites for HER, while the oxygen incorporation can effectively regulate the electronic structure and further improve the intrinsic conductivity. By means of controllable disorder engineering and oxygen incorporation, an optimized catalyst with a moderate degree of disorder was developed, exhibiting superior activity for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In general, the optimized catalyst exhibits onset overpotential as low as 120 mV, accompanied by extremely large cathodic current density and excellent stability. This work will pave a new pathway for improving the electrocatalytic activity by synergistically structural and electronic modulations.
