Abstract:A high-sensitivity bending sensor based on dual-dip long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) in a single-mode fiber is proposed. The length of the gratings is very short only 7.2 mm. The asymmetric perturbation in fiber is generated during the fabrication, which makes the dual-dip LPFGs show different bending sensing characteristics at opposite directions. Meanwhile, the highest bending sensitivity of -35.91 nm/m- 1 and -20.74 dB/m-1 can be obtained at bending directions of 0 degrees and 180 degrees, respectively. Furthermore, the torsion and temperature sensing characteristics are investigated experimentally. The torsion sensitivities follow sine function showing potential for directional sensing. The temperature sensitivities are 41.9 p.m./degrees C and 45.1 p.m./degrees C are close, which can eliminate the cross-sensitivity to temperature.

Abstract:The curvature- or bend-sensing response of long-period gratings (LPGs) UV inscribed in D-shaped fiber has been investigated experimentally. Strong fiber-orientation dependence of the spectral response when such LPGs are subjected to bending at different directions has been observed and is shown to form the basis for a new class of single-device sensor with vector-sensing capability. Potential applications utilizing the linear response and unique bend-orientation characteristics of the devices are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the first- and fourth-order fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based axial strain sensors are proposed. The FBGs are inscribed in step-index polymer optical fibers (POFs) (TOPAS core and ZEONEX cladding) via the point-by-point (PbP) direct-writing technique. A first-order FBG with a single peak is obtained with a pulse fluence of 7.16 J/cm2, showing a strain sensitivity of 1.17 pm/με. After that, a fourth-order FBG with seven peaks is obtained with a pulse fluence of 1.81 J/cm2 with a strain sensitivity between 1.249 pm/με and 1.296 pm/με. With a higher fluence of 2.41 J/cm2, a second fourth-order FBG with five peaks is obtained, each of which is split into two peaks due to high birefringence (Hi-Bi) of ~5.4 × 10−4. The two split peaks present a strain sensitivity of ~1.44 pm/με and ~1.55 pm/με, respectively. The peak difference corresponding to Hi-Bi presents a strain sensitivity of ~0.11 pm/με and could potentially be used for simultaneous dual-parameter measurement, such as temperature and strain.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a compact bending sensor. The head of the sensor is only 0.8 mm in length, and consists of an abrupt biconical fiber taper formed using a conventional fusion splicer, in which a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is inscribed using a femtosecond laser. The biconical taper incorporating the FBG can couple light from the cladding to the backward-propagating core mode, which realizes an interferometer in reflection-mode. Bending of the structure can be detected from the contrast change of interference fringes. A configuration to measure curvature is investigated to demonstrate the sensing characteristics. The temperature cross-sensitivity of the sensor is studied, and the results demonstrate that it is insensitive to temperature.

Abstract:A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) structure based on an eccentric core fiber (ECF) and a single-mode fiber (SMF) was proposed and experimentally demonstrated for distinguishing the bending effect from the axial strain effect and measuring the pure directional bending. The structure is fabricated by writing a FBG on the fusion splice junction between an ECF and a SMF. The FBG formed on the ECF-SMF junction has two different resonant peaks because of the different refractive indices of the two fibers. The peak relating to the ECF is sensitive to both directional bending and axial strain, while the peak corresponding to the SMF is only sensitive to strain. By using the unique FBG structure, one can directly know whether a bending is accompanied by an axial strain, and can obtain both the direction and curvature of the bending. Experimental results show that the bending sensitivities of the FBG in the ECF part are 49.3 and 50.3 ${\rm{pm}}/{{\rm{m}}^{ - 1}}$ at directions of 0 and 180, respectively, and the strain sensitivities of the FBG in the ECF and SMF are 0.74 and 0.70 pm/, respectively.

Abstract:A novel bend-insensitive long-period fiber grating (LPFG) sensor written using focused CO2 laser pulses is demonstrated, for the first time, to our knowledge. It is found that the central wavelength shift of such a LPFG is only −0.018nm even for a curvature of 1.1m−1 at the most bend-insensitive position of the LPFG. Experimental results show that the bend sensitivity of the central wavelength of the LPFG has a periodic distribution along its circular directions. Such a bend-insensitive sensor could be used to solve the problem of cross-sensitivity between bend and other measurands, such as temperature, strain or refractive index, which is an unsolved problem for LPFG sensors in practice. In addition, the bend sensitivity of the LPFG can be adjusted by selecting its circular positions.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a highly sensitive inline fiber curvature sensor based on an eccentric core fiber (ECF) and off-axis air cavity Fabry-Pérot interferometer (OACFPI). This ECF-based bending sensor is fabricated by fusion-splicing a section of ECF between a single-mode fiber and an off-axis air cavity fiber. Due to the location of the core in the ECF, a bend applied to the ECF-based OACFPI leads to elongation or shortening of the optical path length in the air cavity, which makes the system suitable for bending measurement. To analyze bending characteristics, three ECFs with different eccentric core locations are investigated separately. In addition, a swept source is employed for measurement. The experimental results demonstrate that, the bending sensitivities of the sensors at the two opposite most-sensitive directions are 0.241 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 1), 0.131 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 2), and 0.0807 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathrm {\mathbf {-1 }}}$ (sensor 3), and −0.245 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 1), −0.156 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 2), and −0.077 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 3). The temperature sensitivities of the sensors are 0.84 pm/°C, 0.92 pm/°C, and 0.94 pm/°C, respectively. The proposed sensors are compact and versatile, and are expected to have potential applications in biomedical sensing.

Abstract:In this article, it is reported on a multiparameter sensor for measuring bending, torsion, and temperature. The sensor is formed from long-period gratings (LPGs) induced in a linearly arranged three-core fiber (TCF) using the electric arc-discharge technique. This sensor could realize the simultaneous measurement for curvature magnitudes and discriminate bending direction because of the linearly distributed fiber cores of TCF and high polarization-dependent loss (PDL) of TCF-LPGs. The bending reactions in various directions exhibit a high degree of linearity in the curvature region of 0.249-0.8731 m(-1) . The obtained bending sensitivities are noticeably distinct and adhere to sine function relationship with the bending direction. At the direction of 0 degrees, the bending sensitivities of dual resonances in TCF-LPGs reach the highest value of -7.58 and -8.83 nm/ m(-1) , respectively, and the measured temperature sensitivities are 0.023 and 0.107 nm/degrees C, respectively. Considering dual resonances response different coefficients to different parameters, the simultaneous measurement of temperature and bending could be achieved. Moreover, the torsional characteristics of the TCF-LPGs adhere to sine function as well, which shows potential for directional torsion sensing. The suggested TCF-LPGs offer great deal of promise in the area of multiparameter sensing measurement.

Abstract:We report the implementation of vector bending sensors using long-period gratings (LPGs) UV-inscribed in flat-clad, four-core and D-shaped fibres. Our experiments reveal a strong fibre-orientation dependence of the spectral response when such LPGs are subjected to dynamic bending, which provided an opportunity to realize curvature measurement with direction recognition.
High-sensitivity stress sensor based on Bragg grating in BDK-doped photosensitive polymer optical fiber

Abstract:Bragg grating in a single-mode photosensitive polymer optical fiber (POF) with benzil dimethyl ketal (BDK)-doped in core has been inscribed through the Sagnac ring interference method. The Bragg wavelength of grating is about 1570nm. The stress and strain response of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) has been studied respectively. By fitting the experimental result, the strain sensitivity of FBG in POF has been found to be almost same to that of conventional silica fiber Bragg gratings. However, the stress sensitivity of FBG in POF is measured to be 421pm/MPa, which is 28 times higher than FBG in silica fiber. And such high stress sensitivity makes Bragg grating in a single-mode BDK-doped POF appear to be very attractive for constructing stress sensor with high resolution.

Abstract:In this letter, a highly sensitive bending sensor based on an embedded multimode D-shaped long period fiber grating (EMD-LPFG) is proposed. The novel sensor is applied to carry out vector bending measurement. The proposed LPFG is fabricated by polishing on the prepared structure which is formed by periodically splicing between single mode fiber (SMF) and multimode fiber (MMF). Since the cross section of the embedded MMF is D-shaped, we named it EMD-LPFG. Due to the asymmetric modulation of the refractive index on the fiber by the CO2 laser, the sensor has the ability to distinguish the bending directions, and the MMFs provide higher bending response. The experimental transmission spectrum can match the simulation results well. The experimental results show that the average bending sensitivities in three orthogonal directions are 70.21 nm/m-1 (0°), 9.75 nm/m-1 (90°), -12.04 nm/m-1 (180°) and 9.98 nm/m-1 (270°), respectively. Meanwhile, the temperature sensitivity is 30 pm/°C in the range of 25 °C to 75 °C. According to the ultra-compact structure with the total length of 2.5 mm, high bending sensitivity and ability to distinguish the bending direction, the novel sensor has potential in bending measurement.

Abstract:In the last decade, tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) have received a lot of research attention due to their unique ability for detection of bending and surrounding refractive index (SRI). Meanwhile, fabrication of TFBGs normally requires fiber pre-hydrogenation and expensive laser systems, such as excimer laser at 193 nm or femtosecond lasers. In this work, we report the first TFBG inscriptions in Boron co-doping fibers (PS1250/1500, FIBERCORE) using low cost 266 nm solid state pulsed laser and scanning phase mask lithography technique. By using this inscription set-up, gratings with tilt angles from 2° to 10° are fabricated. Influences (pulse repetition rate and scanning speed) on the grating quality and spectral performances are discussed. Furthermore, evolution of spectra during the inscription of the 10° TFBG is illustrated showing uniform growths of both the core and cladding modes. In addition to the TFBG fabrication, temperature, bending and SRI measurement are conducted. Because the core mode is restricted to propagate in the fiber core, TFBGs could automatically provide temperature compensation. The ease of TFBG fabrication and the capability of intrinsic temperature self-compensation pave the way to their potentially promising applications in curvature and refractometric measurement.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a novel bamboo-shaped interference sensor based on multistage photonic-band gap microstructured fiber (PBG-MF) and single-mode fiber (SMF) to build the cascaded Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI). Due to the honeycomb space inside the PBG-MF, a higher extinction ratio (ER) is obtained in the reflection spectrum of the interferometer, which is conducive to improving the detection limit (DL) and resolution of the sensor. The bending direction can be identified by the structure proposed in this letter. Maximum curvature sensitivity is 991 pm/m -1 in the convex direction. Maximum curvature sensitivity is -1118 pm/m -1 in the concave direction. The sensor has the advantages of small size, high sensitivity, and high package stability. It is particularly suitable for ultra-short distance curvature sensing, such as the joints of the human body.

Abstract:A novel long period fiber-grating (LPFG) sensor that can not only measure curvature directly, but also determine every bend-direction within the circular range of 0/spl deg/-360/spl deg/, is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Such a bend-sensor consists of one LPFG induced by a UV laser and two LPFGs induced by high-frequency CO/sub 2/ laser pulses. The curvature is measured by the UV laser-induced LPFG whose bend-sensitivity is independent of the bend-directions, and the bend-direction is determined by the CO/sub 2/ laser-induced LPFGs whose bend-sensitivities depend strongly on the curved directions. In addition, the unique bend-characteristics of LPFGs induced by high-frequency CO/sub 2/ laser pulses are demonstrated.

Abstract:A directionally discriminable curvature sensor based on a chirped fiber Bragg grating Fabry–Perot interferometer (CFBG-FPI) is proposed and demonstrated by staggering two CFBGs in parallel in the fiber core with femtosecond laser point-by-point technology. The experimental results show that the light intensity of the interference dip tends to become stronger and weaker in two opposite bending directions, respectively, with a maximum sensitivity of 4.93 dB/m−1. This sensor has a temperature sensitivity of 2.31 × 10−4 dB/°C resulting in a cross-sensitivity as low as approximately 4.7 × 10−5 m−1/°C. The sensor is simple to manufacture, compact, and can be cascaded by multiple sensors to achieve multi-point detection, which is expected to play an important application in structural health detection.

Abstract:We propose a bend-insensitive distributed Brillouin optical fiber sensing by using a singlemode-multimode-singlemode optical fiber structure for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The sensing fiber is a graded-index multimode fiber (GI-MMF) sandwiched by two standard single-mode fibers (SMFs) with centrally alignment splicing at the interface between GI-MMF and SMF to excite the fundamental mode only in GI-MMF. The sensing system can resist a minimal bend radius of 1.25mm while maintaining the measurement performance, with which the measured coefficient of strain is 421.6MHz/%. We also demonstrate that the higher-order modes exciting in GI-MMF can be easily influenced by bending, so that the fundamental mode exciting is essential for bend-insensitive distributed sensing.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensor for curvature measurements. Two gratings are inscribed through the protective coating in a specialty optical fiber using focused femtosecond laser pulses and point-by-point direct writing technology. One grating is inscribed on the central core adjacent to an air channel, while the other is inscribed on the eccentric core. The bending characteristics of the two-core fiber strongly depend on the bending direction due to the asymmetry of the fiber cores. A bending sensitivity of 58 pm/m−1 is achieved by the FBG in the eccentric fiber core over the curvature range of 0–50 m−1. Temperature and humidity cross-sensitivity could be significantly reduced by analyzing the differences in peak shifts between the two gratings. The sensor features a large sensing range and good robustness due to the presence of its protective buffer coating, which makes it a good candidate for curvature sensing in engineering fields.
