Abstract:Let mu be a probability distribution on the braid group B-n with n >= 3 strands. We observe that for a random walk omega(n,k) of length k on B-n, the probability that the closure (omega(n,k)) over cap is a hyperbolic link in S-3 converges to 1 as k tends to infinity. Moreover, under a mild assumption on mu, we prove the probability that the closure (omega(n,k)) over cap is a hyperbolic knot which has no nontrivial exceptional surgeries is larger than zero for k large enough. The proofs combine several recent deep results.

Abstract:We suggest a new random model for links based on meander diagrams and graphs. We then prove that trivial links appear with vanishing probability in this model, no link $L$ is obtained with probability 1, and there is a lower bound for the number of non-isotopic knots obtained for a fixed number of crossings. A random meander diagram is obtained through matching pairs of parentheses, a well-studied problem in combinatorics. Hence tools from combinatorics can be used to investigate properties of random links in this model, and, moreover, of the respective 3-manifolds that are link complements in 3-sphere. We use this for exploring geometric properties of a link complement. Specifically, we give expected twist number of a link diagram and use it to bound expected hyperbolic and simplicial volume of random links. The tools from combinatorics that we use include Catalan and Narayana numbers, and Zeilberger's algorithm.

Abstract:For any pair of integers $m$ and $n$ such that $3<m<n$, we provide an infinite family of links, where each link in the family has a locally minimal $n$-bridge position and a globally minimal $m$-bridge position. We accomplish this by applying the criterion of Takao et al. The $n$-bridge position is interesting because the corresponding bridge sphere is unperturbed, so it must be perturbed at least once before it can be de-perturbed to attain a globally minimal $m$-bridge sphere.

We present a rescaling of model parameters that casts the random hyperbolic graph model of any dimension to a unified mathematical framework, leaving the degree distribution invariant with respect to the dimension. Unlike the degree distribution, clustering does depend on the dimension, decreasing to 0 at d→∞ . Abstract:We show that there are hyperbolic tunnel-number one knots with arbitrarily high bridge number and that "most" tunnel-number one knots are not one-bridge with respect to an unknotted torus. The proof relies on a connection between bridge number and a certain distance in the curve complex of a genus-two surface.

Abstract:A bridge in a graph is an edge whose removal disconnects the graph and increases the number of connected components. We calculate the fraction of bridges in a wide range of real-world networks and their randomized counterparts. We find that real networks typically have more bridges than their completely randomized counterparts, but they have a fraction of bridges that is very similar to their degree-preserving randomizations. We define an edge centrality measure, called bridgeness, to quantify the importance of a bridge in damaging a network. We find that certain real networks have a very large average and variance of bridgeness compared to their degree-preserving randomizations and other real networks. Finally, we offer an analytical framework to calculate the bridge fraction and the average and variance of bridgeness for uncorrelated random networks with arbitrary degree distributions.

Tightness for interlacing geometric random walk bridges

Abstract:We investigate a class of line ensembles whose local structure is described by independent geometric random walk bridges, which have been conditioned to interlace with each other. The latter arise naturally in the context Schur processes, including their versions in a half-space and a finite interval with free or periodic boundary conditions. We show that under one-point tightness of the curves, these line ensembles are tight and any subsequential limit satisfies the Brownian Gibbs property. As an application of our tightness results, we show that sequences of spiked Schur processes, that were recently considered in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2408.08445" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2408.08445">arXiv:2408.08445</a>, converge uniformly over compact sets to the Airy wanderer line ensembles.

The Impact of Pinning Points on Memorylessness in Lévy Random Bridges

Abstract:Random Bridges have gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential applications in various areas, particularly in information-based asset pricing models. This paper aims to explore the potential influence of the pinning point's distribution on the memorylessness and stochastic dynamics of the bridge process. We introduce Lévy bridges with random length and random pinning points and analyze their Markov property. Our study demonstrates that the Markov property of Lévy bridges depends on the nature of the distribution of their pinning points. The law of any random variables can be decomposed into singular continuous, discrete, and absolutely continuous parts with respect to the Lebesgue measure (Lebesgue's decomposition theorem). We show that the Markov property holds when the pinning points' law does not have an absolutely continuous part. Conversely, the Lévy bridge fails to exhibit Markovian behavior when the pinning point has an absolutely continuous part.

Abstract:Given a connected graph G, we take, as usual, the distance xy between any two vertices x, y of G to be the length of some geodesic between x and y. The graph G is said to be δ-hyperbolic, for some δ ≥ 0, if for all vertices x, y, u, v in G the inequality xy + uv ≤ max{xu + yv, xv + yu} + δ holds, and G is bridged if it contains no finite isometric cycles of length four or more. In this paper, we will show that a finite connected bridged graph is 1-hyperbolic if and only if it does not contain any of a list of six graphs as an isometric subgraph.

Abstract:We consider random walk on the structure given by a random hypergraph in the regime where there is a unique giant component. We give the asymptotics for hitting times, cover times, and commute times and show that the results obtained for random walk on random graphs are universal.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a compact orientable surface with nonempty boundary other than a disk. Let $L$ be a link in $F \times I$ with a connected weakly prime cellular alternating projection to $F$. We provide simple conditions that determine exactly when $(F \times I) \setminus N(L)$ is hyperbolic. We also consider suitable embeddings of $F \times I$ in an ambient manifold $Y$ with boundary and provide conditions on links $L \subset F \times I$ which guarantee tg-hyperbolicity of $Y \setminus N(L)$. These results provide many examples of hyperbolic links in handlebodies and fiber bundles. It also provides many examples of staked links that are hyperbolic.

Abstract:Consider a random walk in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that starts at the origin and whose increment distribution assigns zero probability to any affine hyperplane. We solve Sylvester's problem for these random walks by showing that the probability that the first $d+2$ steps of the walk are in convex position is equal to $1-\frac{2}{(d+1)!}$. The analogous result also holds for random bridges of length $d+2$, so long as the joint increment distribution is exchangeable.

Abstract:Twisted hypercubes are generalizations of the Boolean hypercube, obtained by iteratively connecting two instances of a graph by a uniformly random perfect matching. Dudek et al. showed that when the two instances are independent, these graphs have optimal diameter. We study twisted hypercubes in the setting where the instances can have general dependence, and also in the particular case where they are identical. We show that the resultant graph shares properties with random regular graphs, including small diameter, large vertex expansion, a semicircle law for its eigenvalues and no non‐trivial automorphisms. However, in contrast to random regular graphs, twisted hypercubes allow for short routing schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel model for random hypergraphs based on weighted random connection models. In accordance with the standard theory for hypergraphs, this model is constructed from a bipartite graph. In our stochastic model, both vertex sets of this bipartite graph form marked Poisson point processes and the connection radius is inversely proportional to a product of suitable powers of the marks. Hence, our model is a common generalization of weighted random connection models and AB random geometric graphs. For this hypergraph model, we investigate the limit theory of a variety of graph-theoretic and topological characteristics such as higher-order degree distribution, Betti numbers of the associated Dowker complex as well as simplex counts. In particular, for the latter quantity we identify regimes of convergence to normal and to stable distribution depending on the heavy-tailedness of the weight distribution. We conclude our investigation by a simulation study and an application to the collaboration network extracted from the arXiv dataset.

Abstract:The random hyperbolic graph, introduced in 2010 by Krioukov, Papadopoulos, Kitsak, Vahdat and Boguñá, is a graph model suitable for modelling a large class of real-world networks, known as complex networks. Gugelmann, Panagiotou and Peter proved that for curvature parameter $\alpha > 1/2$, the degree sequence of the random hyperbolic graph follows a power-law distribution with controllable exponent up to the maximum degree. To achieve this, they showed, among other results, that with high probability, the maximum degree is $n^{\frac{1}{2\alpha} + o(1)}$, where $n$ is the number of nodes. In this paper, we refine this estimate of the maximum degree, and we extend it to the case $\alpha \leq 1/2$: we first show that, with high probability, the node with the maximum degree is eventually the one that is the closest to the origin of the underlying hyperbolic space. From this, we get the convergence in distribution of the renormalised maximum degree. Except for the critical case $\alpha = 1/2$, the limit distribution belongs to the extreme value distribution family (Weibull distribution in the case $\alpha < 1/2$ and Fréchet distribution in the case $\alpha > 1/2$).

Abstract:In this paper we study the hyperbolicity properties of a class of random groups arising as graph products associated to random graphs. Recall, that the construction of a graph product is a generalization of the constructions of right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups. We adopt the Erdos - Renyi model of a random graph and find precise threshold functions for the hyperbolicity (or relative hyperbolicity). We aslo study automorphism groups of right-angled Artin groups associated to random graphs. We show that with probability tending to one as $n\to \infty$, random right-angled Artin groups have finite outer automorphism groups, assuming that the probability parameter $p$ is constant and satisfies $0.2929 <p<1$.
