Abstract:We prove a vanishing theorem for the fundamental group of a compact submanifold in a space form, and then present a refined version of Ejiri's rigidity theorem for minimal submanifolds in a sphere. Inspired by the refined Ejiri theorem, we verify a new differentiable sphere theorem for compact submanifolds in space forms. We also show that our differentiable sphere theorem is sharp. We emphasize that our method of Ricci flow in the proof of the sphere theorem seems useful in the study of curvature and topology. Also, we obtain a differentiable pinching theorem for compact submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold.

Abstract:We investigate topological and differentiable structures of submanifolds under extrinsic restrictions. We first obtain a topological sphere theorem for compact submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold. Secondly, we prove an optimal differentiable sphere theorem for 4-dimensional complete submanifolds in a space form, which provides a partial solution of the smooth Poincare conjecture. Finally, we prove some new differentiable sphere theorems for n-dimensional submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold.

Abstract:We investigate the differentiable pinching problem for compact immersed submanifolds of positive k-th Ricci curvature, and prove that if M n is simply connected and the k-th Ricci curvature of M n is bounded below by a quantity involving the mean curvature of M n and the curvature of the ambient manifold, then M n is diffeomorphic to the standard sphere ${\mathbb{S}^n}$. For the case where the ambient manifold is a space form with nonnegative constant curvature, we prove a differentiable sphere theorem without the assumption that the submanifold M n is simply connected. Motivated by a geometric rigidity theorem due to S. T. Yau and U. Simon, we prove a topological rigidity theorem for submanifolds in a space form.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the compact minimal submanifold M-n(n >= 3) in the complex projective space CPn+p/2 (1). Denote by S the square norm of the second fundamental form. Set, (S) over tilde = S + 1/2 vertical bar t vertical bar(2) and epsilon = inf(M)vertical bar P vertical bar(2) , where P, t are the tensors defined in (2.1) below. We first, prove such that if parallel to S parallel to(n/2) < alpha 1 (n, epsilon) for epsilon > 0, then M is a totally geodesic submanifold CPn/2. Moreover, we prove if parallel to(S) over tilde parallel to(n/2) < alpha 3(n), where alpha 3(n) is an explicit positive constant depending only on n, then M is a totally geodesic submanifold CPn/2. We also prove other global pinching theorems for minimal submanifolds in the complex projective space.

Abstract:Some new differentiable sphere theorems are obtained via the Ricci flow and stable currents. We prove that if $M^n$ is a compact manifold whose normalized scalar curvature and sectional curvature satisfy the pointwise pinching condition $R_0>\sigma_{n}K_{\max}$, where $\sigma_n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. This gives a partial answer to Yau's conjecture on pinching theorem. Moreover, we prove that if $M^n(n\geq3)$ is a compact manifold whose $(n-2)$-th Ricci curvature and normalized scalar curvature satisfy the pointwise condition $Ric^{(n-2)}_{\min}>\tau_n(n-2)R_0,$ where $\tau_n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. We then extend the sphere theorems above to submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold. Finally we give a classification of submanifolds with weakly pinched curvatures, which improves the differentiable pinching theorems due to Andrews, Baker and the authors.

Abstract:Let M be an n (>= 7)-dimensional complete submanifold with parallel mean curvature in the hyperbolic space Hn+p, whose mean curvature satisfies H-2-1 <= 0. Denote by angstrom and B-R(q) the trace free second fundamental form of M and the geodesic ball of radius R centered at q is an element of M, respectively. We prove that if lim(R ->infinity) sup integral(vertical bar angstrom vertical bar 2dM)(BR(q))/R-2 and if (integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n) dM)(2/n) + 2n(n-2)/3 root n(n-1) H(integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n/2)dM)(2/n) <= C(n), then M is congruent to an n-dimensional hyperbolic space or the Euclidean space R-n. Abstract:In this paper, we investigate rigidity of geometric and differentiable structures of complete submanifolds via an extrinsic geometrical quantity tau(x) defined by the second fundamental form. We verify a geometric rigidity theorem for complete submanifolds with parallel mean curvature in a unit sphere Sn+P. Inspired by the rigidity theorem, we prove a differentiable sphere theorem for complete submanifolds in Sn+p. New Sphere Theorems under Curvature Operator of the Second Kind

Abstract:We investigate Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g)$ whose curvature operator of the second kind $\mathring{R}$ satisfies the condition \begin{equation*} \alpha^{-1} (\lambda_1 +\cdots +\lambda_{\alpha}) > - \theta \bar{\lambda}, \end{equation*} where $\lambda_1 \leq \cdots \leq \lambda_{(n-1)(n+2)/2}$ are the eigenvalues of $\mathring{R}$, $\bar{\lambda}$ is their average, and $\theta > -1$. Under such conditions with optimal $\theta$ depending on $n$ and $\alpha$, we prove two differentiable sphere theorems in dimensions three and four, a homological sphere theorem in higher dimensions, and a curvature characterization of Kähler space forms. These results generalize recent works corresponding to $\theta =0$ of Cao-Gursky-Tran, Nienhaus-Petersen-Wink, and the author. Moreover, examples are provided to demonstrate the sharpness of all results.

Abstract:By constructing a holomorphic cubic form for Lagrangian surfaces with nonzero constant length mean curvature vector in a 2-dimensional complex space form $\tilde M$(4c), we characterize the Lagrangian pesudosphere as the only branched Lagrangian immersion of a sphere in $\tilde M$(4c) with nonzero constant length mean curvature vector. When c = 0, our result reduces to Castro-Urbano’s result in [1].

Abstract:We extend the vanishing and sphere theorems due to Lawson, Simons, Xin, Shiohama and Xu. By using the techniques of calculus of variations in the geometric measure theory, we prove the vanishing theorem for homology groups of submanifolds in the hyperbolic space H-n(c) with negative constant curvature c. Moreover, we obtain a topological sphere theorem for certain complete submanifolds in H-n(c).

Abstract: Let $F^{n+p}(c)$ be an $(n+p)$-dimensional simply connected space form with nonnegative constant curvature $c$. We prove that if $M^n(n\geq4)$ is a compact submanifold in $F^{n+p}(c)$, and if $Ric_M>(n-2)(c+H^2),$ where $H$ is the mean curvature of $M$, then $M$ is homeomorphic to a sphere. We also show that the pinching condition above is sharp. Moreover, we obtain a new differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds with positive Ricci curvature.

Abstract:The n-dimensional complex hyperquadric is a compact complex algebraic hypersurface defined by the quadratic equation in the (n+1)-dimensional complex projective space, which is isometric to the real Grassmannmanifold of oriented 2-planes and is a compact Hermitian symmetric space of rank 2. In this paper, we study geometry of compact Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics from the viewpoint of the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres. From this viewpoint we provide a classification theorem of compact homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics by using the moment map technique. Moreover we determine the Hamiltonian stability of compact minimal Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in complex hyperquadrics which are obtained as Gauss images of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with g(= 1, 2, 3) distinct principal curvatures.

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional compact submanifold in the simply connected space form Fn+p(c) with c+H-2 > 0. We verify that if the sectional curvature of M satisfies K-M > n-2/n+2c + n(2)H(2)/8(n+2), then M is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. Moreover, we show that if M is an oriented compact submanifold in Fn+p(c) with c >= 0, and if n not equal 3, 5, K-M > n-2/n+2c +n(2)H(2)/8(n+2), then M is diffeomorphic to the standard n-sphere. It should be emphasized that our results are optimal for n = 4.

Abstract:We give a complete classification of Lagrangian immersions of homogeneous 3-manifolds (the Berger spheres, the Heisenberg group Nil3, the universal covering of the Lie group PSL(2,R) and the Lie group Sol3) in 3-dimensional complex space forms.
