Abstract:We study the entanglement of unitary operators on d(1) x d(2) quantum systems. This quantity is closely related to the entangling power of the associated quantum evolutions. The entanglement of a class of unitary operators is quantified by the concept of concurrence.

Abstract:We establish the entangling power of a unitary operator on a general finite-dimensional bipartite quantum system with and without ancillas, and give relations between the entangling power based on the von Neumann entropy and the entangling power based on the linear entropy. Significantly, we demonstrate that the entangling power of a general controlled unitary operator acting on two equal-dimensional qudits is proportional to the corresponding operator entanglement if linear entropy is adopted as the quantity representing the degree of entanglement. We discuss the entangling power and operator entanglement of three representative quantum gates on qudits: the SUM, double SUM, and SWAP gates.

Abstract:In quantum information and quantum computation, a bipartite system provides a basic few-body framework for investigating significant properties of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. A Hamiltonian model for a bipartite system is introduced to analyze the important role of interaction between bipartite subsystems in quantum non-equilibrium thermodynamics. We illustrate discrimination between such quantum thermodynamics and classical few-body non-equilibrium thermodynamics. By proposing a detailed balance condition of the bipartite system, we generally investigate the properties of the entropy and heat of our model, as well as the relation between them.

Abstract:In this paper, von Neumann entropy is used to study three kinds of bipartite qutrit model, which represent SU(3) strongly correlated model, three-level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, and spin-1 model. The relation between the ground-state entanglement and the quantum phase transition in those models is exhibited and the connection between the entanglement extremes and the symmetries is also discussed.

Abstract:Quantifying the entanglement generation of a multipartite unitary operation is a key problem in quantum information processing. We introduce the definition of multipartite entangling, assisted entangling, and disentangling power, which is a natural generalization of the bipartite ones. We show that they are assumed at a specified quantum state. We analytically derive the entangling power of Schmidt-rank-two multi-qubit unitary operations by the minimal convex sum of modulo-one complex numbers. Besides we show the necessary and sufficient condition that the assisted entangling power of Schmidt-rank-two unitary operations reaches the maximum. We further investigate the widely-used multi-qubit gates, for example, the entangling and assisted entangling power of the $n$-qubit Toffoli gate is one ebit. The entangling power of the three-qubit Fredkin gate is two ebits, and that of the four-qubit Fredkin gate is in two to $\log_25$ ebits.

Abstract:The dynamics of the quantum entanglement is a fundamental characteristic for various quantum systems. Since the computable entanglement measure for higher dimensional quantum states itself is absent, the dynamics of the entanglement expressed in an operational method will be of interest. We study the dynamics of tau, an analytical lower bound of squared concurrence, of a bipartite d circle times d quantum state when one party goes through an arbitrary noisy channel. For a pure input state, the range of tau is obtained explicitly. For a mixed input state, an upper bound of tau is found. Interestingly, the tangle tau('), as an upper bound of squared concurrence, also has a similar dynamical property. Our results are similar to that of Konrad and can help the estimation of high-dimension bipartite entanglement in experiments.
Operator Space Entangling Power of Quantum Dynamics and Local Operator Entanglement Growth in Dual-Unitary Circuits

Abstract:Operator entanglement is a well-established measure of operator complexity across a system bipartition. In this work, we introduce a measure for the ability of a unitary channel to generate operator entanglement, representing an operator-level generalization of the state-space entangling power. This operator space entangling power is demonstrated to be linked to the scrambling properties of the unitary channel via the recently introduced concept of mutual averaged non-commutativity of quantum operator algebras. An upper bound for the operator space entangling power is identified, corresponding to unitary channels with scrambling properties akin to those of typical unitaries. Additionally, for Hamiltonian dynamics, we find that the short-time growth rate of the operator space entangling power matches the Gaussian scrambling rate of the bipartite out-of-time-order-correlator, establishing a direct link between information scrambling and operator entanglement generation for short time scales. Finally, we examine the average growth of local operator entanglement across a symmetric bipartition of a spin-chain. For dual-unitary circuits, a combination of analytical and numerical investigations demonstrates that the average growth of local operator entanglement exhibits two distinct regimes in relation to the operator space entangling power of the building-block gate.

Abstract:Based on the relative entropy, we give a unified characterization of quantum correlations for nonlocality, steerability, discord and entanglement for any bipartite quantum states. For two-qubit states we show that the quantities obtained from quantifying nonlocality, steerability, entanglement and discord have strictly monotonic relationship. As for examples, the Bell diagonal states are studied in detail.

Abstract:We study bipartite unitary operators which stay invariant under the local actions of diagonal unitary and orthogonal groups. We investigate structural properties of these operators, arguing that the diagonal symmetry makes them suitable for analytical study. As a first application, we construct large new families of dual unitary gates in arbitrary finite dimensions, which are important toy models for entanglement spreading in quantum circuits. We then analyze the non-local nature of these invariant operators, both in discrete (operator Schmidt rank) and continuous (entangling power) settings. Our scrutiny reveals that these operators can be used to simulate any bipartite unitary gate via stochastic local operations and classical communication. Furthermore, we establish a one-to-one connection between the set of local diagonal unitary invariant dual unitary operators with maximum entangling power and the set of complex Hadamard matrices. Finally, we discuss distinguishability of unitary operators in the setting of the stated diagonal symmetry.
Quantifying the unextendibility of entanglement

Abstract:Entanglement is a striking feature of quantum mechanics, and it has a key property called unextendibility. In this paper, we present a framework for quantifying and investigating the unextendibility of general bipartite quantum states. First, we define the unextendible entanglement, a family of entanglement measures based on the concept of a state-dependent set of free states. The intuition behind these measures is that the more entangled a bipartite state is, the less entangled each of its individual systems is with a third party. Second, we demonstrate that the unextendible entanglement is an entanglement monotone under two-extendible quantum operations, including local operations and one-way classical communication as a special case. Normalization and faithfulness are two other desirable properties of unextendible entanglement, which we establish here. We further show that the unextendible entanglement provides efficiently computable benchmarks for the rate of exact entanglement or secret key distillation, as well as the overhead of probabilistic entanglement or secret key distillation.

Entanglement Dynamics of two Non-Hermitian Qubits

Abstract:The evolution of entanglement in a non-Hermitian quantum system may behave differently compared to its Hermitian counterpart. In this paper, we investigate the entanglement dynamics of two coupled and driven non-Hermitian qubits. Through calculating the concurrence of the system, we find that the evolution of the bipartite entanglement manifests two distinct patterns in the parameter space. In the low non-Hermiticity regime, the concurrence oscillates significantly, while in the opposite regime the same quantity would trend to a stable value. We attribute this phenomenon to parity-time ($ \mathcal{PT}$) symmetry phase transition. In addition, we have also studied the effect of decoherence on the entanglement dynamics. Our research provides a method to stabilize entanglement by exploiting non-Hermiticity.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement and quantum entropy are crucial concepts in the study of multipartite quantum systems. In this work, we show how the notion of concurrence vector, re-expressed in a particularly useful form, provides new insights and computational tools for the analysis of both. In particular, using this approach for a general multipartite pure state, one can easily prove known relations in an easy way and to build up new relations between the concurrences associated with the different bipartitions. The approach is also useful to derive sufficient conditions for genuine entanglement in generic multipartite systems that are computable in polynomial time. From an entropy-of-entanglement perspective, the approach is powerful to prove properties of the Tsallis-2 entropy, such as the subadditivity, and to derive new ones, e.g., a modified version of the strong subadditivity which is always fulfilled; thanks to the purification theorem these results hold for any multipartite state, whether pure or mixed.

Abstract:Local unitary equivalence is an important ingredient for quantifying and classifying entanglement. Verifying whether or not two quantum states are local unitary equivalent is a crucial problem, where only the case of multipartite pure states is solved. For mixed states, however, the verification of local unitary equivalence is still a challenging problem. In this paper, based on the coefficient matrices of generalized Bloch representations of quantum states, we find a variety of local unitary invariants for arbitrary-dimensional bipartite quantum states. These invariants are operational and can be used as necessary conditions for verifying the local unitary equivalence of two quantum states. Furthermore, we extend the construction to the arbitrary-dimensional multipartite case. We finally apply these invariants to estimate concurrence, a vital entanglement measure, showing the practicability of local unitary invariants in characterizing entanglement.

Abstract:For a multipartite system, we sort out all possible entanglements, each of which is among a set of subsystems. Each entanglement can be measured by a generalized relative entropy of entanglement, which is conserved on average under reversible local operations and classical communication (LOCC) defined for all the parties. Then we derive a series of inequalities of different entanglements that have to be satisfied by any pure state which can be generated by reversible LOCC from the set of all GHZ-like states.

Abstract:Local unitary operations allow for a unifying approach to the quantification of quantum correlations among the constituents of a bipartite quantum system. For pure states, the distance between a given state and its image under least-perturbing local unitary operations is a bona fide measure of quantum entanglement, the so-called entanglement of response, which can be extended to mixed states via the convex roof construction. On the other hand, when defined directly on mixed states perturbed by local unitary operations, such a distance turns out to be a bona fide measure of quantum correlations, the so-called discord of response. Exploiting this unified framework, we perform a detailed comparison between two-body entanglement and two-body quantum discord in infinite XY quantum spin chains both in symmetry-preserving and symmetry-breaking ground states as well as in thermal states at finite temperature. The results of the investigation show that in symmetry-preserving ground states the two-point quantum discord dominates over the two-point entanglement, while in symmetrybreaking ground states the two-point quantum discord is strongly suppressed and the two-point entanglement is essentially unchanged. In thermal states, for certain regimes of Hamiltonian parameters, we show that the pairwise quantum discord and the pairwise entanglement can increase with increasing thermal fluctuations.

Abstract:We consider dual unitary operators and their multi-leg generalizations that have appeared at various places in the literature. These objects can be related to multi-party quantum states with special entanglement patterns: the sites are arranged in a spatially symmetric pattern and the states have maximal entanglement for all bipartitions that follow from the reflection symmetries of the given geometry. We consider those cases where the state itself is invariant with respect to the geometrical symmetry group. The simplest examples are those dual unitary operators which are also self dual and reflection invariant, but we also consider the generalizations in the hexagonal, cubic, and octahedral geometries. We provide a number of constructions and concrete examples for these objects for various local dimensions. All of our examples can be used to build quantum cellular automata in 1+1 or 2+1 dimensions, with multiple equivalent choices for the “direction of time”.
