Abstract:The well-known Schmidt decomposition, or equivalently, the complex singular value decomposition, states that a pure quantum state of a bipartite system can always be brought into a "diagonal" form using local unitary transformations. In this work we consider a finite-dimensional closed bipartite system with fast local unitary control. In this setting one can define a reduced control system on the singular values of the state which is equivalent to the original control system. We explicitly describe this reduced control system and prove equivalence to the original system. Moreover, using the reduced control system, we prove that the original system is controllable and stabilizable and we deduce quantum speed limits. We also treat the fermionic and bosonic cases in parallel, which are related to the Autonne-Takagi and Hua factorization respectively.

Abstract:We study bipartite unitary operators which stay invariant under the local actions of diagonal unitary and orthogonal groups. We investigate structural properties of these operators, arguing that the diagonal symmetry makes them suitable for analytical study. As a first application, we construct large new families of dual unitary gates in arbitrary finite dimensions, which are important toy models for entanglement spreading in quantum circuits. We then analyze the non-local nature of these invariant operators, both in discrete (operator Schmidt rank) and continuous (entangling power) settings. Our scrutiny reveals that these operators can be used to simulate any bipartite unitary gate via stochastic local operations and classical communication. Furthermore, we establish a one-to-one connection between the set of local diagonal unitary invariant dual unitary operators with maximum entangling power and the set of complex Hadamard matrices. Finally, we discuss distinguishability of unitary operators in the setting of the stated diagonal symmetry.

Abstract:We consider dual unitary operators and their multi-leg generalizations that have appeared at various places in the literature. These objects can be related to multi-party quantum states with special entanglement patterns: the sites are arranged in a spatially symmetric pattern and the states have maximal entanglement for all bipartitions that follow from the reflection symmetries of the given geometry. We consider those cases where the state itself is invariant with respect to the geometrical symmetry group. The simplest examples are those dual unitary operators which are also self dual and reflection invariant, but we also consider the generalizations in the hexagonal, cubic, and octahedral geometries. We provide a number of constructions and concrete examples for these objects for various local dimensions. All of our examples can be used to build quantum cellular automata in 1+1 or 2+1 dimensions, with multiple equivalent choices for the “direction of time”.

Highly-entangled stationary states from strong symmetries

Abstract:We find that the presence of strong non-Abelian conserved quantities can lead to highly entangled stationary states even for unital quantum channels. We derive exact expressions for the bipartite logarithmic negativity, Rényi negativities, and operator space entanglement for stationary states restricted to one symmetric subspace, with focus on the trivial subspace. We prove that these apply to open quantum evolutions whose commutants, characterizing all strongly conserved quantities, correspond to either the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra or to the Read-Saleur commutants. The latter provides an example of quantum fragmentation, whose dimension is exponentially large in system size. We find a general upper bound for all these quantities given by the logarithm of the dimension of the commutant on the smaller bipartition of the chain. As Abelian examples, we show that strong U($1$) symmetries and classical fragmentation lead to separable stationary states in any symmetric subspace. In contrast, for non-Abelian SU$(N)$ symmetries, both logarithmic and Rényi negativities scale logarithmically with system size. Finally, we prove that while Rényi negativities with $n>2$ scale logarithmically with system size, the logarithmic negativity (as well as generalized Rényi negativities with $n<2$) exhibits a volume law scaling for the Read-Saleur commutants. Our derivations rely on the commutant possessing a Hopf algebra structure in the limit of infinitely large systems, and hence also apply to finite groups and quantum groups.

Abstract:The purpose of controlling a quantum system is to steer the system from an initial state to a target state. Such a control problem can be changed into the problem of generating the desired unitary evolution operators by using an appropriate decomposition. By means of the desired state's exponential factor product theorem in the right-invariant system, the desired unitary evolution operators of a quantum system can be obtained. This paper investigates the functions and features of the Magnus decomposition, the Wei-Norman decomposition, the Lie Group decomposition and the Cartan decomposition contrastively and respectively. Properties and realization performance of those decompositions are analyzed, too. Each type of decomposition applied to different situations is also given.

Abstract:In a non-equilibrium many-body system, the quantum information dynamics between non-complementary regions is a crucial feature to understand the local relaxation towards statistical ensembles. Unfortunately, its characterization is a formidable task, as non-complementary parts are generally in a mixed state. We show that for integrable systems, this quantum information dynamics can be quantitatively understood within the quasiparticle picture for the entanglement spreading. Precisely, we provide an exact prediction for the time evolution of the logarithmic negativity after a quench. In the space-time scaling limit of long times and large subsystems, the negativity becomes proportional to the Rényi mutual information with Rényi index . We provide robust numerical evidence for the validity of our results for free-fermion and free-boson models, but our framework applies to any interacting integrable system.

Abstract:Quantum Entanglement is one of the key manifestations of quantum mechanics that separate the quantum realm from the classical one. Characterization of entanglement as a physical resource for quantum technology became of uppermost importance. While the entanglement of bipartite systems is already well understood, the ultimate goal to cope with the properties of entanglement of multipartite systems is still far from being realized. This dissertation covers characterization of multipartite entanglement using algebraic-geometric tools. Firstly, we establish an algorithm to classify multipartite entanglement by $k$-secant varieties of the Segre variety and $\ell$-multilinear ranks that are invariant under Stochastic Local Operations with Classical Communication (SLOCC). We present a fine-structure classification of multiqubit and tripartite entanglement based on this algorithm. Another fundamental problem in quantum information theory is entanglement transformation that is quite challenging regarding to multipartite systems. It is captivating that the proposed entanglement classification by algebraic geometry can be considered as a reference to study SLOCC and asymptotic SLOCC interconversions among different resources based on tensor rank and border rank, respectively. In this regard, we also introduce a new class of tensors that we call \emph{persistent tensors} and construct a lower bound for their tensor rank. We further cover SLOCC convertibility of multipartite systems considering several families of persistent tensors.

Relation Between Geometric Phases of Entangled Bipartite Systems and Their Subsystems

Abstract:This paper focuses on the geometric phase of entangled states of bipartite systems under bilocal unitary evolution. We investigate the relation between the geometric phase of the system and those of the subsystems. It is shown that (1) the geometric phase of cyclic entangled states with nondegenerate eigenvalues can always be decomposed into a sum of weighted nonmodular pure state phases pertaining to the separable components of the Schmidt decomposition, although the same cannot be said in the noncyclic case, and (2) the geometric phase of the mixed state of one subsystem is generally different from that of the entangled state even if the other subsystem is kept fixed, but the two phases are the same when the evolution operator satisfies conditions where each component in the Schmidt decomposition is parallel transported.

Abstract:We explore a notion of decomposably divisible (D-divisible) quantum evolution families, recently introduced in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 56, 485202 (2023). Both necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for highly-symmetric qubit and qudit dynamical maps. Through a restructurization of the evolution generators, we encode the decomposable divisibility into the positivity of time-dependent coefficients that multiply generators of D-divisible dynamical maps. This provides an analogy to the CP-divisibility property, which is equivalent to the positivity of decoherence rates that multiply Markovian semigroup generators.

Abstract:We present a method to find the decompositions of tripartite entangled pure states which are smaller than two successive Schmidt decompositions. The method becomes very simple when one of the subsystems is a qubit. In this particular case, we get a classification of states according to their decompositions. Furthermore, we also use this method to classify the entangled states that can be inter-converted through stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). More general tripartite systems are briefly discussed.

Abstract:We investigate the entanglement properties in the symmetric subspace of $N$-partite $d$-dimensional systems (qudits). For diagonal symmetric states, we show that there is no bound entanglement for $d = 3,4 $ and $N = 3$. Further, we present a constructive algorithm to map multipartite diagonal symmetric states of qudits onto bipartite symmetric states of larger local dimension. This technique greatly simplifies the analysis of multipartite states and allows to infer entanglement properties for any even $N \geq 4 $ due to the fact that the PPT conditions that arise from the bipartite symmetric state correspond to the same PPT conditions that appear in the multipartite diagonal symmetric state.

Abstract:Local unitary equivalence is an important ingredient for quantifying and classifying entanglement. Verifying whether or not two quantum states are local unitary equivalent is a crucial problem, where only the case of multipartite pure states is solved. For mixed states, however, the verification of local unitary equivalence is still a challenging problem. In this paper, based on the coefficient matrices of generalized Bloch representations of quantum states, we find a variety of local unitary invariants for arbitrary-dimensional bipartite quantum states. These invariants are operational and can be used as necessary conditions for verifying the local unitary equivalence of two quantum states. Furthermore, we extend the construction to the arbitrary-dimensional multipartite case. We finally apply these invariants to estimate concurrence, a vital entanglement measure, showing the practicability of local unitary invariants in characterizing entanglement.

Abstract:Local unitary operations allow for a unifying approach to the quantification of quantum correlations among the constituents of a bipartite quantum system. For pure states, the distance between a given state and its image under least-perturbing local unitary operations is a bona fide measure of quantum entanglement, the so-called entanglement of response, which can be extended to mixed states via the convex roof construction. On the other hand, when defined directly on mixed states perturbed by local unitary operations, such a distance turns out to be a bona fide measure of quantum correlations, the so-called discord of response. Exploiting this unified framework, we perform a detailed comparison between two-body entanglement and two-body quantum discord in infinite XY quantum spin chains both in symmetry-preserving and symmetry-breaking ground states as well as in thermal states at finite temperature. The results of the investigation show that in symmetry-preserving ground states the two-point quantum discord dominates over the two-point entanglement, while in symmetrybreaking ground states the two-point quantum discord is strongly suppressed and the two-point entanglement is essentially unchanged. In thermal states, for certain regimes of Hamiltonian parameters, we show that the pairwise quantum discord and the pairwise entanglement can increase with increasing thermal fluctuations.

Entangling power of symmetric multiqubit systems: a geometrical approach

Abstract:Unitary gates with high entangling capabilities are relevant for several quantum-enhanced technologies. For symmetric multiqubit systems, such as spin states or bosonic systems, the particle exchange symmetry restricts these gates and also the set of not-entangled states. In this work, we analyze the entangling power of unitary gates in these systems by reformulating it as an inner product between vectors with components given by SU$(2)$ invariants. For small number of qubits, this approach allows us to study analytically the entangling power including the detection of the unitary gate that maximizes it. We observe that extremal unitary gates exhibit entanglement distributions with high rotational symmetry, same that are linked to a convex combination of Husimi functions of certain states. Furthermore, we explore the connection between entangling power and the Schmidt numbers admissible in some quantum state subspaces. Thus, the geometrical approach presented here suggests new paths for studying entangling power linked to other concepts in quantum information theory.

Abstract:Symmetry is one of the central mysteries of quantum mechanics and plays an essential role in multipartite entanglement. In this paper, we consider the separability problem of quantum states in the symmetric space. We establish the relation between the separability of multiqubit symmetric states and the decomposability of Hermitian positive semidefinite matrices. This relation allows us to exchange concepts and ideas between quantum entanglement and Vandermonde decomposition. As an application, we build a suite of tools to investigate the decomposability and show the power of this relation both in theoretical and numerical aspects. For theoretical results, we establish the witness for the decomposability similar to the entanglement witness and characterize the decomposability of some subclasses of matrices. Furthermore, we provide the necessary conditions for the decomposability. Besides, we suggest a numerical algorithm to check whether a given matrix is decomposable. The numerical examples are tested to show the effectiveness.

Abstract:We show that any unitary operator on the d(A) x d(B) system (d(A) >= 2) can be decomposed into the product of at most 4d(A) - 5 controlled unitary operators. The number can be reduced to 2d(A) - 1 when d(A) is a power of two. We also prove that three controlled unitaries can implement a bipartite complex permutation operator, and discuss the connection to an analogous result on classical reversible circuits. We further show that any n-partite unitary on the space C-d1 circle times...circle times C-dn is the product of at most [2 Pi(n-1)(j=1)(2dj - 2) - 1] controlled unitary gates, each of which is controlled from n - 1 systems. We also decompose any bipartite unitary into the product of a simple type of bipartite gate and some local unitaries. We derive dimension-independent upper bounds for the controlled-NOT gate cost or entanglement cost of bipartite permutation unitaries (with the help of ancillas of fixed size) as functions of the Schmidt rank of the unitary. It is shown that such costs under a simple protocol are related to the log-rank conjecture in communication complexity theory via the link of nonnegative rank.
Operator Space Entangling Power of Quantum Dynamics and Local Operator Entanglement Growth in Dual-Unitary Circuits

Abstract:Operator entanglement is a well-established measure of operator complexity across a system bipartition. In this work, we introduce a measure for the ability of a unitary channel to generate operator entanglement, representing an operator-level generalization of the state-space entangling power. This operator space entangling power is demonstrated to be linked to the scrambling properties of the unitary channel via the recently introduced concept of mutual averaged non-commutativity of quantum operator algebras. An upper bound for the operator space entangling power is identified, corresponding to unitary channels with scrambling properties akin to those of typical unitaries. Additionally, for Hamiltonian dynamics, we find that the short-time growth rate of the operator space entangling power matches the Gaussian scrambling rate of the bipartite out-of-time-order-correlator, establishing a direct link between information scrambling and operator entanglement generation for short time scales. Finally, we examine the average growth of local operator entanglement across a symmetric bipartition of a spin-chain. For dual-unitary circuits, a combination of analytical and numerical investigations demonstrates that the average growth of local operator entanglement exhibits two distinct regimes in relation to the operator space entangling power of the building-block gate.
