Interpretation of heating and cooling data from thermal cone penetration test using a 1D numerical model and a PSO algorithm

Abstract:<p>A thermal cone penetration test (T-CPT) with heating and cooling is suggested for recording temperature changes at a pause in penetration [R3-5], serving as an efficient method for the identification of soil thermal properties. A numerical model for the one-dimensional heat conduction problem is proposed to simulate a T-CPT with considerations of [R3-6] the probe size and heating/cooling periods. Verifications with rigorous analytical solutions are performed, and the results of simulated [R3-3] cooling tests and heating-cooling tests are presented along with the predictions based on the analytical solutions. A PSO algorithm is then employed to perform the parameter identification for this inverse problem with complex boundary conditions, and the results show that the predictions of thermal properties can be improved with limited computing needs. The PSO analysis is examined by comparison with a model with the same assumptions that leads to a 'perfect' result and cannot assure the applicability. Further study is needed on real data to confirm the results. [R3-4] This study provides a potentially effective approach for the interpretation of T-CPT data, which can serve as a stepping stone for further improvements with considerations of the effects of penetration and heating-cooling processes on the response of a probe-soil system.</p>
