Abstract:A model for the superplastic deformation mechanism was presented and the fact that superplasticity is a distinct rate-controlling mechanism in the high temperature deformation of fine-grained materials, with its own and unique dependence of strain rate on grain size, stress and temperature, was emphasized. The proposed mechanism assumes that the strain is achieved mainly by three-dimensional grain rearrangement which proceeds by interface sliding accompanied by grain boundary migration and grain rotation and accomodated by individual dislocations climbing into a narrow region near the boundary and being annihilated into the boundary. The new dislocations necessary to continue the deformation process are supplied by the climbing dislocations themselves which multiply by a Bardeen-Herring mechanism. The model gives an activation energy equal to that for grain boundary diffusion, a second power stress dependence and an inverse second power grain size dependence of the strain rate. The proposed model predicts several microstructural features in superplasticity which are in good agreement with experimental observations.
