Abstract:Removal of volatile organic contaminants (VOCs) from water is an important task for environmental protection. Silicone oil has many merits but can not be directly applied in extraction of VOCs due to its high viscosity, which can negatively affect the mass transfer. Therefore a new purification method with extractant microcapsules has been developed in this work. Polysulphone microcapsules containing silicone oil were prepared successfully using a solvent evaporation method. The mass transfer performance was determined with toluene as the recovered component and with the prepared microcapsules as the separation agent. Extraction equilibrium could be reached in similar to 60 min. The maximum uptake of toluene was 24.5 mg g(-1) microcapsules. Microcapsules were reused four times and showed very good stability. Using microcapsules containing silicone oil as the separation agent, high and stable extraction capacity has been successfully achieved, especially without any phase dispersion and phase separation processes. It may be concluded that low energy will be required in the new separation process.
A facile approach to silica-modified polysulfone microfiltration membranes for oil-in-water emulsion separation

Abstract:A versatile strategy to fabricate newly-developed silica-modified membranes based on organic/inorganic hybridization for oil/water separation is described in this study. The modified membranes are easily obtained by a simple two-step immersion of polysulfone hollow fiber membranes with radial gradient microstructure (RGM-PSF) into a silicon solution of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) mixed with 3glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (COPTS) and subsequently into a lactic acid solution. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were utilized to characterize the surface compositions and microstructures. A micro/nano-scaled SiO2-based coating was generated roughly and continuously on the membrane surfaces, endowing them with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. Results of dead-end filtration experiments demonstrated that the hybridized RGMPSF membranes could be applied in oil-in-water emulsion separation far more efficiently, with higher water permeate flux, better oil rejection ratio, and higher pressure endurance than those of the common ones. Therefore, this study has provided a facile approach to prepare silica -modified membranes with special wettability, showing prominent application prospects for oily wastewater treatment in practical processes.
Preparation of uniform microcapsules with silicone oil as continuous phase in a micro-dispersion process.

Abstract:This paper presents an improved solvent evaporation method with silicone oil ( PDMS) as the continuous phase for preparation of microcapsules to make more polymer solvents available. A microchannel device was used to produce emulsions instead of mechanical stirring to prepare the mono-dispersed microcapsules. Under the conditions of lower evaporation temperature and shorter evaporation time, uniform polyacrylonitrile (PAN) microcapsules containing Aliquat 336 (ALQ) have been successfully prepared. N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with lower evaporation ability was applied as the polymer solvent. The prepared microcapsules have rough surfaces and homogeneously internal structures. By changing the two-phase flow rate, the mean size of microcapsules can be easily controlled. When more ALQ was added in polymer solution, the loading ratio of microcapsules increased. The mass transfer performance and stability were determined by extraction of Cr (VI) ions from its aqueous solution. The mass transfer rate was fast enough. After three times of repeated extraction and stripping, the microcapsules kept almost the same extraction ability, which indicated that the microcapsules have very good stability.
A new technique for sampling fluid from the retro-silicone oil space in silicone oil-filled eyes

Silicone-Based Tissue-Mimicking Phantom for Needle Insertion Simulation

Abstract:Silicone-based tissue-mimicking phantom is widely used as a surrogate of tissue for clinical simulators, allowing clinicians to practice medical procedures and researchers to study the performance of medical devices. This study investigates using the mineral oil in room-temperature vulcanizing silicone to create the desired mechanical properties and needle insertion characteristics of a tissue-mimicking phantom. Silicone samples mixed with 0, 20, 30, and 40 wt. % mineral oil were fabricated for indentation and needle insertion tests and compared to four types of porcine tissues (liver, muscle with the fiber perpendicular or parallel to the needle, and fat). The results demonstrated that the elastic modulus and needle insertion force of the phantom both decrease with an increasing concentration of mineral oil. Use of the mineral oil in silicone could effectively tailor the elastic modulus and needle insertion force to mimic the soft tissue. The silicone mixed with 40 wt. % mineral oil was found to be the best tissue-mimicking phantom and can be utilized for needle-based medical procedures.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Silicone oil, as a major component in conditioner, is beneficial in the moisture preservation and lubrication of hair. However, it is difficult for silicone oil to directly absorb on the hair surface because of its hydrophobicity. Stable nanoemulsions containing silicone oil may present as a potential solution to this problem.METHODS:Silicone oil nanoemulsions were prepared using the oil-in-water method with nonionic surfactants. Emulsion particle size and distribution were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The kinetic stability of this nanoemulsion system was investigated under accelerated stability tests and long-term storage. The effect of silicone oil deposition on hair was examined by analyzing the element of hair after treatment of silicone oil nanoemulsions.RESULTS:Nonionic surfactants such as Span 80 and Tween 80 are suitable emulsifiers to prepare oil-in-water nanoemulsions that are both thermodynamically stable and can enhance the absorption of silicone oil on hair surface.CONCLUSION:The silicone oil-in-water nanoemulsions containing nonionic surfactants present as a promising solution to improve the silicone oil deposition on the hair surface for hair care applications.
Fabrication of silicone oil microcapsules with silica shell by miniemulsion method

Abstract:Silicone oil microcapsules with thin silica shell (about 20nm in thickness) were readily prepared by miniemulsion technique. The emulsion droplets consisting of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), dimethylsilicone fluid and octadecyltrimethoxy (OTMS) were first stabilized in water with sodium laurylsulfonate/triton X-100 (SLS/OP-10) as surfactants and subsequently aged under stirring at pH value of 7.5, during which the silica shell formed through hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS/OTMS at the oil droplet/water interface. The obtained microcapsule latex had a solid content of as high as 17.6wt% and very good long-term storage stability, which are absolutely benefit for practical application. The microcapsule size, around at 200nm, was slightly changed with the mass ratios of SLS/OP-10 and TEOS/OTMS. The silicone oil microcapsules were directly embedded into waterborne coatings and showed a good slow-releasing property.

Abstract:The longevity of foam made using sodium tetradecyl sulphate and gas (air or a CO 2 :O 2 mixture) is increased significantly if silicone-free syringes are used over the normal syringes containing silicone oil lubrication. However, the plungers in silicone-free syringes start sticking after several passages when making foam for sclerotherapy, preventing the smooth injection of the resulting foam. We describe a three syringe technique which allows foam to be made using the Tessari Tourbillon ‘three-way stopcock’ principle between two syringes, but with the foam ending up in a third syringe which has not undergone multiple passages of the plunger. This allows a smoother injection of the resultant foam, which is particularly useful when injecting small diameter veins under ultrasound control.
Distribution of Silicone Oil in Prefilled Glass Syringes Probed with Optical and Spectroscopic Methods.

Abstract:Prefilled glass syringes (PFSs) have become the most commonly used device for the delivery of recombinant protein therapeutics in parenteral formulations. In particular, auto-injectors preloaded with PFSs greatly facilitate the convenient and efficient self-administration of protein therapeutics by patients. Silicone oil is used as a lubricant in PFSs to facilitate the smooth motion of the plunger during injection. However, there have been few sophisticated analytical techniques that can qualitatively and quantitatively characterize in-situ the morphology, thickness, and distribution of silicone oil in PFSs. In this paper, we demonstrate the application of three optical techniques including confocal Raman microscopy, Schlieren optics, and thin film interference reflectometry to visualize and characterize silicone oil distribution in PFS. The results showed that a container coating process could produce unevenly distributed silicone oil on the glass barrel of PFSs. An insufficiency of the amount of silicone oil on the glass barrel of a PFS can cause stalling when the device is preloaded into an auto-injector. These analytical techniques can be applied to monitor the silicone oil distribution in PFSs.
A High-Pressure Extraction Technique and Its Application in Seed Oil

Abstract:An experimental apparatus for high-pressure extraction of seed oil was designed and established.At 14～24℃ and about 6 MPa the apparatus was applied to a model system:cloth adsorbed with oil;the extraction results showed the oil could be quickly extracted into liquid carbon dioxide within 40 min at different extraction temperature,indicating the availability of the technique.At 25～40℃ and 0.4～1.0 MPa the apparatus was employed to extract seed oil from unbroken soybean and peanut respectively by using liquefied-gas as the extractant.Moreover,the oil extraction from unbroken soybean and peanut were also investigated at atmospheric pressure by using conventional hexane as the extractant.The oil yields obtained from the same material by the two methods were compared and analyzed.Results showed that hexane as solvent for extracting soybean at the boiling point of hexane with the extraction rate of 2.88% was more favorable than liquefied-gas implemented at high pressure;liquefied-gas as the solvent at high pressure for extracting peanut at 40℃with the extraction rate of 4.91% was better than hexane.

Abstract:Silicone aerogels are promising in efficient thermal insulating and oil absorbent materials due to the low density, low thermal conductivity, and unique micro-/nano- porous structure. However, poor mechanical reliability and water repellency along with the complicated processing greatly hinder their potential applications in emerging fields. Herein, we report a lightweight, wide-temperature mechanically flexible and surface super-hydrophobic silicone aerogels with tuned cross-linked network via a facile ambient drying process. Poly (methylhydridosiloxane) (PMHS) with different hydrogen contents was utilized to react with vinylmethyldimethoxysilane under Pt catalyst via hydrosilylation reaction and thus tune the cross-linking network in silicone aerogel effectively. The optimized PMHS-based silicone aerogels as-prepared exhibit a low density of 70–150 mg cm−3, good mechanical reliability in both liquid nitrogen and high-temperature condition of 200 °C, excellent compressive resilience after 100 cyclic compressions, and outstanding surface water repellency with water contact angle of ∼165° and water sliding angle of <3°. As expected, such multi-functional PMHS aerogels show a better thermal insulating performance than the commercial polymer foam materials. Furthermore, the as-prepared silicone aerogels not only display outstanding absorption capacity for both floating and sunken oil/solvent but also demonstrate excellent continuous oil/water separation efficiency. Clearly, the versatile PMHS-based aerogel prepared in this work may provide a new route for the design and development of high-performance silicone aerogel materials.

Abstract:As the packaging of choice for many therapeutic proteins, prefilled syringes have been widely used in biopharmaceutical industry as primary containers, where silicone oil is applied to ensure their proper functionality. Adequate lubrication from sufficient amount of silicone oil and its appropriate distribution across syringe barrels is crucial for successful administration of drug product (DP) from the prefilled syringes; however, silicone oil is also susceptible to leaching from the syringe surface into the formulation with the potential to interact with therapeutic proteins, which could lead to the formation of visible and sub-visible aggregates and/or particles that are potentially immunogenic. Accurate determination and careful control of silicone oil levels in both empty syringes and protein drug products are therefore critical in process development to ensure syringe functionality, drug product quality, and patient safety. On the other hand, analysis of silicone oil can be challenging especially when the analysis is performed on formulated protein drug products, where matrix effects could be significant. It is demonstrated in this study that silicone oil in empty syringes or formulated drug products can be extracted effectively using organic solvents and quantitatively determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with a universal detector. It was also shown that direct extraction of silicone oil from formulated protein drug products can be very challenging, but pretreatment of the protein drug products with pepsin enzymatic digestion facilitated the extraction process, which enabled the analysis of silicone oil in the drug product at low ppm levels.

Investigation on the Dispersion Mass Transfer in the Interface Between Silicone Oil and Water

Abstract:In this work, the dispersion mass transfer of the silicone oil-water mixture, especially the material dispersion process in the silicone oil/water interface was studied. Adopt a combination of macro test methods and microscopic test methods, the Cryo-scanning electron Microscope (Cryo-SEM) and the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) were introduced into the work of this paper respectively. The interface region between the dispersed phase and the continuous phase in the silicone oil-water mixture was investigated by the Cryo-SEM, the boundary of pure silicone oil droplets was studied by the TEM. Moreover, a simple and practical silicone oil-water interface characteristic measuring instrument (ICMI) has been designed and made for the measurement of properties in the silicone oil-water mixture interface. The results show that the silicone oil boundary is continuous and free of other impurities, and the interface presents a three-layer structure of "silicone oil-associated matter-water", the Cryo-SEM images show the associated matter formed a layer of shell structure at the interface. The ICMI measurements show that the formation of the associated matter will lead to a rapid increase in interfacial pressure, while the associated matter migration will lead to rapid relaxation of the interface, and the relaxation effect is greater than the diffusion effect. This study shows that the dispersion mass transfer between silicone oil and water are consists of two interrelated stages: in the initial stage of mixing, continuous liquid phase splitting produces a large number of droplets, the diameter of the droplet group has a centralized distribution law, and there exists a sole clockwise circulation in the droplet. In the second stage, a kind of associated matter is formed by molecular aggregation in the interface area between the dispersed phase and the continuous phase, the associated matter contains both the silicone oil component and the water component. The formation and migration of the associated matter will result in a compression and relaxation effect of the interface. 3D Printing of an Oil/Water Mixture Separator with In Situ Demulsification and Separation

Abstract:Currently, many meshes, membranes, and fabrics with extreme wettability of superhydrophobicity/superoleophilicity, or superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity are promising candidates for oil/water mixture separation. Nevertheless, a facile yet effective way to design and fabricate porous mesh still remains challenging. In this work, fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing of Fe/polylactic acid (PLA) composites was employed to fabricate superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic mesh (S-USM) with hydrogel coatings via the surface polymerization of Fe(II)-mediated redox reaction. In addition, salt of aluminum chloride was incorporated within the hydrogel coating, which was attributed to strengthening the demulsification of oil-in-water emulsions, resulting in efficient separation of oil-in-water mixtures. The S-USM was efficient for a wide range of oil-in-water mixtures, such as dodecane, diesel, vegetable oil, and even crude oil, with a separation efficiency of up to 85%. In this study, the flexible design and fabrication of 3D printing were used for the facile creation of spherical oil skimmers with hydrogel coatings that were capable of removing the floating oil. Most importantly, this work is expected to promote post-treatment processes using 3D printing as a new manufacturing technology and, in this way, a series of devices of specific shape and function will be expanded to satisfy desired requirements and bring great convenience to personal life.

A Facile Method to Control Pore Structure of PVDF/SiO2 Composite Membranes for Efficient Oil/Water Purification

Abstract:The use of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) microfiltration (MF) membranes to purify oily water has received much attention. However, it is challenging to obtain high-performance PVDF microfiltration membranes due to severe surface fouling and rapid decline of permeability. This study explored a new approach to fabricate high-performance PVDF/silica (SiO2) composite membrane via the use of a polymer solution featuring lower critical solution temperature (LCST) characteristics and the non-solvent thermally induced phase separation method (NTIPS). Coupling with morphological observations, the membrane formation kinetics were analyzed in depth to understand the synergistic effect between the LCST solution properties and fabrication conditions in NTIPS. Utilizing such a synergistic effect, the transition from finger-like macrovoid pores to bi-continuous highly connected pores could be flexibly tuned by increasing the PVDF concentration and the weight ratio of SiO2/PVDF in the dope solution and by raising the coagulation temperature to above the LCST of the solution. The filtration experiments with surfactant-stabilized oil-water emulsion showed that the permeation flux of the PVDF/SiO2 composite membranes was higher than 318 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1 and the rejection above 99.2%. It was also shown that the PVDF/SiO2 composite membranes, especially those fabricated above the LCST, demonstrated better hydrophilicity, which resulted in significant enhancement in the anti-fouling properties for oil/water emulsion separation. Compared to the benchmark pure PVDF membrane in oily water purification, the optimal composite membrane T70 was demonstrated via the 3-cycle filtration experiments with a significantly improved flux recovery ratio (Frr) and minimal reduced irreversible fouling (Rir). Overall, with the developed method in this work, facile procedure to tune the membrane morphology and pore structure was demonstrated, resulting in high performance composite membranes suitable for oil/water emulsion separation.

Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) foam materials with lightweight, excellent oil resistance and mechanical flexibility are highly needed for various practical applications in aerospace, transportation, and oil/water separation. However, traditional PDMS foam materials usually present poor chemical resistance and easily swell in various solvents, which greatly limits their potential application. Herein, novel fluorosilicone rubber foam (FSiRF) materials with different contents of trifluoropropyl lateral groups were designed and fabricated by a green (no solvents used) and rapid ( 120°), reliable mechanical flexibility (complete recovery ability after stretching of 130% strain or compressing of >60%), and improved chemical resistance and structural stability in various solvents, making them promising candidates for efficient and continuous oil–water separation. Abstract:Silicone oil has been recognized as an effective factor for dealing with the butyl rubber stopper demolding. For the problem how to decide reliable injection for butyl rubber stopper, we take on some research on the uniformity of silicone oil, and verify the test according to the finite element simulation. At first, a 3D model of mold is constructed, while the economic cost and reconfigurability are used as the indexes. Then computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is used to establish the function model, which is a powerful and often indispensible tool for modeling airflow and aerosol transport in realistic and complicated airway geometry. After we mesh the model and set the appropriate boundary conditions, better entrance speed of injection is achieved. From this result, it could be suggested that silicone oil could be quantified, and we can evaluate the quality of butyl rubber stopper silicide optimization.
