Abstract:TiO2 nanotubes were prepared through the reaction of TiO2 power in high-concentration NaOH under hydrothermal conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and ultraviolet visible spectrum (UV-Vis) were adopted to analyze as-prepared TiO2 nanotubes. The influence of rutile content in TiO2 powder on the structure and properties of TiO2 nanotube was investigated. The results show that pure rutile TiO2 powder is not conducive to the formation of TiO2 nanotubes, and the mixed crystal TiO2 nanotubes with uniform morphology can be prepared by TiO2 powder with anatase-rutile mixed crystal structure. With the increase of rutile content in the TiO2 powder, the rutile phase increases in as-prepared samples, and the photocatalytic activities first increase, and then decrease. The mixed crystal TiO2 nanotubes with anatase as dominant phase exhibit high photocatalytic decomposition activity to the methyl orange.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous thin films of composites of rutile TiO2 nanocrystals with amorphous Ta2O5 ore fabricated by evaporation-induced self-assembly followed by subsequent heat treatment beyond 780 degrees C Incorporation of selected amounts of Ta2O5 (20 mol%) in the mesoporous TiO2 film, together with the unique mesoporous structure itself increased the onset of crystallization temperature which is high enough to ensure the crystallization of amorphous titania to rutile. The ordered mesoporous structure benefits from a block-copolymer template, which stabilizes the mesostructure of the amorphous mixed oxides before crystallization. The surface and in-depth composition analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggests a homogeneous intermixing of the two oxides in the thin film. A detailed X-ray absorption fine structure measurement on the composite film containing 20 mol% Ta2O5 and heated to 800 degrees C confirms the amorphous nature of the Ta2O5 phase. Photocatalytic activity evaluation suggests that the rutile nanocrystals in the synthesized ordered mesoporous thin film possess good ability to assist the photodegradation of rhodamine B in water under illumination by UV light.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous, crystalline MgTa2O6 thin films with a mesoscopic nanoarchitecture were synthesized by evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) in combination with a sol-gel procedure. Utilization of novel templates, namely the block copolymers KLE (poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide)) and PIB6000 (CH3C(CH3)(2)(CH2C(CH3)(2))(107)CH2C(CH3)(2)C6H4O(CH2CH2O)(100)H), was the key to achieving a stable ordered mesoporous structure even upon crystallization of MgTa2O6 within the mesopore walls. The effect of the calcination temperature on the ability of the mesoporous films to assist the photodegradation of rhodamine B in water was studied. As a result, two maxima in the photocatalytic activity were identified in the calcination temperature range of 550-850 degrees C, peaking at 700 degrees C and 790 degrees C, and the origin of this was investigated by using temperature-dependent X-ray scattering. Optimal activity was obtained when the mesoporous film was heated to 790 degrees C; at this temperature, crystallinity was significantly high, with MgTa2O6 nanocrystals of 1.6 nm in size (averaged over all reflections), and an ordered mesoporous structure was maintained. When considering the turnover frequency of such photocatalysts, the optimized activity of the present nanoarchitectured MgTa2O6 thin film was ca. four times that of analogous anatase TiO2 films with ordered mesopores. Our study demonstrated that high crystallinity and well-developed mesoporosity have to be achieved in order to optimize the physicochemical performance of mesoporous metal-oxide films.

Abstract:(NH4)2Ta2O3F6 mesocrystals were constructed by oriented self-assembly ultra-fine subunits (nanosheets or nanobelts) via a one-step hydrothermal process. The influence of hydrothermal temperatures and reaction time was also investigated, which (NH4)2Ta2O3F6 mesocrystals were preferred to form under a higher hydrothermal temperature (>180 °C) and a longer reaction time (>6 h), otherwise the occurrence of C7H8N4O2. The addition of acetic acid hindered the hydrolysis process of Ta ions by forming intermediate tantalum acetate complex ions ([(CH3COO)xTaF6-x]-) instead of [TaOF3·2F]2−, and their subsequent hydrolysis-condensation process controlled the morphology evolution of (NH4)2Ta2O3F6 mesocrystals. More importantly, the mesocrystal precursor transformation strategy was employed to synthesize tantalum-based oxides nanomaterials, by calcining the (NH4)2Ta2O3F6 mesocrystals ranging from 400-1200 °C. Mesocrystalline TaO2F nanosheets were formed after heat-treatment at 400 and 500 °C, Ta2O5 nanorods occurred as the annealing temperature is higher than 800 °C. The as-synthesized (NH4)2Ta2O3F6, TaO2F and Ta2O5 mesocrystals were evaluated as photocatalysts on the methylene blue (MB) degradation efficiency, which exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance except for sample (NH4)2Ta2O3F6-180, in comparison with commercial nanosized Ta2O5 powders. Kinetics analysis indicated that photocatalytic degradation of MB to these samples followed the pseudo-first order model. Particularly, the highest photocatalytic activity was obtained by sample (NH4)2Ta2O3F6-160 with a rate constant of 0.018 min−1, which was nearly 9 times that of commercial Ta2O5 powders.

Abstract:3D ordered superstructures of mesocrystalline NH4TiOF3 and (NH4)2TiOF4 are synthesized via in-situ evolution from anodic TiO2 nanotube arrays grown on the Ti metal substrate under high current density. As revealed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy characterizations, the obtained NH4TiOF3 and (NH4)2TiOF4 mesocrystals consist of well aligned nanoparticle subunits at atomic level and can be converted to TiO2 (anatase) mesocrystals with their original exterior shapes retained upon thermal annealing. Close examination suggests that NH4TiOF3 and (NH4)2TiOF4 mesocrystals form via a nonclassical crystal growth process involving fast oriented aggregation of particles assisted by electric field-dipole interaction.

Abstract:Hollow TiO2 microspheres assembled with rutile mesocrystal nanorods were precipitated directly from a mixed aqueous solution of K2TiO(C2O4)2, H2O2 and HNO3 at a low temperature of 80°C. The hollow microspheres consisted of rutile mesocrystal nanorods with an average diameter of 200nm and length of 500nm. The morphology evolution upon the reaction duration suggests that the microstructure is formed through a hydrolysis–dissolution–precipitation procedure. The unique nanostructure of the hollow microspheres showed remarkable photocatalytic activity in photodegrading rhodamine B in water under the UV light illumination.

Abstract:Pure and carbon-coated tantalum-based oxides photocatalysts were synthesized via the mesocrystalline precursor transformation method by annealing pure and polydopamine-coated (NH4)2Ta2O3F6 mesocrystals in Ar. The oxygen-poor atmosphere thermal annealing process assisted the formation of nonstoichiometric TaO2F mesocrystals with more F and Ta2O5 nanorods with oxygen vacancies and the associated lower valence state Ta ions (Ta4+). Furthermore, the carbon coating, decomposed from coated polydopamine, helped to control their particle size within 100 nm by isolating the connection of (NH4)2Ta2O3F6 subunits. Hence, as-synthesized products, particularly carbon-coated Ta2O5 nanosheets, owning large surface area (67.6 m2 g−1), fine particle size (<100 nm), excellent electronic conductivity, decreased bandgap energy, enhanced and extended absorption in the visible range, exhibited preferable photocatalytic activity in the photodegradation of methylene blue, reaching a 76.54 % and 41.71 % removal under ultraviolet and visible light illumination, suggesting a promising candidate for wide-range responsive photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:As a potential candidate for photocatalytic H2 production from water splitting, Ta2O5 catalyst presents suitable conduction and valence band positions, but suffers from poor charge transfer ability, which seriously limits its photocatalytic performance enhancement. Here, a facile and eco‐friendly hydrothermal method was developed for the fabrication of one‐dimensional (1D) Ta2O5 nanorods using the freshly precipitated tantalic acids as the precursors. An oriented attachment mechanism was proposed for the growth of Ta2O5 nanorods. Moreover, the present synthetic approach was further extended to direct synthesis of nine kinds of alkaline tantalates and alkaline‐earth tantalates nanostructures, suggesting its general applicability. A significant increase in activity in photocatalytic H2 production was revealed on 1D Ta2O5 nanorods. The improved photocatalytic H2 production activity of Ta2O5 nanorods was mainly attributed to its 1D nanorods structure with high crystallization and large specific surface areas as well as excellent charge transfer efficiency.

Abstract:Monomolecular-layer perovskite Ba5Ta4O15 nanosheets with hexagonal structure have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The thickness of the nanosheets is about 1.1 nm, which corresponds to a monolayer of BatTa4O15 molecules, with the lateral size ranging from 50 to 200 nm. The optimal conditions for the formation of the nanoshects are maintaining the reactants above 270 degrees C for 24 h. A dissolution-recrystallization mechanism is suggested based on observations of the factors that influence nanosheet formation, such as reaction time, temperature, and basicity. Formation of Ba5Ta4O15 nanosheets takes precedence over other nanostructures under high concentrations of OH- because the hindering effect of OH- ions on the c-axis growth is strong. Thus, the extended growth rate of polyhedrons on one monolayer is much faster than the superposition rate of the monolayer, and the crystal grows more easily along the a- and b-planes. The Ba5Ta4O15 nanosheets show a high photocatalytic activity in the degradation of Rhodamine B and gaseous formaldehyde. The layered perovskite probably affects the photocatalytic activity by promoting the charge separation and delocalization of photogenerated electrons and holes.

Abstract:Single-crystalline uniform Ta(2)O(5) nanowires are prepared by a novel synthetic route. The formation of the nanowires involves an oriented attachment process caused by the reduction of surface energy. The nanowires are successfully applied to photocatalytic H(2) evolution, contaminant degradation, and dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The Ta(2)O(5)-based DSCs reveal a significant photovoltaic response, which has not been reported. As a photocatalyst, the Ta(2)O(5) nanowires possess high H(2) evolution efficiency under Xe lamp irradiation, nearly 27-fold higher than the commercial powders. A better performance of photocatalytic contaminant degradation is also observed. Such improvements are ascribed to better charge transport ability for the single-crystalline wire and a higher potential energy of the conduction band. This new synthetic approach using a water-soluble precursor provides a versatile way to prepare nanostructured metal oxides.

Abstract:The understanding and control of the structural complexity of mesoporous semiconductors with single-crystal-like nature are both attractive and challenging. Here, we report a crystallization-driven epitaxial assembly from monomicelles to construct branched mesoporous TiO2 mesocrystals (m-TiO2 MCs) with coherent atomic domains. The star-shaped multipods are obtained by two-step evaporation with nanocrystal mediation, primarily consisting of arms along < 001 >, < 101 >, and < 111 > crystal directions. For each arm, ordered open mesochannels arrange in parallel along the growth direction. The m-TiO2 MC multipods have a surface area of ∼116 m2/g and single-crystal-like frameworks and are good hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. Under full-spectrum irradiation, the branched m-TiO2 MCs exhibit a hydrogen evolution rate of 8 mmol h−1 g−1, which is more than four times higher than that of commercial TiO2 P25. This crystallization-driven self-assembly approach may provide valuable insight into designing programmable mesoporous mesocrystals by controlling the oriented assembly of monomicelle building blocks.

Abstract:In this article, we report a controllable and reproducible approach to prepare highly ordered 2-D hexagonal mesoporous crystalline TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites with variable Ti/Si ratios (0 to infinity). XRD, TEM, and N2 sorption techniques have been used to systematically investigate the pore wall structure, and thermal stability functioned with the synthetic conditions. The resultant materials are ultra highly stable (over 900 degrees C), have large uniform pore diameters (approximately 6.8 nm), and have high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface areas (approximately 290 m2/g). These mesostructured TiO2-SiO2 composites were obtained using titanium isopropoxide (TIPO) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as precursors and triblock copolymer P123 as a template based on the solvent evaporation-induced co-self-assembly process under a large amount of HCl. Our strategy was the synchronous assembly of titanate and silicate oligomers with triblock copolymer P123 by finely tuning the relative humidity of the surrounding atmosphere and evaporation temperature according to the Ti/Si ratio. We added a large amount of acidity to lower condensation and polymerization rates of TIPO and accelerate the rates for TEOS molecules. TEM and XRD measurements clearly show that the titania is made of highly crystalline anatase nanoparticles, which are uniformly embedded in the pore walls to form the "bricked-mortar" frameworks. The amorphous silica acts as a glue linking the TiO2 nanocrystals and improves the thermal stability. As the silica contents increase, the thermal stability of the resulting mesoporous TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites increases and the size of anatase nanocrystals decreases. Our results show that the unique composite frameworks make the mesostructures overwhelmingly stable; even with high Ti/Si ratios (> or =80/20) the stability of the composites is higher than 900 degrees C. The mesoporous TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites exhibit excellent photocatalytic activities (which are higher than that for commercial catalyst P25) for the degradation of rhodamine B in aqueous suspension. The excellent photocatalytic activities are ascribed to the bifunctional effect of highly crystallized anatase nanoparticles and high porosity.

Abstract:Uniform and monodispersed TiO2 nanocrystals-assembled leaves-like nanosheets (TLNs) have been synthesized via a novel and direct hydrothermal method, i.e. a controlled hydrolysis of tetrabutyltitanate (TBOT) in ethanol without adding any surfactant reagents. The physical and chemical properties of TLNs were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra and BET surface area measurement. The photoelectrochemical performance of TLNs was characterized through photocurrent and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement. The photocatalytic activity of the TLNs was evaluated by photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) aqueous solution under simulated solar irradiation. The experimental results showed that the TLNs exhibited a much better photocatalytic activity than that of pure TiO2 (PT) and commercial TiO2 (P25).

Abstract:Morphology and crystalline-phase control of titanium dioxide is a crucial issue in the study of photocatalytic activity. Here, we present a facile synthetic path combing the solgel method with solvothermal treatment to form hybrid mesoporous and microporous TiO2. The TiO2 precursor was obtained by the solgel method, and this was self-assembled into mesopores and micropores by NH4F corrosiveness on the surface of TiO2 under hydrothermal conditions. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N-2 adsorption measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterise the titania powders. The results reveal that NH4F not only improved the formation of the crystallised anatase phase but also served as a corrosive agent modified on the surface of TiO2 precursors. Defective voids among these nanoparticles formed micropores by hydrothermal reaction of NH4F and TiO2 over a long time. When the NH4F concentration was 1.0 mol.L-1, micropores became dominant,and few mesopores were obtained, and this results in a smaller average pore size. Thus, mesoporous and microporous structures were formed. Furthermore, these crystallised mesoporous and microporous anatase titania nanoparticles with uniform structure and high surface area have a higher photocatalytic activity for azo dye degradation under near UV irradiation.

Abstract:A mesoporous TiO2 with high photocatalytic activity was synthesized by assembling nanocrystalline particles using dodecylamine (DDA) as organic linkers. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA). Low-angle XRD and TEM confirmed that the mesoporous TiO2 had a wormhole-like structure. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm showed products retained mesoporosity with a narrow pore size distribution (2.8–4.0nm) and high surface areas (104.4–346.0m2/g) to 673K. TG-DTA analysis revealed that the surfactant had been removed partly in as-synthesized samples. The pH value affected the order of mesoporous structure. The ordered mesoporous structure would not retain at pH=14. All calcined mesoporous TiO2 showed high photocatalytic activities on photodecomposition of cationic dye X-GL.
