Abstract:Donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated copolymers are one of known classes of organic optoelectronic materials and have been well developed. However, less attention has been paid on acceptor-acceptor (A-A) conjugated analogs. In this work, two types of A-A conjugated copolymers, namely P1-Cn and P2-Cn (n is the carbon number of their alkyl side chains), were designed and synthesized based on perylenediimide (PDI) and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BT). Different from P1-Cn, P2-Cn polymers have additional acetylene -spacers between PDI and BT and thus hold a more planar backbone configuration. Property studies revealed that P2-Cn polymers possess a much red-extended UV-vis absorption spectrum, stronger - interchain interactions, and one-order larger electron mobility in their neat film state than P1-Cn. However, all-polymer solar cells using P1-Cn as acceptor component and poly(3-hexyl thiophene) or poly(2,7-(9,9-didodecyl-fluoene)-alt-5,5-(4,7-dithienyl-2-yl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole) as donor component exhibited much better performance than those based on P2-Cn. Apart from their backbone chemical structure, the side chains were found to have little influence on the photophysical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties for both P1-Cn and P2-Cn polymers. Naphthalenediimide-based N-Type Polymer Acceptors with Pendant Twisted Perylenediimide Units for All-Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Polymeric acceptor based all-polymer solar cells have attracted wide interest due to their excellent mechanical properties. In order to combine the advantages of both the polymer and perylenediimide-based small-molecular acceptors, we designed and prepared a series of random copolymers via linking perylenediimide to the polymeric backbone of (naphthalenediimide/quinoxaline)-thieno[3,2-b]thiophene, which were successfully applied as polymer acceptors in solar cells. The effects of the pendant perylenediimide on the optical, electrochemical and photovoltaic performance were tuned via varying ratios of (quinoxaline-perylenediimide2) and naphthalenediimide. Atomic-force microscopic images showed that all random copolymers exhibited significantly improved miscibility with donor compared with an alternating copolymer reference, which coincided with the higher electron mobility measured by the space charge limited current method. The all-polymer solar cell based on the polymeric acceptor with high perylenediimide content achieved a power conversion efficiency of 4.81%. Although there is minimal conjugation between the perylenediimides and main chains, perylenediimides can also contribute to photocurrent generation.

Abstract:A polymer acceptor, named PX-1, is designed and synthesized using a polymerization strategy with grafted small molecule acceptors. This design approach allows for the freedom of end groups while maintaining efficient terminal packing, enhancing & pi;-& pi; interactions, and facilitating charge transport. All-polymer organic solar cells based on PM6: PX-1 demonstrate a promising efficiency of 13.55%. The result presents an alternative pathway for the design of high-efficiency polymer acceptors through the careful regulation of small molecule acceptor monomers and linker units. Abstract:Considering the combination of the advantages of both the acceptor-donor-acceptor and perylene diimide type acceptors, three new cross-conjugated small molecule non-fullerene acceptors were rationally designed and synthesized. Their thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties were systematically investigated. These acceptors exhibit highly extended absorption spectra ranging from 300 to 700 nm as well as appropriate lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels compared with those of the general acceptors based on perylene diimide. Non-fullerene polymer solar cells based on the resultant acceptors were fabricated in the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PTB7-Th:acceptor/PFN-Br/Ag configuration. Benefiting from efficient exciton dissociation, reduced bimolecular recombination, and enhanced and balanced electron mobility, the device-based PDIBDT-IT exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.06% with a high short-circuit current density (J(SC)) of 13.60 mA/cm(2), a fill factor (FF) of 60.45%, and an open-circuit voltage (V-OC) of 0.74 V, which was higher than those of PDIBDT-RDN and PDIBDT-ITF. The underlying mechanism was carefully studied and discussed. The extended absorption of PDIBDT-IT contributes to its relatively high PCE; however, the performance will be potentially improved by ehnancing the electron mobility of these acceptors. Our results provide an efficient cross-conjugated approach and great flexibility in fine-tuning physicochemical properties, including absorption spectra and energy levels of the acceptors toward high-performance solar cells.

Abstract:The development of polymer electron acceptors lags far behind that of polymer electron donors. A general approach to improve photovoltaic performance of polymer electron donors is to incorporate conjugated side chains to the electron-rich unit. In this article, we introduce the "conjugated side chain" strategy to molecular design of polymer electron acceptors by incorporating conjugated side chains to the electron-deficient unit. The polymer backbones consist of alternating electron-deficient double BAN bridged bipyridine (BNBP) unit and electron-rich thiophene or selenophene unit. Polymer electron acceptors are developed by incorporating conjugated alkoxyphenyl side chains to the BNBP unit. Compared with conventional alkyl side chains, the conjugated alkoxyphenyl side chains endow the polymer electron acceptors with low-lying LUMO energy levels, enhanced pi-pi stacking, and high electron mobilities, which are very desirable for electron acceptors. The resulting all-PSCs exhibit an enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.46% with a small photon energy loss (E-loss,) of 0.51 eV or a PCE of 3.77% with an extremely small E-loss of 0.47 eV. This E-loss is among the smallest values reported for organic solar cells. These results demonstrate that the "conjugated side chain" strategy can be used not only for high-efficiency polymer electron donors but also for high-performance polymer electron acceptors.

Abstract:The active layer of all polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) is composed of a blend of a p -type conjugated polymer ( p -CP) as donor and an n -type conjugated polymer ( n -CP) as acceptor. All-PSCs possess the advantages of light weight, thin active layer, mechanical flexibility, low cost solution processing and high stability, but the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the all-PSCs was limited by the poor photovoltaic performance of the n -CP acceptors before 2016. Since the report of the strategy of polymerized small molecule acceptors (PSMAs) in 2017, the photovoltaic performance of the PSMA-based n -CPs improved rapidly, benefitted from the development of the A-DA'D-A type small molecule acceptors (SMAs). PCE of the all-PSCs based on the PSMA acceptors reached 17%–18% recently. In this review article, we will introduce the development history of the n -CPs, especially the recent research progress of the PSMAs. Particularly, the structure-property relationship of the PSMAs is introduced and discussed. Finally, current challenges and prospects of the n -CP acceptors are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:The design and synthesis of three n-type conjugated polymers based on a naphthalene diimide-thiophene skeleton are presented. The control polymer, PNDI-2HD, has two identical 2-hexyldecyl side chains, and the other polymers have different alkyl side chains; PNDI-EHDT has a 2-ethylhexyl and a 2-decyltetradecyl side chain, and PNDI-BOOD has a 2-butyloctyl and a 2-octyldodecyl side chain. These copolymers with different alkyl side chains exhibit higher melting and crystallization temperatures, and stronger aggregation in solution, than the control copolymer PNDI-2HD that has the same side chain. Polymer solar cells based on the electron-donating copolymer PTB7-Th and these novel copolymers exhibit nearly the same open-circuit voltage of 0.77 V. Devices based on the copolymer PNDI-BOOD with different side chains have a power-conversion efficiency of up to 6.89%, which is much higher than the 4.30% obtained with the symmetric PNDI-2HD. This improvement can be attributed to the improved charge-carrier mobility and the formation of favorable film morphology. These observations suggest that the molecular design strategy of incorporating different side chains can provide a new and promising approach to developing n-type conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Narrow‐bandgap polymer semiconductors are essential for advancing the development of organic solar cells. Here, a new narrow‐bandgap polymer acceptor L14, featuring an acceptor–acceptor (A–A) type backbone, is synthesized by copolymerizing a dibrominated fused‐ring electron acceptor (FREA) with distannylated bithiophene imide. Combining the advantages of both the FREA and the A–A polymer, L14 not only shows a narrow bandgap and high absorption coefficient, but also low‐lying frontier molecular orbital (FMO) levels. Such FMO levels yield improved electron transfer character, but unexpectedly, without sacrificing open‐circuit voltage (Voc), which is attributed to a small nonradiative recombination loss (Eloss,nr) of 0.22 eV. Benefiting from the improved photocurrent along with the high fill factor and Voc, an excellent efficiency of 14.3% is achieved, which is among the highest values for all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs). The results demonstrate the superiority of narrow‐bandgap A–A type polymers for improving all‐PSC performance and pave a way toward developing high‐performance polymer acceptors for all‐PSCs.

Abstract:Two new conjugated polymers have been designed and synthesized for polymer solar cells. Both of them exhibit excellent photovoltaic properties with a power conversion efficiency as high as 4.74%. Different from the traditional linear donor-acceptor (D-A) type conjugated polymers, these newly designed polymers have a two-dimensional conjugated structure with their tunable acceptors located at the end of D-A side chains and connected with the donors on the main chain through an efficient in-bridge. This approach provides great flexibility in fine-tuning the absorption spectra and energy levels of the resultant polymers for achieving high device performance.
Fused Nonacyclic Electron Acceptors with Additional Alkyl Side Chains for Efficient Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Three new non-fullerene acceptors with the core of a fused nonacyclic unit, and the end-capping groups of 3-dicycanovinylindan-1-one are designed and synthesized for polymer solar cells. Those acceptor molecules bear four additional aliphatic side chains at the nonacyclic core, which endow them excellent solubility and crystallization-morphology tunability. Meanwhile, the effect of side chains’ size on the optical absorptions, electrochemical properties, and photovoltaic performance are carefully investigated. The results show that the bulk of side chains just slightly affects optical absorption and electronic energy levels, however, it significantly influences the molecular stacking and morphology separation, as well as the eventual device performance. When they are matched with the donor polymer poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1′,3′-di-2-thienyl-5′,7′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1′,2′-c:4′,5′-c′]dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PBDB-T), the device based on the acceptor with octyl group can deliver the best PCE of 8.57%, which overwhelms those based on other two acceptor materials. This can be attributed to the preferable nanophase separation for their blend films, and high and balanced charge mobility. The results highlight the important role of backbone and side-chain tailoring in designing non-fullerene acceptors towards high-performance polymer solar cells.

Abstract:Recently, lots of high-performance linear π-conjugated polymer acceptors based on the strategy of polymerizing small-molecule acceptors have been developed. However, there very few reports on nonlinear π-conjugated polymer acceptors for all-polymer solar cells. Here, we explored and synthesized two nonlinear π-conjugated polymer acceptors, named TZ1 or TZ2, respectively. Compared with the nonfluorinated polymer acceptor TZ1, the fluorinated polymer acceptor TZ2 presents lower energy level and better molecular aggregation. After blending with PM6, the TZ2-based device displayed more efficient exciton dissociation, higher charge carries mobilities and less charge recombination, leading to its higher J sc of 14.94 mA cm−2. As a result, the TZ2-based device achieved a PCE of 7.41%, higher than the TZ1-based device (4.06%). Our results provide a new strategy to develop nonlinear π-conjugated polymer acceptors and demonstrate the selection of suitable bridges is of importance for the construction of nonlinear π-conjugated polymer acceptors.

Abstract:With their rapid development in recent years, organic solar cells hold the exciting potential to be a ground-breaking form of solar harvesting technology. Among these, all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) stand out owing to various advantages such as complementary absorption and superior stability. However, the advance of all-PSCs has been greatly impeded by energy level mismatches and unfavorable morphology of the active layer. Here, we report a molecular engineering approach featuring asymmetrical 4-methoxythiophene/ thiophene as conjugated side chains of the donor polymer to fine-tune the energy level alignment and phase separation. The corresponding polymer, namely, poly{4-[5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-methoxythiophen-2-yl]-8-[5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl]benzo[1,2-b: 4,5-b']dithiophene}-alt-[bis(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,6-difluoro-2-(2-hexyldecyl)-2H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole-4,7-diyl] (PMOT32) exhibited a power conversion efficiency that exceeded 8.5% in all-PSCs with poly{[N, N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenedicarboximide-2,6-diyl]- alt-5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene)} (N2200) as the acceptor. PMOT32: N2200 also maintained good photovoltaic performance when processed as a thick film or from non-halogenated solvents. Detailed comparisons with two other polymers with pure thiophene or 4-methoxythiophene as their side chains revealed how these side chains affected the photovoltaic performance via energy level alignment and phase separation.
Linker Unit Modulation of Polymer Acceptors Enables Highly Efficient Air-Processed All-Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:A group of regioregular polymer acceptors is synthesized by polymerizing Y6 moieties with different linker units including thiophene, vinylene, 2,2'-bithiophene, and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene, and their optoelectrical properties and photovoltaic performances are studied systematically. It is found that the linker units have significant impacts on the backbone planarity, conjugation, and hence optoelectrical properties of polymer acceptors. The vinylene-based PYF-V-o polymer shows a smaller dihedral angle between the end groups and vinylene units and a more rigid polymer backbone, thus affording bathochromic absorption and better electron-transporting capacity. As a result, the PM6:PYF-V-o based all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) are able to achieve the highest power conversion efficiency of 16.4% with an unprecedented small voltage loss of 0.49 V. Moreover, the PM6:PYF-V-o blend exhibits good resistance to environmental stressors and the air-processed PM6:PYF-V-o cells can still maintain a high efficiency of 16.1%, which is the best air-processed all-PSC efficiency reported to date. This study provides the structural-property guidance that can be used to facilitate the development of polymer acceptors for all-PSCs.
Nonconjugated Terpolymer Acceptors with Two Different Fused-Ring Electron-Deficient Building Blocks for Efficient All-Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:The ternary polymerization strategy of incorporating different donor and acceptor units forming terpolymers as photovoltaic materials has been proven advantageous in improving power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of polymer solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a series of low band gap nonconjugated terpolymer acceptors based on two different fused-ring electron-deficient building blocks (IDIC16 and ITIC) with adjustable photoelectric properties were developed. As the third component, ITIC building blocks with a larger π-conjugation structure, shorter solubilizing side chains, and red-shifted absorption spectrum were incorporated into an IDIC16-based nonconjugated copolymer acceptor PF1-TS4, which built up the terpolymers with two conjugated building blocks linked by flexible thioalkyl chain-thiophene segments. With the increasing ITIC content, terpolymers show gradually broadened absorption spectra and slightly down-shifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels. The active layer based on terpolymer PF1-TS4-60 with a 60% ITIC unit presents more balanced hole and electron mobilities, higher photoluminescence quenching efficiency, and improved morphology compared to those based on PF1-TS4. In all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs), PF1-TS4-60, matched with a wide band gap polymer donor PM6, achieved a similar open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.99 V, a dramatically increased short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 15.30 mA cm–2, and fill factor (FF) of 61.4% compared to PF1-TS4 (Voc = 0.99 V, Jsc = 11.21 mA cm–2, and FF = 55.6%). As a result, the PF1-TS4-60-based all-PSCs achieved a PCE of 9.31%, which is ∼50% higher than the PF1-TS4-based ones (6.17%). The results demonstrate a promising approach to develop high-performance nonconjugated terpolymer acceptors for efficient all-PSCs by means of ternary polymerization using two different A–D–A-structured fused-ring electron-deficient building blocks.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Five polymer acceptors based on naphthalene diimide (NDI) and diethynylbenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (DEBDT) alternating units were designed and synthesized. The resultant polymers have identical polymer backbones but different side chains on both NDI and DEBDT units. Their photoelectronic properties can be fine-tuned via systematic side chain engineering. In these polymers, the size of the alkyl side chains on NDI units have minimal impacts on light-harvesting properties and molecular energy levels, while introducing side chain groups into DEBDT units can significantly broad the absorption profile and tune the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels of polymers. All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) based on these polymer acceptors and PBDB-T as the electron-donating polymer were fabricated, where the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) varied from 0.42% to 5.84%. All-PSCs based on PBDB-T:PNEOD-C8 exhibits the best device performance, which can be ascribed to the lowered energy loss, good light-harvesting capability, balanced charge carrier mobility and proper blend film morphology. These observations indicate that modifying the side chains on both donor and acceptor unit of polymer acceptors is an effective strategy for optimizing their optical and electrical properties, thus lead to high-performance all-PSCs.

Abstract:In order to improve light absorption and promote n-type performance, random copolymerization strategy was employed to afford a series of random terpolymer acceptors with acceptor1-acceptor2-acceptor3 (A1-A2-A3) type backbone. The polymers were synthesized from distannylated electron-deficient bithiophene imide monomer with various electron-deficient dibrominated co-monomers using the typical palladium-catalyzed Stille coupling condensation polymerization. Compared with their parent polymers, these A1-A2-A3 type terpolymer acceptors, particularly the dihexylthieno[3,4-b]pyrazine based terpolymer PBTP, can exhibit good miscibility, appropriate polymer crystallinity, and improved absorption in the long-wavelength region due to the incorporation of a third strong electron-withdrawing acceptor moiety thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine. Benefitting from the noncovalent S···N interactions, PBTP possessed a planar skeleton and achieved the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.35% in the polymer series when serving as the acceptor material in all-polymer solar cells. These results indicate that the A1-A2-A3 type terpolymer acceptors should be promising candidates for developing high-performance all-polymer solar cells.

Abstract:We report two novel small-molecule non-fullerene acceptors, IF-TN and IDT-TN, with indenofluorene (IF) and indacenodithiophene (IDT) as their respective central electron-rich cores and naphthyl-fused indanone (N) as the electron-withdrawing end-groups. By pairing these non-fullerene acceptors with a widely used polymer PBDB-T, the fabricated polymer solar cells based on PBDB-T: IDT-TN obtain a power conversion efficiency up to 5.89%, associated with a relatively high open-circuit voltage of 0.97 V and a remarkably low non-radiative open-circuit voltage loss of 0.23 V. These findings provide an effective approach for the rational molecular design of small-molecule acceptors with low non-radiative open-circuit voltage loss.

Abstract:In this work, we present a new strategy to use fused and twisted conjugated backbones to construct conjugated small molecules and polymers as electron acceptors for non-fullerene solar cells. The new conjugated materials containing binary perylene bisimide (PBI) units linked with coplanar thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (as trans-PBI) or twisted thieno[2,3-b]thiophene (as cis-PBI) and the corresponding conjugated polymer cis-polyPBI were developed. A fused conjugated backbone ensures good charge transport, in which the twisted polymer cis-polyPBI was found to show the highest electron mobility of 1.2 x 10(-2) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in field-effect transistors. Meanwhile, a twisted conjugated backbone effectively prevents the aggregation and crystallization of PBI units, resulting in isotropic charge transport and finely tuned micro-phase separation in bulk-heterojunction thin films. The high electron mobility and isotropic crystallinity make the fused and twisted electron acceptors achieve high power conversion efficiencies above 6% in non-fullerene solar cells, while the coplanar molecule trans-PBI as the electron acceptor shows a very low efficiency of 0.13%.
