Abstract:Composite sorbent is widely recognized as a feasible solution to the improvement of ammonia solid sorption due to large sorption capacity, high sorption/desorption rate, good thermal and mechanic stability. This paper mainly focuses on two kinds of composite sorbents for ammonia sorption i.e. activated carbon and metal halides. Various matrices are analyzed and compared when considering different developing techniques. Thermal conductivity and permeability of composite sorbents are summarized in terms of compression density, mass ratio of sorbent and testing methods. Sorption characteristics e.g. sorption capacity and reaction rate are also be taken into account, which are compared with that of parent sorbents. Based on the comparative investigation of these thermophysical properties, the paper unrolls a comprehensive picture of advantages and disadvantages of each composite sorbent for ammonia sorption, which will be quite conducive to the design of sorption systems for various applications e.g. sorption refrigeration and sorption thermal energy storage.

Abstract:Aqueous ammonia has been widely applied to carbon dioxide capture thanks to its strong absorption capacity and low energy consumption, but the easily occurring ammonia escape may result in an additional environmental pollution. In this work, the aqueous ammonia with the Cr3+ or Ni2+ mixed at low temperatures is proposed and experimentally investigated to inhibit the ammonia escape and enhance carbon dioxide absorption. By taking the total ammonia escape, carbon dioxide absorption capacity and ammonia escape per unit carbon dioxide absorption as evaluation criteria, the effects of Ni2+ and Cr3+ on ammonia escape are compared. The results show that the increased reaction temperature and ammonia concentration result in the aggregated ammonia escape. The ammonia slip gets reduced but the carbon dioxide absorption is slightly affected with the Ni2+ and Cr3+ used due to the complex reaction between the metal ions and free ammonia. The additive of Ni2+ is basically superior to Cr3+ in restraining the ammonia escape, that the maximum inhibition efficiency of Ni2+ is 50.5% while Cr3+ is only 39.9%. By using additives, the reaction temperature can be raised to reduce the energy consumption of carbon dioxide absorption. It is recommended to adopt the chilled ammonia with additives for the carbon dioxide absorption by ammonia solution. (c) 2022 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In view of the characteristics and risks of ammonia, its removal is important for industrial production and environmental safety. In this study, viscose-based activated carbon fiber (ACF) was used as a substrate and chemically modified by nitric acid impregnation to enhance the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for ammonia. A series of modified ACF-based adsorbents were prepared and characterized using BET, FTIR, XPS, and Boehm titration. Isotherm tests (293.15 K, 303.15 K, 313.15 K) and dynamic adsorption experiments were performed. The characterization results showed that impregnation with low concentrations of nitric acid not only increased the surface acidic functional group content but also increased the specific surface area, while impregnation with high concentrations of nitric acid could be able to decrease the specific surface area. ACF-N-6 significantly increased the surface functional group content without destroying the physical structure of the activated carbon fibers. The experimental results showed that the highest adsorption of ammonia by ACFs was 14.08 mmol-L−1 (ACF-N-6) at 293 K, and the adsorption capacity was increased by 165% compared with that of ACF-raw; by fitting the adsorption isotherm and calculating the equivalent heat of adsorption and thermodynamic parameters using the Langmuir–Freundlich model, the adsorption process could be found to exist simultaneously. Regarding physical adsorption and chemical adsorption, the results of the correlation analysis showed that the ammonia adsorption performance was strongly correlated with the carboxyl group content and positively correlated with the relative humidity (RH) of the inlet gas. This study contributes to the development of an efficient ammonia adsorption system with important applications in industrial production and environmental safety.

Abstract:Bamboo-carbon was modified by nitric acid to enhance its absorption capacity.The effects of various parameters such as absorbent dosage,absorption time,absorption temperature and pH on ammonia nitrogen absorption efficiency of bamboo-carbon were investigated,meanwhile the absorption mechanism of ammonia nitrogen by modified bamboo-carbon was studied.The results showed that the ammonia nitrogen absorption capacity of bamboo-carbon was affected by both chemical and structural properties of the bamboo-carbon surface.Compared with bamboo-carbon,the surface properties of modified bamboo-carbon such as oxygen-containing functional groups,specific surface areas,total pore volume were higher,ammonia nitrogen removal ratio was increased from 20.1% to 82.2%,absorption equilibrium time decreased from 6 h to 4 h.Absorption of ammonia nitrogen by bamboo-carbon could be described by Freundlich equation.Furthermore,the absorption performance of modified bamboo-carbon was obviously affected by such parameters as absorbent dosage,absorption time,absorption temperature and pH.
Research on Surface Properties of Modified Activated Carbon Fiber and Its Mercury Adsorption Performance

Abstract:Three different specific surface area viscose-ACF (defined as ACF-1、ACF-2 and ACF-3) were chosen in the tests. The resulting materials ACF-N and ACF-NH3 were obtained after the sample ACF-1 was treated with HNO3 acid digestion and ammonia solution. Then the characterization of surface properties and Hg adsorption tests were conducted for these five kinds of ACFs. The nitrogen adsorption test at temperature 77.4K showed that micro-pore distribution (d2nm) of five samples existed differences. Micro-pore volume of ACF-N and ACF-NH3 samples were smaller than that of ACF-1. Surface micro-structure was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that oxygen functional groups such as carbonyl and carboxyl in ACF-N and nitrogen-containing functional groups in ACF-NH3 are significantly more than that in ACF-1. Microcrystalline structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. It was found that graphitization and crystal level of ACF-2 and ACF-3 also increased comparing with ACF-1. Mercury removal tests revealed that mercury adsorption capacity does not simply depend on micro-pore volume because of the effect of surface micro-structure. Increasing the content of oxygen and nitrogen-containing functional groups,to some extent,can enhance mercury removal performance of ACF.
Study on Low Concentration Ammonia Nitrogen Removal by Natural and Modified Clinoptilolites

Abstract:Ammonia nitrogen removal from synthetic aqueous solutions by natural and different modified clinoptilolites was investigated.The results show that the dynamic curves of ammonia nitrogen adsorption by natural and modified clinoptilolites fit the character of fast adsorption and slow equilibration,and their adsorption rates become higher with the initial concentrations of ammonia nitrogen increasing.Ammonia nitrogen adsorption by the natural and modified clinoptilolites fit the single molecule adsorption process,and Langmuir equation could well describe the isotherm adsorption.The adsorption reaction is endothermic process;therefore the adsorption capacity of clinoptilolite could increase when the temperature increased appropriately.The highest ammonia nitrogen adsorption efficiency was achieved by salt modified clinoptilolite because of the increase of surface area and cavity size,and salt modified method could also benefit the reuse of clinoptilolite.

Abstract:The increasing levels of ammonium in wastewater pose serious environmental issues, highlighting the urgent need for effective adsorbents to facilitate its removal. Although conventional biological treatment methods have certain drawbacks, adsorption using carbonaceous materials, such as carbon black produced from waste tires, presents a promising alternative for ammonium removal. However, the use of these materials has not been thoroughly investigated. This study focuses on optimizing the synthesis of carbon black modified with anionic surfactants to improve its capacity for ammonium adsorption. Utilizing Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and a Box‐Behnken design, the optimization process examined key variables, including reaction time, surfactant concentration, carbon black dosage, and surfactant type. Comprehensive characterization of the adsorbent was conducted to analyze its surface properties, functional groups, morphology, and elemental composition. The regression models produced highly accurate results with an R2 value of 0.9437. The optimal synthesis conditions were identified as a 12.30‐hour reaction time, a surfactant concentration of 8 mmol/L of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, and a carbon black dosage of 30 g, achieving an ammonium removal efficiency of 84.80%. This study offers a scalable solution for ammonium removal in wastewater, promising practical applications and future sustainable waste management research.

Abstract:Three modified bentonites, dry alkali modification, thermal modification, and acid modification, were prepared and characterized by XRD and FTIR. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate theft efficiency as adsorbent for ammonium removal. Multi-variables interaction effects were evaluated by Response Surface Methodology. The results showed that the adsorption efficiency of ammonium by dry alkali modification bentonite was the best in three modified methods; the next was that of thermal modification. The crystalline structure of bentonite was significantly changed with dry alkali modification. Na2SiO3 and Na2AlSi3O8(OH) were achieved by bentonite with powder NaOH modification. The increase in the mole ratio of exchangeable cations indicated that the adsorption efficiency of ammonium increased; while the layer spacing of bentonite expanded with the amount of the adsorbed water and hydrated water increased by thermal modification. In multivariables interaction effects (holding time, calcination temperature, pH, dosage), the most significant factors were calcination temperature and dosage.

Abstract:Absorption refrigeration has gained more and more application with its many advantages,such as energy-saving and environmental protection.The absorption characteristics enhancement mechanism of additives and nano-particles on lithium bromide aqueous solution and ammonia water and the development of experimental study are summarized and analyzed.The mass and heat transfer coefficients of the absorber are low,which causes that the refrigeration efficiency of the system is low.In order to solve the problem,many researchers have studied the effects of additives and nano-particles on absorption through experiments,then taken measures to increase the efficiency of mass and heat transfer.The experiment mainly includes the following aspects:surface tension experiment,static pool experiment,falling film experiment,blister absorption experiment of ammonia water.All experimental results show that additives and nano-particles can improve the heat and mass transfer performance of lithium bromide aqueous solution and ammonia water in the absorber.The study will have great help to improve the efficiency of absorption refrigeration system,and also lay the foundation for the application of the technology.

Abstract:Two kinds of activated carbons modified by Na+ impregnation after pre-treatments involving oxidation by nitric acid or acidification by hydrochloric acid (denoted as AC/N-Na and AC/HCl-Na, respectively), were used as adsorbents to remove NH+4-N. The surface features of samples were investigated by BET, SEM, XRD and FT-IR. The adsorption experiments were conducted in equilibrium and kinetic conditions. Influencing factors such as initial solution pH and initial concentration were investigated. A possible mechanism was proposed. Results showed that optimal NH+4-N removal efficiency was achieved at a neutral pH condition for the modified ACs. The Langmuir isotherm adsorption equation provided a better fit than other models for the equilibrium study. The adsorption kinetics followed both the pseudo second-order kinetics model and intra-particle kinetic model. Chemical surface analysis indicated that Na+ ions form ionic bonds with available surface functional groups created by pre-treatment, especially oxidation by nitric acid, thus increasing the removal efficiency of the modified ACs for NH+4-N. Na+-impregnated ACs had a higher removal capability in removing NH+4-N than unmodified AC, possibly resulting from higher numbers of surface functional groups and better intra-particle diffusion. The good fit of Langmuir isotherm adsorption to the data indicated the presence of monolayer NH+4-N adsorption on the active homogenous sites within the adsorbents. The applicability of pseudo second-order and intra-particle kinetic models revealed the complex nature of the adsorption mechanism. The intra-particle diffusion model revealed that the adsorption process consisted not only of surface adsorption but also intra-particle diffusion.
Preparation of natural rubber based semi-IPNs superabsorbent and its adsorption behavior for ammonium

Abstract:In this study, a natural rubber (NR) based amphiphilic semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) superabsorbent hydrogel was designed and synthesized with natural rubber-graft-poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) [NR-g-P(AA-co-AM)] network and linear poly (diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDADMAC). Through a series of characterization and test, the structure, morphology, thermal properties, biodegradation, and swelling properties of NR-g-P(AA-co-AM)/PDADMAC were determined. Subsequently, NR-g-P(AA-co-AM)/PDADMAC was used for ammonium adsorption to remove ammonium nitrogen in aqueous solution. The adsorption behavior of the absorbent was also studied. Results showed that the maximum water absorbency of NR-g-P(AA-co-AM)/PDADMAC was 112.04 ± 6.55 g/g and water retention capacity of soil with the superabsorbent was 115.62 ± 2.08%. The NH4+ adsorption quickly reached equilibrium and the maximum adsorption capacity was 13.02 mmol g-1 calculated from Langmuir isotherm model. The results suggest that the product is efficient for ammonium removal and can be used as water-retaining agents.

Abstract:Ammonia nitrogen, a refractory pollutant in the water environment, poses a significant threat to ecological balance and human health. Adsorption has emerged as an effective method for its treatment due to the versatility of adsorption materials. However, traditional adsorbents suffer from resource depletion, high costs and low efficiency. Therefore, the search for efficient, cost-effective adsorption materials is crucial for optimizing this method. In recent years, ceramsite-based adsorption materials have garnered attention as a promising solution. This review provides an overview of recent advancements in ceramsite adsorbents for ammonia nitrogen removal. The first section introduces the raw materials and the role of the main components in ceramsite preparation, followed by an analysis of the effects of sintering systems and preparation processes on the final product. Three modification methods-chemical surface modification, physical surface modification, and pore structure regulation-are then discussed to achieve efficient adsorption. In the second section, the mechanisms of ammonia nitrogen adsorption by ceramsite adsorbents are analyzed, focusing on adsorption isotherms (e.g., Langmuir and Freundlich models) and kinetics models (e.g., pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models). The mechanisms include ion exchange, surface adsorption, and pore adsorption. In the third part, the effects of ceramsite pore size, dosage, desorption, initial pH, ammonia nitrogen concentration and other cations on adsorption efficiency are analyzed, and the favorable range for adsorption is identified, which provides guidance for the preparation of high-efficiency ceramsite adsorbents. Finally, the future prospects of ceramsite adsorbents in ammonia nitrogen treatment are discussed. Ceramsite, with its wide range of raw materials, large specific surface area, controllable pore size, and potential for biofilm or modification, holds promise for effective ammonia nitrogen removal.

Abstract:The absorption reactions of NO2 into (NH4)2SO3 solution were investigated in a stirred tank reactor. The kinetic regime of the absorption reaction was identified and the effects of various experimental parameters were studied. The experimental results indicated that the absorption of NO2 into (NH4)2SO3 solution is accompanied by a fast pseudo-first-order reaction. It was found that the NO2 absorption rates were enhanced by the increasing concentration of (NH4)2SO3 but nearly remained constant if the concentration is greater than 0.1 mol/L. The absorption rates also increased with increasing the reaction temperature and the concentration of NO2 in inlet gas, but decreased as the oxygen concentration increased.

Abstract:The deep insight into the adsorption mechanism of ammonia (NH3) over acid-modified activated carbon will be of great significance to develop more efficient carbon materials for NH3 adsorption. In this work, a co-adsorption mechanism of NH3 and residual nitric acid (HNO3) on the active carboxyl site is proposed to elaborate the enhanced NH3 adsorption capacity over the acid-modified activated carbon based on both the experimental and density functional theory (DFT) results. The adsorption behaviors of NH3 over the different acid-modified activated carbon samples show that the activated carbon modified by 10 M HNO3 at 90 oC possesses the best NH3 adsorption capacity (40 mg/g), and the residual HNO3 can be observed with the release of both NOx and NH3 during the heat treatment of the used HNO3-modified activated carbon. The multiple structural characterizations reveal that the activated carbon can be oxidized and etched by HNO3 with enriched pore structure and oxygen-containing functional groups, and acidic functional groups play a key role in the improved NH3 adsorption capacity. DFT calculations further display that the carboxyl functional group can strongly interplay with NH3 or HNO3 with the lowest adsorption energy (-0.66 eV and -0.79 eV, respectively), and the co-adsorption of NH3 and HNO3 around the carboxyl functional group forms a strong circular hydrogen-bond network among NO3−, NH4+ and carbonyl and further decreases the adsorption energy (-1.63 eV). The experimental and theoretical results together demonstrate that the oxidation and etching of activated carbon by acid enrich the active surface carboxyl functional groups, and the co-adsorption of NH3 with the residual HNO3 around the carboxyl functional group through the strong circular hydrogen-bond network accounts for the enhanced NH3 adsorption capacity of the acid-modified activated carbon.

Abstract:The activated carbons (ACs) with high surface area were modified separately by using ammonia aqueous solution impregnation and microwave irradiation in an atmosphere of N2 or H2 in order to improve their adsorption properties toward CO2. The modified ACs were characterized, and the surface chemical properties of the ACs were determined separately by FTIR, Boehm titration and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods. The isotherms of CO2 on the modified ACs were measured. Results showed that after surface modification, the contents of elements C and N of the samples increased, while that of the element O of the samples decreased in comparison with the original AC. Correspondingly, the amounts of the surface basic groups of the modified ACs increased, while those of the surface acidic groups decreased as compared to the original AC. The use of microwave irradiation in an atmosphere of N2 to modify the carbon can make the total basic groups of the surfaces of the ACs be the highest among the modified ACs. As a consequence of that, the modified AC samples had higher adsorption capacities of CO2 than the original AC, and the more the surface basic groups of the ACs, the higher the adsorption capacity of the ACs for CO2. The amount adsorbed of CO2 on the modified AC by the microwave irradiation in the atmosphere of N2 was up to 3.75mmol/g at 1atm and 293K, having an increase of 28% in comparison with the original AC.
Experimental Study on Ammonia Nitrogen Adsorption Performance of Zeolite Powder

Abstract:The incidents of sudden pollution of ammonia nitrogen are happening quite frequently recently. To study the effective removal of ammonia nitrogen, using zeolite powder as an absorbent, the simulation of ammonia- nitrogen wastewater is studied systematically through investigated experiments. The effects of absorption time, ambient temperature, the original ammonia nitrogen concentration, the amount of zeolite and other factors arediscussed. Results of experiments show that the absorption performance of zeolite is good and has quick absorption rates. After 10 minutes it basically reaches the absorption equilibrium. At 10~60 °C, the range effectof temperature on absorption efficiency is rather small. Zeolite absorption of ammonia nitrogen is fitting for Freundlich absorption isotherm equation very well. R2 is 0.9977; parameter n is 1.82, which shows that the zeolite absorption of ammonia nitrogen is better, as the preferential absorbent.

Abstract:This paper presents an evaluation of the morphology of fertilizer-grade and prill-grade ammonium nitrate(V). All samples were analyzed using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tomography techniques. The XRD results revealed that despite various provenances, all samples exhibited similar Pmmm symmetry and diffraction patterns. SEM images indicated that prill ammonium nitrate(V) showed a more complex external and internal crystal structure than fertilizer-grade counterparts. Furthermore, tomography analysis revealed that each prill ammonium nitrate(V) sample demonstrated distinct porosity characteristics, including varying pore sizes and distribution patterns. Both methods confirmed that fertilizer-grade ammonium nitrate(V) in the cross-section had a pumice structure, and porous prill ammonium nitrate(V) had a rather complex structure, with a central cavity observed only in the case of Sample 4. The appearance of a central cavity can be explained by the different conditions or manufacturing processes of porous prill ammonium nitrate(V). Moreover, the fertilizer-type ammonium nitrate(V) exhibited the lowest surface-to-volume ratio of ca. 21% compared to the porous-type ammonium nitrate(V). This, together with the lowest surface area of ca. 116 mm2, confirmed the lowest absorption capacity of the fertilizer-grade ammonium nitrate(V) disclosed by the ammonium nitrate(V) producer.

Relationships between structures of surfactants and their anti-hygroscopicity performance of ammonium nitrate particles

Abstract:The coating processing condition was used for the research of coating ammonium nitrate particles by means of the surfactants as coating materials which have the same polar heads with different non-polar straight hydrocarbon tails or the same non-polar straight hydrocarbon tails with different polar heads, in order to investigate the relationships between structures of surfactants and their anti-hygroscopicity used in ammonium nitrate particles coated. Furthermore, the relationships and possibly mechanism were analyzed and discussed based on both the experimental results and the selected coating processing, basic property of materials and behaviors of material in coating processes. The experimental results indicated that, the anti-hygroscopicity performance of C16-alchol and C18-acid were best ones within the all groups of selected surfactants with polar heads. The best declines of hygroscopicity of ammonium nitrate particles coated were 29.26% for C16-alcohol and 24.0% for C18-acid. And for the later, the anti-hygroscopicity performance of C18-acid and C20-acid were best ones within the all groups of selected surfactants with longer tails, and that of C16-alcohol and C14-amine were best ones with shorter tails, their best declines were 24.0%, 20.39%, 29.26% and 18.6%, respectively. The mechanism analysis results indicated that the decline of hygroscopicity were influenced by both the coating processing condition and the material properties, such as the polarity, hydroscopicity, solublity in solves and especially the surfactivity of the used surfactants, and the later, i.e. the material properties would play an important role when the processing condition and solvent used in coating ammonium nitrate particles were fixed. Therfore, the property of coating materials which are depending on their structures and the bahaviours of coating material molecules in coating processes dominated commonly and ultimatly anti-hydroscopicity of coated ammonium nitrate particles, under a selected coating processing condition. This work provides new insights on understanding the relationship between structure of surfactants and anti-hygroscopicity performance to further improve the anti-hygroscopicity performance of ammonium nitrate particles.

Optimizing Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia via Modulating Adsorption-Desorption Dynamics with High-Entropy CuNiCoZnMn Alloy Catalysts

Abstract:NO3RR synthesis of ammonia is a complex eight-electron reaction involving multiple steps and intermediates, in which NO3- adsorption and NH3 desorption are crucial. The Cu-based high entropy quinary alloy catalyst has good surface adsorption and desorption ability for the reduction of nitric acid to ammonia. Here, the catalytic sites were coordinated by constructing CuNiCoZnMn alloys to adjust the electronic structure of the catalytic sites to facilitate the reaction of the substrate and thus optimize the whole reaction path. Based on the ternary alloy CuNiCo, the introduction of the Zn element continues to reduce the desorption energy barrier, and the introduction of the Mn element continues to enhance the initial adsorption energy so that the target product can be quickly held and released to accelerate the production of ammonia. The NH3 yield and Faraday efficiency obtained for the quinary CuNiCoZnMn alloy catalyst reached 723.7 μmol h-1 cm-2 and 96.6%, respectively, at -0.35 V vs RHE potential. The density functional theory calculations showed that the quinary CuNiCoZnMn alloy (NO3- to *NO3-) initial adsorption-free energy change and (*NH3 to NH3) NH3 desorption-free energy change are -2.50, 0.072 eV, respectively, which are significantly better than those of the ternary CuNiC and quaternary CuNiCoZn of -2.02, 0.544 eV and -1.97, 0.217 eV.
High-Performance Gas-Liquid-Solid Optofluidic Microreactor with Tio2-X-Ag@Hkust-1/Carbon Paper for Efficient Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation to Ammonia

Abstract:The low efficiency of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation to ammonia is determined by the low quantum efficiency photocatalyst and the configuration of the reactor.Therefore, a new method was adopted to introduce a gas -liquid-solid optofluidic microreactor with gas-liquid two-chambers into the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation re-action, and a novel and efficient TiO2_x-Ag@HKUST-1/ carbon paper composite membrane was successfully synthesized. The porous structure of HKUST-1/carbon paper can well adsorb N2, and the uniformly dispersed Ag and Ti3+ in the TiO2_x are bridged by O vacancies to form the Ti3+-Ov-Ag active center. These together improve the activity of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation to ammonia. The experimental results show that the TiO2_x- Ag@HKUST-1/carbon paper composite membrane can continuously reduce N2 to ammonia under visible light, and the yield can reach 10.62 mg.h-1.gcat-1and the corresponding apparent quantum yield (AQY) under 450 nm illumination reaches 2.08%, which is much higher than that of commercial TiO2(P25), HKUST-1, and also higher than most of the reported TiO2-based photocatalysts. This shows the superiority of the gas-liquid two-chambers gas-liquid-solid optofluidic microreactor in photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.This work can also be seen as a step towards the development of high-efficiency continuous photocatalytic nitrogen fixation to ammonia technology.
