Abstract:According to the research on the defect of zero sequence current and negative sequence current faulty phase selection, and the analysis of the different phase relation of zero sequence voltage and negative sequence voltage when the system has two phase fault or single phase fault, a new faulty phase selecting scheme making up of the zero sequence voltage, negative sequence voltage and positive sequence voltage is put forward in this paper. The principle is simple and can select faulty phase correctly and unfailingly, not only for the normal fault, but also for the transferring fault, and the cross over fault on double circuit tower. It meets the demand of ultra high voltage line protection.

Abstract:Based on differential currents, this paper presents a fault phase selector for the protection of double-circuit lines. After phase-sequence transformation of double-circuit lines, six phases are decoupled into six sequence vectors including the differential and common vectors, which are independent of each other. In particular, as the differential vectors are independent of system impedance, the characteristics of all kinds of differential currents and differential sequence currents for all single-line faults of parallel transmission lines are inferred. This paper takes differential current fault components as phase selectors. The principle of the fault phase is free from the influences of system parameters and fault resistance. As it is easy to obtain the fault components of the differential current and its error is small, the protection theory for double-circuit lines is better than the conventional current balance protection using phase currents or current components. The results of EMTP simulation show that the principle is accurate and effective.

Abstract:Fault phase selection is a key procedure in relaying protection of HV transmission lines. In this paper a scalar concerning superimposed line voltage and current is constructed. The theory of phase selection is based on the relation of three scalars-△T AB, △T BC, △T CA under all kinds of faults. When the relay is located on the side of weak power source (or loads), or transferred fault happens, the selector can identify the fault phases correctly. When the fault is on the end of the line, the sensitivity is higher. The theoretic analysis and ATP simulation proves it is feasible in HV transmission line.

Abstract:Zero-sequence differential protection can’t select the fault phase correctly on its own as the current differential protection,this paper puts forward a new fault phase selector of zero-sequence differential protection,uses the relations of zero-sequence and negative-sequence differential current and the magnitude of three phase line differential current.It simulates 1000 kV transmission lines with EMTP and MATLAB software,and the results verify that the fault phase selector can select the fault phase correctly and fast.

Abstract:Affected by commutation failure and fast control of line-commutated-converter (LCC) high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) inverter station, conventional phase selectors exist adaptability problems. In this paper, a novel faulted phase selector for AC lines connected to LCC-HVDC inverter station, based on the ratio of transient current energy, is proposed. Firstly, the inadaptability of conventional phase selection methods is briefly analyzed in this paper. Besides, the current relationship of the initial stage of the fault is immune to the commutation failure disturbance, and the current information of this stage is constructed as a transient energy ratio which is used to select the fault phase. On this basis, considering the weak amplitude characteristics of high-frequency signals, synchronous squeezed S-transform (SST) is introduced to process signals in this paper. PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results verify that the proposed phase selector can effectively avoid the DC-side commutation failure and control influence, achieve fast and reliable phase selection, and is weakly affected by the fault resistance, fault distance, initial fault angle, and noise interference.

Abstract:Impedance between faulted line and ground was generally regarded as a resistance,but in some cases the equivalent impedance can be reactive.The impedance loci with fault impedance seen by the protection in this condition was analyzed.Based on different mal-operation of relay,the solution scheme was given and an adaptive criterion was proposed.The simulation results show that the new adaptive relay has excellent adaptablity and selectivity,can prevent error action,illustrates a good prospect of application and extension.

Abstract:Summary form only given. A new reclosure scheme applied to parallel transmission lines with shunt reactors is proposed to improve the adaptability of the autoreclosure. Detailed analysis of the fault phase voltage is performed to derive the criteria to distinguish the temporary fault from permanent fault. For different types of ground faults, the integral of fault phase's recovery voltage is used for identifying the permanent grounded faults. For different types of cross-line ungrounded faults, the integral of the modulus of fault phase's recovery voltage is used for identifying the permanent cross-line ungrounded faults. Besides, the phase reclosure sequence principle is used for all the fault types. The performance of the proposed scheme is verified by the digital and analog simulation test for a 500-kV parallel transmission line with shunt reactors for several cases on different fault types and fault conditions. The EMTP-based and physical analog simulation results both show that the proposed scheme is effective.

Abstract:Travelling wave protection, which performs brilliantly with high operation speed, is perfectly feasible for ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission line protection. Since nearly 70% faults in UHV transmission lines are single-line to ground (SLG) faults, the cooperation of single phase tripping and auto-reclosing is the most common and effective method to isolate SLG faults and improve the stability of the power system. Among the techniques of single phase tripping, phase selection is an essential part for its contribution to select the exact faulted phase. However, traditional phase selection algorithms do not work well with traveling wave protection due to their low recognition speed. In this regard, an innovative phase selection method is presented in this paper. Firstly, reactive energies are proved to have significant differences for healthy and faulted phase respectively. On this basics, instantaneous reactive power is adopted to construct selection criterion to accelerate identification speed. Various simulation results have been conducted to validate that the proposed method is advantageous for travelling wave protection with rapid and accurate identification.

Abstract:When a single-phase fault occurs on shunt reactor compensated EHV transmission lines,the elements,which compose the recovery voltage of the opened phase after the breaker tripping,include one more resonant component under transient faults than under permanent faults,so the fault nature can be distinguished by making an integral of the recovery voltage during a fundamental frequency cycle.The criterion is simple and convenient for implementation,and it has high sensitivity.It obtains results fast,which effectively solves the problem that the fault detection time is too long using the current criterions.Simulation results prove the correctness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:The existence of fault resistance may add an additional reactive or capacitive component to the measured impedance seen by the protection. This may cause conventional quadrangular distance protection to overreach or under-reach under different system conditions. It is shown that the measured impedance locus with fault resistance seen by the protection is an arc that can be estimated by using voltages and currents measured by the protection. A novel adaptive algorithm for digital distance protection based on real-time measured impedance locus estimation is put forward. Theoretical analysis and digital simulation show that the new adaptive distance relay with enhanced resistive tolerance can overcome steady-state overreach for both phase to phase and phase to ground fault.
An Identification Method of Single-phase Permanent Fault at Transmission Lines with Shunt Reactors

Abstract:Based on the transmission characteristics of extra high voltage(EHV)transmission lines with shunt reactors,a new algorithm for calculating transition resistance through a distributed parameter model is presented.In view of the case of permanent fault where the transition resistance is basically fixed at a low value,whereas in the case of transient fault,where after the arc is extinguished,the calculated value of transition resistance immediately increases to a large value,we are enabled to distinguish the fault nature,and the extinction time of secondary arc as well.This method can work just by making use of the current of shunt reactors and the non-fault-phase at one terminal,and fault location results,and is easy to use.Electromagnetic transient program simulation results and analyses show that the method is hardly affected by fault location,load current and transition resistance,and can be applied to transmission lines with shunt reactors at one terminal and at both terminals.What’s more,the method can withstand the inaccuracy of fault location,transmission line parameters,and system frequency to some degree.

Abstract:When two-phase temporary or permanent fault or three-phase temporary or permanent fault occurred in UHVAC transmission line with shunt reactor, the characteristics of differential mode current of shunt reactor in fault phase is analyzed in detail. After the three-phase tripping out at both ends of the transmission line, for temporary fault since the arc blowout at the fault point there is only the decaying periodic component in the differential mode current of shunt reactor, and for permanent fault there is only decaying DC component in the differential mode current of shunt reactor. Utilizing such a characteristic of the differential mode current of shunt reactor, it is possible to propose a new criterion that only suits to the identification of phase-to-phase fault characteristic during the three-phase adaptive reclosure, and this criterion can be realized by using the current in the shunt reactor current at one end and the moment of arc blowout can be judged as well. A lot of ATP/EMTP based simulation results show that using the proposed method the fault type can be distinguished rapidly and accurately, and basically the recognition is not affected by such factors as fault position, transition resistance, sampling frequency, load current, the moment when the fault occurred, the moment when the circuit breaker tripped out, and the moment of arc blowout at the fault point, besides, the proposed method is suitable for the transmission lines connected with shunt reactors at single end or both ends.

Abstract:This paper presents a new principle of fault analyzing based on initial current traveling waves and a new algorithm of fault detection and fault phase selection based on the wavelet transforms. Through comparing the amplitudes of module maxima of wavelet transform in different scales, the fault can be detected. Through matching the characteristics of different fault types, the fault phase can be identified. This new approach of fault detection and fault phase selection, including the new principle and new algorithm, is specially designed for the ultra-high-speed protective relaying, which is based on the traveling waves. The use of the new approach provides an attractive potential solution to the long-standing problems of accurate and fast fault detection and fault phase selection. Extensive theoretical studies and simulations using EMTP have proved that the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed new approach.

Abstract:In modern electrical power distribution systems, the effective operation of inverter-based arc suppression devices relies on the accuracy of faulty phase selection. In the traditional methods of faulty phase selection for single-phase-to-ground faults (SPGs), power frequency-based amplitude and phase characteristics are used to identify the faulty phase. In the field, when a high-resistance SPG occurs in the system, traditional methods are difficult for accurately identifying the faulty phase because of the weak fault components and complicated process. A novel realizable and effective method of faulty phase selection based on transient current similarity measurements is presented when SPGs occur in resonantly grounded distribution systems in this paper. An optimized Hausdorff distance matrix (MOHD) is proposed and constructed by the transient currents of three phases’ similarity measurements within a certain time window of our method. This MOHD is used to select the sampling time window adaptively, which allows the proposed method to be applied to any scale of distribution systems. Firstly, when a SPG occurs, the expressions for the transient phase current mutation in the faulty and sound phases are analyzed. Then, the sampling process is segmented into several selection units (SUs) to form the MOHD-based faulty phase selection method. Additionally, the Hausdorff distance algorithm (HD) is used to calculate the waveform similarities of the transient phase current mutation among the three phases to form the HD-based faulty phase selection method. Finally, a practical resonant grounded distribution system is modeled in PSCAD/EMTDC, and the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method is compared and verified under different fault resistances, fault inception angles, system topologies, sampling time windows and rates of data missing.

Abstract:Through the analysis of different fault characteristics under single-phase earth fault for transmission lines with shunt reactors,apermanent fault identification method based on least squares waveform correlation is presented.The equivalent model of voltage recover interval of transient fault is used as a reference prototype,the similarity of calculated value and measured value on fault-phase terminal voltage is obtained with time domain waveform correlation method,and then identifies the fault nature by continuously comparing objective proportional coefficient constructed with the similarity to setting value.The method can identify fault nature just with the current of shunt reactors and single-terminal data of non-fault-phase.Lots of simulation results show that the proposed method can exactly distinguish permanent fault from transient fault on different conditions,even in comparatively large model parameter errors case can achieve the goal of reliable misalignment in permanent fault.

Abstract:In order to verify the correctness of the principle and functions of fault line selector based on current traveling wave, this paper reports the results of tests under all kinds of really grounded fault conditions in distribution systems simulated by transient relay testing device. Those tests include high-speed sampling and communication, selecting the exact fault line and alarming under different current transformer configurations, different ways of neural grounded systems, and different fault resistances. Results show that the principle of the device is correct and its functions meet the requirement of design.

Abstract:The rapidity of conventional switching into fault (SIF) protection is decelerated greatly because of the serious transient of unloaded switching in ultra high voltage (UHV) or extra high voltage (EHV) transmission line. Theoretical analysis shows that the impedance angles measured between switching into normal and fault state are different. Based on the comparison of the harmonic noise level under these conditions, a novel scheme of unloaded SIF protection with an assistant speedy distance relay is put forward in this paper. Analysis and mass EMTP simulation show that the scheme can distinguish fault state from normal line quickly and accurately. Accordingly it possesses a good engineering application prospect for its sensitivity and rapidity.

Abstract:The paper proposes faulted feeder selector in power distribution system with neutral non-effectively grounded. At first, the paper presents basic principle of single-phase-to-ground fault feeder selection based on traveling waves, which compares amplitude and polarity of the initial current traveling waves in all feeders. Then the implementation scheme, including hardware design and software flowchart is presented. At last field application of faulted feeder selector is introduced. The field operation results validated the correctness of faulted feeder selector based on transient traveling wave.
