Earlier reports have discussed the observation of retinal lesions induced in primates (rhesus monkeys) by the uv outputs of kryptonand argon-ion lasers (350-360 nm). However, the occurrence of such lesions proved to be isolated incidents, and no combination of exposure parameters was found which reproducibly yielded uv laser induced retinal damage in test subjects. Nevertheless, the possibility that retinal damage might result from the 325-nm output of helium cadmium (He-Cd) lasers was recognized because of a small transmission window in the ocular media centered near this wavelength.
