Abstract:In their retrospective case series, Chan et al detail the clinical course of 8 patients who sustained photokeratitis after exposure to a decorative display of UV lights during an outdoor public event. The authors describe the presenting symptoms of photokeratitis, including pain, photophobia, redness, and tearing. Fortunately, visual acuity was minimally affected, and all patients fully recovered after supportive treatment. This report demonstrates the critical need to increase public awareness of and regulation for the potential deleterious effects of UV light exposure on the eye. Patients have been exposed to UV light during activities such as prolonged outdoor recreation, use of germicidal lamps, and exposure to decorative UV bulbs.
