Abstract:Abstract Solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting systems are highly promising for converting solar energy into clean and sustainable chemical energy. In such PEC systems, an integrated photoelectrode incorporates a light harvester for absorbing solar energy, an interlayer for transporting photogenerated charge carriers, and a co-catalyst for triggering redox reactions. Thus, understanding the correlations between the intrinsic structural properties and functions of the photoelectrodes is crucial. Here we critically examine various 2D layered photoanodes/photocathodes, including graphitic carbon nitrides, transition metal dichalcogenides, layered double hydroxides, layered bismuth oxyhalide nanosheets, and MXenes, combined with advanced nanocarbons (carbon dots, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and graphdiyne) as co-catalysts to assemble integrated photoelectrodes for oxygen evolution/hydrogen evolution reactions. The fundamental principles of PEC water splitting and physicochemical properties of photoelectrodes and the associated catalytic reactions are analyzed. Elaborate strategies for the assembly of 2D photoelectrodes with nanocarbons to enhance the PEC performances are introduced. The mechanisms of interplay of 2D photoelectrodes and nanocarbon co-catalysts are further discussed. The challenges and opportunities in the field are identified to guide future research for maximizing the conversion efficiency of PEC water splitting.

Abstract:Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is considered one of the most promising materials for PEC water splitting under solar light. However, the drawbacks of lower charge transfer efficiency and slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics seriously limited the practical application of α-Fe2O3 photoanodes. In this work, a multilayer structure modified α-Fe2O3 photoanode is proposed. Firstly, the In2O3 nanolayers were loaded onto the surface of α-Fe2O3 nanorods, significantly increasing the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation activity. The heterojunction form by the In2O3 passivation layer with α-Fe2O3 effectively promotes charge separation. Next, an electrodeposition method deposited a nanosheet combining ultrathin non-crystalline Co(OH)x and Mn3O4 nanocrystals (Co–Mn) on the α-Fe2O3 thin film. As an efficient co-catalyst, the Co–Mn nanosheets assisted the performance of α-Fe2O3 PEC water oxidation. The optimized α-Fe2O3–In2O3–Co(OH)x-Mn3O4 photoanode produces a high photocurrent density of 6.5 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE), a maximum IPCE of 57.9% at 400 nm can reach.

Herein, a versatile coupling strategy was developed to engineer atomically dispersed Ni-N4 sites coordinated with an axial direction oxygen atom (Ni-N4-O) incorporated between oxygen evolution cocatalyst (OEC) and semiconductor photoanode, boosting the photogenerated electron-hole separation and thus improving PEC activity. This state-of-the-art OEC/Ni-N4-O/BiVO4 photoanode exhibits a record high photocurrent density of 6.0 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE), over approximately 3.97 times larger than that of BiVO4, achieving outstanding long-term photostability. From X-ray absorption fine structure analysis and density functional theory calculations, the enhanced PEC performance is attributed to the construction of single-atomic Ni-N4-O moiety in OEC/BiVO4, facilitating the holes transfer, decreasing the free energy barriers, and accelerating the reaction kinetics. This work enables us to develop an effective pathway to design and fabricate efficient and stable photoanodes for feasible PEC water splitting application.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical water splitting offers a promising approach for carbon neutrality, but its commercial prospects are still hampered by a lack of efficient and stable photoelectrodes with earth-abundant materials. Here, we report a strategy to construct an efficient photoanode with a coaxial nanobelt structure, comprising a buried-ZrS3/ZrOS n-p junction, for photoelectrochemical water splitting. The p-type ZrOS layer, formed on the surface of the n-type ZrS3 nanobelt through a pulsed-ozone-treatment method, acts as a hole collection layer for hole extraction and a protective layer to shield the photoanode from photocorrosion. The resulting ZrS3/ZrOS photoanode exhibits light harvesting with good photo-to-current efficiencies across the whole visible region to over 650 nm. By further employing NiOOH/FeOOH as the oxygen evolution reaction cocatalyst, the ZrS3/ZrOS/NiOOH/FeOOH photoanode yields a photocurrent density of ~9.3 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode with an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of ~3.2% under simulated sunlight irradiation in an alkaline solution (pH = 13.6). The conformal ZrOS layer enables ZrS3/ZrOS/NiOOH/FeOOH photoanode operation over 1000 hours in an alkaline solution without obvious performance degradation. This study, offering a promising approach to fabricate efficient and durable photoelectrodes with earth-abundant materials, advances the frontiers of photoelectrochemical water splitting.

Abstract:Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is one of the most promising candidates for photoelectrodes in photoelectrochemical water splitting system. However, the low visible light absorption coefficient and short hole diffusion length of pure α-Fe2O3 limits the performance of α-Fe2O3 photoelectrodes in water splitting. Herein, to overcome these drawbacks, single-crystalline tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanowire core and α-Fe2O3 nanocrystal shell (ITO@α-Fe2O3) electrodes were fabricated by covering the chemical vapor deposited ITO nanowire array with compact thin α-Fe2O3 nanocrystal film using chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The J-V curves and IPCE of ITO@α-Fe2O3 core-shell nanowire array electrode showed nearly twice as high performance as those of the α-Fe2O3 on planar Pt-coated silicon wafers (Pt/Si) and on planar ITO substrates, which was considered to be attributed to more efficient hole collection and more loading of α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals in the core-shell structure than planar structure. Electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) characterization demonstrated a low interface resistance between α-Fe2O3 and ITO nanowire arrays, which benefits from the well contact between the core and shell. The stability test indicated that the prepared ITO@α-Fe2O3 core-shell nanowire array electrode was stable under AM1.5 illumination during the test period of 40,000 s.
Synergy of Ultrathin CoOx Overlayer and Nickel Single Atoms on Hematite Nanorods for Efficient Photo‐Electrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:By successively depositing ultrathin CoOx overlayer and Ni single atoms on Ti‐doped α‐Fe2O3 (Ti:Fe2O3) nanorods, the surface electrochemical and electronic properties are rationally engineered to inhibit the surface carrier recombination and accelerate the water oxidation kinetics for the improved photo‐electrochemical water splitting performance. To solve surface carrier recombination and sluggish water oxidation kinetics of hematite (α‐Fe2O3) photoanodes, herein, an attractive surface modification strategy is developed to successively deposit ultrathin CoOx overlayer and Ni single atoms on titanium (Ti)‐doped α‐Fe2O3 (Ti:Fe2O3) nanorods through a two‐step atomic layer deposition (ALD) and photodeposition process. The collaborative decoration of ultrathin CoOx overlayer and Ni single atoms can trigger a big boost in photo‐electrochemical (PEC) performance for water splitting over the obtained Ti:Fe2O3/CoOx/Ni photoanode, with the photocurrent density reaching 1.05 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), more than three times that of Ti:Fe2O3 (0.326 mA cm−2). Electrochemical and electronic investigations reveal that the surface passivation effect of ultrathin CoOx overlayer can reduce surface carrier recombination, while the catalysis effect of Ni single atoms can accelerate water oxidation kinetics. Moreover, theoretical calculations evidence that the synergy of ultrathin CoOx overlayer and Ni single atoms can lower the adsorption free energy of OH* intermediates and relieve the potential‐determining step (PDS) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This work provides an exemplary modification through rational engineering of surface electrochemical and electronic properties for the improved PEC performances, which can be applied in other metal oxide semiconductors as well.

Optimizing Charge Separation and Transport: Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting in α-Fe2O3/CZTS Nanorod Arrays

Abstract:This study explores the enhancement of α-Fe2O3 (hematite) nanorod arrays for photoelec-trochemical applications by constructing a Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) heterojunction. While α-Fe2O3 offers good stability, a low cost, and environmental benefits, its efficiency is limited by slow oxygen evolution kinetics, high carrier recombination rates, and low conductivity. By introducing CZTS, a material with strong light absorption and charge transport properties, we enhance the separation of photogenerated charge carriers, reduce charge transfer resistance, and increase the carrier concentration, thereby boosting the overall photoelectrochemical performance. The experimental results show that a modified FC-15 photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 3.40 mA/cm2 at 1.60 V vs. RHE, a substantial increase compared to 0.40 mA/cm2 for unmodified α-Fe2O3. Band gap analysis reveals a reduced band gap in the FC-15 material, enhancing light absorption and boosting the photoelectrocatalytic performance. In photoelectrochemical water-splitting tests, the FC-15 photoanode achieves a hydrogen production rate of 41.6 μmol/cm2/h, which is significantly improved over the unmodified sample at 5.64 μmol/cm2/h. These findings indicate that the CZTS/α-Fe2O3 heterojunction effectively promotes charge separation, enhances charge transport, and improves light absorption, substantially increasing photocatalytic efficiency. This heterojunction approach offers new insights and technical strategies for developing photocatalytic materials with potential applications in renewable energy.

Abstract:The photoelectrochemical application of carbon nitride is extremely exciting because of the meta-free components, low cost, nontoxicity, and appropriate band positions. To construct carbon nitride-based heterostructures, a conventional ultrasonic exfoliation method is usually used to fabricate dispersion of ultrathin nanosheets. However, the outstretched structure and the poor dispersity inevitably result in the poor interfacial contact between different materials. To solve this problem, hydrolyzed carbon nitride suspension was used as a homogeneous precursor for the fabrication of composite photoanodes. The in situ reassembly of one-dimensional nanofibers resulted in the formation of uniform and ultrathin carbon nitride nanoarchitectures on the surface of Fe2O3 nanorod arrays. Because of the strongly coupled interfaces and the deposition of Co-Pi water oxidation cocatalysts, the as-synthesized heterostructured photoanodes exhibited three-fold increased photocurrent density and good stability, compared to pristine Fe2O3. The significantly improved photoactivity of the Fe2O3/reassembled carbon nitride/Co-Pi heterostructures was ascribed to the decreased interfacial conductivity and facilitated charge separation. This material designing strategy was further used to construct TiO2/carbon nitride, ZnO/carbon nitride, and WO3/carbon nitride heterostructures. The incorporation of hydrolyzed carbon nitride could remarkably enhance the photoelectrochemical performance of these metal oxide photoanodes. Thus, this work provides a new paradigm for designing carbon nitride-based composite nanostructures for efficient and stable solar fuel production.
Core-shell hetero-phase reduced Ti–Ni–O nanotubes photoanode with enhanced optical absorption and charge transport for boosted photoelectrochemical water splitting

Abstract:Bulk-phase doping and surface oxygen-defective engineering of TiO2-based nanostructures are identified as effective routes for enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Here, we reported a reduced Ti–Ni–O nanotubes photoanode with anatase-rutile crystalline-core and oxygen vavancies amorphous-shell for boosted PEC water splitting. The core-shell hetero-phase reduced Ti–Ni–O nanotubes were fabricated through phase-structure modulation by a thermal treatment of anodized Ti–Ni–O nanotubes on Ti–Ni alloy and with one-step electrochemical reduction. Microstructure, optical and PEC measurement results confirmed effective bulk-phase Ni-doping and surface oxygen vacancies self-doping into the reduced mixed-phase Ti–Ni–O nanotubes, which enabled high capability of optical-absorption and simultaneously favored charge separation-transfer for remarkably improved the PEC water splitting. A higher photocurrent density of 1.66 mA/cm2 at 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl and solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 0.79% were achieved for the reduced Ti–Ni–O system, which was 5.35 and 5.27 times that of undoped TiO2, respectively. This work may shed an insight view on fabricating high-performance Ti-based nano-photoanodes with enhanced light harvesting and carrier kinetics for efficient PEC water splitting, through synergistic strategy of bulk-phase elements doping and surface oxygen vacancies self-doping.

Abstract:yy The decoration of n-type silicon (n-Si) with bimetallic NiFe nanoparticles has been shown to be an effective approach in achieving efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. However, the ratio of Ni/Fe was not precisely controlled in the previous studies and the respective effects of Ni and Fe on the PEC performance have not been systematically investigated. In this work, dual-source electron beam evaporation is employed to deposit NiFe nanoparticles on n-Si with precisely controlled Ni/Fe ratios. The NiFe/SiOx/n-Si photoanode records an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of 3.03 +/- 0.10% with a Ni/Fe ratio of 3:1. However, the stability of the photoanode decreases with higher Fe content, which is ascribed to the leaching of Fe catalytic sites. With the addition of Fe ions into the electrolyte, the ABPE is maintained at 3.12 +/- 0.04% and the stability is significantly improved. Our results highlight a potential method to achieve efficient and stable PEC water oxidation with this simple device architecture.

Abstract:Engineering of semiconductor nanomaterials is critical to enhance the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance for water splitting. However, semiconductors often show the low light absorption, slow charge transfer, and easy recombination of carriers, thus leading to the low catalytic efficiency. In this work, we show facile synthesis of ZnO@TiO2 core-shell nanorods (NRs) arrays modified with Au nanoparticles (NPs) as the photoelectrode for PEC water splitting. Impressively, the obtained ZnO@TiO2 (15 nm)/Au(8 nm) array shows the maximum photocurrent density of 3.14 mA/cm2 at 1.2 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), 2.6 times and 1.7 times higher than those obtained from ZnO NRs and ZnO@TiO2(15 nm) arrays. The electric-field simulation and transient absorption spectroscopy show that the Au-decorated core-shell nanostructures have an enhanced hot electron generation and prolonged decay time, indicating effective charge transfer and recombination inhibition of carriers. This work provides an efficient preparation strategy for photoelectrodes as well as great potential for the large-scale development of this technology.

Abstract:Photocatalysts with well-designed compositions and structures are desirable for achieving highly efficient solar-to-chemical energy conversion. Heterostructured semiconductor photocatalysts with advanced hollow structures possess beneficial features for promoting the activity towards photocatalytic reactions. Here we develop a facile synthetic strategy for the fabrication of Fe2 TiO5 -TiO2 nanocages (NCs) as anode materials in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting cells. A hydrothermal reaction is performed to transform MIL-125(Ti) nanodisks (NDs) to Ti-Fe-O NCs, which are further converted to Fe2 TiO5 -TiO2 NCs through a post annealing process. Owing to the compositional and structural advantages, the heterostructured Fe2 TiO5 -TiO2 NCs show enhanced performance for PEC water oxidation compared with TiO2 NDs, Fe2 TiO5 nanoparticles (NPs) and Fe2 TiO5 -TiO2 NPs.

Abstract:Serious degradation and the short photogenerated carrier lifetime for the wide-bandgap semiconductor ZnO have become prominent issues that negatively affect photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, a novel electron transport pathway was constructed by simple but effective coaxial growth of ZnO/ZnS/ZnIn2 S4 heterostructure nanoarrays to increase the carrier separation efficiency. This new photoanode fulfilled the requirements of both favorable band alignment and stability, achieving a stable photocurrent density of 1.146 mA cm-2 at 1.2 VRHE , which was approximately twice that of pristine ZnO. Detailed experimental studies revealed that the improved PEC activity was due to the lattice-matching interface coherency that activated the carrier transport pathway, giving rise to an optimized interfacial electronic structure for promoted charge separation by the built-in electric field and strengthened water oxidation activity. This design may provide a new approach to fabricating various efficient lattice-matching coherent interface photoanodes for PEC water splitting.
Charge Transfer Enhancement by Substitutional N and NiFeOOH Cocatalyst of N-TiO 2 /NiFeOOH Nanorod Photoanode for Solar Water Splitting

Abstract:The increasing demand for renewable and substantial energy has aroused the development of semiconductors for applications in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of the nitrogen-doping NiFeOOH modified TiO 2 nanorods (N-TiO 2 /NiFeOOH) as photoanode. The N-TiO 2 /NiFeOOH photoanode has the core-shell structure. The "core" is nitrogen doping TiO 2 nanorods with anatase and rutile phase while the "shell" is NiFeOOH layers. The XPS characterization presents the oxygen vacancy (O v ) increase with the substitutional N sites increase. The trends of applied bias photon-to-current efficiency are agreed with the substitutional N sites and O v atomic content. That infers that the substitutional N sites affect the O v content, which could function as the active sites for the enhanced PEC properties by increase the charge separation/injection efficiencies. After NiFeOOH modification, that leads to an enhanced photocurrent density of 3.61 mA cm −2 for the N-TiO 2 /NiFeOOH photoanode, which is 1.2 and 2.4 times larger than that of the N-TiO 2 and original TiO 2 photoanodes. The enhancement in the PEC performance and efficiency are attribute to the synergetic effect of the substitutional N doping for the defect modulation and NiFeOOH modification for the oxygen evolution reaction kinetics promotion, thus enhance the charge separation/injection efficiencies at the interface between the N-TiO 2 /NiFeOOH photoanode and the electrolyte.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has been regarded as an ideal strategy to solve the current energy crisis and realize net-zero carbon dioxide emissions, and the key for an efficient PEC process is highly active photoanode catalysts. Herein, we developed a simple hydrothermal-calcination approach to fabricate Fe2O3 nanorods (NRs) doped with Ni2+, Ca2+, and Mg2+, respectively, which exhibited improved PEC performance than bare Fe2O3 NRs. The experimental results indicate that Ni2+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ were successfully doped into the lattice of Fe2O3, which can change the electronic structure of α-Fe2O3 and thus increase the density of charge carriers and reduce charge transfer resistance. Meanwhile, abundant oxygen vacancies were induced simultaneously with the Mg-doping process, which realize the synergy promotion of elemental doping and oxygen vacancies. Therefore, the optimized Mg-doped Fe2O3 NRs exhibited the highest photocurrent density of 0.763 mA·cm–2, which is 4.86-fold higher than that of the pure Fe2O3 NRs. This work indicates that the synergy of elemental doping and oxygen vacancies is an effective approach to improve the PEC performance of Fe2O3 NRs.

Abstract:Solar driven photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC-WS) using semiconductor photoelectrodes represents a promising approach for a sustainable and environmentally friendly production of renewable energy vectors and fuel sources, such as dihydrogen (H2). In this context, titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) and iron oxide (hematite, $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$) are among the most investigated candidates as photoanode materials, mainly owing to their resistance to photocorrosion, non-toxicity, natural abundance, and low production cost. Major drawbacks are, however, an inherently low electrical conductivity and a limited hole diffusion length that significantly affect the performance of TiO$_2$ and $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ in PEC devices. To this regard, one-dimensional (1D) nanostructuring is typically applied as it provides several superior features such as a significant enlargement of the material surface area, extended contact between the semiconductor and the electrolyte and, most remarkably, preferential electrical transport that overall suppress charge carrier recombination and improve TiO$_2$ and $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ photo-electrocatalytic properties. The present review describes various synthetic methods, properties and PEC applications of 1D-photoanodes (nanotubes, nanorods, nanofibers, nanowires) based on titania, hematite, and on $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$/TiO$_2$ heterostructures. Various routes towards modification and enhancement of PEC activity of 1D photoanodes are also discussed including doping, decoration with co-catalysts and heterojunction engineering. Finally, the challenges related to the optimization of charge transfer kinetics in both oxides are highlighted.

Enhanced Solar Water Splitting by Swift Charge Separation in Au/FeOOH Sandwiched Single Crystalline Fe$_2$O$_3$ Nanoflake Photoelectrodes

Abstract:In this work, single crystalline $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ nanoflakes (NFs) are formed in a highly dense array by Au seeding of a Fe substrate by a thermal oxidation technique. The NFs are conformally decorated with a thin FeOOH cocatalyst layer. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements show that this photoanode with the $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$/FeOOH NFs rooted on the Au/Fe structure exhibits a significantly enhanced PEC water oxidation performance compared to the plain $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ nanostructure on the Fe substrate. The $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$/FeOOH NFs on Au/Fe photoanode yields a photocurrent density of 3.1 mA cm-2 at 1.5 VRHE, and a remarkably low onset potential of 0.5-0.6 VRHE in 1 M KOH under AM 1.5G (100 mW cm-2) simulated sunlight illumination. The enhancement in PEC performance can be attributed to a synergistic effect of the FeOOH top decoration and Au under-layer. While FeOOH facilitates hole transfer at the interface of electrode/electrolyte, the Au layer provides a sink for the electron transport to the back contact: this leads overall to a drastically improved charge-separation efficiency in the single crystalline $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ NF photoanode.

Abstract:Modification of semiconductor photoanodes with oxygen evolution catalyst (OEC) is an effective approach for improving photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting efficiency. In the configuration, how to increase the activity of OEC is crucial to further improve PEC performance. Herein, a ternary photoanode system was designed to enhance PEC efficiency of photoelectrodes through introducing carbon dots (CDs), NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on BiVO4 particles. Systematic research shows that NiFe-LDH serves as an OEC which accelerates oxygen evolution kinetics, while the introduction of CDs can further reduce charge transfer resistance and overpotential for oxygen evolution. Under the synergistic effect of NiFe-LDH and CDs, the photocurrent and incident photon to current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of the resulting CDs/NiFe-LDH/BiVO4 photoanode is improved significantly than those of the NiFe-LDH/BiVO4 electrode.
