Abstract:The recently reported high spectral efficiency (SE) and high-baud-rate signal transmission are all based on digital coherent optical communications and digital signal processing (DSP). DSP simplifies the reception of advanced modulation formats and also enables the major electrical and optical impairments to be processed and compensated in the digital domain, at the transmitter or receiver side. In this paper, we summarize the research progress on high-speed signal generation and detection and also show the progress on DSP for high-speed signal detection. We also report the latest progress on multi-core and multi-mode multiplexing.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) has been proved to be a successful technology recently in high speed and high spectrum-efficiency optical short-haul and access network, which enables high performances based on digital equalizations and compensations. In this paper, we investigate advanced DSP at the transmitter and receiver side for signal pre-equalization and post-equalization in an optical access network. A novel DSP-based digital and optical pre-equalization scheme has been proposed for bandwidth-limited high speed short-distance communication system, which is based on the feedback of receiver-side adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 400GE on a single optical carrier based on the highest ETDM 120-GBaud PDM-PAM-4 signal, using one external modulator and coherent detection. A line rate of 480-Gb/s is achieved, which enables 20% forward-error correction (FEC) overhead to keep the 400-Gb/s net information rate. The performance after fiber transmission shows large margin for both short range and metro/regional networks. We also extend the advanced DSP for short haul optical access networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and demonstrate a high speed multi-band CAP-WDM-PON system on intensity modulation, direct detection and digital equalizations. A hybrid modified cascaded MMA post-equalization schemes are used to equalize the multi-band CAP-mQAM signals. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrates 550Gb/s high capacity WDM-PON system with 11 WDM channels, 55 sub-bands, and 10-Gb/s per user in the downstream over 40-km SMF.

Abstract:In recent years, explosively increasing data traffic has been boosting the continuous demand of high speed optical interconnection inside or among data centers, high performance computers and even consumer electronics. To pursue the improved interconnection performance of capacity, energy efficiency and simplicity, effective approaches are demonstrated including particularly advanced digital signal processing（DSP） methods. In this paper, we present a review about the enabling adaptive DSP methods for optical interconnection applications, and a detailed summary of our recent and ongoing works in this field. In brief, our works focus on dealing with the specific issues for short-reach interconnection scenarios with adaptive operation, including signal-to-noise-ratio（SNR） limitation, level nonlinearity distortion, energy efficiency consideration and the decision precision.

Abstract:112 Gbps per wavelength, amplification free Four level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM-4) transmissions are experimentally demonstrated with advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. Two DSP architectures are investigated for Directly Modulated Lasers (DMLs): 1) the regular DSP with Feed Forward Equalization (FFE) and Decision Feedback Equalization (DFE), and 2) the enhanced DSP with Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE) equalizer. The experimental results show that with advanced DSP technologies the conventional DML can achieve 40 km transmissions with Bit Error Rate (BER) under 2.4 x 10(-4) that meets RS (544, 514) Forward Error Correction (FEC) requirement; with regular-DSP the advanced DML can achieve 40 km transmissions with BER under 3.8 x 10(-3), with stronger FEC. 112 Gbps and beyond per lambda DML based transmission is a promising low power, low-cost solution for 800 GbE or 1.6 TbE Ethernet.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) for high spectrum efficiency transmission system are investigated in both long-haul and short haul optical networks. For long-haul transmission, two different super-Nyquist WDM systems based on advanced post (receiver side) and pre (transmitter side) DSP are demonstrated and studied. A novel DSP scheme for this optical super-Nyquist filtering 9-QAM like signals based on multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ) without post filter are proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which directly recovers the Nyquist filtered QPSK to a 9-QAM like signal. This improved filtering tolerance and transmission performance are demonstrated in an 8-channel 112-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) experiment with a 25GHz-grid over 2640-km single-mode fiber (SMF). Alternatively, a novel digital super-Nyquist signal generation scheme is proposed to further suppress the Nyquist signal bandwidth and reduce the channel crosstalk without using optical pre-filtering and using. Only optical couplers are needed for super-Nyquist WDM multiplexing. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit 10 channel 32-GBaud (128-Gb/s) PDM-9-QAM signals within 25-GHz grid over 2975-km at a net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz (after excluding the 20% soft-decision FEC overhead). We extend the DSP for short haul optical transmission networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high speed CAP-64QAM system using direct modulation laser (DML) based on direct detection and digital equalizations. Decision-directed least mean squares (DD-LMS) are used to equalize the CAP-64QAM. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit up to a record 60-Gb/s CAP-64QAM over 20-km stand single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on the DML and direct detection.

Abstract:IntroductIon Over the past decade, advances in optical hardware such as external modulators, narrow-linewidth lasers and 90° hybrids have enabled DSP algorithms from wireless/copper-wire communications [1] to be applied in coherent optical communication systems. Coherent transceivers supporting 100 Gb/s per channel using polarization-multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) were announced by system vendors in 2009 and subsequently deployed in transmission systems several years later. DSP units such as chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation, polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) compensation, timing phase recovery (TPR), frequency offset estimation (FOE), as well as carrier phase estimation (CPE) are standard in commercial coherent receivers. Moving forward, 400 Gb/s and 1 terabit per second (Tb/s) per-channel transmission using 16-QAM and above were demonstrated and commercialized in 2012. Abstract:In this paper, we provide an overview of recent progress on advanced digital signal processing (DSP) techniques for high-capacity long-haul coherent optical fiber transmission systems. Not only the linear impairments existing in optical transmission links need to be compensated, but also, the nonlinear impairments require proper algorithms for mitigation because they become major limiting factors for long-haul large-capacity optical transmission systems. Besides the time domain equalization (TDE), the frequency domain equalization (FDE) DSP also provides a similar performance, with a much-reduced computational complexity. Advanced DSP also plays an important role for the realization of space division multiplexing (SDM). SDM techniques have been developed recently to enhance the system capacity by at least one order of magnitude. Some impressive results have been reported and have outperformed the nonlinear Shannon limit of the single-mode fiber (SMF). SDM introduces the space dimension to the optical fiber communication. The few-mode fiber (FMF) and multi-core fiber (MCF) have been manufactured for novel multiplexing techniques such as mode-division multiplexing (MDM) and multi-core multiplexing (MCM). Each mode or core can be considered as an independent degree of freedom, but unfortunately, signals will suffer serious coupling during the propagation. Multi-input–multi-output (MIMO) DSP can equalize the signal coupling and makes SDM transmission feasible. The machine learning (ML) technique has attracted worldwide attention and has been explored for advanced DSP. In this paper, we firstly introduce the principle and scheme of coherent detection to explain why the DSP techniques can compensate for transmission impairments. Then corresponding technologies related to the DSP, such as nonlinearity compensation, FDE, SDM and ML will be discussed. Relevant techniques will be analyzed, and representational results and experimental verifications will be demonstrated. In the end, a brief conclusion and perspective will be provided.

Abstract:The traditional methods dealing with high-speed and high-dynamic range signal suffer poor synchronization and high BER.To solve these issues,this paper proposes three new methods that include digital CDR,parallel bit-synchronization and parallel error-tolerance frame-synchronization.A detailed presentation of the system is revealed.The testing results demonstrate that the system runs steadily and the synchronization recovery has been accomplished reliably.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a low-complexity format-transparent digital signal processing (DSP) scheme for next generation flexible and energy-efficient transceiver. It employs QPSK symbols as the training and pilot symbols for the initialization and tracking stage of the receiver-side DSP, respectively, for various modulation formats. The performance is numerically and experimentally evaluated in a dual polarization (DP) 11 Gbaud 64QAM system. Employing the proposed DSP scheme, we conduct a system-level study of Tb/s bandwidth-adaptive superchannel transmissions with flexible modulation formats including QPSK, 8QAM and 16QAM. The spectrum bandwidth allocation is realized in the digital domain instead of turning on/off sub-channels, which improves the performance of higher order QAM. Various transmission distances ranging from 240 km to 6240 km are demonstrated with a colorless detection for hardware complexity reduction.

Abstract:To solve the bottleneck problem of high-speed, high-resolution real-time image transmission and processing on photoelectric theodolite, a framework of real-time image transmission based on optical fiber and FPGA + multi-core DSP processing unit is proposed, which means this design realized high-speed image transmit to multi-core DSP processing unit in real time. On this basis of that, a custom protocol of image transmission on optical fiber has been developed by using the protocol to interconnect image processing unit between various subsystems, such as displaying subsystem and recording subsystem. A collectivity design of system, hardware design and software design of system are described, especially designs of image transmission protocol and multi-core DSP processing unit, which are introduced in detail to build an experimental platform, test and analyze the system. Extensive experiments on the whole system validate that, real-time image transmission to subsystems gets rate at 2.5 Gb/s by optical fiber channel, and transmission gets rate at 3.125 Gb/s between the multi-core DSP and FPGA on multi-core DSP image processing unit. The system is stable, reliable and low error rate. It has advantages such as strong processing capacity, strong performance of anti-electromagnetism interference. This system has been applied in engineering projects.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a reverse modulation fiber-wireless system with two jointed DSP algorithms. The signal in the system is OFDM modulated millimeter wave (mm-wave) at 60GHz. In order to improve transmission of this system, the discrete Fourier transform spread (DFT-Spread) technology and the averaging of the channel frequency response (H-averaging) technology are applied. The DFT-Spread technology helps to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the OFDM signal, and the H-averaging technology helps to optimize channel estimation. This is the first time that the two kinds of technology were used together in this reverse modulation system. According to the simulation, the 22Gbit/s 16QAM-OFDM at 60GHz can be generated and transmitted for 90km fiber transmission under the soft decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold 3.8×10-3. The results show that the two jointed DSP algorithms can improve the reverse modulation system transmission performance obviously.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated transmission of a 100-Gb/s discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-spread 32-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) discrete multitone (DMT) signal in an intensity-modulation/direct-detection system utilizing a direct-modulated laser. We find that DFT-spread cannot only reduce the peak-to-average power ratio but also improve the robustness to high-frequency power attenuation and narrow-band interference in the high-speed short-reach optical communication systems. Vestigial sideband (VSB) enabled by a narrow-bandwidth tunable optical filter can be adopted to resist the power fading effect induced by the fiber chromatic dispersion after direct detection. The measured bit error ratio (BER) of 100-Gb/s VSB DFT-spread DMT signal after 20-km large effective area fiber is less than the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) limitation of3.8 ×10-3.

With this technique, SE can be increased to 4 bits/s/Hz for QPSK signals. Final y, several key problems are solved for real time OFDM signal transmission and processing. Using coherent detection, up to 100 Gbit/s 16 QAM-OFDM real-time transmission is realized.
