Abstract:Earthquake and seismic-resistant concrete structures are essential components and requirements of structural design. The performance and response of concrete structures during/after the earthquake event are significant to determine the condition of the structures as well as to identify the possibility of structural failure. The main objective is to investigate the appropriate method to evaluate the impact on the structure due to earthquakes based on closed-form solutions, and to determine its differences with the results of numerical modelling. The seismic behavior of structures is required to be designed in accordance with the minimum design requirements specified in the Standard. Seismic design, where ground behavior is considered, is presented as a significant part of design analyses, and ground movement and shaking, are associated with the ground deformation which is the primary seismic load consideration for the design of plain or reinforced concrete structures. The outcome of the longitudinal analysis provided the maximum axial and bending strain which is adopted to calculate the combined strain. These results of strain are considered with the design of concrete structures against Ultimate Limit State and Service Limit State design phases. Therefore, the results evaluate the effect of seismic design on the performance of the concrete structure.

Abstract:The design method of hybrid base-isolation is applied to Imperial Crown International Residence with the height of 72.9 meters located in Suqian city,a region of high earthquake intensity.In china,there is no specific design basis for isolated technique application in high-rise building.In this paper,performance-based seismic design method is applied to this building.In order to reach the setting target of seismic performance,combination forms is adopted in isolation floor composed of rubber bearing and viscous damping.Analysis proves the stabilized operating state of isolation floor,the obvious decreasing of seismic response of upper structure,as well as the satisfaction for the design requirements.

Abstract:Structural plans are proposed for a high-rise apartment building with 7.6m height of the first story. The particular large height makes the building become a irregular one with soft and weak story. The seismic performances of the wall-frame and pure frame plan are compared based on nonlinear time history analysis under very rear earthquake. As a result, the lateral stiffness of the first story and the torsional stiffness of the building become reasonable and acceptable, and the seismic performance of the building is improved and satisfied with the three-level criterion of the seismic code by adopting wall-frame plan.

Abstract:A frame-core wall hybrid system was applied in Zhongyu International Plaza,which exceeds the limit of the code-specification with the height of 204m.In order to guarantee the ductility of the structure,the performance-based seismic design method was adopted and its performance objectives were proposed.Through elastic analysis under frequent earthquake,elastic analysis of critical components under medium earthquake and elastic-plastic dynamic time-history analysis under rare earthquake,seismic performances of the structure and components were verified based on bearing capacity and deformation results under different levels.Structural analysis was carried out by three different calculation software to enhance the reliability of the structural design.The results indicate that the performance objectives can be well realized by proper design measures,and the structure is safe and reliable.

Abstract:The current design method in anti-seismic design code takes the structural elastic response subjected to minor earthquakes as the basis for structural design. This makes engineers tend not to pay enough attention to designing and controlling the structural failure mechanism under rare earthquakes. Thus, the seismic safety of building structures subjected to rare earthquakes is not always guaranteed. The "fail-safe" concept in anti-seismic design aims at the seismic safety, which is considered as the most important seismic performance of building structures. This concept requires engineers to fully understand damage and failure behavior of the structure to be designed. The structure under this new concept is expected to hold adequate energy-dissipating capacity and is able to survive from rare earthquakes with acceptable cost. Focusing on the rehabilitation of Wenchuan MS8.0 earthquake, the basic concepts, as well as some recent development and application of the fail-safe design are introduced. The "fail-safe" design is believed to be an effective and economical solution for improving the seismic safety of the building structures all over China and to be especially valuable for the under development regions.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of rapid socio-economic development in our country and the accelerated pace of urbanization, the construction industry has been provided with a vast space for vigorous development. With the increasing demands for building quality, the design of civil engineering structures faces higher challenges and standards. Designers, in the design process, must not only pursue the aesthetic effect of buildings but also pay more attention to the safety of structures. Seismic design has received widespread attention in today's society, as its effectiveness is directly related to the stability and durability of building structures, which in turn affects the personal safety of building users. Therefore, in the design process of civil engineering structures, designers must establish advanced seismic design concepts, making seismic performance one of the core elements of design. To achieve this goal, designers need to scientifically and reasonably determine the seismic grade of buildings by combining multiple factors such as the geological conditions of the project location, history of seismic activity, and building usage. Meanwhile, advanced seismic technologies and materials need to be adopted to ensure that building structures can effectively absorb and disperse seismic energy during earthquakes, thereby maximally protecting the safety of buildings and their users.

Abstract:Zhuanyao dwellings faced significant seismic risks in rural regions of China. Therefore, a shaking-table test was performed to explore the seismic performance of Zhuanyaos and validate the finite-element simulation results. The results showed that the damage to the pier and roof levels of Zhuanyaos was more severe after earthquakes, resulting in a noteworthy increase in the displacement responses of these two levels compared to that of the vault level. The damage to the front structure (Yaolian) and mid-pier of the Zhuanyao were more severe than the damage to the back wall and side pier, respectively, which caused a significant reduction in acceleration responses of Yaolian and mid-pier. Following the crack development, dynamic response, and field investigation, three typical collapse modes of Zhuanyaos were presented. Subsequently, the parametric analysis was conducted using a verified finite-element simulation method. The results show that using the catenary arch can reduce earthquake damage in Zhuanyaos. Increasing the width of the middle pier can improve the seismic performance of Zhuanyaos to a certain extent; however, it may exacerbate local damage to the structure. Besides, the high seismic vulnerability of Zhuanyaos stemming from an increasing thickness of overlying soil cannot be ignored.

Abstract:The seismic conceptual design has rich connotations. In this paper, seismic conceptual design is classified into two categories, strict (or traditional) conceptual design and generalized conceptual design. The concepts in the strict seismic conceptual design, which are strictly based on the definition of concept in "On Practice", can be shown as perceptual knowledge after repeated verification and practice realizing a leap, which then forms the concept. On the other hand, the concepts of generalized conceptual design are not limited to the original concepts suggested from perceptual knowledge based on the engineering practice; rather, they are based on serious and continuous rational thinking and deduction. In this paper, the seismic damage characteristics of different kinds of structures are analyzed, based on which the seismic strict conceptual design ideas based on the lessons from the earthquakes and engineering experiences as well as their rational basis are discussed and revealed(1).

Abstract:The investigation and seismic reinforcements of typical rural dwellings in Beijing have been sped up since Wenchuan earthquake in 2008.Based on the investigations of the seismic performances of typical rural dwellings in 13 districts of Beijing,the information of structure system,construction time and construction materials were summarized.Based on seismic damage characteristics of similar rural dwellings in Wenchuan earthquake,the actual seismic performances of rural dwellings in Beijing were analyzed and security risks as well as countermeasures were proposed.The research provides reference for design,construction and research of seismic reinforcements of rural dwellings in Beijing.

Abstract:Collapse safety is the most important objective of performance-based aseismic design. Buildings should have an enough safety margin to avoid collapse subjected to a severe or mega earthquake. However, current Chinese seismic design code for building structures does not provide an explicit design or a quantitative evaluation method for collapse-resistant capacity. In this paper, the collapse-resistant capacities and safety margins against collapse of multi-story reinforced concrete (RC) frames with different seismic fortification levels are quantitatively evaluated, with a collapse fragility analysis based on an incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). The influences of the axial compression ratio and the failure mode to the collapse-resistant capacity are discussed, and suggestions are proposed to improve the current design.

Abstract:Analytical fragility analyses are conducted to investigate the impact of seismic design level on the seismic performance of RC moment-resisting frame buildings designed according to the provisions of the current Chinese seismic code. Four groups of buildings of low-to-mid height (3, 5, 8, and 10 stories) are studied, each of which accounts for diverse levels of seismic design, namely, precode, low code, medium code, and high code. Fragility relationships are derived for each building using nonlinear time-history analyses with 100 real ground-motion records. The results show that the buildings designed for a higher seismic code level exhibit less fragility as improving the seismic design level leads to a raised fragility median and a reduced fragility dispersion. Data on the reference seismic hazards with the probabilities of exceedance of 10 and 2-3% in 50 years show that almost all the buildings can satisfy the performance requirements of reparability and no collapse, respectively. However, the damage limitation performance objective, which is associated with 63.2% in 50-year hazard, cannot be satisfactorily achieved by medium-code and high-code buildings. The enhancement of structural resistance caused by the improvement of seismic design level is counteracted by the simultaneously increased seismic action; therefore, the limit-state probabilities of the buildings at the corresponding reference earthquakes are not decreased but increased accordingly. The current Chinese seismic design code seems conservative because the buildings show marginal potential of suffering serious damages endangering life when subjected to the seismic hazard level higher than it was designed for. Thus, it is possible to account for larger anticipated nonlinear behavior in the definition of seismic design force. (C) 2017 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract:The Bucking-Restrained Braces(BRBs) can undergo fully-reversed axial yield cycles without loss of stiffness and strength,whose seismic energy dissipation ability is superior.The additive damping ratio that BRBs impart to the structure is large,which must be considered in seismic performance design.The conventional seismic performance design is based on elasto-plastic inter-story displacement angle,the structure will possibly be unsafe because the total equivalent damping ratio of the structure is usually overrated.Based on the elastic demand spectrum and elasto-plastic demand spectrum which were established with elastic response spectrum in Chinese code for seismic design of buildings(GB50011-2001),a seismic performance design method based on ductility was put forward.In the design method,to meet the seismic performance objective,the braces will be installed,the section area of braces will be rectified or the common steel braces will be replaced by buckling-restrained braces.
Design of RC Frame Structure with Energy-Dissipated Braces in Suqian Education Building

Abstract:Suqian Education Building, which locates in a region of high earthquake intensity with basic designed acceleration of ground motion of 0.3g, is designed by the method of energy-dissipation earthquake-reduction in this paper. The energy-dissipation braced frame structure system is used to replace the ordinary frame-shear wall structure system, the optimum number and location of the energy-dissipated braces in this building are studied. Calculation results of the nonlinear time-history analysis by SAP2000N software show that, the energy-dissipation braced frame structure can satisfy the requirements of Code for seismic design of buildings, possess higher safety under seldom occurring earthquake, and has excellent aseismic behaviors. The design method suggested in this paper can be utilised for the design of similar projects in the region of high earthquake intensity.

Abstract:The design process of the 100 m high reinforced concrete masonry building in China was firstly presented, deformation check calculation under earthquake action by mode-superposition response spectrum method and time-history analysis method were detailed and deformation under wind load was also checked. Then elastic-plastic deformation under earthquake action was checked by time-history analysis method and pushover analysis method with both under uniform load and reverse triangle load. The conclusion is construct 100 m high office building built in Fortification intensity 6 by reinforced concrete masonry is feasible. Then the building was redesigned as built in fortification 7, the same check was performed as that have been done in fortification 6, it is feasible too.
