Abstract:This note corrects two errors in our previous paper ( Li et al 2008 Smart Mater. Struct. 17 065036) in which the active vibration control of beams treated with active constrained layer damping (ACLD) was studied analytically. The equation of motion of the whole beam/ACLD system is deduced again using Hamilton's principle with the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Numerical results are recalculated and conclusions similar to those of Li et al ( 2008 Smart Mater. Struct. 17 065036) can also be drawn.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part D: Journal of Automobile Engineering, Ahead of Print. This paper proposes a novel integrated path following control scheme for a 4-Wheel Independent Drive (4WID) autonomous vehicle that can adaptively change its mechanism according to the driving conditions. The proposed integrated system handles the lateral steering controller, longitudinal speed, and yaw moment controls considering tire force capacity of each corner. For the lateral controller, the cornering stiffness uncertainties and the transient performance are considered and combined into an H∞ robust controller based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) theory. A super-twisting sliding mode controller (STSMC) based longitudinal controller is designed to deal with disturbances and suppress chattering. When encountering extreme conditions, the active yaw moment controller with hierarchical structure is adaptively activated to prevent large deviation from the reference path and maintain the stability of vehicle. For the tire force allocation, an optimization algorithm is proposed, which has flexible equality constraints to coordinate the longitudinal and lateral motions according to the driving conditions. Simulations based on Carsim-Simulink co-simulation platform show that the proposed method is effective and has excellent performance in both normal and extreme driving conditions.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to solve the combined problem of input–output decoupling and robust control of the four-wheel steering vehicles. A more practical three-degree-of-freedom systems covering longitudinal, lateral and yaw motions are used to improve the safety and steerability while uncertainties and external disturbances are considered. A novel decoupling conception Attenuating Diagonal Decoupling and a new index Coupling Attenuation Index are introduced and the system is divided up into two systems with a special structure. The first system is caused by uncertainties and disturbances and the second system is a certain system coupling with the first one. A control scheme composed of a coupling attention controller and a decoupling controller are explored. The influences of the uncertainties and disturbances on the output are attenuated under the coupling index by the coupling attention controller designed for the first system while the input–output decoupling is achieved by employing the decoupling controller designed for the second system. Furthermore, we prove in theory that the input–output decoupling and robust control are both established for the closed-loop system of the control scheme and the primordial vehicle system. Besides these works, a switching law is introduced such that the above excellent performances are realizable in four-wheel steering vehicles with conventional steering interfaces. Simulations show that even with a large velocity varying range, the decoupling and robust performances are guaranteed simultaneously, i.e. the handling stability and steerability are improved.

Abstract:A control strategy with four controllers is presented to overcome the dilemma of enhancing the robustness or decoupling for four-wheel-steering (4WS) vehicles with uncertainties and disturbances. Influences of steering system, uncertainties and disturbances on the traction system are attenuated by the first controller such that traction and steering systems are controlled separately. Robustness of the steering system is ensured by the second controller. Attenuating diagonal decoupling (ADD) is established by the remaining two controllers: coupling caused by uncertainties is rejected and diagonal decoupling is obtained. Simulations show that decoupling with better robustness is obtained.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the path-tracking controller design for autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs) using four-wheel steering (4WS) and direct yaw-moment control (DYC) systems. In order to deal with the parametric uncertainties, a linear parameter-varying (LPV) H∞ controller is designed as the high-level controller to generate the front and rear wheel steering angles and external yaw moment based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. The lower-level controller is designed for torque allocation between the left and right side wheels to yield the desired total longitudinal force and external yaw moment utilizing weighted least square (WLS) allocation algorithm. To test the performance of the proposed path-tracking controller, numerical simulations are carried out based on a high-fidelity and full-vehicle model constructed in CarSim. Simulation results show that the LPV/H∞ controller has better path-tracking performance than the fixed gain H∞ controller. To show the superiority of 4WS+DYC control system, the contrast simulation is performed based on LPV/H∞ controller. Simulation results indicate that 4WS+DYC control system has better path-tracking performance and handling stability than active front steering (AFS), AFS+DYC and 4WS control systems.

Abstract:An four wheel steering (4WS)feedback contrlol system that simultanelusly achieves both body sideslip angle and yaw rate responses always desirable regardless of changes in vehicle dynamics.Quantitative feedback theory (QFT)is offered as the main tool for designing the control law.Inverted decoupling is also employed to make multivariable quantitative feedback design easier.Varilus nonlinear analyses are carried ut and show that the proposed comtrol system is a robust decoupling controller which not only makesd body sideslip angle and yaw rate of the vehicle track the desired reference input sigmals respectively,byt also satisfies the rrequirement of robustness for the control system.The results also indicate that the contral system can make it available to realize ideal lateral steering dynamics tracking for vehicles.
