Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) show several attractive features superior to traditional semiconductor LEDs for visible light communication (VLC). This paper experimentally tests and models the radiation pattern of a bent OLED panel for the first time. Different from a Lambertian radiation pattern, we propose an improved analytic mixed Gaussian model to describe the rotational radiation asymmetry, whose parameter values are found by applying an expectation-maximization algorithm for curve fitting with measurements. The OLED radiation pattern is observed to show strong directionality along the bent axes. Its impact on VLC channel characteristics is further studied. Compared with the Lambertian source, the OLED source is more flexible in radiation pattern control and shows advantages in smaller root mean square delay spread and optical path loss.

Abstract:This paper describes woven fabrics made from polymer optical fibers (POF), which are treated with a CO2 laser so that the resultant surface notches on the POFs facilitate side emission of light. The transmission and side-emitting behavior of POF with surface notches are studied in term of the variation in bending curvatures, which is related to end-usage of the woven fabrics as flexible displays, wearable phototherapy devices and fashion accessories. The measured power of transmission of light from the POF rapidly decreases with increasing bending curvature. However, the measured power of side-emission of light from the notched POFs remains almost constant at various bending curvatures within the experimental range. Theoretical analysis of the light propagation in a notched POF is conducted, which illustrates that more light is reflected from one side of the notch when the bending curvature is increased hence the transmission of the light is decreased. The theoretical and experimental results reach a good agreement.
The Near-field Radiation Pattern of an OLED Panel and Its Application in Detection

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) show several attractive features superior to traditional semiconductor LEDs, especially on flexibility. In this paper, we model the near-field radiation pattern of an OLED panel for the first time. In this scenario, the OLED cannot be viewed as a point light source, and its shape and size are considered in modeling. As the OLED panel can be seen as an aggregation of massive tiny Lambertian light sources, we obtain its radiation pattern through 3-dimensional analytical integration and evaluate it numerically. We also propose a parametric mixed Gaussian model to fit its pattern and find model parameters by simulation. An application of the OLED in detection is further studied. Compared with the Lambertian source, the OLED panel has broader irradiation range and shows better performance on detection. The distance between optical source and the obstacle can be estimated by the time of arrival according to the impulse response.

Abstract:Visible light communications (VLC) can utilize light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to provide illumination and a safe and low-cost broadcasting network simultaneously. In the past decade, there has been a growing interest in using organic LEDs (OLEDs) for soft lighting and display applications in public places. Organic electronics can be mechanically flexible, thus the potential of curved OLED panels/displays devices. This paper provides unique characteristics of a flexible OLED-based VLC link in a shopping mall. We show that, for curved OLED the radiation pattern displays a symmetry, which is wider than Lambertian. A number of scenarios of VLC system with flexible OLED are analyzed. Numerical models for the delay spread and optical path loss are derived, which followed a 2-term power series model for both empty and furnished rooms. We show that using a full-circular OLED for both empty and furnished rooms offers a uniform distribution of emitted power for the same transmission link spans. The link performance using full and half-circular OLED in an empty room shows that the average optical path losses are lower by 5 and 4 dB, compared with the furnished room.

Abstract:A new transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) based on patterned polarizer using photoalignment technique has been proposed. It consists of two optical modes: optically compensated bend (OCB) and low twist nernatic modes, which have the same cell gap. Since no double cell gap structure is included in the configuration, the fabrication process could be simpler compared with conventional double cell gap transflective LCD. With the help of photoalignment technique, patterned polarizer could be obtained and domains for OCB mode and low twist nematic mode could be formed. Based on this new configuration, a transflective LCD with high brightness and high contrast could be achieved.

Abstract:Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) offer attractive alternatives to conventional inorganic devices due to their ability to be deposited over large areas on amorphous, thin fl exible substrates, for systems with lightweight, durable, and compact designs. [ 1 , 2 ] Recent work suggests that inorganic light-emitting diode (ILED) technologies can be adapted to reproduce many of these characteristics, [ 3 ] while at the same time providing performance advantages in brightness, robust operation and effi ciency. [ 3–5 ] Here we report advances in this type of ILED approach designed to enable degrees of bendability than signifi cantly exceed those previously achieved, [ 3 ] by exploiting concepts of neutral mechanical plane designs that we successfully developed for use in other fl exible inorganic device technologies in electronics [ 6 ] and photovoltaics. Abstract:In this paper, we propose a technique to enable efficient and rigorous modeling of light emission in planar organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) composed of an arbitrary number of layers with different permittivity (including metals of a complex permittivity). The effects of the change of exciton radiative decay rate are explicitly included in the simulation. The numerical implementation of the technique is comprehensively discussed through an illustrative example. By using the proposed method, a bottom emitting OLED with a thick glass substrate is rigorously analyzed. The calculated results show a good agreement with the experimental results. The proposed method is efficient and well suited for optimizing OLEDs with complicated device structures. As a demonstration, we optimize the two-unit tandem top-emitting OLEDs with three types of charge generating layer. The results and design guidelines are given and discussed in detail.

Abstract:Although flexible perovskite solar cells have made extensive progress, there is a lack of investigation on the performance of flexible perovskite solar cells under bending state. Here, two-dimensional models of flexible perovskite solar cells have been performed to reveal the effect of bending angles and directions for the first time. Simulated results are in good agreement with experimentally reported data, validating the accuracy of our model. To optimize mechanical and optical performance under bending state, silica subwavelength array is embedded on the surface of the flexible substrate. Hence, the current density of flexible perovskite solar cells has been improved by 7.3% at downwards bending 60° and 1.9% at upwards bending 60°. Our work provides a guide for the design of efficient flexible perovskite solar cells under bending state.

Abstract:We report a flexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED) based on transparent polyimide (PI) substrate with 3-D photonic structure, which shows a maximum gain factor of similar to 1.7 for current efficiency at large viewing angle. The PI substrate is a replicate from glass carrier with hexagonal closely-packed convextruncated- cone array. Green OLEDs are fabricated on the planar surface of the PI substrate before being mechanically de-bonded from the glass template. The proposed OLEDs exhibit excellent angular optical properties including stable CIE coordinates with Delta x = -0.006 and Delta y = 0.002 as the viewing angle varies from 0 degrees to 50 degrees. Surface scattering effect of the 3-D photonic structure eliminates the periodic distortion phenomenon in electroluminescence spectrum of flexible OLEDs. (C) 2017 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Light leakage was observed evidently when the panel was bent following the uniform circular arc curvature profile due to the residual stress. By simulation and experiment, we found that the curved panel stress and leakage can be significantly minimized when the uniform profile was modified into the un-uniform profile, which is meaningful to guide the curved LCDs design and manufacture.

Abstract:In this paper, a light-induced bending model is proposed to simulate the bending deflection and stress distribution of certain photochromic liquid crystal elastomer, basing on the simple beam theory. An optical bending moment is applied to replace the effect of light. As a result, the stress distribution along the thickness is nonlinear, with two or three zero-stress planes. A two-dimensional finite element analysis is further implemented to analyze the bending behavior and the stress distribution.

Abstract:Out-coupling of light from organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) is a significant challenge for the application of OLEDs in solid state lighting. Most of the light is trapped in the stratified thin film structure and the glass substrate. In this study, an optical model is developed to simulate the optical electrical field for OLEDs with a stratified structure based on the dipole source term and transfer matrix approach. The exciton distribution is also considered in the proposed model. OLEDs with weak microcavity are selected to evaluate the model. Calculation of the electroluminescence spectrum, device efficiency as well as the angular dependence is shown to have a good agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, by using the weak microcavity design, an OLED of more than 70% improved efficiency is achieved.

Organic light‐emitting devices (OLEDs), satisfying the criteria exactly, have been considered the most promising next‐generation display and lighting technique. In particular, an OLED based on flexible substrate enables the device to be applied to curved displays, electronic newspapers, wearable displays, and conceptual lighting panels, has been always in the spotlight both in science and industry. Great advances on flexible OLEDs (FOLEDs) have been made over the past three decades. The fundamental elements of FOLEDs including substrates, electrodes, fabrication and encapsulation techniques, as well as the strategies of efficiency improvement are discussed herein. Moreover, emerging electrodes such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, metal nanowire network and their composite, flexible perovskite light emitting devices, and stretchable light emitting devices are also considered. Finally, the future challenges and prospects for these devices are put forward.

Abstract:Considerable progress has been made in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to achieve high external quantum efficiency (EQE), among which the dipole orientation of OLED emitters has a remarkable effect. In most cases, EQE of the OLED emitter is theoretically predicted with only one orientation factor to match with corresponding experiments. Here, we develop a distribution theory with three independent parameters to fully describe the relationship between dipole orientations and power densities. Furthermore, we propose an optimal experiment configuration for measuring such distribution parameters. Measuring the unpolarized spectrum can dig more information of dipole orientation distributions with a rather simple way. Our theory provides a universal plot of the OLED dipole orientation, paving the way for designing more complicated OLED structures.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes ( OLEDs) are solid state light emitting devices. They have broad prospects in the field of wearable devices owing to their flexibility nature, low driving voltage and low power consumption. Small to medium size OLED displays have already been commercialized. Large OLED TVs and OLED lightings have also emerged in real ap-plications. We review the most focused issues as well as the main progress in the field of flexible OLED technology in the recent years. The developing trends of flexible substrate material, flexible thin film transistor material, flexible OLED emit-ting layer and flexible thin film encapsulation layer are summarized. We also introduce some emerging flexible device fabri-cation technologies, such as flexible fabric substrate, polymer fibre based light emitting cell, the symmetric panel stacking device structure and slot-die coating technology. Lastly, we look to the prospect of the flexible OLED materials and devices technology.

Curved Mirror Arrays for Light Extraction in Top-Emitting Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:The light outcoupling efficiency of a top-emitting organic light-emitting diode (OLED) is only about 20%, and the majority of the light is trapped in the waveguide modes and surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes. Extracting the trapped modes can reduce the device power consumption and improve the operating lifetime. In this study, we demonstrate a top-emitting OLED structure with a dielectric spacer to suppress the SPP mode and with a patterned back mirror to extract the waveguide modes. We examine and compare several curved mirror arrays and conclude that a micromirror array (μMA) can efficiently extract the waveguide modes while minimizing the absorption loss. The optimized μMA device with a semi-transparent top electrode shows a 36% external quantum efficiency, 2 times higher than the referenced device. This optical design can be easily incorporated into a top-emitting device and has a great potential for displays and lighting applications.

Improving the Bending Resistance of Double-Layer Printed Flexible OLEDs with PEDOT: PSS-PEO Composite HIL Films

Abstract:Flexible organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are expected to have excellent device performance and mechanical robustness in many areas, such as wearable electronics and display devices. For the traditional materials of OLED anode, indium tin oxide (ITO) is undoubtedly the most mature transparent conductive electrode available. However, the brittle and rigid nature of ITO severely limit the development of flexible OLED (FOLED). In this work, a solution blending film consisting of poly (3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) and poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) was used as a hybrid hole injection layer, where PEO polymer in the composite films can greatly improve the bending resistance of device. The printed FOLEDs doped with PEO exhibit impressive mechanical durability, maintaining 80.4% of its maximum external quantum efficiency after 1000 bends at a radius of curvature of 10 mm, compared to 46.3% for the counterpart without PEO doping.

Abstract:Electrical characteristics of bilayer organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are analytically modeled based on a band diagram analysis. Two working regions, a low-injection (LI) region and a high-injection (HI) region, are proposed for operations of a general heterolayer OLED according to numerical solutions of OLED equations. Under the LI case, a diffusion-based current-voltage formulation is developed, with significant impacts from defect states. For HI operations, a drift-based current-voltage relationship is formulated incorporating the field-dependent carrier mobility of amorphous materials. The models' validity is demonstrated on the measured data of fabricated OLEDs.
