Abstract:Our world is rapidly changing, and swiftly evolving towards so-called “smart worlds”. The smart worlds starting with smart things such as the smart objects, smart city, smart manufacturing, and smart systems, will eventually encompass all aspects of the cyber, physical, social and mental world. A cyber-enabled completely new digital space featured with ubiquitous interconnections, integrations and interactions of physical, social, mental and other spaces will continuously bring out more and more changes. Cyberspace is actually the combinational outcome of various technologies including computers, communications, materials, intelligence and studies in perception, cognition, biology, sociology, etc., as well as advanced computing like the Internet/Web, pervasive networks, ubiquitous sensing and computing, the internet of things, the cloud, big data and so forth. These smart worlds are set to be the next important stage in human history. We have to be aware of the essential problems and crucial issues affecting in building truly smart worlds that benefit humanity, and simultaneously safeguard the natural environment for sustainable development and evolution. Therefore, this is the time to foresee future trends and identify what the grand challenges for smart worlds are. This Special Section in IEEE ACCESS has ten papers, and a brief summary about each paper is presented as follows.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed numerous technical breakthroughs in electronics, computing, sensing, robotics, control, signal processing, and communications. These have significantly advanced the state of applications of intelligent transportation systems. More recently, as one leading effort toward the cyber-physical-social system, the concept of intelligent transportation spaces was proposed to further improve the vehicles, traffic, and transportation safety, efficiency and sustainability. ITSp integrate not only various ITS modules, but also pedestrians, vehicles, roadside infrastructures, traffic management centers, sensors, and satellites. With distributed and pervasive intelligence, ITSp clearly impose some stringent requirements on the information exchange among all entities within the ITSp, in terms of the information availability, reliability, fidelity, and timeliness. These requirements, together with the high mobility of vehicles and the highly variable network topology, make the communications and networking for ITSp very challenging. This article will introduce the concept of ITSp and analyze possible communication technology candidates for ITSp. Further discussions will also be provided at the end of this article.

Abstract:Today's cities face many challenges due to population growth, aging population, pedestrian and vehicular traffic congestion, water usage increase, increased electricity demands, crumbling physical infrastructure of buildings, roads, water sewage, power grid, and declining health care services. Moreover, major trends indicate the global urbanization of society, and the associated pressures it brings, will continue to accelerate. One of the approaches to assist in solving some of the challenges is to deploy extensive IT technology. It has been recognized that cyber-technology plays a key role in improving quality of people's lives, strengthening business and helping government agencies serve citizens better. In this white paper, we discuss the benefits and challenges of cyber-technologies within "Smart Cities", especially the IoT (Internet of Things) for smart communities, which means considering the benefits and challenges of IoT cyber-technologies on smart cities physical infrastructures and their human stakeholders. To point out the IoT challenges, we will first present the framework within which IoT lives, and then proceed with the challenges, conclusions and recommendations.

Abstract:The ever-developing Internet of Things (IoT) brings the prosperity of wireless sensing and control applications. In many scenarios, different wireless technologies coexist in the shared frequency medium as well as the physical space. Such wireless coexistence may lead to serious cross-technology interference (CTI) problems, e.g. channel competition, signal collision, throughput degradation. Compared with traditional methods like interference avoidance, tolerance, and concurrency mechanism, direct and timely information exchange among heterogeneous devices is therefore a fundamental requirement to ensure the usability, inter-operability, and reliability of the IoT. Under this circumstance, Cross-Technology Communication (CTC) technique thus becomes a hot topic in both academic and industrial fields, which aims at directly exchanging data among heterogeneous devices that follow different standards. This paper comprehensively summarizes the CTC techniques and reveals that the key challenge for CTC lies in the heterogeneity of IoT devices, including the incompatibility of technical standards and the asymmetry of connection capability. Based on the above finding, we present a taxonomy of the existing CTC works (packet-level CTCs and physical-level CTCs) and compare the existing CTC techniques in terms of throughput, reliability, hardware modification, and concurrency.

Abstract:To support the development of internet-of-things applications, an enormous population of low-power devices are expected to be incorporated in wireless networks performing sensing and communication tasks. As a key technology for improving the data collection efficiency, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) enables simultaneous data transmission and radar sensing by reusing the same radio signals. In addition to information carriers, wireless signals can also serve as energy delivers, which enables simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). To improve the energy and spectrum efficiency, the advantages of ISAC and SWIPT are expected to be exploited, leading to the emerging technology of integrating sensing, communication, and power transfer (ISCPT). In this article, a timely overview of ISCPT is provided with the description of the fundamentals, the characterization of the theoretical boundary, the discussion on the key technologies, and the demonstration of the implementation platform.

Abstract:In response to the evolving demands of advanced business applications and the stringent performance requirements anticipated for future 6G networks, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has identified Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) as a prominent application scenario within its published framework recommendations. ISAC is designed to facilitate extensive multi-dimensional sensing capabilities, enabling the acquisition of spatial information regarding unknown objects, connected devices, and the surrounding environment. This paradigm is poised to support innovative applications, including automation, safe driving, digital twins, and the integration of artificial intelligence, thereby enhancing the perception of the physical environment.

A Survey on Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Computation

Abstract:The forthcoming generation of wireless technology, 6G, promises a revolutionary leap beyond traditional data-centric services. It aims to usher in an era of ubiquitous intelligent services, where everything is interconnected and intelligent. This vision requires the seamless integration of three fundamental modules: Sensing for information acquisition, communication for information sharing, and computation for information processing and decision-making. These modules are intricately linked, especially in complex tasks such as edge learning and inference. However, the performance of these modules is interdependent, creating a resource competition for time, energy, and bandwidth. Existing techniques like integrated communication and computation (ICC), integrated sensing and computation (ISC), and integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) have made partial strides in addressing this challenge, but they fall short of meeting the extreme performance requirements. To overcome these limitations, it is essential to develop new techniques that comprehensively integrate sensing, communication, and computation. This integrated approach, known as Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Computation (ISCC), offers a systematic perspective for enhancing task performance. This paper begins with a comprehensive survey of historic and related techniques such as ICC, ISC, and ISAC, highlighting their strengths and limitations. It then explores the state-of-the-art signal designs for ISCC, along with network resource management strategies specifically tailored for ISCC. Furthermore, this paper discusses the exciting research opportunities that lie ahead for implementing ISCC in future advanced networks. By embracing ISCC, we can unlock the full potential of intelligent connectivity, paving the way for groundbreaking applications and services.

Enabling Global Cooperation for Heterogeneous Networks via Reliable Concurrent Cross Technology Communications

Abstract:Industrial scientific medical (ISM) band has become more and more crowded due to the ever-growing size of many mainstream technologies, e.g., Wi-Fi, ZigBee and Bluetooth. Though the coexistence issue has led to severe Cross Technology Interference (CTI), it provides great opportunities to better utilize the scarce bandwidth resources. A fundamental question is how to ensure harmonious and effective operations for different networks? To exploit it, a novel global cooperation framework is proposed. In particular, our work enables reliable concurrent Cross Technology Communication (CTC) from Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi, ZigBee and Bluetooth commodity devices. Compared to existing CTC approaches, our scheme improves the communication efficiency significantly, and hence is the foundation for effective global cooperation. Based on the proposed CTC scheme, a unified Media Access Control (MAC) approach is introduced to cooperate CTC message transmission and reception for heterogeneous networks with different MACs. Three proof-of-concepts applications, e.g., global synchronization, global CTI coordination and global Location Based Service (LBS) broadcasting are discussed to fully leverage the benefits of global cooperation. Extensive evaluations show that compared with existing schemes, the proposed framework achieves 8.1 times lower synchronization error, 9 times lower packet delivery delay, and 2.7 times lower energy consumption for acquiring LBS message.

Abstract:The ever‐developing Internet of Things (IoT) drives the prosperity of ubiquitous connections among heterogeneous wireless devices (e.g. WiFi, ZigBee and Bluetooth) that follow different standards. Wireless devices share unlicensed industrial, scientific and medical bands, offering an opportunity for cross‐technology communication (CTC), where coexistence and cooperation mechanisms of wireless technologies incur the problem of coexistence. This study is purposed to present a rounded state‐of‐the‐art survey on CTC from the hardware perspective, CTC techniques are roughly divided into two types: hardware based and hardware free. In hardware‐based strategies, a dedicated hardware is required to send information to wireless devices for enabling direct communication. The hardware‐free schemes, by contrast, enable heterogeneous wireless devices to communicate directly by exchanging information or data without the dedicated hardware. Recent advances in CTC are reviewed in both types by expatiating on how heterogeneous wireless devices are achieving direct communication. The authors compare some CTCs with respect to throughput, communication range, energy efficiency and cost, in addition, they present open research issues of two types.

Abstract:In an era of rapid advancements in highly intelligent digital systems, blockchain, and other transformative technologies, the role of control and automation in shaping human civilization is of paramount, even critical, importance. This paper examines the strategic significance of IFAC's Social Systems Coordinating Committee (CC), a unique multidisciplinary global community of researchers and practitioners comprising leading universities, research centers, industry partners and international agencies at the forefront of integrating technological and societal progress.This paper reports the results of a strategic "milestone" review, including an extensive meta-analysis of the Social Systems CC's five Technical Committees (TCs) and their activities. It uncovers key themes emphasizing this CC's contributions to models, systems, infrastructures, and operations. Using content analysis and word clouds, 272 keywords were refined to elucidate the main themes of the CC, revealing significant current and future collaborations with other IFAC communities and external organizations. The paper identifies high-potential new cooperation opportunities between this CC and the other IFAC CCs and their TCs, suggesting ways to achieve these collaborations. The findings highlight the Social Systems CC's unique position at the heart of the global automation and control community, where it offers practical applications in planning, management, and sustainability as well as fostering cross-sector cooperation crucial for human progress and effective humanitarian and environmental responses. This paper underscores the Social Systems CC's role in advancing control science and automation systems engineering to tackle pressing societal challenges, advocating for a future where technology and human systems synergize for the global well-being of all living systems.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce an Internet of Things application, smart community, which refers to a paradigmatic class of cyber-physical systems with cooperating objects (i.e., networked smart homes). We then define the smart community architecture, and describe how to realize secure and robust networking among individual homes. We present two smart community applications, Neighborhood Watch and Pervasive Healthcare, with supporting techniques and associated challenges, and envision a few value-added smart community services.
