Abstract:Thirty years ago,the invention and volume shipment of IBM PC significantly enlarged the user population of computing.For the next thirty years,what is the most fundamental challenge of the computing field? What paradigm shift is needed? What is the most significant industrial problem? What are the most needed scientific breakthroughs? This article addresses these questions by discussing a dozen essential issues of computing for the masses.The most fundamental challenge is the computing market's growth stagnation.Computing for the masses is proposed to reverse this trend and should be a fundamental future direction.It has three features of value-augmenting,affordability,and sustainability.The most basic paradigm shift is human-cyber-physical ternary computing.The most significant industrial problem is the Insecta Classis paradox.Computing for the masses needs five pillars of science support,including ternary computing science,universal compute account,efficient sea-network-cloud computing platforms,information ecosystem science,and national information accounts.This article helps outline the problem space for future computer science research,with a discussion on related transformative research projects.

Abstract:With advances in cloud computing and big data technologies, "human-cyber-physical" applications are providing increasingly rich information and robust functionality. This imposes new technical changes on software systems, which are required to make self-adaptation and continuous evolution to meet our increasingly higher expectations. This article explores theories and techniques for growing software to meet the challenges caused by constantly changing environments and external resources. It studies the source of the software growability problem, seeks to define software growability, and develops a paradigm for growing software. It further analyzes the challenges of supporting environmental sensing and self-adaptation, realizing seamless evolution and process optimization, and developing quality evaluation and assurance mechanisms for growing software. It also reports recent technical advances in these areas from the perspective of long-living and continuously-growing software.

Abstract:Advancements in digital technologies have a bootstrapping effect. The past fifty years of technological innovations from the computer architecture community have brought innovations and orders-of-magnitude efficiency improvements that engender use cases that were not previously possible -- stimulating novel application domains and increasing uses and deployments at an ever-faster pace. Consequently, computing technologies have fueled significant economic growth, creating education opportunities, enabling access to a wider and more diverse spectrum of information, and, at the same time, connecting people of differing needs in the world together. Technology must be offered that is inclusive of the world's physical, cultural, and economic diversity, and which is manufactured, used, and recycled with environmental sustainability at the forefront. For the next decades to come, we envision significant cross-disciplinary efforts to build a circular development cycle by placing pervasive connectivity, sustainability, and demographic inclusion at the design forefront in order to sustain and expand the benefits of a technologically rich society. We hope this work will inspire our computing community to take broader and more holistic approaches when developing technological solutions to serve people from different parts of the world.

Abstract:This topical issue, Computational Approaches for Cyber Social Threats , showcases cutting-edge research that employs computational methods to tackle the pressing challenges of cyber social threats—such as fake news, disinformation, cyberbullying, hate speech, and online radicalization. In an increasingly interconnected digital landscape, these threats significantly jeopardize societal stability by eroding public trust, intensifying polarization, and widening social divides. The theme "Information Integrity During Crises" is highlighted to underscore the critical role of reliable information during global crises, when the spread of misinformation and disinformation is particularly pervasive. With a collection of nine outstanding papers, this topical issue advances our comprehension of how computational tools can address cyber social threats and protect information integrity during crises.

Abstract:This journal aims at presenting the state-of-art scientific achievements in computer science and other IT fields.The last decade has seen a rapid growth in research and initial deployment of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), complex engineered systems whose functions are dependent upon tight integration of the underlying physical, computation, and communication processes.Advances in CPS technology will drive innovation in important sectors such as transportation, energy, city/building design, agriculture, healthcare, and manufacturing.Example CPS systems that are increasingly deployed include smart cities, smart grids, smart transportations, smart agriculture, data centers, health care, and wellbeing support systems.These systems are much more complex than today's simple embedded systems, imposing stringent requirements on system capability, safety, dependability, adaptability, scalability, resiliency, security, and usability.To address these challenges, Tsinghua Science and Technology inaugurates a special issue on cyber-physical systems.

Abstract:With the continuous development of the internet, software development (especially global open-source development) is facing critical challenges, such as individual differences in developers distributed worldwide, the increasing difficulty of group collaboration, and the complex ecosystems formed by extensive social participation. These problems exhibit strong sociological characteristics in regard to the activity of software development. This study proposes the concept of software digital sociology that involves mining abundant software-activity data to investigate individual learning, group collaboration, and sustainable ecosystems. We discuss the primary investigation of the critical issues associated with the open-source supply chain and suggest that software digital sociology can inspire software-development researchers to understand the key challenges posed by extensive (computer-mediated) social participation to promote exploration of solutions using a different paradigm.

Abstract:The fourth industrial revolution, that is, Industry 4.0, is evolving all around the globe. In this article, we introduce the landscape of Industry 4.0 and beyond empowered by the seamless collaboration of communication technology (CT), information technology (IT), and operation technology (OT), that is, CIOT collaboration. Specifically, CIOT collaboration is regarded as a main improvement of Industry 4.0 compared to the previous industrial revolutions. We commence by reviewing the previous three industrial revolutions and we argue that the key feature of Industry 4.0 is the CIOT collaboration. More particularly, CT domain supports ubiquitous connectivity of the industrial elements and further bridges the physical world and the cyber world, which is a pivotal prerequisite. Then, we present the potential impacts of CIOT collaboration on typical industrial use cases with the objective of creating a more intelligent and human-friendly industry. Furthermore, the technical challenges of paving the way for the CIOT collaboration with an emphasis on the CT domain are discussed. Finally, we shed light on a roadmap for Industry 4.0 and beyond. The salient steps to be taken in the future CIOT collaboration are highlighted, which may be expected to expedite the paradigm shift towards the next industrial revolution.
