Abstract:The chromatic number of a directed graph is the minimum number of induced acyclic subdigraphs that cover its vertex set, and accordingly, the chromatic number of a tournament is the minimum number of transitive subtournaments that cover its vertex set. The neighborhood of an arc $uv$ in a tournament $T$ is the set of vertices that form a directed triangle with arc $uv$. We show that if the neighborhood of every arc in a tournament has bounded chromatic number, then the whole tournament has bounded chromatic number. This holds more generally for oriented graphs with bounded independence number, and we extend our proof from tournaments to this class of dense digraphs. As an application, we prove the equivalence of a conjecture of El-Zahar and Erdős and a recent conjecture of Nguyen, Scott and Seymour relating the structure of graphs and tournaments with high chromatic number.

Abstract:Let $D$ be an arc-colored digraph. The arc number $a(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of arcs of $D$. The color number $c(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of colors assigned to the arcs of $D$. A rainbow triangle in $D$ is a directed triangle in which every pair of arcs have distinct colors. Let $f(D)$ be the smallest integer such that if $c(D)\geq f(D)$, then $D$ contains a rainbow triangle. In this paper we obtain $f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$ and $f(T_n)$, where $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ is a complete digraph of order $n$ and $T_n$ is a strongly connected tournament of order $n$. Moreover we characterize the arc-colored complete digraph $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ with $c(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})=f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})-1$ and containing no rainbow triangles. We also prove that an arc-colored digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices contains a rainbow triangle when $a(D)+c(D)\geq a(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})+f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$, which is a directed extension of the undirected case.

Abstract:A multipartite tournament is an orientation of a complete $c$-partite graph. In [L. Volkmann, A remark on cycles through an arc in strongly connected multipartite tournaments, Appl. Math. Lett. 20 (2007) 1148--1150], Volkmann proved that a strongly connected $c$-partite tournament with $c \ge 3$ contains an arc that belongs to a directed cycle of length $m$ for every $m \in \{3, 4, \ldots, c\}$. He also conjectured the existence of three arcs with this property. In this note, we prove the existence of two such arcs.

Abstract:An out‐branching B u + (in‐branching B u − ) in a digraph D is a connected spanning subdigraph of D in which every vertex except the vertex u , called the root, has in‐degree (out‐degree) one. It is well known that there exists a polynomial algorithm for deciding whether a given digraph has k arc‐disjoint out‐branchings with prescribed roots (k is part of the input). In sharp contrast to this, it is already NP‐complete to decide if a digraph has one out‐branching which is arc‐disjoint from some in‐branching. A digraph is semicomplete if it has no pair of nonadjacent vertices. A tournament is a semicomplete digraph without directed cycles of length 2. In this paper we give a complete classification of semicomplete digraphs that have an out‐branching B u + which is arc‐disjoint from some in‐branching B v − where u , v are prescribed vertices of D . Our characterization, which is surprisingly simple, generalizes a complicated characterization for tournaments from 1991 by the first author and our proof implies the existence of a polynomial algorithm for checking whether a given semicomplete digraph has such a pair of branchings for prescribed vertices u , v and construct a solution if one exists. This confirms a conjecture of Bang‐Jensen for the case of semicomplete digraphs.

Walecki tournaments with an arc that lies in a unique directed triangle

Abstract:A Walecki tournament is any tournament that can be formed by choosing an orientation for each of the Hamilton cycles in the Walecki decomposition of a complete graph on an odd number of vertices. In this paper, we show that if some arc in a Walecki tournament on at least $7$ vertices lies in exactly one directed triangle, then there is a vertex of the tournament (the vertex typically labelled $*$ in the decomposition) that is fixed under every automorphism of the tournament. Furthermore, any isomorphism between such Walecki tournaments maps the vertex labelled $*$ in one to the vertex labelled $*$ in the other. We also show that among Walecki tournaments with a signature of even length $2k$, of the $2^{2k}$ possible signatures, at least $2^k$ produce tournaments that have an arc that lies in a unique directed triangle (and therefore to which our result applies).

A complete characterization of split digraphs with a strong arc decomposition

Abstract:A \textbf{strong arc decomposition} of a (multi-)digraph $D(V, A)$ is a partition of its arc set $A$ into two disjoint arc sets $A_1$ and $A_2$ such that both of the spanning subdigraphs $D(V, A_1)$ and $D(V, A_2)$ are strong. In this paper, we fully characterize all split digraphs that do not have a strong decomposition. This resolves two problems proposed by Bang-Jensen and Wang and contributes to a series of efforts aimed at addressing this problem for specific graph classes. This work continues the research on semicomplete composition [Bang-Jensen, Gutin and Yeo, J. Graph Theory, 2020]; on locally semicomplete digraphs [Bang-Jensen and Huang, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2010]; on a type of tournaments [Bang-Jensen and Yeo, Combinatorica, 2004].

Abstract:We prove a Wiener-type theorem for arcs in the unit circle which concerns express the measure of an arc in the unit circle via the measure's Fourier coefficients. Then we use it to compute the local dimension of a measure satisfying certain conditions of Fourier coefficients.

Abstract:We study the generalized graph splines introduced by Gilbert, Tymoczko, and Viel and focus on an attribute known as the Universal Difference Property (UDP). We prove that paths, trees, and cycles satisfy UDP. We explore UDP on graphs pasted at a single vertex and use Prüfer domains to illustrate that not every edge labeled graph satisfies UDP. We show that UDP must hold for any edge labeled graph over a ring $R$ if and only if $R$ is a Prüfer domain. Lastly, we prove that UDP is preserved by isomorphisms of edge labeled graphs.

Abstract:A {\em kernel by properly colored paths} of an arc-colored digraph $D$ is a set $S$ of vertices of $D$ such that (i) no two vertices of $S$ are connected by a properly colored directed path in $D$, and (ii) every vertex outside $S$ can reach $S$ by a properly colored directed path in $D$. In this paper, we conjecture that every arc-colored digraph with all cycles properly colored has such a kernel and verify the conjecture for unicyclic digraphs, semi-complete digraphs and bipartite tournaments, respectively. Moreover, weaker conditions for the latter two classes of digraphs are given.

On the Area-Universality of Triangulations

Abstract:We study straight-line drawings of planar graphs with prescribed face areas. A plane graph is 'area-universal' if for every area assignment on the inner faces, there exists a straight-line drawing realizing the prescribed areas. For triangulations with a special vertex order, we present a sufficient criterion for area-universality that only requires the investigation of one area assignment. Moreover, if the sufficient criterion applies to one plane triangulation, then all embeddings of the underlying planar graph are also area-universal. Until now, it is open whether area-universality is a property of a plane or planar graph. We use the developed machinery to present area-universal families of triangulations. Among them we characterize area-universality of accordion graphs showing that area-universal and non-area-universal graphs may be structural very similar.

Abstract:Universal cycles, such as De Bruijn cycles, are cyclic sequences of symbols that represent every combinatorial object from some family exactly once as a consecutive subsequence. Graph universal cycles are a graph analogue of universal cycles introduced in 2010. We introduce graph universal partial cycles, a more compact representation of graph classes, which use “do not know” edges. We show how to construct graph universal partial cycles for labeled graphs, threshold graphs, and permutation graphs. For threshold graphs and permutation graphs, we demonstrate that the graph universal cycles and graph universal partial cycles are closely related to universal cycles and compressed universal cycles, respectively. Using the same connection, for permutation graphs, we define and prove the existence of an s-overlap form of graph universal cycles. We also prove the existence of a generalized form of graph universal cycles for unlabeled graphs.

Abstract:A directed graph $R^{\circ}$ on a set $X$ is a set of ordered pairs of distinct points called \emph{arcs}. It is a tournament when every pair of distinct points is connected by an arc in one direction or the other (and not both). We can describe a tournament $R \subset X \times X$ as a total, antisymmetric relation, i.e. $R \cup R^{-1} = X \times X$ and $R \cap R^{-1}$ is the diagonal $1_X = \{ (x,x) : x \in X \}$. The set of arcs is $R^{\circ} = R \setminus 1_X = (X \times X) \setminus R^{-1}$. A topological tournament on a compact Hausdorff space $X$ is a tournament $R$ which is a closed subset of $X \times X$. We construct uncountably many non-isomorphic examples on the Cantor set $X$ as well as examples of arbitrarily large cardinality. We also describe compact Hausdorff spaces which do not admit any topological tournament.

Strong arc decompositions of split digraphs

Abstract:A {\bf strong arc decomposition} of a digraph $D=(V,A)$ is a partition of its arc set $A$ into two sets $A_1,A_2$ such that the digraph $D_i=(V,A_i)$ is strong for $i=1,2$. Bang-Jensen and Yeo (2004) conjectured that there is some $K$ such that every $K$-arc-strong digraph has a strong arc decomposition. They also proved that with one exception on 4 vertices every 2-arc-strong semicomplete digraph has a strong arc decomposition. Bang-Jensen and Huang (2010) extended this result to locally semicomplete digraphs by proving that every 2-arc-strong locally semicomplete digraph which is not the square of an even cycle has a strong arc decomposition. This implies that every 3-arc-strong locally semicomplete digraph has a strong arc decomposition. A {\bf split digraph} is a digraph whose underlying undirected graph is a split graph, meaning that its vertices can be partioned into a clique and an independent set. Equivalently, a split digraph is any digraph which can be obtained from a semicomplete digraph $D=(V,A)$ by adding a new set $V'$ of vertices and some arcs between $V'$ and $V$. In this paper we prove that every 3-arc-strong split digraph has a strong arc decomposition which can be found in polynomial time and we provide infinite classes of 2-strong split digraphs with no strong arc decomposition. We also pose a number of open problems on split digraphs.

Abstract:An arc of a graph is an oriented edge and a 3-arc is a 4-tuple $(v,u,x,y)$ of vertices such that both $(v,u,x)$ and $(u,x,y)$ are paths of length two. The 3-arc graph of a graph $G$ is defined to have vertices the arcs of $G$ such that two arcs $uv, xy$ are adjacent if and only if $(v,u,x,y)$ is a 3-arc of $G$. In this paper we give a characterization of 3-arc graphs and obtain sharp upper bounds on the domination number of the 3-arc graph of a graph $G$ in terms that of $G$.

Abstract:In this series of two papers we examine the classical problem of ranking a set of players on the basis of a set of pairwise comparisons arising from a sports tournament, with the objective of minimizing the total number of upsets, where an upset occurs if a higher ranked player was actually defeated by a lower ranked player. This problem can be rephrased as the so-called minimum feedback arc set problem on tournaments, which arises in a rich variety of applications and has been a subject of extensive research. In this series we study this NP-hard problem using structure-driven and linear programming approaches. Let T=(V,A) be a tournament with a nonnegative integral weight w(e) on each arc e. A subset F of arcs is called a feedback arc set if T\F contains no cycles (directed). A collection C of cycles (with repetition allowed) is called a cycle packing if each arc e is used at most w(e) times by members of C. We call T cycle Mengerian (CM) if, for every nonnegative integral function w defined on A, the minimum total weight of a feedback arc set is equal to the maximum size of a cycle packing. The purpose of these two papers is to show that a tournament is CM iff it contains none of four Möbius ladders as a subgraph; such a tournament is referred to as Möbius-free. In this first paper we present a structural description of all Möbius-free tournaments, which relies heavily on a chain theorem concerning internally 2-strong tournaments.

Abstract:Arc-locally semicomplete and arc-locally in-semicomplete digraphs were introduced by Bang-Jensen as a common generalization of both semicomplete and semicomplete bipartite digraphs in 1993. Later, Bang-Jensen (2004), Galeana-Sanchez and Goldfeder (2009) and Wang and Wang (2009) provided a characterization of strong arc-locally semicomplete digraphs. In 2009, Wang and Wang characterized strong arc-locally in-semicomplete digraphs. In 2012, Galeana-Sanchez and Goldfeder provided a characterization of all arc-locally semicomplete digraphs which generalizes some results by Bang-Jensen. In this paper, we characterize the structure of arbitrary connected arc-locally (out) in-semicomplete digraphs and arbitrary connected arc-locally semicomplete digraphs.

Abstract:We prove a result describing the structure of the formal neighborhoods of certain arcs in the arc space of an algebraic variety which are completely contained in the singular locus. In particular, we provide a precise formulation of the intuitive statement that constant arcs centered in the singular locus are the most singular points of the arc space.
