Abstract:We prove a Wiener-type theorem for arcs in the unit circle which concerns express the measure of an arc in the unit circle via the measure's Fourier coefficients. Then we use it to compute the local dimension of a measure satisfying certain conditions of Fourier coefficients.

Abstract:If $U$ is a $C^{\infty}$ function with compact support in the plane, we let $u$ be its restriction to the unit circle $\mathbb{S}$, and denote by $U_i,\,U_e$ the harmonic extensions of $u$ respectively in the interior and the exterior of $\mathbb S$ on the Riemann sphere. About a hundred years ago, Douglas has shown that \begin{align*} \iint_{\mathbb{D}}|\nabla U_i|^2(z)dxdy&= \iint_{\bar{\mathbb{C}}\backslash\bar{\mathbb{D}}}|\nabla U_e|^2(z)dxdy &= \frac{1}{2\pi}\iint_{\mathbb S\times\mathbb S}\left|\frac{u(z_1)-u(z_2)}{z_1-z_2}\right|^2|dz_1||dz_2|, \end{align*} thus giving three ways to express the Dirichlet norm of $u$. On a rectifiable Jordan curve $\Gamma$ we have obvious analogues of these three expressions, which will of course not be equal in general. The main goal of this paper is to show that these $3$ (semi-)norms are equivalent if and only if $\Gamma$ is a chord-arc curve.

Abstract:Norbert Wiener's celebrated Tauberian Theorem has many equivalent formulations; among these, it gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the span of translates of functions to be dense in $L^{1}$. This paper establishes two generalizations of Wiener's Tauberian Theorem to the setting of $\left(p,q\right)$-adic analysis, the study of functions $\chi:\mathbb{Z}_{p}\rightarrow\mathbb{C}_{q}$, where $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ and $\mathbb{C}_{q}$ are the $p$-adic integers and $q$-adic complex numbers, respectively, for distinct primes $p$ and $q$. The first generalization regards continuous $\left(p,q\right)$-adic functions; the second regards $\left(p,q\right)$-adic measures, equivalently, continuous $q$-adic-valued linear functionals on the space $C\left(\mathbb{Z}_{p},\mathbb{C}_{q}\right)$ of all continuous $\left(p,q\right)$-adic functions. Together, these two $\left(p,q\right)$-adic Wiener Tauberian Theorems provide a way of studying the values attained by $\left(p,q\right)$-adic functions using $\left(p,q\right)$-adic Fourier analysis.

Abstract:We investigate Wiener's Tauberian theorem from the perspective of limit functions, which results in several new versions of the Tauberian theorem. Based on this, we formulate and prove analogous Tauberian theorems for operators in the sense of quantum harmonic analysis. Using these results, we characterize the class of slowly oscillating operators and show that this class is strictly larger than the class of compact operators. Finally, we discuss uniform versions of Wiener's Tauberian theorem and its operator analogue and provide an application of this in operator theory.

Abstract:The Ionescu--Wainger multiplier theorem establishes good $L^p$ bounds for Fourier multiplier operators localized to major arcs; it has become an indispensible tool in discrete harmonic analysis. We give a simplified proof of this theorem with more explicit constants (removing logarithmic losses that were present in previous versions of the theorem), and give a more general variant involving adelic Fourier multipliers. We also establish a closely related adelic sampling theorem that shows that $\ell^p(\Z^d)$ norms of functions with Fourier transform supported on major arcs are comparable to the $L^p(\A_\Z^d)$ norm of their adelic counterparts.

Abstract:We analyze positive quadrature formulas associated with Geronimus measures supported on an arc of the unit circle that exactly integrate certain subspaces of Laurent polynomials with the highest possible dimension. The quasi-paraorthogonal polynomials associated with these measures will play a fundamental role in the case of quadrature rules with one node (Szegő-Radau) or two nodes (Szegő-Lobatto) preselected at the end points of the arc.

Abstract:Following Semmes and Zinsmeister, we continue the study of Carleson measures and their invariance under pull-back and push-forward operators. We also study the analogous statements for vanishing Carleson measures. As an application, we show that some quotient space of the space of chord-arc curves has a natural complex structure.

Abstract:We propose a twist condition, inspired by the classical Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem on area-preserving maps of the annulus, which applies to asymptotically linear Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of linear phase space. When an asymptotically linear Hamiltonian diffeomorphism, non-degenerate and unitary at infinity, satisfies this twist condition, we show that it has infinitely many periodic points.

The infinitesimal earthquake theorem for vector fields on the circle

Abstract:We prove that any continuous vector field on a circle is the extension in a suitable sense, of a unique infinitesimal earthquake of the hyperbolic plane. Furthermore, we obtain other extension results when the vector field is assumed only to be upper or lower semicontinuous. This leads to a generalization of Kerckhoff's and Gardiner's infinitesimal earthquake theorems to a broader setting, using a completely novel approach. The proof is based on the geometry of the dual of Minkowski three-space, also called Half-pipe three-geometry. In this way, we obtain a simple characterization of Zygmund vector fields on the circle in terms of width of convex hulls.

Harmonic functions on finitely-connected tori

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a Logarithmic Conjugation Theorem on finitely-connected tori. The theorem states that a harmonic function can be written as the real part of a function whose derivative is analytic and a finite sum of terms involving the logarithm of the modulus of a modified Weierstrass sigma function. We implement the method using arbitrary precision and use the result to find approximate solutions to the Laplace problem and Steklov eigenvalue problem. Using a posteriori estimation, we show that the solution of the Laplace problem on a torus with a few circular holes has error less than $10^{-100}$ using a few hundred degrees of freedom and the Steklov eigenvalues have similar error.

Abstract:As an application of P. Delgine's theorem (Esnault and Kerz in Acta Math. Vietnam. 37:531-562, 2012) on a finiteness of $l$-adic sheaves on a variety over a finite field, we show the finiteness of étale coverings of such a variety with given degree whose ramification bounded along an effective Cartier divisor. This can be thought of a higher dimensional analogue of the classical Hermite-Minkowski theorem.
