Abstract:We prove a general counting result for arcs of the same type in compact surfaces. Wealso count infinite arcs in cusped surfaces and arcs in orbifolds. These theorems are derived from aresult that guarantees the convergence of certain measures on the space of geodesic currents.

Abstract:Recently, the first and third author proved a correspondence theorem which recovers the Levine- Welschinger invariants of toric del Pezzo surfaces as a count of tropical curves weighted with arithmetic multiplicities. In this paper, we study properties of the arithmetic count ofplane tropical curves satisfying point conditions. We prove that this count is independent of the configuration of point conditions. Moreover, a Caporaso- Harris formula for the arithmetic count of plane tropical curves is obtained by moving one point to the very left. Repeating this process until all point conditions are stretched, we obtain an enriched count of floor diagrams which coincides with the tropical count. Finally, we prove polynomiality properties for the arithmetic counts using floor diagrams.

Abstract:Let $X_{0}$ be a complete hyperbolic surface of infinite type with geodesic boundary which admits a countable pair of pants decomposition. As an application of the Basmajian identity for complete bordered hyperbolic surfaces of infinite type with limit sets of 1-dimensional measure zero, we define an asymmetric metric (which is called arc metric) on the quasiconformal Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}(X_{0})$ provided that $X_{0}$ satisfies a geometric condition. Furthermore, we construct several examples of hyperbolic surfaces of infinite type satisfying the geometric condition and discuss the relation between the Shiga's condition and the geometric condition.

Abstract:In this article, we develop new methods for counting integral orbits having bounded invariants that lie inside the cusps of fundamental domains for coregular representations. We illustrate these methods for a representation of cardinal interest in number theory, namely that of the split orthogonal group acting on the space of quadratic forms.

Abstract:Interpreting tangency as a limit of two transverse intersections, we obtain a concrete formula to enumerate smooth degree d plane curves tangent to a given line at multiple points with arbitrary order of tangency. One nodal curves with multiple tangencies of any order are enumerated. Also, one cuspidal curves, that are tangent to first order to a given line at multiple points, are enumerated. We also present a new way to enumerate curves with one node; it is interpreted as a degeneration of a curve tangent to a given line. That method is extended to enumerate curves with two nodes, and also curves with one tacnode are enumerated. In the final part of the paper, it is shown how this idea can be applied in the setting of stable maps and perform a concrete computation to enumerate rational curves with first order tangency. A large number of low degree cases have been worked out explicitly.

Determining surfaces by short curves and applications

Abstract:The goal of this work is to give new quantitative results about the distribution of semi-arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces in the moduli space of closed hyperbolic surfaces. We show that two coverings of genus $g$ of a fixed arithmetic surface $S$ are $P(\frac{1}{g})$ apart from each other with respect to Teichmuller metric, where $P$ is a polynomial depending only on $S$ whose degree is universal. We also give a super-exponential upper bound for the number of semi-arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces with bounded genus, stretch and degree of invariant trace field, generalizing for this class similar well known bounds for arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces. In order to get these results we establish, for any closed hyperbolic surface $S$ with injectivity radius at least $s$, a parametrization of Teichmuller space by length functions whose values on $S$ are bounded by a linear function (with constants depending only on $s$) on the logarithmic of the genus of $S.$

Counting 3-uple Veronese surfaces

Abstract:This paper culminates in the count of the number of 3-Veronese surfaces passing through 13 general points. This follows the case of 2-Veronese surfaces discovered by Coble in the 1920's. One important element of the calculation is a direct construction of a space of "complete triangles." Our construction is different from the classical ordered constructions of Schubert, Collino and Fulton, as it occurs directly on the Hilbert scheme of length 3 subschemes of the plane. We transport the enumerative problem into a 26-dimensional Grassmannian bundle over our space of complete triangles, where we perform Atiyah-Bott localization. Several important questions arise, which we collect at the end of the paper.

Abstract:Given a surface $\Sigma$ equipped with a set $P$ of marked points, we consider the triangulations of $\Sigma$ with vertex set $P$. The flip-graph of $\Sigma$ whose vertices are these triangulations, and whose edges correspond to flipping arcs appears in the study of moduli spaces and mapping class groups. We consider the number of geodesics in the flip-graph of $\Sigma$ between two triangulations as a function of their distance. We show that this number grows exponentially provided the surface has enough topology, and that in the remaining cases the growth is polynomial.

Abstract:Using methods from enriched enumerative geometry, Larson and Vogt gave a signed count of the number of real bitangents to real smooth plane quartics. This signed count depends on a choice of a distinguished line. Larson and Vogt proved that this signed count is bounded below by 0, and they conjectured that the signed count is bounded above by 8. We prove this conjecture using real algebraic geometry, plane geometry, and some properties of convex sets.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a number field and $n\geqslant 1$ an integer. The universal family is the set $\mathfrak{F}$ of all unitary cuspidal automorphic representations on ${\rm GL}_n$ over $F$, ordered by their analytic conductor. We prove an asymptotic for the size of the truncated universal family $\mathfrak{F}(Q)$ as $Q\rightarrow\infty$, under a spherical assumption at the archimedean places when $n\geqslant 3$. We interpret the leading term constant geometrically and conjecturally determine the underlying Sato--Tate measure. Our methods naturally provide uniform Weyl laws with logarithmic savings in the level and strong quantitative bounds on the non-tempered discrete spectrum for ${\rm GL}_n$.

Abstract:We construct a class of perturbations of the Cauchy-Riemann equation for maps from curves to a Calabi-Yau threefold, allowing Maslov zero Lagrangian boundary conditions. Our perturbations vanish on components of zero symplectic area. For generic 1-parameter families of perturbations, the locus of solution curves without zero-area components is compact, transversely cut out, and satisfies certain natural coherence properties. In short, we construct an `adequate perturbation scheme' with the needed properties to set up the skein-valued curve counting, as axiomatized in our previous work. The main technical content is the construction, over the Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder Gromov-Witten configuration spaces, of perturbations to which the `ghost bubble censorship' argument can be applied. Certain local aspects of this problem were resolved in our previous work. The key remaining difficulty is to ensure inductive compatibilities, despite the non-existence of marked-point-forgetting maps for the configuration spaces.

Abstract:We study the enumerative geometry of algebraic curves on abelian surfaces and threefolds. In the abelian surface case, the theory is parallel to the well-developed study of the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces. We prove complete results in all genera for primitive classes. The generating series are quasimodular forms of pure weight. Conjectures for imprimitive classes are presented. In genus 2, the counts in all classes are proven. Special counts match the Euler characteristic calculations of the moduli spaces of stable pairs on abelian surfaces by Göttsche-Shende. A formula for hyperelliptic curve counting in terms of Jacobi forms is proven (modulo a transversality statement). For abelian threefolds, complete conjectures in terms of Jacobi forms for the generating series of curve counts in primitive classes are presented. The base cases make connections to classical lattice counts of Debarre, Goettsche, and Lange-Sernesi. Further evidence is provided by Donaldson-Thomas partition function computations for abelian threefolds. A multiple cover structure is presented. The abelian threefold conjectures open a new direction in the subject.

Abstract:In this note we study numerically the combinatorics of curves and geodesics on the torus with one boundary component. A potential computational difficulty is avoided by counting inside specific orbits of the mapping class group up to a certain length, either geometric or combinatorial. Some cases are rigurolosly determined and the Euler totient function emerges. More complicated orbits are computed to suggest an array of formulae continuing to involve the Euler totient function. We formulate six precise conjectures. These include a novel study of an "inverse" function of the Mirzakhani's asymptotics. The geometric part of our study was motivated by the rationality aspect of these asymptotics.

Counting geodesics on expander surfaces

Abstract:We study properties of typical closed geodesics on expander surfaces of high genus, i.e. closed hyperbolic surfaces with a uniform spectral gap of the Laplacian. Under an additional systole lower bound assumption, we show almost every geodesic of length much greater than $\sqrt{g}\log g$ is non-simple. And we prove almost every closed geodesic of length much greater than $g (\log g)^2$ is filling, i.e. each component of the complement of the geodesic is a topological disc. Our results apply to Weil-Petersson random surfaces, random covers of a fixed surface, and Brooks-Makover random surfaces, since these models are known to have uniform spectral gap asymptotically almost surely. Our proof technique involves adapting Margulis' counting strategy to work at low length scales.

Abstract:We show that for almost every translation surface the number of pairs of saddle connections with bounded magnitude of the cross product has asymptotic growth like $c R^2$ where the constant $c$ depends only on the area and the connected component of the stratum. The proof techniques combine classical results for counting saddle connections with the crucial result that the Siegel--Veech transform is in $L^2$. In order to capture information about pairs of saddle connections, we consider pairs with bounded magnitude of the cross product since the set of such pairs can be approximated by a fibered set which is equivariant under geodesic flow. In the case of lattice surfaces, small bounded magnitude of the cross product is equivalent to counting parallel pairs of saddle connections, which also have a quadratic growth of $c R^2$ where $c$ depends in this case on the given lattice surface.

Abstract:We introduce a semi-algebraic structure on the set  of all isotopy classes of non-separating simple closed curves in any compact oriented surface and show that the structure is finitely generated. As a consequence, we produce a natural finite dimensional linear representation of the mapping class group of the surface. Applications to the Teichmüller space, Thurston's measured lamination space, the harmonic Beltrami differentials, and the first cohomology groups of the surface are discussed.

Abstract:We prove an effective estimate with a power saving error term for the number of square-tiled surfaces in a connected component of a stratum of quadratic differentials whose vertical and horizontal foliations belong to prescribed mapping class group orbits and which have at most L squares. This result strengthens asymptotic counting formulas in the work of Delecroix, Goujard, Zograf, Zorich, and the author.
