Abstract:In this paper we prove that if T is a regular n -partite tournament with n ≥6, then each arc of T lies on a k -cycle for k =4,5,..., n . Our result generalizes theorems due to Alspach [1] and Guo [3] respectively.

Abstract:A multipartite tournament is an orientation of a complete $c$-partite graph. In [L. Volkmann, A remark on cycles through an arc in strongly connected multipartite tournaments, Appl. Math. Lett. 20 (2007) 1148--1150], Volkmann proved that a strongly connected $c$-partite tournament with $c \ge 3$ contains an arc that belongs to a directed cycle of length $m$ for every $m \in \{3, 4, \ldots, c\}$. He also conjectured the existence of three arcs with this property. In this note, we prove the existence of two such arcs.

Abstract:A k-hypertournament H on n vertices with 2 <= k <= n is a pair H = (v, A(H)), where V is a set of n vertices and A(H) is a set of k-tuples of vertices, called arcs, such that for any k-subset S of V, A(H) contains exactly one of the k! k-tuples whose entries belong to S. Obviously, a 2-hypertournament is a tournament.Moon (1994) proved that for every strong tournament, there is a Hamiltonian cycle which contains at least three pancyclic arcs. In this paper, we will show that for an arbitrary strong k-hypertournament H with n vertices, where 2 <= k <= n - 2, there is a Hamiltonian cycle C containing at least three pancyclic arcs, each of which belongs to an m-cycle C-m for each m is an element of {3, 4, ..., n} such that V(C-3) subset of V(C-4) subset of ... subset of V(C-n). Vertex-disjoint cycles of different lengths in tournaments

Abstract:Bermond and Thomassen conjectured in 1981 that every digraph with minimum outdegree at least $2k-1$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles,here $k$ is a positive integer. Lichiardopol conjectured in 2014 that for every positive integer $k$ there exists an integer $g(k)$ such that every digraph with minimum outdegree at least $g(k)$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles of different lengths. Recently, Chen and Chang proved in [J. Graph Theory 105 (2) (2024) 297-314] that for $k\geqslant 3$ every tournament with minimum outdegree at least $2k-1$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles in which two of them have different lengths. Motivated by the above two conjectures and related results, we investigate vertex-disjoint cycles of different lengths in tournaments, and show that when $k\geqslant 5$ every tournament with minimum outdegree at least $2k-1$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles in which three of them have different lengths. In addition, we show that every tournament with minimum outdegree at least $6$ contains three vertex-disjoint cycles of different lengths and the minimum outdegree condition is sharp. This answers a question proposed by Chen and Chang.

Abstract:In 1981, Bermond and Thomassen conjectured that for any positive integer k , every digraph with minimum out-degree at least 2k−1 admits k vertex-disjoint directed cycles. In this short paper, we verify the Bermond-Thomassen conjecture for triangle-free multipartite tournaments and 3-partite tournaments. Furthermore, we characterize 3-partite tournaments with minimum out-degree at least 2k−1 ( k≥2 ) such that in each set of k vertex-disjoint directed cycles, every cycle has the same length.

Abstract:Embedding cycles into a network topology is crucial for a network simulation. In particular, embedding Hamiltonian cycles is a major requirement for designing good interconnection networks. A graph G is called r-spanning cyclable if, for any r distinct vertices v1,v2,...,vr of G, there exist r cycles C1,C2,...,Cr in G such that vi is on Ci for every i, and every vertex of G is on exactly one cycle Ci. If r=1, this is the classical Hamiltonian problem. In this paper, we focus on the problem of embedding spanning disjoint cycles in bipartite k-ary n-cubes. Let k≥4 be even and n≥2. It is shown that the n-dimensional bipartite k-ary n-cube Qnk is m-spanning cyclable with m≤2n−1. Considering the degree of Qnk, the result is optimal.

Abstract:Let C4 be a cycle of order 4. Write ex(n,n,n,C4) for the maximum number of edges in a balanced 3‐partite graph whose vertex set consists of three parts, each has n vertices that have no subgraph isomorphic to C4 . In this paper, we show that ex(n,n,n,C4)≥32n(p+1) , where n=p(p−1)2 and p is a prime number. Note that ex(n,n,n,C4)≤(322+o(1))n32 from Tait and Timmons's works. Since for every integer m , one can find a prime p such that m≤p≤(1+o(1))m , we obtain that limn→∞ex(n,n,n,C4)322n32=1 .
Packing and covering a given directed graph in a directed graph

Abstract:For every fixed $k \ge 4$, it is proved that if an $n$-vertex directed graph has at most $t$ pairwise arc-disjoint directed $k$-cycles, then there exists a set of at most $\frac{2}{3}kt+ o(n^2)$ arcs that meets all directed $k$-cycles and that the set of $k$-cycles admits a fractional cover of value at most $\frac{2}{3}kt$. It is also proved that the ratio $\frac{2}{3}k$ cannot be improved to a constant smaller than $\frac{k}{2}$. For $k=5$ the constant $2k/3$ is improved to $25/8$ and for $k=3$ it was recently shown by Cooper et al. that the constant can be taken to be $9/5$. The result implies a deterministic polynomial time $\frac{2}{3}k$-approximation algorithm for the directed $k$-cycle cover problem, improving upon a previous $(k{-}1)$-approximation algorithm of Kortsarz et al. More generally, for every directed graph $H$ we introduce a graph parameter $f(H)$ for which it is proved that if an $n$-vertex directed graph has at most $t$ pairwise arc-disjoint $H$-copies, then there exists a set of at most $f(H)t+ o(n^2)$ arcs that meets all $H$-copies and that the set of $H$-copies admits a fractional cover of value at most $f(H)t$. It is shown that for almost all $H$ it holds that $f(H) \approx |E(H)|/2$ and that for every $k$-vertex tournament $H$ it holds that $f(H) \le \lfloor k^2/4 \rfloor$.

Bounding the chromatic number of dense digraphs by arc neighborhoods

Abstract:The chromatic number of a directed graph is the minimum number of induced acyclic subdigraphs that cover its vertex set, and accordingly, the chromatic number of a tournament is the minimum number of transitive subtournaments that cover its vertex set. The neighborhood of an arc $uv$ in a tournament $T$ is the set of vertices that form a directed triangle with arc $uv$. We show that if the neighborhood of every arc in a tournament has bounded chromatic number, then the whole tournament has bounded chromatic number. This holds more generally for oriented graphs with bounded independence number, and we extend our proof from tournaments to this class of dense digraphs. As an application, we prove the equivalence of a conjecture of El-Zahar and Erdős and a recent conjecture of Nguyen, Scott and Seymour relating the structure of graphs and tournaments with high chromatic number.

Abstract:A cycle C={v_1,v_2,....,v_1} in a tournament T is said to be even, if when walking along C, an even number of edges point in the wrong direction, that is, they are directed from v_{i+1} to v_i. In this short paper, we show that for every fixed even integer k >= 4, if close to half of the k-cycles in a tournament T are even, then T must be quasi-random. Abstract:In this series of two papers we examine the classical problem of ranking a set of players on the basis of a set of pairwise comparisons arising from a sports tournament, with the objective of minimizing the total number of upsets, where an upset occurs if a higher ranked player was actually defeated by a lower ranked player. This problem can be rephrased as the so-called minimum feedback arc set problem on tournaments, which arises in a rich variety of applications and has been a subject of extensive research. In this series we study this NP-hard problem using structure-driven and linear programming approaches. Let T=(V,A) be a tournament with a nonnegative integral weight w(e) on each arc e. A subset F of arcs is called a feedback arc set if T\F contains no cycles (directed). A collection C of cycles (with repetition allowed) is called a cycle packing if each arc e is used at most w(e) times by members of C. We call T cycle Mengerian (CM) if, for every nonnegative integral function w defined on A, the minimum total weight of a feedback arc set is equal to the maximum size of a cycle packing. The purpose of these two papers is to show that a tournament is CM iff it contains none of four Möbius ladders as a subgraph; such a tournament is referred to as Möbius-free. In this first paper we present a structural description of all Möbius-free tournaments, which relies heavily on a chain theorem concerning internally 2-strong tournaments.

Abstract:Let $C_k$ be a cycle of order $k$, where $k\ge 3$. Let ex$(n, n, n, \{C_{3}, C_{4}\})$ be the maximum number of edges in a balanced $3$-partite graph whose vertex set consists of three parts, each has $n$ vertices that has no subgraph isomorphic to $C_3$ or $C_4$. We construct dense balanced 3-partite graphs without 3-cycles or 4-cycles and show that ex$(n, n, n, \{C_{3}, C_{4}\})\ge (\frac{6\sqrt{2}-8}{(\sqrt{2}-1)^{3/2}}+o(1))n^{3/2}$.

Abstract:How many edges in an n ‐vertex graph will force the existence of a cycle with as many chords as it has vertices? Almost 30 years ago, Chen, Erdős and Staton considered this question and showed that any n ‐vertex graph with 2n3/2 edges contains such a cycle. We significantly improve this old bound by showing that Ω(nlog8n) edges are enough to guarantee the existence of such a cycle. Our proof exploits a delicate interplay between certain properties of random walks in almost regular expanders. We argue that while the probability that a random walk of certain length in an almost regular expander is self‐avoiding is very small, one can still guarantee that it spans many edges (and that it can be closed into a cycle) with large enough probability to ensure that these two events happen simultaneously.

Long cycles and spectral radii in planar graphs

Abstract:There is a rich history of studying the existence of cycles in planar graphs. The famous Tutte theorem on the Hamilton cycle states that every 4-connected planar graph contains a Hamilton cycle. Later on, Thomassen (1983), Thomas and Yu (1994) and Sanders (1996) respectively proved that every 4-connected planar graph contains a cycle of length $n-1, n-2$ and $n-3$. Chen, Fan and Yu (2004) further conjectured that every 4-connected planar graph contains a cycle of length $\ell$ for $\ell\in\{n,n-1,\ldots,n-25\}$ and they verified that $\ell\in \{n-4, n-5, n-6\}$. When we remove the ``4-connected" condition, how to guarantee the existence of a long cycle in a planar graph? A natural question asks by adding a spectral radius condition: What is the smallest constant $C$ such that for sufficiently large $n$, every graph $G$ of order $n$ with spectral radius greater than $C$ contains a long cycle in a planar graph? In this paper, we give a stronger answer to the above question. Let $G$ be a planar graph with order $n\geq 1.8\times 10^{17}$ and $k\leq \lfloor\log_2(n-3)\rfloor-8$ be a non-negative integer, we show that if $\rho(G)\geq \rho(K_2\vee(P_{n-2k-4}\cup 2P_{k+1}))$ then $G$ contains a cycle of length $\ell$ for every $\ell\in \{n-k, n-k-1, \ldots, 3\}$ unless $G\cong K_2\vee(P_{n-2k-4}\cup 2P_{k+1})$.

Acyclic subgraphs of tournaments with high chromatic number

Abstract:We prove that every $n$-vertex tournament $G$ has an acyclic subgraph with chromatic number at least $n^{5/9-o(1)}$, while there exists an $n$-vertex tournament $G$ whose every acyclic subgraph has chromatic number at most $n^{3/4+o(1)}$. This establishes in a strong form a conjecture of Nassar and Yuster and improves on another result of theirs. Our proof combines probabilistic and spectral techniques together with some additional ideas. In particular, we prove a lemma showing that every tournament with many transitive subtournaments has a large subtournament that is almost transitive. This may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Let $D=(V,A)$ be a directed graph of order $n\geq 6$. Let $W$ be a subset of $V$ with $|W|\geq 6$. Suppose that every vertex of $W$ has degree at least $(3n-3)/2$ in $D$. Then for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2$ with $n_1\geq 3$ and $n_2\geq 3$, $D$ contains two disjoint directed cycles $C_1$ and $C_2$ such that $|V(C_1)\cap W|=n_1$ and $|V(C_2)\cap W|=n_2$. We conjecture that for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2+\cdots +n_k$ with $k\geq 3$ and $n_i\geq 3(1\leq i\leq k)$, $D$ contains $k$ disjoint directed cycles $C_1,C_2,\ldots , C_k$ such that $|V(C_i)\cap W|=n_i$ for all $1\leq i\leq k$. The degree condition is sharp in general.

Planar Graphs with Homomorphisms to the 9-cycle

Abstract:We study the problem of finding homomorphisms into odd cycles from planar graphs with high odd-girth. The Jaeger-Zhang conjecture states that every planar graph of odd-girth at least $4k+1$ admits a homomorphism to the odd cycle $C_{2k+1}$. The $k=1$ case is the well-known Grötzsch's $3$-coloring theorem. For general $k$, in 2013 Lovász, Thomassen, Wu, and Zhang showed that it suffices to have odd-girth at least $6k+1$. Improvements are known for $C_5$ and $C_7$ in [Combinatorica 2017, SIDMA 2020, Combinatorica 2022]. For $C_9$ we improve this hypothesis by showing that it suffices to have odd-girth 23. Our main tool is a variation on the potential method applied to modular orientations. This allows more flexibility when seeking reducible configurations. The same techniques also prove some results on circular coloring of signed planar graphs.

Abstract:For a graph $G$, let $\sigma_{2}(G)$ be the minimum degree sum of two non-adjacent vertices in $G$. A chord of a cycle in a graph $G$ is an edge of $G$ joining two non-consecutive vertices of the cycle. In this paper, we prove the following result, which is an extension of a result of Brandt et al. (J. Graph Theory 24 (1997) 165-173) for large graphs: For positive integers $k$ and $c$, there exists an integer $f(k,c)$ such that, if $G$ is a graph of order $n \ge f(k, c)$ and $\sigma_{2}(G) \ge n$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles, each of which has at least $c$ chords.

Abstract:Bondy and Vince showed that every graph with minimum degree at least three contains two cycles of lengths differing by one or two. We prove the following average degree counterpart that every n ‐vertex graph G with at least 5 2 ( n − 1 ) edges, unless 4 | ( n − 1 ) and every block of G is a clique K 5 , contains two cycles of consecutive even lengths. Our proof is mainly based on structural analysis, and a crucial step which may be of independent interest shows that the same conclusion holds for every 3‐connected graph with at least six vertices. This solves a special case of a conjecture of Verstraëte. The quantitative bound is tight and also provides the optimal extremal number for cycles of length two modulo four.
