Abstract:We study the problem of finding homomorphisms into odd cycles from planar graphs with high odd-girth. The Jaeger-Zhang conjecture states that every planar graph of odd-girth at least $4k+1$ admits a homomorphism to the odd cycle $C_{2k+1}$. The $k=1$ case is the well-known Grötzsch's $3$-coloring theorem. For general $k$, in 2013 Lovász, Thomassen, Wu, and Zhang showed that it suffices to have odd-girth at least $6k+1$. Improvements are known for $C_5$ and $C_7$ in [Combinatorica 2017, SIDMA 2020, Combinatorica 2022]. For $C_9$ we improve this hypothesis by showing that it suffices to have odd-girth 23. Our main tool is a variation on the potential method applied to modular orientations. This allows more flexibility when seeking reducible configurations. The same techniques also prove some results on circular coloring of signed planar graphs.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to find a homomorphism to a 9 - cycle (i.e., an odd cycle of length 9) in planar graphs with high odd - girth. Specifically, the paper focuses on a special case of the Jaeger - Zhang conjecture, which states that every planar graph with odd - girth at least 4k + 1 has a homomorphism to an odd cycle of length 2k + 1. For the case of k = 4, the paper proves that as long as the odd - girth of a planar graph is at least 23, then this graph has a homomorphism to a 9 - cycle. This is an improvement over the previously known results, where the previous conclusion required the odd - girth to be at least 25. ### Specific problem description - **Research background**: Research on the homomorphism problem of planar graphs to odd cycles, especially when planar graphs have a relatively high odd - girth. - **Core problem**: Prove that a planar graph with odd - girth at least 23 has a homomorphism to a 9 - cycle. - **Improvement point**: Compared with the previous results (requiring the odd - girth to be at least 25), the paper relaxes this condition to 23. ### Main contributions - **Theoretical result**: Prove that every planar graph with odd - girth at least 23 has a homomorphism to a 9 - cycle. - **Method innovation**: Use an improved potential method to deal with modular orientations, which provides greater flexibility for finding reducible configurations. - **Application extension**: The same technique is also used to prove the cyclic coloring problem of signed planar graphs. ### Key concepts - **Homomorphism**: A homomorphism from a graph \(G\) to a graph \(H\) is a function \(\phi: V(G)\to V(H)\) that preserves adjacency relations. - **Odd - girth**: The length of the shortest odd cycle in a graph. - **Modular orientation**: Given an orientation \(D\), if the difference between the out - degree and the in - degree of each vertex \(v\) is 0 modulo \(2k + 1\), then \(D\) is called a modular \(2k + 1\) - orientation. - **Potential method**: A technique for finding reducible configurations by assigning different weights to different parts of a graph to simplify the problem. ### Conclusion The main conclusion of the paper is to prove that every planar graph with odd - girth at least 23 has a homomorphism to a 9 - cycle. This result not only improves previous work but also provides new tools and techniques for further research on homomorphism problems of odd cycles of other lengths.
