Abstract:The high energy consumption of 5G New Radio (NR) poses a major challenge to user experience. A major source of energy consumption in User Equipments (UE) is the radio tail, during which the UE remains in a high-power state to release the radio sources. Existing energy optimization approaches cut radio tails by forcing the UE to enter a low-power state. However, these approaches introduce extra promotion delays and energy consumption with soon-coming data transmissions. In this paper, we first conduct an empirical study to reveal that the 5G radio tail introduces significant energy waste on UEs. Then we propose 5GSaver, a two-phase energy-saving approach that utilizes the inactive state of New Radio to better eliminate the tail phenomenon in 5G cellular networks. 5GSaver identifies the end of App communication events in the first phase and predicts the next packet arrival time in the second phase. With the learning results, 5GSaver can automatically help the UE determine which radio resource control state to enter for saving energy. We evaluate 5GSaver using 15 mobile Apps on commercial smartphones. Evaluation results show that 5GSaver can reduce radio energy consumption by 9.5% and communication delay by 12.4% on average compared to the state-of-the-art approach.

Abstract:After about a decade of intense research, spurred by both economic and operational considerations, and by environmental concerns, energy efficiency has now become a key pillar in the design of communication networks. With the advent of the fifth generation of wireless networks, with millions more base stations and billions of connected devices, the need for energy-efficient system design and operation will be even more compelling. This survey provides an overview of energy-efficient wireless communications, reviews seminal and recent contribution to the state-of-the-art, including the papers published in this special issue, and discusses the most relevant research challenges to be addressed in the future.

Abstract:This article provides an overview on research in energy-efficient wireless networks during the past decade and discusses its potential applications toward the fifth generation cellular systems. After analyzing the trade-off between spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency, various research results are summarized within a framework of energy-efficient resource allocation with optimization as a common tool. Then potential energy efficiency improving approaches in both physical layer and deployment aspects are provided. Finally, energy efficiency related open problems in massive multiple-input multiple- output, device-to-device communications, ultra dense networks, and other emerging technologies are identified.

Abstract:With the deployment and commercialization of the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication networks, the access nodes and data volume of wireless networks are showing massive and explosive growth. In this paper, we firstly review the research progress on the energy-efficient and spectrum-efficient wireless transmission, from the perspectives of both latency and energy consumption. We then provide several solutions to high-efficiency wireless transmission for the 5G wireless networks. Finally, we give some discussions about the future road for the design of energy-efficient and spectrum-efficient wireless transmission, which provides some theoretical reference for the system design of wireless networks and Internet of Things (IoT) networks.

Abstract:Cellular networks have changed the world we are living in, and the fifth generation (5G) of radio technology is expected to further revolutionise our everyday lives by enabling a high degree of automation, through its larger capacity, massive connectivity, and ultra-reliable low-latency communications. In addition, the third generation partnership project (3GPP) new radio (NR) specification also provides tools to significantly decrease the energy consumption and the green house emissions of next generations networks, thus contributing towards information and communication technology (ICT) sustainability targets. In this survey paper, we thoroughly review the state-of-the-art on current energy efficiency research. We first categorize and carefully analyse the different power consumption models and energy efficiency metrics, which have helped to make progress on the understanding of green wireless networks. Then, as a main contribution, we survey in detail —from a theoretical and a practical viewpoint— the main energy efficiency enabling technologies that 3GPP NR provides, together with their main benefits and challenges. Special attention is paid to four key enabling technologies, i.e., massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), lean carrier design, and advanced idle modes, together with the role of artificial intelligence capabilities. We dive into their implementation and operational details, and thoroughly discuss their optimal operation points and theoretical-trade-offs from an energy consumption perspective. This will help the reader to grasp the fundamentals of —and the status on— green wireless networking. Finally, the areas of research where more effort is needed to make future wireless networks greener are also discussed.

Abstract:This session covers a wide range of emerging sensing and ultra-low power IOT systems.The first paper presents a fully integrated fluorescence-based biosensor in 65nm CMOS with integrated optical filters.An ultra-low power interface IC for bioreactor monitoring comes next, followed by a CMOS biosensor array with on-chip dielectrophoresis (DEP) and sensing capabilities.The next two papers present a 263GHz IC for electron paramagnetic resonance sensing, and a battery monitoring and communication IC for electrical vehicles.The final paper showcases an ultra-low-power backscattering IoT tag that harvests energy from LTE, and backscatters tone-like BLE packets to WiFi channels.

Abstract:The large scale of the Internet of Things necessitates using long-lasting physical layer devices for data collection. Deploying large numbers of Wi-Fi-enabled devices is expensive, so the Internet of Everything (IoE) is equipped with multiple communication modules to collect data where Wi-Fi is unavailable. However, because of their extended communication capabilities, IoE devices face energy limitations. As a result, IoE devices must be provided with the necessary energy resources. This paper introduces a novel multi-hop cooperation communication mechanism for Wireless Energy Transfer (WET) in the Wireless Powered-Internet of Everything (WP-IoE). IoE devices are outfitted here with various communication devices such as RF, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. This research proposes a two-phase energy transmission schedule to address the energy requirements. For data collection, the first phase provides a distributed tree-based data communication plan. The proposed model's second phase used the reverse data collection protocol to implement wireless energy transmission. By combining these two phases, an optimized WET framework was created without unmanned aerial vehicles or robots. The experimental findings show that the proposed method in this research increases the average lifetime of the network and has a more significant charge latency and average charge throughput than other models.

Abstract:Among the key challenges with wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is that most sensor nodes are fueled by energy-constrained batteries, which has a significant impact on the network’s efficiency, reliability, and durability. As a result, many clustering approaches have been developed to enhance the energy efficiency of WSNs. Meanwhile, fifth-generation (5G) transmissions necessitate the usage of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple antennas in numerous Internet of Things (IoT) applications to furnish increased capacity in a multipath spectrum environment. Instead of a single senor that can facilitate better load balancing utilization, we believe to balance the energy utilization per unit area. The devices in IoT are submerged with various transmission interfaces known as MIMO in 5G networks. With MIMO being more commonly accessible on IoT devices, an effective clustering approach for rapidly evolving IoT systems is both lacking and urgently needed to support a variety of user scenarios. In this paper, we proposed the intelligent MIMO-based 5G balanced energy-efficient protocol which focuses to achieve Quality of Experience (QoE) for transmitting in clusters for IoT networks. The proposed protocol enhances the utilization of energy and lifetime of the network in which it shows 30% less energy utilized in comparison to the existing protocols.

Abstract:The growing popularity of Internet of Things (IoT) applications brings new challenges to the wireless communication community. Numerous smart devices and sensors within IoT will generate a massive amount of short data packets. Future wireless transmission systems need to support the reliable transmission of such small data with extremely high energy efficiency. In this article, we introduce a novel data-oriented approach for characterizing the energy efficiency of wireless transmission strategies for IoT applications. Specifically, we present new energy efficiency performance limits targeting at individual data transmission sessions. Through preliminary analysis on two channel-adaptive transmission strategies, we develop several important design guidelines on green transmission of small data. We also present several promising future applications of the proposed data-oriented energy efficiency characterization.

Abstract:Sensor node systems are expected to be a major growth field for semiconductor markets, and will connect to the cloud in a future cyber physical world. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) face multiple challenges from system design to low-power electronics and energy sources. Ultra-low-power radios are key elements in such systems, putting high demand on energy efficiency in different modes of operation (active, wake-up and sleep). This forum presents system perspectives and practical design aspects in various energy-efficient and short-range radio circuits and systems, including an introduction to various applications and their requirements for RF and digital signal processing in WSN systems. The technologies range from RF to digital signal processing and algorithms to give comprehensive understanding of recent advances. The forum begins with two high-level design talks on low power radio SoCs. The following four talks present ultra-low-power transceivers for body-area networks, sensor nodes, and health-monitoring applications. The last two talks cover efficient power management and emerging compression methodologies.

Abstract:The stringent requirements of a 1000× increase in data traffic and 1 ms round-trip latency have made limiting the potentially tremendous ensuing energy consumption one of the most challenging problems for the design of the upcoming 5G networks. To enable sustainable 5G networks, new technologies have been proposed to improve the system energy efficiency, and alternative energy sources are introduced to reduce our dependence on traditional fossil fuels. In particular, various 5G techniques target the reduction of the energy consumption without sacrificing the quality of service. Meanwhile, energy harvesting technologies, which enable communication transceivers to harvest energy from various renewable resources and ambient radio frequency signals for communication, have drawn significant interest from both academia and industry. In this article, we provide an overview of the latest research on both green 5G techniques and energy harvesting for communication. In addition, some technical challenges and potential research topics for realizing sustainable green 5G networks are also identified.

Abstract:This paper gives an overview of several energy-efficient short-range transceivers implemented for IoT and smartphone-based WPAN systems. For high data rate applications, an ultra-wideband (UWB) proximity transceiver for a smartphone-based sharing desktop platform with secure screen-mirrored display is presented. As to low data rate applications, wideband and narrowband transceivers based on proprietary modulation schemes such as very-wideband (VWB) and frequency-domain OOK (F-OOK) are introduced by considering energy efficiency, bandwidth efficiency, and communication distance.

Abstract:Wireless communications have lately experienced substantial exploitation because they provide a lot of flexibility for data delivery. It provides connection and mobility by using air as a medium. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are now the most popular wireless technologies. They need a communication infrastructure that is both energy and computationally efficient, which is made feasible by developing the best communication protocol algorithms. The internet of things (IoT) paradigm is anticipated to be heavily reliant on a networking architecture that is currently in development and dubbed software-defined WSN. Energy-efficient routing design is a key objective for WSNs. Cluster routing is one of the most commonly used routing techniques for extending network life. This research proposes a novel approach for increasing the energy effectiveness and longevity of software-defined WSNs. The major goal is to reduce the energy consumption of the cluster routing protocol using the firefly algorithm and high-efficiency entropy. According to the findings of the simulation, the suggested method outperforms existing algorithms in terms of system performance under various operating conditions. The number of alive nodes determined by the proposed algorithm is about 42.06% higher than Distributed Energy-Efficient Clustering with firefly algorithm (DEEC-FA) and 13.95% higher than Improved Firefly Clustering IFCEER and 12.05% higher than another referenced algorithm.

Abstract:This paper provides an overview on our research on energy-efficient resource optimization and transmission strategies for hyper-cellular systems over the past five years.It summarizes the fundamental relationship between energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE),as well as the impact of physical resources on the relationship,such as time,frequency,antenna,and cache,and reviews the energy-efficient transmission strategies adapted to dynamic channels and traffic.It is in the context of key technologies in fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication systems,including massive centralized/distributed antenna systems,ultra-dense networks (UDNs),device-to-device (D2D) communications,and coordinated multi-point transmission (CoMP).It is shown that the EE-SE relationship in all representative systems exhibits a "bell-shaped curve",meaning SE and EE increase simultaneously when SE is low while there is a tradeoff between SE and EE otherwise.Furthermore,the SE loss in EE-optimal policies is low,but the EE loss in SE-optimal policies is high.EE approaches zero with an increase in the number of antennas.Universal frequency reuse can maximize EE when the base station (BS)-to-user density ratio is large while partial frequency reuse is better for EE otherwise.Caching at BSs can improve EE and EE gain is high in scenarios with weak interference,low-capacity backhaul,and large content popularity skewness.

Abstract:RF PAs and front-end building blocks are critical for the output power, noise, power-efficiency, out-of-band rejection, and antenna impedance tuning of wireless transceivers. The first three papers in this session cover mm-wave PAs with efficiency enhancement techniques for 5G applications. The next paper presents a 28GHz reflection-coefficient sensor for mm-wave antenna-tuner applications. The session continues with two digital-PA papers in sub-6GHz frequency bands with back-off efficiency enhancement. The session concludes with an N-path filter exhibiting impedance transformation and passive voltage gain.

Abstract:During the past decade, the Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized the ubiquitous computing with multitude of applications built around various types of sensors. A vast amount of activity is seen in IoT based product-lines and this activity is expected to grow in years to come with projections as high as billions of devices with on average 6-7 devices per person by year 2020. With most of the issues at device and protocol levels solved during the past decade, there is now a growing trend in integration of sensors and sensor based systems with cyber physical systems and device-to-device (D2D) communications. 5th generation wireless systems (5G) are on the horizon and IoT is taking the center stage as devices are expected to form a major portion of this 5G network paradigm. IoT technologies such as machine to machine communication complemented with intelligent data analytics are expected to drastically change landscape of various industries. The emergence of cloud computing and its extension to fog paradigm with proliferation of intelligent `smart' devices is expected to lead further innovation in IoT. These developments excite us and form a motivation to survey existing work, design new techniques, and identify new applications of IoT. Researchers, scientists, and engineers face emerging challenges in designing IoT based systems that can efficiently be integrated with the 5G wireless communications.

Abstract:Recently, wireless technologies have been growing actively all around the world. In the context of wireless technology, fifth-generation (5G) technology has become a most challenging and interesting topic in wireless research. This article provides an overview of the Internet of Things (IoT) in 5G wireless systems. IoT in the 5G system will be a game changer in the future generation. It will open a door for new wireless architecture and smart services. Recent cellular network LTE (4G) will not be sufficient and efficient to meet the demands of multiple device connectivity and high data rate, more bandwidth, low-latency quality of service (QoS), and low interference. To address these challenges, we consider 5G as the most promising technology. We provide a detailed overview of challenges and vision of various communication industries in 5G IoT systems. The different layers in 5G IoT systems are discussed in detail. This article provides a comprehensive review on emerging and enabling technologies related to the 5G system that enables IoT. We consider the technology drivers for 5G wireless technology, such as 5G new radio (NR), multiple-input–multiple-output antenna with the beamformation technology, mm-wave commutation technology, heterogeneous networks (HetNets), the role of augmented reality (AR) in IoT, which are discussed in detail. We also provide a review on low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), security challenges, and its control measure in the 5G IoT scenario. This article introduces the role of AR in the 5G IoT scenario. This article also discusses the research gaps and future directions. The focus is also on application areas of IoT in 5G systems. We, therefore, outline some of the important research directions in 5G IoT.

Abstract:This article identifies energy-saving potential of the fifth generation (5G) Radio Access Network, and describes main energy-saving principles and technologies. It explores how to use network energy saving technologies, such as carrier shutdown, channel shutdown, and symbol shutdown in 5G network, that have been inherited from 4G. Some enhanced technologies for 5G like equipment deep sleep and symbol aggregation have also been introduced in this article. However, it is far from enough and an innovative energy-saving solution should be considered. To meet the requirements and development of intelligent and self-adaptive energy-saving solution, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data analysis are introduced to form a more precise energy-saving strategy based on site-specific traffic and site-related conditions, thus improving the efficiency and reducing the manpower. Finally, two commercial application practices of AI-based energy-saving solution are elaborated. One is the practice of AI-based service awareness energy saving for 4G/5G collaborative networks, the energy benefits can be improved up to 20%; The other practice is the adoption of a new architecture Active Antenna Unit (AAU) with beam pattern optimization, its energy benefits can be promoted by 30%. These two practices could help mobile network operators (MNOs) to achieve the most energy-efficient network with good network performance and lower Operating Expense (OPEX).
