Abstract:Traditional battery-powered wireless sensor networks face many challenges to meet the requirements of a wide range of demanding applications nowadays due to their limited energy. Although energy harvesting techniques can scavenge energy from the environment to sustain network operations, dynamics from the energy sources may lead to service interruption or performance degradation when the sources are unavailable. Recent advances in wireless energy transfer have opened up a new dimension to resolve the network lifetime problem. In this paper, we present an overview of the wireless energy transfer techniques and recent developments to apply these techniques in various sensing applications. We also show how this novel technology can be integrated with classic data collection applications and envision future directions in this area.

Abstract:This paper discusses metrics and evaluation methods for energy efficiency in wireless networks. It is proposed that carbon emissions are the standard for measuring energy efficiency, and energy efficiency is evaluated according to different network loads. Using the metric model, several methods are available for reducing energy consumption, including decreasing equipment usage, radio resource scheduling, and node cooperation. Monitoring and evaluating energy efficiency should also be added to wireless network protocols as an extra module. Technical challenges associated with optimizing and evaluating energy efficiency are discussed in conclusion.

Abstract:Wireless networking allows users to access information and services regardless of location and physical infrastructure. It is a fast growing technology due to its availability of wireless devices, flexibility, ease of installation and configuration. With this rapid expansion of information and Communication Technology (ICT), the consumption of energy is also increasing. In the early age of wireless technology, computing infrastructure focused on everywhere access, capacity and speed of technology. But now computing infrastructure should be energy efficient because, in wireless networking, devices are mostly powered by a battery that is a limited source of energy and is a challenge for the researchers. In computing infrastructure energy saving and environmental protection has become a global demand. This paper proposed a computing infrastructure based on green computing for energy efficient wireless networking. Further, some challenges and techniques like power consumption in network architecture, algorithm efficiency, virtualization, and dynamic power saving will be discussed to make energy efficient computing infrastructure.

Abstract:Wireless communication has nowadays become one of the major worldwide causes of energy consumption in the field of ICT, with a devastating impact in terms of pollution and energy waste. As a result, the past decade has witnessed tremendous efforts and progress made by both the industry and academia for improving energy and power efficiency in current and emerging wireless communication networks, among which cognitive and cooperative communication are proposed as key technologies to increase both spectrum and energy efficiency. In this article, we provide a comprehensive survey of the green cognitive and cooperative communication and networking techniques from its characteristics point of view to operational details in the eventual deployment. We present a systematic overview on the tools and techniques that can be used to solve problems arising in energy efficiency optimization problem in this context. The need to incorporate green concepts such as multi-input and multi-output, multi-rate, and multi-carrier systems, short-range low-power communication using small cell networks, and machine to machine communication in emerging and advanced wireless communication technologies is also addressed. Finally, we highlight design challenges and open issues in embracing green technologies in different and cross layers of communication and networking.

Abstract:The telecommunications and information community today is facing daunting challenges but also embracing great opportunities. The unprecedented expansion of wireline and wireless networks has resulted in a tremendous increase in energy consumption and left a significant environmental footprint. Recently, it has been reported that energy costs can account for as much as half of a mobile service provider's annual operating expenses. If the aggregate energy consumption of networking devices were to follow the growth trajectories of Internet traffic (i.e., about 50 percent per year), the environmental and financial consequences would be dire. Thus, making information and communications technology (ICT) equipment and applications energy-efficient could not only have a tangible positive impact on the environment, but also help telecommunications operators attain long-term profitability. Moreover, energy-efficient communications can help the world reduce its dependence on fossil fuel, enable demand response and distributed energy resources, and ultimately achieve sustainable prosperity. Accordingly, a myriad of communications and information technologies have already been exploited by the global smart grid initiatives to empower the conventional power grid to support two-way energy and information flow.

Abstract:Reducing energy consumption in wireless communications has attracted increasing attention recently. Advanced physical layer techniques such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), cognitive radio, network coding, cooperative communication, etc.; new network architectures such as heterogeneous networks, distributed antennas, multi-hop cellulars, etc.; as well as radio and network resource management schemes such as various cross-layer optimization algorithms, dynamic power saving, multiple radio access technologies coordination, etc. have been proposed to address this issue. In this article, we overview these technologies and present the state-of-the-art on each aspect. Some challenges that need to be solved in the area are also described.

Energy Efficient Design of Cognitive Small Cells

Abstract:Heterogeneous networks consisting of a macrocell tier and a small cell tier are considered an attractive solution to cope with the fierce increase of mobile traffic demand. Nevertheless, a massive deployment of small cell access points (SAPs) leads also to a considerable increase in energy consumption. Motivated by growing environmental awareness and the high price of energy, the design of energy efficient wireless systems for both macrocells and small cells becomes crucial. In this work, we analyze the trade-off between traffic offloading from the macrocell and the energy consumption of the small cell. Using tools from stochastic geometry, we define the user detection performance of the SAP and derive the small cell capacity accounting for the uncertainties associated with the random position of the user, the propagation channel, activity of the users, and the aggregate network interference. The proposed framework yields design guidelines for energy efficient small cells.

Abstract:Energy consumption is becoming an increasingly important issue throughout the community. For network operators in particular it is a concern as networks expand to deliver increasing traffic levels to increasing numbers of customers. The majority of the energy used by the Internet today is consumed in the access network, and this will continue to be the case for the short-to-mid-term future. Access technologies should thus be a prime focus for energy use mitigation. In this article, we present a detailed analysis of energy consumption in current and future access networks. We present the energy consumption of DSL, HFC networks, passive optical networks, fiber to the node, point-to-point optical systems, UMTS (W-CDMA), and WiMAX. Optical access networks are the most energy efficient of the available access technologies.

Abstract:Wireless energy transfer (WET) is emerging as a promising paradigm that provides sustainability for pervasive battery-powered devices to complete various tasks. Due to high attenuation of WET, it is crucial to design new architecture that conserves energy while guaranteeing task completion. In this paper, we propose an energy bank-based crowdsourcing framework and an incentive mechanism for energy conservation in wireless-powered task-oriented networks. An employer device outsources the whole or a part of its task to several worker devices and pays them energy as reward. Through energy-service trading, the employer consumes less energy and workers make energy profits. The virtual energy bank keeps accounts for all devices, authenticates the trading, and settles payments through a lossless bookkeeping-like manner. We analyze the employer’s expense-minimized and workers’ profit-maximized decisions and prove that the optimal decisions compose a Stackelberg equilibrium. To quantify the potential in energy saving, we further apply the framework to a relay-based sensor network where a source employs relays to forward data with a minimum rate requirement. An algorithm is developed for the NP-hard expense minimization problem. The simulation results reveal that our proposed framework and mechanism improve the energy efficiency by providing a win-win situation for both sides.

Abstract:Although information and communications technologies (ICTs) have the potential of enabling powerful social, economic and environmental benefits, ICT systems give a non-negligible contribution to world electricity consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint. This contribution will sustain since the increased demand for user's connectivity and an explosion of traffic volumes necessitate continuous expansion of current ICTs services and deployment of new infrastructures and technologies which must ensure the expected user experiences and performance. In this paper, analyses of costs for the global annual energy consumption of telecommunication networks, estimation of ICT sector CO2 footprint contribution and predictions of energy consumption of all connected user-related devices and equipment in the period 2011-2030 are presented. Since presented estimations of network energy consumption trends for main communication sectors by 2030 shows that highest contribution to global energy consumption will come from wireless access networks and data centres (DCs), the rest of the paper analyses technologies and concepts which can contribute to the energy-efficiency improvements of these two sectors. More specifically, different paradigms for wireless access networks such as millimetre-wave communications, Long-Term Evolution in unlicensed spectrum, ultra-dense heterogeneous networks, device-to-device communications and massive multiple-input multiple-output communications have been analysed as possible technologies for improvement of wireless networks energy efficiency. Additionally, approaches related to the DC resource management, DCs power management, green DC monitoring and thermal management in DCs have been discussed as promising approaches to improvement of DC power usage efficiency. For each of analysed technologies, future research challenges and open issues have been summarised and discussed. Lastly, an overview of the accepted papers in the Special Issue dedicated to the green, energy-efficient and sustainable networks is presented.

Abstract:The energy consumption problem in the mobile industry has become crucial. For the sustainable growth of the mobile industry, energy efficiency (EE) of wireless systems has to be significantly improved. Plenty of efforts have been invested in achieving green wireless communications. This article provides an overview of network energy saving studies currently conducted in the 3GPP LTE standard body. The aim is to gain a better understanding of energy consumption and identify key EE research problems in wireless access networks. Classifying network energy saving technologies into the time, frequency, and spatial domains, the main solutions in each domain are described briefly. As presently the attention is mainly focused on solutions involving a single radio base station, we believe network solutions involving multiple networks/systems will be the most promising technologies toward green wireless access networks.

Abstract:This article provides an overview on research in energy-efficient wireless networks during the past decade and discusses its potential applications toward the fifth generation cellular systems. After analyzing the trade-off between spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency, various research results are summarized within a framework of energy-efficient resource allocation with optimization as a common tool. Then potential energy efficiency improving approaches in both physical layer and deployment aspects are provided. Finally, energy efficiency related open problems in massive multiple-input multiple- output, device-to-device communications, ultra dense networks, and other emerging technologies are identified.

Abstract:As wireless communications experience exponential growth, energy consumption has became a crucial problem in the wireless industry.Energy efficiency of wireless systems has to be significantly improved in order to guarantee the sustainable growth of the wireless industry.Plenty of efforts have been carried on to achieve so called green wireless world.In this paper, focusing on energy saving in wireless access networks, we provide an overview on energy saving studies currently conducted in 3GPP LTE standard body.The aim of the paper is to gain a better understanding on energy consumption problems in wireless access networks and identify key research problems in this field.Currently most of research focus on base station energy saving with efforts to reduce energy consumed by power amplifiers.Less attention are spent on the network level.We believe a holistic network level solution based on novel architecture and methods, such as relay, user cooperation, as well as cognitive approaches, will be prosing enablers towards green wireless access networks.

Abstract:Due to the growing impact of the information and communications technology (ICT) sector on electricity usage and greenhouse gas emissions, telecommunication networks require new solutions which will enable the improvement of the energy efficiency of networks. Access networks, which are responsible for the last mile of connectivity and also for one of the largest shares in network energy consumption, are viable candidates for the implementation of new protocols, models and methods which will contribute to the reduction of the energy consumption of such networks. Among the different types of access networks, hybrid fiber–wireless (FiWi) networks are a type of network that combines the capacity and reliability of optical networks with the flexibility and availability of wireless networks, and as such, FiWi networks have begun to be extensively used in modern access networks. However, due to the advent of high-bandwidth applications and Internet of Things networks, the increased energy consumption of FiWi networks has become one of the most concerning challenges required to be addressed. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the progress in approaches for improving the energy efficiency (EE) of different types of FiWi networks, which include the radio-and-fiber (R&F) networks, the radio-over-fiber networks (RoF), the FiWi networks based on multi-access edge computing (MEC) and the software-defined network (SDN)-based FiWi networks. It also discusses future directions for improving the EE in the FiWi networks.

Energy-Efficient Softwarized Networks: A Survey

Abstract:With the dynamic demands and stringent requirements of various applications, networks need to be high-performance, scalable, and adaptive to changes. Researchers and industries view network softwarization as the best enabler for the evolution of networking to tackle current and prospective challenges. Network softwarization must provide programmability and flexibility to network infrastructures and allow agile management, along with higher control for operators. While satisfying the demands and requirements of network services, energy cannot be overlooked, considering the effects on the sustainability of the environment and business. This paper discusses energy efficiency in modern and future networks with three network softwarization technologies: SDN, NFV, and NS, introduced in an energy-oriented context. With that framework in mind, we review the literature based on network scenarios, control/MANO layers, and energy-efficiency strategies. Following that, we compare the references regarding approach, evaluation method, criterion, and metric attributes to demonstrate the state-of-the-art. Last, we analyze the classified literature, summarize lessons learned, and present ten essential concerns to open discussions about future research opportunities on energy-efficient softwarized networks.

Abstract:The growing popularity of Internet of Things (IoT) applications brings new challenges to the wireless communication community. Numerous smart devices and sensors within IoT will generate a massive amount of short data packets. Future wireless transmission systems need to support the reliable transmission of such small data with extremely high energy efficiency. In this article, we introduce a novel data-oriented approach for characterizing the energy efficiency of wireless transmission strategies for IoT applications. Specifically, we present new energy efficiency performance limits targeting at individual data transmission sessions. Through preliminary analysis on two channel-adaptive transmission strategies, we develop several important design guidelines on green transmission of small data. We also present several promising future applications of the proposed data-oriented energy efficiency characterization.
