Abstract:We recall briefly the displacement rank approach to the computations with structured matrices, which we trace back to the seminal paper by Kailath, Kung, and Morf [ J. Math. Anal. Appl., 68 (1979), pp. 395--407]. The concluding stage of the computations is the recovery of the output from its compressed representation via the associated displacement operator L. The recovery amounts to the inversion of the operator. That is, one must express a structured matrix M via its image L(M). We show a general method for obtaining such expressions that works for all displacement operators (under only the mildest nonsingularity assumptions) and thus provides the foundation for the displacement rank approach to practical computations with structured matrices. We also apply our techniques to specify the expressions for various important classes of matrices. Besides unified derivation of several known formulae, we obtain some new ones, in particular, for the matrices associated with the tangential Nevanlinna--Pick problems. This enables acceleration of the known solution algorithms. We show several new matrix representations of the problem in the important confluent case. Finally, we substantially improve the known estimates for the norms of the inverse displacement operators, which are critical numerical parameters for computations based on the displacement approach.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the displacement rank of the Drazin inverse. Both Sylvester displacement and the generalized displacement are discussed. We present upper bounds for the ranks of the displacements of the Drazin inverse. The general results are applied to the group inverse of a structured matrix such as close-to-Toeplitz, generalized Cauchy, Toeplitz-plus-Hankel, and Bezoutians.

Abstract:A matrix (and any associated linear system) will be referred to as structured if it has a small displacement rank. It is known that the inverse of a structured matrix is structured, which allows fast inversion (or solution), and reduced storage requirements. According to two definitions of displacement structure of practical interest, it is shown here that several types of inverses are also structured, including the Moore-Penrose inverse of rank-deficient matrices.

Abstract:In this article we study the structure and properties of g-inverse M− of the bordered matrixM=ABC0,which is partitioned conforming with M,M−=D1D2D3D4by applying the multiple quotient singular value decomposition QQ-SVD. From the structure of M−, we discuss the relations among D1,D2,D3 and D4, and derive equivalent conditions for M− to be a bordered matrix. By studying D1 in M−, we obtain some equivalent conditions for D1 to be a g-inverse of A.

Abstract:In this paper, the module-algebra structures of U-q(sl(m + 1)) = H(e(i), f(i), k(i)(+/- 1))(1 <= i <= m)., on the coordinate algebra of quantum vector spaces are studied. We denote the coordinate algebra of quantum n-dimensional vector space by A(q)(n). As our main result, first, we give a complete classification of module-algebra structures of U-p(sl(m + 1)) on A(q)(3) when k(i) is an element of Aut L(A(q)(3)) as actions on A(q)(3) for i = 1,...,m and m >= 2 and with the same method, on A(q)(2), all module-algebra structures of U-q(sl(m + 1)) are characterized. Lastly, the module-algebra structures of U-q(sl(m + 1)) on A(q)(n) are obtained for any n >= 4.

Abstract:Several algebraic criteria, reflecting displacement properties of transformation groups, have been used in the past years to prove vanishing of bounded cohomology and stable commutator length. Recently, the authors introduced the property of commuting cyclic conjugates, a new displacement technique that is widely applicable and provides vanishing of the bounded cohomology in all positive degrees and all dual separable coefficients. In this note we consider the most recent along with the by now classical displacement techniques and we study implications among them as well as counterexamples.

Abstract:For any n×n complex matrix A, let Ag be the group inverse of A. When A is singular, a matrix B=A+E is said to be an acute perturbation of A, if ‖E‖ is small and the spectral radius ρ(BgB−AgA)<1. The acute perturbation coincides with the stable perturbation of the group inverse, if the matrix B satisfies condition:R(B)∩N(A)={0},N(B)∩R(A)={0} which was introduced by Castro-González et al. (2008) [8]. Furthermore, several examples are provided to illustrate the acute perturbation of the group inverse.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix with corresponding Kac--Moody algebra $\frak{g}$ over ${\mathbb Q}$. Let $V=V^{\lambda}$ be an integrable highest weight $\frak{g}$-module and let $V_{\mathbb Z}=V^{\lambda}_{\mathbb Z}$ be a ${\mathbb Z}Z$-form of $V$. Let $G$ be an associated minimal representation-theoretic Kac--Moody group and let $G({\mathbb Z})$ be its integral subgroup. Let $\Gamma({\mathbb Z})$ be the Chevalley subgroup of $G$, that is, the subgroup that stabilizes the lattice $V_{{\mathbb Z}}$ in $V$. For a subgroup $M$ of $G$, we say that $M$ is integral if $M\cap G({\mathbb Z})=M\cap \Gamma({\mathbb Z})$ and that $M$ is strongly integral if there exists $v\in V^{\lambda}_{\mathbb Z}$ such that, for all $g\in M$, $g\cdot v\in V_{\mathbb{Z}}$ implies $g\in G({\mathbb{Z}})$. We prove strong integrality of inversion subgroups $U_{(w)}$ of $G$ where, for $w\in W$, $U_{(w)}$ is the the group generated by positive real root groups that are flipped to negative roots by $w^{-1}$. We use this to prove strong integrality of subgroups of the unipotent subgroup $U$ of $G$ generated by commuting real root groups. When $A$ has rank 2, this gives strong integrality of subgroups $U_1$ and $U_2$ where $U=U_{1}{\Large{*}}\ U_{2}$ and each $U_{i}$ is generated by `half' the positive real roots.

Abstract:This paper presents algebraic methods for the study of polynomial relative invariants, when the group G formed by the symmetries and relative symmetries is a compact Lie group. We deal with the case when the subgroup H of symmetries is normal in G with index m, m greater or equal to 2. For this, we develop the invariant theory of compact Lie groups acting on complex vector spaces. This is the starting point for the study of relative invariants and the computation of their generators. We first obtain the space of the invariants under the subgroup $H$ of $\Gamma$ as a direct sum of $m$ submodules over the ring of invariants under the whole group. Then, based on this decomposition, we construct a Hilbert basis of the ring of G-invariants from a Hilbert basis of the ring of H-invariants. In both results the knowledge of the relative Reynolds operators defined on H-invariants is shown to be an essential tool to obtain the invariants under the whole group. The theory is illustrated with some examples.

Abstract:An almost Abelian group is a non-Abelian Lie group with a codimension 1 Abelian subgroup. This paper investigates invariant Hermitian and Kähler structures on connected complex almost Abelian groups. We find explicit formulas for the left and right Haar measures, the modular function, and left and right generator vector fields on simply connected complex almost Abelian groups. From the generator fields, we obtain invariant vector and tensor field frames, allowing us to find an explicit form for all invariant tensor fields. Namely, all such invariant tensor fields have constant coefficients in the invariant frame. From this, we classify all invariant Hermitian forms on complex simply connected almost Abelian groups, and we prove the nonexistence of invariant Kähler forms on all such groups. Via constructions involving the pullback of the quotient map, we extend the explicit description of invariant Hermitian structures and the nonexistence of Kähler structures to connected almost Abelian groups.

Abstract:The theory of monotone operators plays a major role in modern optimization and many areas of nonlinera analysis. The central classes of monotone operators are matrices with a positive semidefinite symmetric part and subsifferential operators. In this paper, we complete our study to the displacement mappings. We derive formulas for set-valued and Moore-Penrose inverses. We also give a comprehensive study of the the operators ($(1/2) {\rm Id} + T$ and its inverse) and provide a formula for $((1/2) {\rm Id} + T)^{-1}$. We illustrate our results by considering the reflected and the projection operators to closed linear subspaces.
