Abstract:It is highly desirable to synthesize and deploy low-cost and highly efficient catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to catalyze water splitting. We show that N/C doped amorphous iridium oxide combines the benefits of nano-size (approximately 2 nm), which results in exposure to large active surface areas and features of oxygen defects, which make for an electronic structure suitable for the OER. Systematic studies indicate that the OER activity of the iridium oxide catalyst is accelerated by the effect of the structure and chemical state of the iridium element. Remarkably, the N/C doped amorphous iridium oxide catalyst shows a lower cell voltage of 1.774 V at 1.5 A cm−2, compared with IrO2 (1.847 V at 1.5 A cm−2), and it can maintain such a high current density for over 200 h without noticeable performance deterioration. This work provides a promising method for the improving OER electrocatalysts and the construction of an efficient and stable PEM water cracking system.

Abstract:It is crucial but challenging to reduce the required noble‐metal loading without compromising the catalytic performance of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. This study presents a highly active OER catalyst composed of IrO2 with Ir rich surface (IrO2@Ir) nanoparticles supported over nano TiN coated with TiOxNy (IrO2@Ir/TiN). The present approach demonstrates superior OER catalysts with high activity through small, uniformly dispersed IrO2@Ir nanoparticles, along with high durability owing to robust catalyst support and strong catalyst‐support interaction. The synthesized IrO2@Ir/TiN with an Ir loading of 40 wt% exhibits a mass‐normalized OER activity of 637 AgIr‐1, which is 2.4 times that of the unsupported commercial benchmark IrO2 OER electrocatalyst. The fine nanoparticles and high activity enable significant (~60%) reduction in the Ir metal loading required to obtain equivalent OER performance. In addition, when evaluated through an accelerated stress test using potential cycling, the catalyst exhibits outstanding durability (79% retention) compared to that of the commercial equivalent (66% retention). The OER activity loss was attributed to the catalyst dissolution (30% loss) and the catalyst particle growth (70%), with no measurable loss due to the TiN support corrosion. The development of ultra‐fine IrO2@Ir nanoparticles and robust ceramic catalyst support significantly improved the Ir utilization and open a new perspective for supported OER catalyst.

Abstract:Herein, abundant and uniform nanopores with sub-3-nm sizes are introduced to 1.5 nm-thick nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) ultrathin nanosheets via an etching-aging process, realizing remarkable enhancement in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Detailed analyses revealed that the NiFe LDH phase around the nanopores can be preferentially oxidized into electroactive Fe:NiOOH phase. In addition, the buffering space provided by the nanopores can effectively avoid structural deformation during repeated redox cycling, leading to better electrochemical stability, which synergistically make the catalyst a promising candidate for commercial water splitting. This work highlights the positive role of porous structure in accelerating the formation of active phases beyond just increment of surface area, which can provide insight in designing advanced catalysts.
Highly Active and Stable IrO2 and IrO2–Ta2O5 Catalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of nanosized iridium oxide-nanosheet-like based electrocatalysts synthesized by a modified Adams method is reported in this work. Cysteamine hydrochloride was introduced during the synthesis of IrO2 to induce the evo-lution of nanosheet-like morphology from spherical particles. The IrO2 crystallinity prepared by the modified Adams method was greatly affected by calcination temperature. When the temperature increases to 400 & DEG;C, the resulted iridium oxide transitions from pseudo -amorphous to crystal rutile type. Electrochemical evaluation results show that the IrO2 synthesized at 400 & DEG;C performs the best in terms of enhanced mass activity (1.104 A mg-1@1.6 V) and lower overpotential (315 mV@10 mA cm-2) as compared with the counterparts prepared at other temperatures. Ta2O5 with different molar ratios of Ir/Ta was incorporated to further improve the stability of iridium oxide and to reduce its usage as anode catalyst. Ultrathin IrO2-Ta2O5 nanosheets with optimized Ir/Ta = 7: 3 M ratio outperform the commercial IrO2 benchmark in terms of OER activity and stability. The overpotential of IrO2-Ta2O5(7: 3) is at 326 mV@10 mA cm-2, and its mass activity is as high as 0.9 A mg-1@1.6 V. Nanoporous Iridium-Based Alloy Nanowires as Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts Toward Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Acidic proton exchange membrane water electrolysis is a prospective energy conversion technology for future hydrogen production. However, its wide application is limited by the excessive dependence of oxygen evolution reaction on precious metals at anode. To address this issue, herein, we report a class of IrM (M = Ni, Co, Fe) catalysts with diluted Ir content fabricated via a eutectic-directed self-templating strategy. Manipulated by the eutectic reaction and dealloying inheritance effect, the IrM catalysts show a unique network structure composed of intertwining nanoporous nanowires. The catalytic activities of IrM nanowires show a transition-metal-dependent feature, among which IrNi delivers the best activity with an exceptionally low overpotential to drive 10 mA cm-2 (283 mV) and a high mass activity at 1.53 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (0.732 A mg-1). Such performance represents a major leap forward compared to that of commercial IrO2 and most of state-of-the-art Ir-based acidic catalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction. First-principles calculations indicate that the 3d transition-metal-dependent catalytic activity of IrM electrocatalysts is related to ligand effect, wherein the negative shift of Ir d-band center after alloying can effectively weaken the adsorption of reaction intermediates.

Abstract:Exploring advanced electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance in pursuing efficient and sustainable hydrogen production via electrolytic water splitting. Considering the structure-activity-stability relationship for designing advanced OER catalysts, two-dimensional (2D) porous catalyst with single crystallinity is deemed to be an ideal platform which could simultaneously endow enriched active sites, facile mass and charge transport ability as well as robust structural stability. Herein, we proposed a facile 2D confined topotactic phase transformation approach, which realizes the fabrication of highly porous single-crystalline Co3O4 nanosheets with in-situ surface modification of amorphous Co-Pi active species. Benefitted from the highly exposed undercoordinated cobalt sites, facilitated mass transport and facile 2D charge transfer pathway, the Co-Pi/Co3O4 hybrid porous nanosheets display enhanced OER activity with obvious pre-oxidation-induced activation. In addition, the operational stability was significantly improved owing to the strengthened structural stability which effectively buffers the internal strains and avoids the structural collapse during the electrochemical process. This work proposed a facile and mild method for the synthesis of amorphous/single-crystalline hybrid porous materials, and the achievement of synergistic modulation of active site density and charge transfer ability via targeted microstructural construction will shed light on catalyst design in the future.

Abstract:It still remains a challenge to simultaneously optimize the nanostructure and electronic structure of electrocatalysts of noble‐metal‐based electrocatalysts to improve their performance and reduce their noble metal loadings, in which the dispersion and activity of the noble metal components play an important role. A series of hybrids of noble metal nanocrystals (NMNCs) and two‐dimensional metal‐organic framework (2D MOF) nanosheets are designed and synthesized by a facile, fast, and general approach, in which NMNC dispersion is quickly mixed with MOF precursors at room temperature. The NMNCs/2D MOF hybrids, denoted as M‐Ni‐NS (M = Ir, Ru or Pt, etc.), are assembled by taking advantage of abundant O‐atom arrays on the surface the of 2D MOF nanosheets and they enable excellent dispersity and stability. Experimental and computational results show that the M‐O‐Ni bridging bonds realize successful tuning of the electronic structure of active sites and modify their activity. Taken together with the merits of the nanostructure of the 2D MOF support, this multiscale optimization strategy produces Ir‐Ni‐NS electrocatalysts with excellent performance for the oxygen evolution reaction, achieving a low overpotential of 270 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline media and long time stability.

Abstract:Rational design of Ir-based electrocatalyst with high performance and low cost remains as an urgent requirement to speed up the sluggish acidic water oxidation to produce hydrogen in renewable energy conversion and storage systems. In this work, the highly dispersed IrOx nanoparticles are fabricated on MoO3 sheets coated Ti meshes (c-IrOx-MoO3/Ti) as efficient electrocatalytic electrodes for acidic water oxidation. The heterogeneous c-IrOx-MoO3/Ti catalysts show much higher acidic oxygen evolution reaction activity (∼200 mV overpotentials at 10 mA cm−2) and long-term stability (longer than 130 h at 100 mA cm−2) with extremely low Ir content (∼28.35 μgIr cm−2) as compared to the IrOx/Ti and commercial IrO2 catalysts. The special intertwined formation of MoO3 sheets through electrodeposition effectively promotes the uniform dispersion of IrOx nanoparticles and the electrocatalytic performance. Theoretical calculations reveal that the electronic modulation on the MoO3-IrOx heterogeneous interface optimized the adsorbed energies for oxygen intermediates on the active Ir sites of the catalysts. The self-assembled proton exchange membrane single-cell electrolyzer test further verifies that the fabricated c-IrOx-MoO3/Ti catalysts demonstrate a greatly lower voltage and higher stability for water electrolysis than the commercial IrO2 catalysts. This work provides a new pathway to designing highly active and acid-resistant Ti-supported water oxidation catalysts with ultra-low Ir content.

Abstract:Iridium (Ir)-based electrocatalysts are widely explored as benchmarks for acidic oxygen evolution reactions (OERs). However, further enhancing their catalytic activity remains challenging due to the difficulty in identifying active species and unfavorable architectures. In this work, we synthesized ultrathin Ir-IrOx/C nanosheets with ordered interlayer space for enhanced OER by a nanoconfined self-assembly strategy, employing block copolymer formed stable end-merged lamellar micelles. The interlayer distance of the prepared Ir-IrOx/C nanosheets was well controlled at ∼20 nm and Ir-IrOx nanoparticles (∼2 nm) were uniformly distributed within the nanosheets. Importantly, the fabricated Ir-IrOx/C electrocatalysts display one of the lowest overpotential (η) of 198 mV at 10 mA cm-2geo during OER in an acid medium, benefiting from their features of mixed-valence states, rich electrophilic oxygen species (O(II-δ)-), and favorable mesostructured architectures. Both experimental and computational results reveal that the mixed valence and O(II-δ)- moieties of the 2D mesoporous Ir-IrOx/C catalysts with a shortened Ir-O(II-δ)- bond (1.91 Å) is the key active species for the enhancement of OER by balancing the adsorption free energy of oxygen-containing intermediates. This strategy thus opens an avenue for designing high performance 2D ordered mesoporous electrocatalysts through a nanoconfined self-assembly strategy for water oxidation and beyond.

Abstract:A nanostructural catalyst with long-term durability under harsh conditions is very important for an outstanding catalytic performance. Herein, a new ultrastable PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocatalyst was explored to improve the catalytic performance of carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation by virtue of the surface active lattice oxygen derived from strong metal-support interactions. Such a structure can overcome the issues of Co3O4-SiO2 inactivation by water vapor and the Pt inferior activity at low temperature. Further, Co3O4-SiO2 nanosheets endow superior structure stability under high temperatures of up to 800 °C, which gives long-term catalytic cyclability of PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocomposites for CO oxidation. Moreover, the large specific surface areas (294 m2 g-1) of the nanosheet structure can expose abundant surface active lattice oxygen, which significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of CO oxidation at 50 °C over 30 days without apparent aggregation of PtCo nanoparticles after 20 cycles from 50 to 400 °C. It can be expected to be a promising candidate as an ultrastable efficient catalyst.
Catalytic Activity of Nanometer-Sized Ir–O x Catalysts with Different Coordination Numbers for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:High-performance single-atomic Ir catalysts can significantly reduce the cost of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis catalysts due to their ultrahigh atomic utilization. However, difficulties remain for a thorough understanding of the coordination structures and their impact on the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution (OER) catalytic activities. In this study, a series of single Ir–O x catalysts with different coordination numbers (Ir–O x , where x represents the O coordination number) are simulated using density functional theory calculations, and the effect of coordination number variation on the catalyst performance is investigated. The results show that the optimized electronic structure of the single Ir–O5 coordination structure significantly reduces the free energy barrier of the rate-determining step and improves the OER catalytic activity of the catalyst by promoting electron transfer and optimizing *O intermediate adsorption. Guided by these results, we successfully prepared the single Ir–O5 structure by introducing Ir into Co3O4. At a current density of 10 mA/cm2, the electrocatalyst exhibits an overpotential of 266 mV, which is 40 mV lower than that of IrO2 with an Ir–O6 coordination structure. Additionally, the catalyst demonstrates excellent stability, maintaining uninterrupted operation for 900 h at a current density of 20 mA/cm2. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the preparation of high-performance iridium oxide catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Designing efficient and robust oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is of great importance for various electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications. Herein, we developed IrP 2 nanocrystals uniformly anchored in P,N-codoped carbon nanosheets (IrP 2 @PNC-NS) as highly active OER electrocatalysts. The ultrathin PNC-NS reconstructs an agaric-like porous structure, which can inhibit the agglomeration of the IrP 2 nanocrystals effectively. Moreover, the in-situ phosphatization leads to the formation of a strong electron interaction between PNC-NS and IrP 2 nanocrystals, endowing the heterostructure materials with satisfying synergistic effects. Benefiting from the collaborative advantages of ideal configuration structure and favorable synergistic effects, IrP 2 @PNC-NS exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 221 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and a small Tafel slope of 37.5 mV dec −1 . DFT calculations reveal that the synergistic effects derived from the IrP 2 /PNC interfaces, which can effectively tune the activation barriers towards facilitating the oxygen evolution process. This work provides new insight into the design of heterostructure materials for advanced OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Simultaneous realization of improved activity, enhanced stability, and reduced cost remains a desirable yet challenging goal in the search of electrocatalysis oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid. Herein, we report a novel strategy to prepare iridium single-atoms (Ir-SAs) on ultrathin NiCo2O4 porous nanosheets (Ir-NiCo2O4 NSs) by the co-electrodeposition method. The surface-exposed Ir-SAs couplings with oxygen vacancies (VO) exhibit boosting the catalysts OER activity and stability in acid media. They display superior OER performance with an ultralow overpotential of 240 mV at j = 10 mA cm-2 and long-term stability of 70 h in acid media. The TOFs of 1.13 and 6.70 s-1 at an overpotential of 300 and 370 mV also confirm their remarkable performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the prominent OER performance arises from the surface electronic exchange-and-transfer activities contributed by atomic Ir incorporation on the intrinsic VO existed NiCo2O4 surface. The atomic Ir sites substantially elevate the electronic activity of surface lower coordinated Co sites nearby VO, which facilitate the surface electronic exchange-and-transfer capabilities. With this trend, the preferred H2O activation and stabilized *O have been reached toward competitively lower overpotential. This is a generalized key for optimally boosting OER performance.
Low‐Coordinate Iridium Oxide Confined on Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:Highly active and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is greatly desired. Iridium oxide/graphitic carbon nitride (IrO2 /GCN) heterostructures are designed with low-coordinate IrO2 nanoparticles (NPs) confined on superhydrophilic highly stable GCN nanosheets for efficient acidic OER. The GCN nanosheets not only ensure the homogeneous distribution and confinement of IrO2 NPs but also endows the heterostructured catalyst system with a superhydrophilic surface, which can maximize the exposure of active sites and promotes mass diffusion. The coordination number of Ir atoms is decreased owing to the strong interaction between IrO2 and GCN, leading to lattice strain and increment of electron density around Ir sites and hence modulating the attachment between the catalyst and reaction intermediates. The optimized IrO2 /GCN heterostructure delivers not only by far the highest mass activity among the reported IrO2 -based catalysts but also decent durability.
Platinum Nanoparticles Decorated IrO 2 @MWCNT As an Improved Catalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:In this paper, IrO2 nanoparticles supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method and calcination process at different temperature. Platinum nanoparticles decorated IrO2@MWCNT-400 degrees C are prepared by chemical reduction method. The influence of MWCNTs and Pt on physicochemical properties and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of IrO2@MWCNT composites were studied via transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) and electrochemical methods. Among the samples, Pt/IrO2@MWCNT-400 degrees C exhibits better catalytic activity with an overpotential of 270 mV at the current density of 10 mAcm(-2) with a low Tafel slope of 85.1 mVdec(-1). The outstanding OER performance of Pt/IrO2@MWCNT-400 degrees C is ascribed to the introduction of the MWCNTs, which can not only act as a support to prevent agglomeration of IrO2 nanoparticles that produces high surface area of catalytic sites, but also facilitates electron transfer between IrO2 nanoparticles and MWCNTs. On the other hand, the Pt optimizes electronic structure for excellent electrocatalytic performance. Therefore, the Pt/IrO2@MWCNT-400 degrees C catalyst is a good choice for application in OER.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEM WEs) has a potential to produce high-purity green hydrogen. PEMWEs have been commercialized with the use of high loadings of the noble metal Ir-based anode catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). To lower the Ir loading amount, it is critically important to develop efficient catalysts with increased Ir utilization and higher OER activity. One-dimensional Ir oxide nanorod/nanoparticles catalysts supported on doped SnO2 with a unique microstructure were invented to show their exceptionally high activity in the OER catalysis, with the Ir-mass specific activity being 10 times higher than that of commercial IrOx catalyst at 1.5 V vs. RHE.[1] The experiment also found that the OER activation energy was greatly lower than that of commercial Ir oxide. The interaction between Ir oxide nanorod/nanoparticles and doped SnO2 support occurs a lower degree of Ir oxidation which allows the surface terminal oxygens to be closer together while allowing facile desorption of nonreactive oxygenated species. The electronic state of Ir oxide nanorod/nanoparticles catalysts could play an important role in facilitating the crucial step of the OER, thereby enhancing the OER activity. Abstract:High-performance single-atomic Ir catalysts can significantly reduce the cost of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis catalysts due to their ultrahigh atomic utilization. However, difficulties remain for a thorough understanding of the coordination structures and their impact on the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution (OER) catalytic activities. In this study, a series of single Ir-O-x catalysts with different coordination numbers (Ir-O-x, where x represents the O coordination number) are simulated using density functional theory calculations, and the effect of coordination number variation on the catalyst performance is investigated. The results show that the optimized electronic structure of the single Ir-O-5 coordination structure significantly reduces the free energy barrier of the rate-determining step and improves the OER catalytic activity of the catalyst by promoting electron transfer and optimizing *O intermediate adsorption. Guided by these results, we successfully prepared the single Ir-O-5 structure by introducing Ir into Co3O4. At a current density of 10 mA/cm(2), the electrocatalyst exhibits an overpotential of 266 mV, which is 40 mV lower than that of IrO2 with an Ir-O-6 coordination structure. Additionally, the catalyst demonstrates excellent stability, maintaining uninterrupted operation for 900 h at a current density of 20 mA/cm(2). These findings provide a theoretical basis for the preparation of high-performance iridium oxide catalysts.

Abstract:Exploring advanced electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance in pursuing efficient and sustainable hydrogen production via electrolytic water splitting. Considering the structure–activity-stability relationship for designing advanced OER catalysts, two-dimensional (2D) porous catalyst with single crystallinity is deemed to be an ideal platform which could simultaneously endow enriched active sites, facile mass and charge transport ability as well as robust structural stability. Herein, we proposed a facile 2D confined topotactic phase transformation approach, which realizes the fabrication of highly porous single-crystalline Co 3 O 4 nanosheets with in-situ surface modification of amorphous Co-Pi active species. Benefitted from the highly exposed undercoordinated cobalt sites, facilitated mass transport and facile 2D charge transfer pathway, the Co-Pi/Co 3 O 4 hybrid porous nanosheets display enhanced OER activity with obvious pre-oxidation-induced activation. In addition, the operational stability was significantly improved owing to the strengthened structural stability which effectively buffers the internal strains and avoids the structural collapse during the electrochemical process. This work proposed a facile and mild method for the synthesis of amorphous/single-crystalline hybrid porous materials, and the achievement of synergistic modulation of active site density and charge transfer ability via targeted microstructural construction will shed light on catalyst design in the future.
