Abstract:Efficientandinexpensiveoxygenevolutionreaction(OER)catalysts are essential for the electrochemical splitting of water into hydrogen fuel. Herein, we have successfully synthesized NiCoFe(OH)x nanosheets on Ni-Fe foam (NFF) by exploiting the Fenton-like effect of Co2+ and S2O82- to corrode the NFF foam. The as-prepared NiCoFe(OH)x/NFF exhibits the porous structure with the interconnected nanosheets that are firmly bonded to the conductive substrate of NFF, thereby enhancing ions and charge transfer kinetics. The unique structure and composition of NiCoFe(OH)x/NFF result in the low overpotentials of 200 and 262 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, as well as a low Tafel slope of 53.25 mV dec-1. In addition, NiCoFe(OH)x/NFF displays low overpotentials of 267 and 294 mV at a high current density of 100 mA cm-2 in simulated and real seawater, respectively. Furthermore, the assembled NiCoFe(OH)x//Pt/C water electrolysis cell has achieved a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low voltage of 1.49 V, and displayed the good stability with slight attenuation for 110 h. The high OER performance of NiCoFe(OH)x is attributed to the co-catalytic effect of the three metal ions and the interconnected porous nanosheet structure.

Abstract:The design and synthesis of efficient and affordable electrocatalysts for water oxidation are essential to advance water splitting technology, which depends on developing earth-abundant catalytic materials with rational compositions and structures. Here, we propose a facile synthesis of FeNiOOH nanosheets grown on FeNi foam (FNF) by in-situ chemical oxidation as a novel 3D electrode for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This FeNiOOH/FNF electrode shows outstanding electrocatalytic performance in alkaline electrolyte, including high OER activity that requires a small overpotential of 252 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2, favourable OER kinetics with a low Tafel slope of 36.8 mV dec−1, and excellent operation stability for at least 50 h. The superior OER properties are resulted from the highly active FeNi-oxyhydroxide species and advantageous nanosheet array structure. This work presents an effective strategy to rationalize self-supporting electrodes consisting of nanostructured arrays on conductive substrates, creating new opportunities to search for more advanced materials towards a sustainable energy future.

Abstract:Efficient, durable, and economical electrocatalysts are crucial for advancing energy technology by facilitating the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, ultrathin Ni-Fe metal-organic skeleton (MOF) nanosheets were created in situ on nickel foam (NiFe-UMNs/NF). The catalyst exhibited excellent OER catalytical abilities, with only 269 mV overpotentials at 250 mA cm-2. Besides, when integrated with Pt/C/NF, NiFe-UMNs/NF held the potential for application in industrial alkaline water electrolysis with an initial voltage retention of approximately 86% following a continuous operation of 100 h at a current density of 250 mA cm-2. The super performance of the NiFe-UMNs/NF catalyst was attributed to ultrathin morphology, super hydrophilicity, and synergistic effects between Ni and Fe within the MOF. In situ Raman showed that NiFe-UMNs were converted to NiFeOOH as the active species in the OER process. Density functional theory revealed that iron doping accelerated the rate-determining step and reduced the OER reaction energy barrier. This work elucidated a promising electrocatalyst for OER and enriched the practical implementation of MOF materials.

Abstract:Efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts are highly required for the cost-effective generation of clean energy from water splitting. For the first time, an integrated OER electrode based on one-step direct growth of metallic iron-nickel sulfide nanosheets on FeNi alloy foils (denoted as FeNi3 S2 /FeNi) is reported, and the origin of the enhanced OER activity is uncovered in combination with theoretical and experimental studies. The obtained FeNi3 S2 /FeNi electrode exhibits highly catalytic activity and long-term stability toward OER in strong alkaline solution, with a low overpotential of 282 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 54 mV dec-1 . The excellent activity and satisfactory stability suggest that the as-made electrode provides an attractive alternative to noble metal-based catalysts. Combined with density functional theory calculations, exceptional OER performance of FeNi3 S2 /FeNi results from a combination of efficient electron transfer properties, more active sites, the suitable O2 evolution kinetics and energetics benefited from Fe doping. This work not only simply constructs an excellent electrode for water oxidation, but also provides a deep understanding of the underlying nature of the enhanced OER performance, which may serve as a guide to develop highly effective and integrated OER electrodes for water splitting.
Porous high-entropy oxide nanosheets as highly-efficient electrocatalysts for water oxidation

Abstract:The controllable regulating strategy of composition and morphology for transition-metal-based high-entropy oxides is of significance for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but there are still major challenges. Herein, a universal and scalable precursor morphology-oriented strategy is developed to realize the rational synthesis of high-entropy oxides with uniform component distribution. The advantages of those materials with porous nanosheet morphology and high-entropy composition endow their high-efficient catalytic performance for OER. Remarkably, the optimized (FeCoNiCrZn) 3 O 4 catalyst shows the best catalytic activity with a small overpotential (216 mV@10 mA cm −2 ), low Tafel slope, excellent stability and high Faradaic efficiency of over 95% for O 2 gas. The experimental studies confirm the improved catalytic active area, reaction kinetics and interfacial behaviors of (FeCoNiCrZn) 3 O 4 . In situ spectral characterizations reveal its rapid formation of OOH* species and high-valence Ni-based active species for OER, indicating the significant promotion effect of Zn element for excellent catalytic performance. Our strategy offers a novel avenue for developing other advanced high-entropy oxides for energy-related catalytic systems.

Abstract:Highly active, durable, and inexpensive nanostructured catalysts are crucial for achieving efficient and economical electrochemical water splitting. Abstract:Herein, abundant and uniform nanopores with sub-3-nm sizes are introduced to 1.5 nm-thick nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) ultrathin nanosheets via an etching-aging process, realizing remarkable enhancement in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Detailed analyses revealed that the NiFe LDH phase around the nanopores can be preferentially oxidized into electroactive Fe:NiOOH phase. In addition, the buffering space provided by the nanopores can effectively avoid structural deformation during repeated redox cycling, leading to better electrochemical stability, which synergistically make the catalyst a promising candidate for commercial water splitting. This work highlights the positive role of porous structure in accelerating the formation of active phases beyond just increment of surface area, which can provide insight in designing advanced catalysts.

Abstract:A novel anion‐mediated kinetically controlled strategy is reported, coupled with cation‐induced geometric topology modulation, to directly synthesis FeNiOOH with ultra‐thin, densely packed nanosheet architectures. The resulting 3D hierarchical Ru/FeNiOOH@NiPOx nanorod catalyst exhibits superior OER performance, achieving an overpotential of 172 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and outstanding stability. FeNiOOH is regarded as the most stable active species in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the high oxidation energy of NiOOH poses a challenge to directly synthesize FeNiOOH as a real OER catalyst. Herein, an anion‐mediated kinetically controlled strategy is proposed, coupled with cation‐induced geometric topology modulation, to directly synthesis FeNiOOH with ultra‐thin, densely packed nanosheet architectures. Specifically, the Cl−‐mediated in situ generation of hypochlorous acid promotes the direct formation of NiFeOOH. Concurrently, high‐valence competitive Ru3+ mitigate electrostatic repulsion, fostering a compact and densely packed assembly of Ru/FeNiOOH nanosheet branches. Furthermore, the intrinsic electron‐capturing ability of FeOOH, in synergy with the stabilizing effect of doped Ru atoms, further promote the formation and stabilization high‐valence NiOOH. Consequently, the hierarchical Ru/FeNiOOH@NiPOx nanoarray catalyst displays exceptional OER performance, with an overpotential of 172 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and outstanding stability. This study provides a novel strategy to directly construct a real catalyst.

Abstract:FeCoNi spinel oxides nanosheets array directly supported on the Ni foam substrate were prepared via a facile wet chemical method with 2‐methylimidazole as a structure directing agent and subsequently annealing. The as‐prepared 0.1Fe‐CoNiO/NF offers high intrinsic catalytic activity, high surface area and good conductivity, resulting in enhanced activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the alkaline solution. It demonstrates an ultralow overpotentials of 240 mV at 10 mA cm ‐2 and a small Tafel slope of 36.8 mV dec ‐1 , with attractive durability during long‐term operation in 1 M KOH solution.

Abstract:An efficient bulk electrocatalyst is appealing to advance the efficiency of water electrolysis. In this study, we report a function-integrated bulk NiFeOx@NiFeP catalyst that exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability properties. This new catalyst possesses multiple advantages including three-dimensional (3D) nanoporous framework structure, excellent macro-conductivity, and unique Mott-Schottky architecture, which offers stereochemical and energetic flexibility to interact with reactants with multiple functions including large surface area, fast mass and charge transfers, and favorable catalysis kinetics. The bulk NiFeOx@NiFeP can serve simultaneously as catalyst and current collector, and catalyze both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as demonstrated with active and durable overall water splitting performances.

Abstract:The inherent sluggish kinetics of water oxidation is the core issue for electrochemical hydrogen production from water splitting. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with tunable porous structures, abundant coordination metal centers and large specific surface area are expected as efficient electrocatalysts. In this paper, FeNi-LDH/MOF composite nanostructures were successfully constructed on carbon cloth (CC) through partially converting iron-nickel layered double hydroxide (FeNi-LDH) into FeNi-MOF (NiFe(CN) 5 NO) by an in-situ semi-etching method. The MOF nanocrystals in this material are in-situ decorated on the surface of FeNi-LDH nanosheets, providing abundant open active sites and mass transfer channels for electrocatalysis. Thanks to the synergistic effect of the LDH and MOF, as well as the exceptional hierarchical architecture, the FeNi-LDH/MOF/CC as a self-supported electrode exhibits distinguished electrocatalytic OER performance, with a low overpotential of 263 mV@100 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 50.2 mV dec -1 in 1.0 M KOH. In addition, the catalyst exhibits good durability with almost constant current density during 24 h OER test. This work provides an effective way to design high-performance MOFs-based composite electrocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Because of sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), designing low-cost, highly active, and stable electrocatalysts for OER is important for the development of sustainable electrochemical water splitting. Here, {112} high-index facet exposed porous Co3O4 nanosheets with oxygen vacancies on the surface have been successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method followed by NaBH4 reduction. As compared with the pristine and other faceted porous Co3O4 nanosheets (e.g., {110} and {111}), the as-prepared {112} faceted porous nanosheets exhibit a much lower overpotential of 318 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Importantly, these nanosheets also give excellent electrochemical stability, displaying an insignificant change in the required overpotential at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 even after a 14 h long-term chronoamperometric test. All these superior OER activity and stability could be attributed to their unique hierarchical structures assembled by ultrathin porous nanosheets, {112} high-index exposed facets with higher ratio of Co2+/Co3+ and oxygen vacancies on the surface, which can substantially enhance the charge transfer rate and increase the number of active sites. All these findings not only demonstrate the potency of our Co3O4 nanosheets for efficient water oxidation but also provide further insights into developing cost-effective and high-performance catalysts for electrochemical applications.

Abstract:The development of non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts with high efficiency for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance for the practical application of electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, we have synthesized tri-metal-based FeMoV oxide nanosheets on three-dimensional nickel foam (FeMoV/NF) for the OER by a simple hydrothermal method. Thanks to the decreased charge-transfer resistance and modified electronic structure, the optimized Fe0.5Mo0.1V0.4/NF electrode exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 296 mV to deliver a current density of 100 mA cm–2 and a small Tafel slope of 48.9 mV dec–1 in a 1 M KOH solution; both values are much lower than those of commercial RuO2 supported on nickel foam (392 mV and 129 mV dec–1, respectively). This work may provide a promising strategy for the design of highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for the OER.

FeNi Nanoparticles Embedded Porous Nitrogen-Doped Nanocarbon As Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:It is significant and challenging to develop a highly active, hyper stable and low-cost novel oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst to replace the noble metal-based electrocatalysts for large-scale electrocatalytic water splitting. To settle such issue, for the first time, FeNi alloy nanosphere homogenously embedded porous nitrogen-doped nanocarbon (FeNi@NC) hybrid has been synthesized by pyrolyzing a precursor composite composed of nickel hexacyanoferrate and nitrogen-doped nanocarbon under the inert atmospheres without any further post-treatments. The as-prepared uniform FeNi alloy nanosphere embedded porous nitrogen-doped nanocarbon (FeNi@NC) hybrid exhibits a very low over-potential of 298 mV (vs. RHE) at current density of 10 mA cm(-2) , a small Tafel slope of 48.4 mV dec(-1) and excellent stability after 1.26 x 10(5) s (more than 35 h) at 10 mA cm(-2) towards OER. In addition, the mass normalized activity of FeNi@NC hybrid measured at fixed potential of 1.7 V (vs. RHE) is 295.9 A g(-1). The outstanding OER performance can be attributed to the porous nitrogen-doped nanocarbon structure, high specific surface area as well as good electrical conductivity. The results indicate that this work provides a new strategy to fabricate other transition bimetallic alloy embedded porous nitrogen-doped nanocarbon hybrid as OER electrocatalysts in the further. Abstract:Highly active, durable and cost-effective electrocatalysts for water oxidation to evolve oxygen gas hold a key to a range of renewable energy solutions including water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Here, we report the synthesis of ultrathin nickel iron layered double hydroxide nanoplates on mildly oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Incorporation of Fe into the nickel hydroxide induced the formation of NiFe-layered double hydroxide. The nanoplates were covalently attached to a network of nanotubes, affording excellent electrical wiring to the nanoplates. The ultra-thin Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide nanoplates/carbon nanotube complex was found to exhibit unusually high electro-catalytic activity and stability for oxygen evolution and outperformed commercial precious metal Ir catalysts.

Abstract:In this study, oxidation-resistive deficient TiO 2-x supported NiFe-based electrocatalysts were developed towards efficient and durable water splitting performance. The oxidation-resistive deficient TiO 2-x support with oxygen vacancies ensures good stability and electrical conductivity of the catalyst. The decorated NiFe and NiFeP nanosheets serve as efficient catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. In 1.0 M KOH, the 2-x and 2-x electrode show low overpotential for OER (300 mV) and HER (273 mV) at 100 mA cm -2 , respectively, and excellent stability performance in overall water splitting as well. In-situ Raman and theoretical analysis reveal that the in-situ formed Fe 3+ -doped NiOOH species are essential in catalyzing OER on 2-x , particularly the electron localization of surface Fe-O bonds offers lower energy barriers for OER elemental reactions and thus enhance its catalytic activity. This work provides an oxide-based catalyst support strategy for the development of stable and active overall water splitting catalysts and advances the insights on catalytic origin of NiFe-based catalysts as well.
