Abstract:Exploring low-cost, high-efficient and durable electrocatalysts to substitute for Ru, Ir-based noble metal catalysts is of great significance for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is in particular a sluggish anodic process in water oxidation and remains to be a major challenge that we are confronted with. Herein, we report nickel-iron diselenide hollow nanochains (denoted as NFSHNCs) synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal method working as the high performance OER catalyst. The formation of well-shaped NFSHNCs is due to the Kirkendall effect, in which NiFe alloy solid nanochains were employed as the precursors. The as-prepared NFSHNCs not only exhibit outstanding OER performance with low overpotential of 267 mV (at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2)) and small Tafel slope of 67 mV dec(-1), superior to the state-of-the-art commercial RuO2, but also deliver high durability with a dinky degradation of 5.3% after 12 h fierce test. To identify the electrocatalytic active sites, the Gibbs free energy differences (Delta G) related to the O* and OH* adsorption on NiFe selenides were calculated with density functional theory. The theoretical results corroborate the fact that the O* and OH* adsorption prefers to occur on both iron sites and the nickel sites (the one that in the vicinity of iron sites) because of the synergistic effects of electron configuration.

Abstract:Efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts are highly required for the cost-effective generation of clean energy from water splitting. For the first time, an integrated OER electrode based on one-step direct growth of metallic iron-nickel sulfide nanosheets on FeNi alloy foils (denoted as FeNi3 S2 /FeNi) is reported, and the origin of the enhanced OER activity is uncovered in combination with theoretical and experimental studies. The obtained FeNi3 S2 /FeNi electrode exhibits highly catalytic activity and long-term stability toward OER in strong alkaline solution, with a low overpotential of 282 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 54 mV dec-1 . The excellent activity and satisfactory stability suggest that the as-made electrode provides an attractive alternative to noble metal-based catalysts. Combined with density functional theory calculations, exceptional OER performance of FeNi3 S2 /FeNi results from a combination of efficient electron transfer properties, more active sites, the suitable O2 evolution kinetics and energetics benefited from Fe doping. This work not only simply constructs an excellent electrode for water oxidation, but also provides a deep understanding of the underlying nature of the enhanced OER performance, which may serve as a guide to develop highly effective and integrated OER electrodes for water splitting.
Heterogeneous FeNi2S4/Ni3S4 nanoparticles embedded CNT networks for efficient and stable water oxidation

Abstract:Development of efficient and reliable transition metal-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts has profound implications to achieve carbon-neutral economy in the future. Herein, a novel hybrid OER catalyst of heterogeneous FeNi2S4/Ni3S4 nanoparticles embedded CNT networks (FeNi2S4/Ni3S4@CNT) was prepared by a facile one-step hydrothermal reaction. The ultrafine heterogeneous nanoparticles of FeNi2S4 and Ni3S4 embedded CNT can expose abundant active sites and enhance the electrochemically active area; the electronic structure modulated by the bi-metallization of FeNi2S4 via partial substitution of Ni with Fe; the robust contact between conductive FeNi2S4 and Ni3S4 nanoparticles with abundant active sites on the surface and the CNT network with high conductivity can effectively promote the electron transfer; the 3D network with rich nanopores is beneficial to electrolyte penetration and gas release. These above merits and synergistic effects of FeNi2S4 and Ni3S4 endow the catalyst superior OER performances with an ultralow overpotential of 247 mV for the current density of 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 53.7 mV dec−1 and remarkable durability over 20 h, surpassing those of commercial OER catalyst RuO2. This work provides a synergistic OER boosting strategy via bi-metallization, heterogeneous nanoparticle distribution and conductive skeleton to develop non-precious-based electrocatalyst by a facile one-pot synthesis method.

Synthesis of self-supported NiCoFe(OH)x via fenton-like effect corrosion for highly efficient water oxidation

Abstract:Efficientandinexpensiveoxygenevolutionreaction(OER)catalysts are essential for the electrochemical splitting of water into hydrogen fuel. Herein, we have successfully synthesized NiCoFe(OH)x nanosheets on Ni-Fe foam (NFF) by exploiting the Fenton-like effect of Co2+ and S2O82- to corrode the NFF foam. The as-prepared NiCoFe(OH)x/NFF exhibits the porous structure with the interconnected nanosheets that are firmly bonded to the conductive substrate of NFF, thereby enhancing ions and charge transfer kinetics. The unique structure and composition of NiCoFe(OH)x/NFF result in the low overpotentials of 200 and 262 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, as well as a low Tafel slope of 53.25 mV dec-1. In addition, NiCoFe(OH)x/NFF displays low overpotentials of 267 and 294 mV at a high current density of 100 mA cm-2 in simulated and real seawater, respectively. Furthermore, the assembled NiCoFe(OH)x//Pt/C water electrolysis cell has achieved a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low voltage of 1.49 V, and displayed the good stability with slight attenuation for 110 h. The high OER performance of NiCoFe(OH)x is attributed to the co-catalytic effect of the three metal ions and the interconnected porous nanosheet structure.

Abstract:A novel anion‐mediated kinetically controlled strategy is reported, coupled with cation‐induced geometric topology modulation, to directly synthesis FeNiOOH with ultra‐thin, densely packed nanosheet architectures. The resulting 3D hierarchical Ru/FeNiOOH@NiPOx nanorod catalyst exhibits superior OER performance, achieving an overpotential of 172 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and outstanding stability. FeNiOOH is regarded as the most stable active species in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the high oxidation energy of NiOOH poses a challenge to directly synthesize FeNiOOH as a real OER catalyst. Herein, an anion‐mediated kinetically controlled strategy is proposed, coupled with cation‐induced geometric topology modulation, to directly synthesis FeNiOOH with ultra‐thin, densely packed nanosheet architectures. Specifically, the Cl−‐mediated in situ generation of hypochlorous acid promotes the direct formation of NiFeOOH. Concurrently, high‐valence competitive Ru3+ mitigate electrostatic repulsion, fostering a compact and densely packed assembly of Ru/FeNiOOH nanosheet branches. Furthermore, the intrinsic electron‐capturing ability of FeOOH, in synergy with the stabilizing effect of doped Ru atoms, further promote the formation and stabilization high‐valence NiOOH. Consequently, the hierarchical Ru/FeNiOOH@NiPOx nanoarray catalyst displays exceptional OER performance, with an overpotential of 172 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and outstanding stability. This study provides a novel strategy to directly construct a real catalyst.

Abstract:Highly active, durable, and inexpensive nanostructured catalysts are crucial for achieving efficient and economical electrochemical water splitting. However, developing efficient approaches to further improve the catalytic ability of the well-defined nanostructured catalysts is still a big challenge. Abstract:Efficient, durable, and economical electrocatalysts are crucial for advancing energy technology by facilitating the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, ultrathin Ni-Fe metal-organic skeleton (MOF) nanosheets were created in situ on nickel foam (NiFe-UMNs/NF). The catalyst exhibited excellent OER catalytical abilities, with only 269 mV overpotentials at 250 mA cm-2. Besides, when integrated with Pt/C/NF, NiFe-UMNs/NF held the potential for application in industrial alkaline water electrolysis with an initial voltage retention of approximately 86% following a continuous operation of 100 h at a current density of 250 mA cm-2. The super performance of the NiFe-UMNs/NF catalyst was attributed to ultrathin morphology, super hydrophilicity, and synergistic effects between Ni and Fe within the MOF. In situ Raman showed that NiFe-UMNs were converted to NiFeOOH as the active species in the OER process. Density functional theory revealed that iron doping accelerated the rate-determining step and reduced the OER reaction energy barrier. This work elucidated a promising electrocatalyst for OER and enriched the practical implementation of MOF materials.

Abstract:Developing low-cost electrocatalysts to replace precious Ir-based materials is key for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, we report atomically dispersed nickel coordinated with nitrogen and sulfur species in porous carbon nanosheets as an electrocatalyst exhibiting excellent activity and durability for OER with a low overpotential of 1.51 V at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 45 mV dec−1 in alkaline media. Such electrocatalyst represents the best among all reported transition metal- and/or heteroatom-doped carbon electrocatalysts and is even superior to benchmark Ir/C. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the well-dispersed molecular S|NiNx species act as active sites for catalyzing OER. The atomic structure of S|NiNx centers in the carbon matrix is clearly disclosed by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy together with computational simulations. An integrated photoanode of nanocarbon on a Fe2O3 nanosheet array enables highly active solar-driven oxygen production.

Amorphous NiFeB nanoparticles realizing highly active and stable oxygen evolving reaction for water splitting

Abstract:The development of highly efficient and inexpensive catalysts for oxygen evolving reactions (OERs) is extremely urgent for promoting the overall efficiency of water splitting. Herein we report the fabrication of a series of amorphous NiFeB nanoparticles with varying atomic ratios of Fe to (Ni + Fe) (χFe) by a facile chemical-reduction method. The amorphous NiFeB (χFe = 0.20) nanoparticles, combining the merits of in situ formation of borate-enriched NiFeOOH catalytic surface layers, intrinsic amorphous nanostructures, and an optimized degree of Fe doping, displayed highly active electrocatalytic performance towards the OER in a broad range of pH values (from alkaline to neutral conditions). The catalyst exhibited a relatively low overpotential of 216 mV with a Tafel slope of 40 mV/dec on Ni foam and 251 mV with a Tafel slope of 43 mV/dec on glassy carbon at 10 mA/cm2 in a 1 M KOH solution, demonstrating much greater OER efficiency than that of commercial RuO2. Long-term stability testing of the OER performance of NiFeB (χFe = 0.20) by chronoamperometry (overpotential (η) = 320 mV) over 200 h revealed no evidence of degradation. Facile, scalable synthesis and highly active water oxidation make the NiFeB nanoparticles very attractive for OER electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Exploring efficient and inexpensive oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is of great importance for various electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies. Ni-based electrocatalysts have been actively pursued because of their promising activity and earth abundance. However, the OER efficiency for most of the developed Ni-based electrocatalysts has been intrinsically limited due to their low electrical conductivity and poor active site exposure yield. Herein, we report metallic Ni3N nanosheets as an efficient OER electrocatalyst for the first time. The first-principles calculations and electrical transport property measurements unravel that the Ni3N is intrinsically metallic, and the carrier concentration can be remarkably improved with dimensional confinement. The EXAFS spectra provide solid evidence that the Ni3N nanosheets have disordered structure resultant of dimensional reduction, which then could provide more active sites for OER. Benefiting from enhanced electrical conductivity with metallic behavior and atomically disordered structure, the Ni3N nanosheets realize intrinsically improved OER activity compared with bulk Ni3N and NiO nanosheets. Our finding suggests that metallic nitride nanosheets could serve as a new group of OER electrocatalysts with excellent property.
Highly Efficient and Stable Water‐Oxidation Electrocatalysis with a Very Low Overpotential using FeNiP Substitutional‐Solid‐Solution Nanoplate Arrays

Abstract:The development of efficient water-oxidation electrocatalysts based on inexpensive and earth-abundant materials is significant to enable water splitting as a future renewable energy source. Herein, the synthesis of novel FeNiP solid-solution nanoplate (FeNiP-NP) arrays and their use as an active catalyst for high-performance water-oxidation catalysis are reported. The as-prepared FeNiP-NP catalyst on a 3D nickel foam substrate exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with a very low overpotential of only 180 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and an onset overpotential of 120 mV in 1.0 m KOH for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The slope of the Tafel plot is as low as 76.0 mV dec-1 . Furthermore, the long-term electrochemical stability of the FeNiP-NP electrode is investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) at 1.10-1.55 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), demonstrating very stable performance with negligible loss in activity after 1000 CV cycles. This present FeNiP-NP solid solution is thought to represent the best OER catalytic activity among the non-noble metal catalysts reported so far.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen is a promising strategy for future renewable energy conversion devices. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered as the bottleneck reaction in an overall water splitting system because it involves 4e(-) and 4H(+) transfer processes. Currently, it is highly desirable to explore low-cost alternative catalysts for OER at ambient conditions. Herein, we report for the first time that nickel phosphide (Ni2P) nanosheets can be facilely grown on Fe foam (FF) as an efficient electrocatalyst for OER with excellent durability and catalytic activity under alkaline conditions. To reach a current density of 10 mA/cm(2), the Ni2P-FF catalyst required a low overpotential of only 198 mV for OER. The catalyst's high OER activity and durability were well maintained at a high current density. The required overpotentials were only 267 and 313 mV to achieve the current densities of 100 and 300 mA/cm(2), respectively. The combination of low-cost Fe foam with Ni(2)xP provides a promising low-cost catalyst for large-scale application of electrocatalytic water splitting. Amorphous FeNiNbPC nanoprous structure for efficient and stable electrochemical oxygen evolution

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial process for water splitting. Reducing overpotential is a great challenge because of four electrons transfer and slow kinetics compared to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Highly efficient and stable OER catalyst with low-cost is important for industrial hydrogen production by water splitting. Here we report a simple approach to synthesize free-standing amorphous FexNi77-xNb3P13C7 with the nanoporous structure through electrochemical dealloying. The np-Fe50Ni27Nb3P13C7 exhibits remarkable OER catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 248 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 6 M KOH solution. Also, the np-Fe50Ni27Nb3P13C7 exhibits good long-term stability. The improved OER property is due to bimetallic synergy, decreased resistance of charge transfer, nanoporous structure, amorphous nature, and the generation of NiOOH during the OER process. The free-standing amorphous catalysts with nanoporous structure via electrodealloying method provide a promising approach to boost the performance of non-noble metal OER catalysts for the applications.

Abstract:Developing high-activity and capital-saving electrocatalysts for the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is important to improve the efficiency of water splitting. Herein, a facile reduction approach is employed to prepare metallic Ni-decorated amorphous nickel cobalt oxide (NiCoO x ) nanoarray electrocatalysts, with three-dimensional nickel foam (Ni/NiCoO x /NF) as substrate. Benefiting from abundant oxygen vacancies and preferred electron transport between metallic Ni and the NiCoO x substrate,the Ni/NiCoO x /NF delivers a current density of 50 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 348 mV in 1.0 M KOH toward OER, comparable with that of commercial RuO 2 (320 mV). Moreover, Ni/NiCoO x /NF is further served as an anodic material to assemble a two-electrode overall water splitting system (commercial Pt/C as the cathode), which achieves a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a low voltage of 1.589 V and displays reliable durability over at least 50 h (around 30 mA cm −2 ). This research offers an efficient way for generating catalysts with multi components via reduction of polymetallic oxides for electrocatalytic conversion of small molecules.

In-situ synthesis of free-standing FeNi-oxyhydroxide nanosheets as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for water oxidation

Abstract:The design and synthesis of efficient and affordable electrocatalysts for water oxidation are essential to advance water splitting technology, which depends on developing earth-abundant catalytic materials with rational compositions and structures. Here, we propose a facile synthesis of FeNiOOH nanosheets grown on FeNi foam (FNF) by in-situ chemical oxidation as a novel 3D electrode for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This FeNiOOH/FNF electrode shows outstanding electrocatalytic performance in alkaline electrolyte, including high OER activity that requires a small overpotential of 252 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2, favourable OER kinetics with a low Tafel slope of 36.8 mV dec−1, and excellent operation stability for at least 50 h. The superior OER properties are resulted from the highly active FeNi-oxyhydroxide species and advantageous nanosheet array structure. This work presents an effective strategy to rationalize self-supporting electrodes consisting of nanostructured arrays on conductive substrates, creating new opportunities to search for more advanced materials towards a sustainable energy future.

Abstract:Highly active, durable and cost-effective electrocatalysts for water oxidation to evolve oxygen gas hold a key to a range of renewable energy solutions including water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Here, we report the synthesis of ultrathin nickel iron layered double hydroxide nanoplates on mildly oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Incorporation of Fe into the nickel hydroxide induced the formation of NiFe-layered double hydroxide. The nanoplates were covalently attached to a network of nanotubes, affording excellent electrical wiring to the nanoplates. The ultra-thin Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide nanoplates/carbon nanotube complex was found to exhibit unusually high electro-catalytic activity and stability for oxygen evolution and outperformed commercial precious metal Ir catalysts.

Abstract:Designing and exploring efficient and stable Fe-based nanostructures catalyst is playing a critical role in the industrial application of water splitting. Herein, amorphous Fe–Ni bimetallic hydroxides film on the conductive FeS nanosheets supported by three-dimensional iron foam (IF) (denoted as FeNi(OH)x/FeS/IF) has been successfully synthesized by an ultrafast surface modification process (30 s). The fast surface reaction using FeS/IF as substrate in nickel nitrate solution facilitates the formation of bimetallic ultrathin film of FeNi(OH)x with enhanced performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Owing to the excellent conductivity, FeS nanosheets supported by IF may improve the dispersion and conductivity of FeNi(OH)x as active sites for OER. The physical characterizations confirm the closed interaction of FeNi(OH)x/FeS/IF, which suggests the validity of this facile surface modification. The electrochemical measurements show that FeNi(OH)x/FeS/IF only need a low overpotential of 273 mV to reach the 100 mA cm−2 (geometric current density) towards OER. The excellent catalytic performance can be attributed to the improved conductivity of substrate, a greater number of active sites and strong the synergistic effect of the Fe–Ni bimetallic hydroxides. The great long-term stability has been obtained. This work provides a simple route to produce advanced hierarchical nanostructure as electrocatalysts for OER.

Abstract:Efficient, stable, and cost-effective electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial for advancing large-scale water electrolysis for hydrogen production. In this study, we present a novel electrocatalyst featuring FeNi/Ni 2 P nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped porous carbon (FeNi/Ni 2 P@NC). The catalyst was prepared by pyrolyzing low-cost anion exchange resin (AER) loaded with non-precious metal salts, followed by phosphidation. The FeNi/Ni 2 P@NC catalyst benefits from the synergistic effects of the FeNi alloy, Ni 2 P phosphide, and N-doped porous carbon, which together enhance the number of active sites available for the OER. The large surface area of the material optimizes both electron transfer and mass diffusion pathways, leading to remarkable OER performance. At a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , FeNi/Ni 2 P@NC demonstrates an overpotential of 323 mV and a Tafel slope of 60.3 mV dec −1 , significantly outperforming the Tafel slope of 89.3 mV dec −1 observed for the precious metal RuO 2 . Furthermore, the carbon shell layer effectively mitigates nanoparticle corrosion, thereby improving the long-term stability of the catalyst. This study presents a novel approach for developing efficient, stable, and cost-effective carbon-based catalysts for water electrolysis.
