Abstract:The industrialization of hydrogen production technology through polymer electrolyte membrane water splitting faces challenges due to high iridium (Ir) loading on the anode catalyst layer. While rational design of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts aimed at effective iridium utilization is promising, it remains a challenging task. Herein, we present exfoliated Ti3C2Tx MXene as a highly conductive and corrosion-resistant support for acidic OER. We develop an alcohol reduction method to achieve uniform and dense loading of ultrafine Ir nanoparticles on the MXene surface. The IrO2/TiOx heterointerface is formed in situ on the Ir@Ti3C2Tx MXene surface, acting as a catalytically active phase for OER during electrocatalysis. The electron interactions at the IrO2/TiOx heterointerface create electron-rich Ir sites, which reduce the adsorption properties of oxygen intermediates and enhance intrinsic OER activity. Consequently, the prepared Ir@Ti3C2Tx exhibits a mass activity that is 7 times greater than that of the benchmark IrO2 catalyst for OER in acidic media. In addition, the /Ti3C2Tx MXene support can stabilize the Ir nanoparticles, so that the stability number of Ir@Ti3C2Tx MXene is about 2.4 times higher than that of the IrO2 catalyst.
IrO2/Nb–TiO2 Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Acidic Medium

Abstract:A corrosion-resistant Nb0.05Ti0.95O2 material with high surface area was prepared by a sol gel process. IrO2 nanoparticles (about 16-33 wt%) were successfully loaded on Nb0.05Ti0.95O2 powders as the electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic medium. The IrO2/Nb0.05Ti0.55O2 catalyst with the IrO2 loading of 26 wt% exhibits the best mass normalized cyclic voltammetry charge and mass normalized activity among all the IrO2/Nb0.05Ti0.53O2 catalysts because IrO2 nanoparticles were uniformly supported on the surface of Nb0.05Ti0.95O2 providing conductive channels to reduce the grain boundary resistance. Due to the anchoring effect of carrier on the catalyst, the stability of the supported IrO2 was significantly improved as compared to the unsupported one. The IrO2/Nb0.05Ti0.95O2 catalyst with 26 wt% IrO2 loading demonstrates the best effectiveness of the OER activity and cost. Copyright (C) 2014, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. IrO2/Ir Composite Nanoparticles (IrO2@Ir) Supported on TiNxOy Coated TiN: Efficient and Robust Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalyst for Water Electrolysis

Abstract:It is crucial but challenging to reduce the required noble‐metal loading without compromising the catalytic performance of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. This study presents a highly active OER catalyst composed of IrO2 with Ir rich surface (IrO2@Ir) nanoparticles supported over nano TiN coated with TiOxNy (IrO2@Ir/TiN). The present approach demonstrates superior OER catalysts with high activity through small, uniformly dispersed IrO2@Ir nanoparticles, along with high durability owing to robust catalyst support and strong catalyst‐support interaction. The synthesized IrO2@Ir/TiN with an Ir loading of 40 wt% exhibits a mass‐normalized OER activity of 637 AgIr‐1, which is 2.4 times that of the unsupported commercial benchmark IrO2 OER electrocatalyst. The fine nanoparticles and high activity enable significant (~60%) reduction in the Ir metal loading required to obtain equivalent OER performance. In addition, when evaluated through an accelerated stress test using potential cycling, the catalyst exhibits outstanding durability (79% retention) compared to that of the commercial equivalent (66% retention). The OER activity loss was attributed to the catalyst dissolution (30% loss) and the catalyst particle growth (70%), with no measurable loss due to the TiN support corrosion. The development of ultra‐fine IrO2@Ir nanoparticles and robust ceramic catalyst support significantly improved the Ir utilization and open a new perspective for supported OER catalyst.

Abstract:Developing efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is highly challenging for hydrogen production from water splitting, due to the high energy barrier for OO bond formation and the restriction of the scaling relation between the multiple reaction intermediates. In order to simultaneously address these concerns, an Ir/Ni(OH)2 heterostructure with abundant heterointerfaces is deliberately designed as an efficient electrocatalyst system, with Ir nanoparticles (NPs) homogeneously confined on the Ni(OH)2 nanosheets. The strong electronic interaction and chemical bonding across the interface between the Ir and Ni(OH)2 can effectively stabilize the metastable electrophilic Ir(V) species, which is vital to boost the formation of OO bonds. Meanwhile, the adsorption of the multiple intermediates is synergistically optimized at the heterointerface, which breaks the restrictive scaling relation and substantially accelerates the OER kinetics. In addition, the severe agglomeration of Ir species is greatly mitigated by the confinement effect, ensuring the structural integrity of the catalyst and the constant exposure of active sites. Owing to its well-defined multifunctional interfaces, the Ir/Ni(OH)2 heterostructure exhibits exceptional OER activity and durability in alkaline media. The present results highlight the significance of heterostructure interface engineering toward the rational design and development of advanced electrocatalysts for the OER and beyond.
Highly Active and Stable IrO2 and IrO2–Ta2O5 Catalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of nanosized iridium oxide-nanosheet-like based electrocatalysts synthesized by a modified Adams method is reported in this work. Cysteamine hydrochloride was introduced during the synthesis of IrO2 to induce the evo-lution of nanosheet-like morphology from spherical particles. The IrO2 crystallinity prepared by the modified Adams method was greatly affected by calcination temperature. When the temperature increases to 400 & DEG;C, the resulted iridium oxide transitions from pseudo -amorphous to crystal rutile type. Electrochemical evaluation results show that the IrO2 synthesized at 400 & DEG;C performs the best in terms of enhanced mass activity (1.104 A mg-1@1.6 V) and lower overpotential (315 mV@10 mA cm-2) as compared with the counterparts prepared at other temperatures. Ta2O5 with different molar ratios of Ir/Ta was incorporated to further improve the stability of iridium oxide and to reduce its usage as anode catalyst. Ultrathin IrO2-Ta2O5 nanosheets with optimized Ir/Ta = 7: 3 M ratio outperform the commercial IrO2 benchmark in terms of OER activity and stability. The overpotential of IrO2-Ta2O5(7: 3) is at 326 mV@10 mA cm-2, and its mass activity is as high as 0.9 A mg-1@1.6 V. Ir-Pd Nanoalloys with Enhanced Surface-Microstructure-sensitive Catalytic Activity for Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Acidic and Alkaline Media

Abstract:Ir-based electrocatalysts have been systematically studied for a variety of applications, among which the electrocatalysis for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the most prominent. The investigation on surface-microstructure- sensitive catalytic activity in different pH media is of great significance for developing efficient electrocatalysts and corresponding mechanism research. Herein, shape-tunable Ir-Pd alloy nanocrystals, including nano-hollow-spheres (NHSs), nanowires (NWs), and nanotetrahedrons (NTs), are synthesized via a facile one-pot solvothermal method. Electrochemical studies show that the OER activity of the Ir-Pd alloy nanocatalysts exhibits surface-microstructure-sensitive enhancement in acidic and alkaline media. Ir-Pd NWs and NTs show more than five times higher mass activity than commercial Ir/C catalyst at an overpotential of 0.25 V in acidic and alkaline media. Post-XPS analyses reveal that surface Ir(VI) oxide generated at surface defective sites of Ir-Pd nanocatalysts is a possible key intermediate for OER. In acidic medium, the specific activity of Ir-Pd nanocatalysts has a positive correlation with the surface roughness of NWs > NHSs > NTs. However, the strong dissociation of surface Ir(VI) species (IrO 4 2- ) at surface defective sites is a possible obstacle for the formation of Ir(VI) oxide, which reverses the activity sequence for OER in alkaline medium.

Abstract:The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is central to various energy conversion devices, but the investigation of the dynamic evolution of catalysts in different OER conditions remains quite limited, which is unfavorable for the understanding of the actual structure-activity relationship and catalyst optimization. Herein, we constructed monodispersed IrNix nanoparticles (NPs) with distinct composition-segregated features and captured their structural evolution in various OER environments. We decoded the interesting self-reconstruction of IrNix NPs during the OER, in which an Ir-skin framework is generated in an acidic electrolyte, while a Ni-rich surface layer is observed in an alkaline electrolyte owing to Ni migration. Benefiting from such self-reconstruction, considerable OER enhancements are achieved under both acidic and alkaline conditions. For comparison, IrNix nanoframes with Ir skins prepared by chemical etching show a similar structural evolution result in the acidic electrolyte, but a total different phenomenon in the alkaline electrolyte. By tracking the structural evolution of IrNix catalysts and correlating them with OER activity trajectories, the present work provides a significant understanding for designing efficient OER catalysts with controlled compositional distributions.
Self-Supported Hierarchical IrO2@NiO Nanoflake Arrays As an Efficient and Durable Catalyst for Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:Although traditional IrO2 nanoparticles loaded on a carbon support (IrO2@C) have been taken as a benchmark catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), their catalytic efficiency, operation stability, and IrO2 utilization are far from satisfactory due to the inferior powdery structure and inevitable corrosion of both IrO2 and C under the oxidizing potentials. Here, a rational design of a self-supported hierarchical nanocomposite, composed of IrO2@NiO nanoparticle-built porous nanoflake arrays vertically growing on nickel foam, is proposed, which is demonstrated as a versatile strategy to achieve improved OER activity, remarkable long-term stability, and significantly reduced loading of IrO2 (0.62 atom %). Impressively, the resultant catalyst drives a steady OER current density of 10 mA cm-2, requiring 278 mV overpotential in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte for 25 h and outmaneuvring commercial IrO2@C with much higher mass loading. Further electrochemical investigation and mechanism analysis disclose that the greatly improved electrocatalytic activity stems from the advantageous hierarchical structure and the synergistic effect between IrO2 and underlying potential-induced NiOOH, whereas the outstanding durability is attributed to the unique role of NiO in preventing IrO2 dissolution.
Iridium Single Atoms Coupling with Oxygen Vacancies Boosts Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Acid Media.

Abstract:Simultaneous realization of improved activity, enhanced stability, and reduced cost remains a desirable yet challenging goal in the search of electrocatalysis oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid. Herein, we report a novel strategy to prepare iridium single-atoms (Ir-SAs) on ultrathin NiCo2O4 porous nanosheets (Ir-NiCo2O4 NSs) by the co-electrodeposition method. The surface-exposed Ir-SAs couplings with oxygen vacancies (VO) exhibit boosting the catalysts OER activity and stability in acid media. They display superior OER performance with an ultralow overpotential of 240 mV at j = 10 mA cm-2 and long-term stability of 70 h in acid media. The TOFs of 1.13 and 6.70 s-1 at an overpotential of 300 and 370 mV also confirm their remarkable performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the prominent OER performance arises from the surface electronic exchange-and-transfer activities contributed by atomic Ir incorporation on the intrinsic VO existed NiCo2O4 surface. The atomic Ir sites substantially elevate the electronic activity of surface lower coordinated Co sites nearby VO, which facilitate the surface electronic exchange-and-transfer capabilities. With this trend, the preferred H2O activation and stabilized *O have been reached toward competitively lower overpotential. This is a generalized key for optimally boosting OER performance.
Tuning Electronic Correlations of Ultra-Small IrO2 Nanoparticles with La and Pt for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Performance and Long-Durable Stability in Acidic Media

Abstract:The rational design of electrocatalysts with active and long-durable characters applying in acidic proton exchange membrane electrolyzers is a spotlight for the sustainable energy storage. With the aim of tuning electronic structure of electrocatalysts and altering potential limiting step of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the ultra-small Pt, La co-doped IrO2 nanoparticles with average size of 2 nm highly dispersed on N-doped carbon (NC) was designed. Impressively, the representative Pt0.1La0.1-IrO2@NC exhibited the record performance toward OER in 0.5 M H2SO4 with a low overpotential of 205 mV (10 mA.cm(-2)), an extremely excellent stability of 135 h, and a fairly high TOF value of 5.71 s(-1) at eta = 280 mV. Theoretical calculations revealed that the co-doping of Pt, La into the lattice of IrO2 could rationally tune d band centers and lower the energy barrier for the potential-determining step (from *O to *OOH) toward OER.
Nanoporous Iridium-Based Alloy Nanowires as Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts Toward Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Acidic proton exchange membrane water electrolysis is a prospective energy conversion technology for future hydrogen production. However, its wide application is limited by the excessive dependence of oxygen evolution reaction on precious metals at anode. To address this issue, herein, we report a class of IrM (M = Ni, Co, Fe) catalysts with diluted Ir content fabricated via a eutectic-directed self-templating strategy. Manipulated by the eutectic reaction and dealloying inheritance effect, the IrM catalysts show a unique network structure composed of intertwining nanoporous nanowires. The catalytic activities of IrM nanowires show a transition-metal-dependent feature, among which IrNi delivers the best activity with an exceptionally low overpotential to drive 10 mA cm-2 (283 mV) and a high mass activity at 1.53 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (0.732 A mg-1). Such performance represents a major leap forward compared to that of commercial IrO2 and most of state-of-the-art Ir-based acidic catalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction. First-principles calculations indicate that the 3d transition-metal-dependent catalytic activity of IrM electrocatalysts is related to ligand effect, wherein the negative shift of Ir d-band center after alloying can effectively weaken the adsorption of reaction intermediates.

Abstract:Achieving high activity and long-term stability is a major challenge in the design of catalysts. In particular, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media, which plays a key role in proton exchange membrane electrolyzers for fast hydrogen fuel generation, seriously suffers from rapid degradation of catalysts as a result of the harsh acidic and oxidative conditions. Here, we report a rational design strategy for the fabrication of a heterostructured OER electrocatalyst (Ru@IrOx) that has unique physicochemical properties and in which a strong charge redistribution exists between a highly strained ruthenium core and a partially oxidized iridium shell across the metal-metal oxide heterojunction. The increased valence of the iridium shell and the decreased valence of the ruthenium core activate a synergistic electronic and structural interaction, which results in the enhanced activity and stability of the catalyst compared with the majority of the state-of-the-art ruthenium- and iridium-based materials.

Abstract:In this paper, we report synthesis of novel nanoparticle catalyst of iridium oxide supported on conjugated polymer along with evaluation of activity and durability for oxygen evolution reaction. The IrO2/poly(BIAN-thiophene)/TNT catalyst was prepared from iridium complex and poly(BIAN-thiophene)/TNT by hydrothermal method. The synthesized IrO2/poly(BIAN-thiophene)/TNT catalysts was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transfer-infrared spectroscopy, ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. The average particle size of the IrO2 particles on poly(BIAN-thiophene)/TNT was 2.5 nm. The XPS measurement revealed that Ir complex was completely converted to iridium oxide through hydrothermal treatment. The IrO2/poly(BIAN-thiophene)/TNT catalyst showed sufficient performance for OER activity and durability in acidic condition. Our results indicate that IrO2/poly(BIAN-thiophene)/TNT is one of the prospective candidate catalysts for water splitting.

Structural and Electronic Engineering of Ir-Doped Ni-(Oxy)hydroxide Nanosheets for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Activity

Abstract:Discovering highly active and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical to the commercial development of many next-generation energy conversion and storage devices, with Fe-doped nickel (oxy)hydroxide representing one of the most promising OER catalysts developed to date. However, the active sites and mechanism of OER on Fe-doped nickel (oxy)hydroxide catalysts remain unclear. To gain deeper insights into the role of metal dopants in enhancing OER activity, we explored here the role of Ir-doping in the OER performance of nickel (oxy)hydroxide catalysts, placing particular emphasis on the nature of the active site. Density functional theory calculations with Hubbard U correction revealed that Ir-doping of a β-NiOOH(001) surface enhanced the electric conductivity while also activating an oxygen site involving three Ni atoms (Ni3 site) to realize a remarkably low OER overpotential of only η = 0.46 V, much lower than the overpotential on the oxygen site involving Ir + two Ni atoms (IrNi2 site, η = 0.77 V) or the oxygen site involving three Ni atoms in pristine β-NiOOH (η = 0.66 V). Guided by the computational results, ultrathin Ir-doped Ni(OH)2 nanosheets were then fabricated through a combination of hydrothermal assembly and liquid exfoliation, with the nanosheets transforming to Ir-doped NiOOH during OER and offering superior activity relative to pristine Ni(OH)2 nanosheets or a commercial IrO2 catalyst, thereby validating the theoretical predictions. The computational and experimental results thus conclusively demonstrate that Ir-doping and nanosheet engineering are synergistic strategies for tuning the electronic and structural properties of nickel (oxy)hydroxides for improved oxygen evolution electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Abstract Designing efficient and robust oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is of great importance for various electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications. Herein, we developed IrP 2 nanocrystals uniformly anchored in P,N-codoped carbon nanosheets (IrP 2 @PNC-NS) as highly active OER electrocatalysts. The ultrathin PNC-NS reconstructs an agaric-like porous structure, which can inhibit the agglomeration of the IrP 2 nanocrystals effectively. Moreover, the in-situ phosphatization leads to the formation of a strong electron interaction between PNC-NS and IrP 2 nanocrystals, endowing the heterostructure materials with satisfying synergistic effects. Benefiting from the collaborative advantages of ideal configuration structure and favorable synergistic effects, IrP 2 @PNC-NS exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 221 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and a small Tafel slope of 37.5 mV dec −1 . DFT calculations reveal that the synergistic effects derived from the IrP 2 /PNC interfaces, which can effectively tune the activation barriers towards facilitating the oxygen evolution process. This work provides new insight into the design of heterostructure materials for advanced OER electrocatalysts.

It uses carbon soot as a nanostructure template, which is sequentially coated with a conductive niobium-doped titanium oxide (NTO) layer and an ultrathin, highly pure IrO2 catalyst layer by atomic layer deposition (ALD). The NTO acts as an oxidation-stable conductor between the metal current distributor and the catalyst. The highly controlled film growth by ALD enables the fabrication of electrodes with a very low noble metal loading. Nonetheless, these electrodes exhibit very high catalytic activity and good stability under cyclic and constant load conditions. At an IrO2 content of less than 10 percent by mass of the oxide material and an area-based Ir content of 153 μg cm-2, the nanostructured NTO/IrO2 electrode achieves an oxygen evolution current density of 1 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of ∼250 mV, which is significantly lower than the reported values for particulate NTO/IrO2 catalysts.

Abstract:<p>To achieve practical production of fuel from water, it is essential to develop efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We report here that doping NiCo–OOH nanosheets with 8% Ir leads to a low overpotential of only 260 mV for 50 mA/cm<sup>2</sup>, far better than previous OER catalysts. We synthesized this catalyst using a novel photochemical deposition method that leads to a uniform distribution of dopant, large catalytic active area, high interfacial charge transfer efficiency, good adhesion between catalyst and matrix, and long lifetime. Moreover, these nanosheets show significant stable performance for 70 h in alkaline media. Our density functional theory calculations, show that Ir and Co both play essential bifunctional roles in stabilizing the key O radical intermediate on Ir and promoting the O–O bond coupling on Co, which is optimum for the 8% Ir.</p>

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) exhibits the superior benefits including high gas purity, high power density and wide variable loading but is still limited by the prohibitive cost and dearth of iridium (Ir)-based anode catalysts. Herein, we report a low-loading Ir-based catalyst with ultrasmall iridium nanoparticles (1.46 ± 0.01 nm) supported on oxygen-vacancy-rich tungsten oxide nanofibers (WO 3-x ) through electrospinning combined with surfactant-free microwave-assisted polyol reduction method for active acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). According to structural analysis and theoretical calculation, the charge transfer from W to Ir is induced by the strong electronic interaction at the Ir and WO 3-x interface, thereby raising the electron density surrounding the Ir sites and favoring to boost OER activity. The resultant 3-x exhibits an excellent overpotential of ca. 276 mA cm −2 and remarkable durability. This study offers a new path for promoting the activity and durability of electrocatalysts while minimizing the mass loading of Ir towards OER.

Abstract:The state-of-the-art iridium-based catalyst, which is the trade-off between activity and durability during acidic OER, needs to be distributed on low-cost effective support materials for the economical utilization of electrolyzers. 1 Normally, dopant is introduced into the oxide lattice structure in order to improve the conductivity of the support, which in turn can diminish the Iridium loading content. In this talk, niobium doped titanium dioxide (NbTiO), which is proved to have promising durability in acidic OER conditions, is applied for supported Ir-based catalyst. Based on the powder compression method for conductivity measurement, 2 the resistivity of synthesized Nb-doped TiO 2 , with niobium content of 10 at. % (NbTiO10), is about tens times lower than the resistivity of anatase TiO 2 (a.TiO 2 ). Which, in turn brings to the 40 wt. % Ir/NbTiO10 the resistivity of millions times lower than 40 wt.% Ir/a.TiO 2 and hundreds times lower than 50 wt.% Ir/a.TiO 2 . Moreover, by introducing an organic framework to the synthesis, support's surface area can be enlarged and its macroporous morphology can be modified. Various ex-situ methods, e.g. HR-STEM, XRD, and RDE, are used to investigate the influence of the distribution and oxidation state of the Ir-active phase on doped TiO 2 support onto the performance of catalysts, before and after the acceleration stress test (AST). And in-situ methods, including ICP-MS coupling scanning flow cell and XAS, are also applied, in order to reveal the alternating of every single component in the catalytic system during OER and after the AST. The catalyst was then tested in electrolyzer to compare its performance with the commercial Elyst Umicore Catalyst. Abstract:Abstract Although researches on non-noble metal electrocatalysts have been made some progress recently, their performance in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer is still incomparable to that of noble-metal-based catalysts. Therefore, it is a more practical way to improve the utilization of precious metals in electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the acidic medium. Herein, nanostructured IrCo@IrCoO x core–shell electrocatalysts composed of IrCo alloy core and IrCoO x shell were synthesized through a simple colloidally synthesis and calcination method. As expected, the hybrid IrCo-200 NPs with petal-like morphology show the best OER activities in acidic electrolytes. They deliver lower overpotential and better electrocatalytic kinetics than pristine IrCo alloy and commercial Ir/C, reaching a low overpotential ( j = 10 mA cm −2 ) of 259 mV (versus RHE) and a Tafel slope of 59 mV dec −1 . The IrCo-200 NPs displayed robust durability with life time of about 55 h in acidic solution under a large current density of 50 mA cm −2 . The enhanced electrocatalytic activity may be associated with the unique metal/amorphous metal oxide core–shell heterostructure, allowing the improved charge transferability. Moreover, the *OH-rich amorphous shell functions as the active site for OER and prevents the further dissolution of the metallic core and thus ensures high stability.
