Abstract:SmMn2O5 has been reported as a promising substitute for noble metals to achieve highly efficient NO oxidation. In this work, the composites of carbon nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide) and SmMn2O5 nanocrystals are successfully synthesized through a hydrothermal method, and their catalytic activities for NO oxidation are investigated as well. The performance evaluation indicates that the introduction of carbon nanotube and graphene oxide in the SmMn2O5 nanocrystal composites improve the activity for NO oxidation. Carbon nanotubes contribute to the improvement of the catalytic activity in the low-temperature region, while graphene oxide helps to increase activity in the high-temperature region. By the analysis of differential scanning calorimetry, the performance improvement of the NO oxidation is found to be dependent on the heat release of carbon nanomaterials in the different temperature regions. These results could provide a new way to improve the NO oxidation performance of SmMn2O5 nanocrystals.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of NO to NO2 stands as a pivotal step governing NO x purification technology, with its effectiveness relying heavily on the utilization of high-performance catalysts. Herein, we harness a facile ligand-assisted self-assembly strategy to fabricate mesoporous Co3O4 with abundant oxygen vacancies (M-Co3O4), aiming at improving the activity of NO oxidation. For comparison, Co3O4 nanoflakes (F-Co3O4) and bulk Co3O4 (B-Co3O4) were synthesized from a hydrothermal method and direct calcination of cobalt nitrate, respectively. Activity results reveal that M-Co3O4 can oxidize 88% of NO at 275 degrees C under a GHSV of 180,000 h(-1), surpassing both F-Co3O4 (70% at 325 degrees C) and B-Co3O4 (66% at 325 degrees C). Extensive characterizations indicate that the exceptional activities of M-Co3O4 are predominantly attributed to the synergistic effects of its surface Co2+ species, weak Co-O bond strength, and high mobility of surface lattice oxygen. This work lays the groundwork for the advancement of high-performance Co3O4-based catalysts for atmospheric contaminants remediation.
Facile preparation of hollow MnOx-CeO2 composites with low Ce content and their catalytic performance in NO oxidation

Abstract:The Mn-Ce mixed oxides are frequently used for catalytic oxidation of NO. However, to achieve better performance, a large amount of Ce element is usually engaged in the preparation, in spite of its low abundance and high cost. Herein, a facile sovothermal method was presented to prepare hollow MnOx-CeO2 composites. The structural and physiochemical properties of the products were carefully investigated and their catalytic performance was evaluated. The most active sample possesses a bulk Mn/(Mn + Ce) ratio of 74.5 %, which shows a maximum NO conversion of 90.6 % at 270 °C (GHSV = 120,000 h−1). It is believed that the superior catalytic activity is largely due to the enrichment of Ce element and the high content of Mn4+ species on the surface, while the porous structure is also beneficial.

Abstract:Activated carbon nanofibers (ACNFs) were firstly fabricated by stabilizing, carbonizing and activating electrospun-derived polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers. Then the graphite carbon nanofibers (GPNF-1900, GPNF-2400) were achieved by graphitization at 1900°C and 2400°C. The GPNFs and ACNFs were characterized by SEM, FTIR, Raman and nitrogen adsorption at 77K. The adsorption and oxidation of NO at room temperature (30°C) were investigated. The results showed that GPNF with porous graphitic structure can improve dramatically the catalytic oxidation of NO at room temperature. The steady conversion ratio of NO to NO2 over the ACNFs, GPNF-1900 and GPNF-2400 was 11%, 38%, 45%, respectively, which revealed that GPNFs would be promising catalysts in catalytic oxidation of NO at room temperature.

Abstract:Porous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs) with controllable pore structures for removing low-concentrations of NO at room temperature were prepared from electrospun polyacrylonitrile nanofibers by oxidative stabilization, carbonization and steam activation. The PCNFs had high surface areas and abundant micropores, which were favorable for the adsorption and catalytic oxidation of NO at ambient temperature. The diameter of the fibers and their pore structure were tailored by adjusting the concentrations of polyacrylonitrile, and the spinning and activation parameters. Their performance in the removal of low-concentration NO was strongly dependent on their pore structure and fiber diameter. The highest NO removal ratio for PCNFs activated at 900 °C, which had an average diameter of 175 nm, reached 29.7% when the inlet NO concentration was 20 ppm.

Abstract:A series of Mn-Fe X (X= Ce, W, Cu, Co) mixed oxides doped on cordierite monoliths as structured catalysts based monolithic for NO oxidation has been investigated. The results showed that Mn Fe-Ce/Al2O3/CC sample exhibited the best activity, for which a maximal NO conversion (72%) could be attained at 250 degrees C with the GHSV of 5971 h 1. The effects of the preparation parameters including the catalyst preparation methods and the coating material on the catalytic performance for NO catalytic oxidation was also investigated. The XRD and SEM-EDS also indicated the coating material had a significant influence on specific surface area, surface morphology, which resulted in differences in the catalytic activity of NO catalytic oxidation. The NO+ O2-TPD results indicated that different general procedures to prepare Mn Fe-Ce based monolithic catalysts had a great influence on the catalytic oxidation activity of NO and Mn Fe-Ce/Al2O3/CC catalyst was beneficial to NO adsorption and NO2 desorption, which increased activity of catalytic oxidation of NO. The physisorption of N2 revealed that the catalyst synthesized with Al2O3 presented a higher BET specific surface area, more abundant pore structure, and better dispersion of catalysts' active components which were favorable for catalytic oxidation reaction of NO.

Abstract:A series of CeO2-MnOx-Al2O3 mixed oxide catalysts (Ce:Mn:Al mole ratio = 6:4:x, x = 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2) were prepared by a simple one-step inverse co-precipitation method to investigate the influence of the incorporation of Al3+ into CeO2-MnOx mixed oxides. CeO2-MnOx, CeO2-Al2O3, and MnOx-Al2O3 mixed oxides, and CeO2 were prepared by the same method for comparison. The samples were characterized by XRD, Raman, N2 physisorption, H2-TPR, XPS, and in situ DRIFTS. The catalytic reduction of NO by CO was chosen as a model reaction to evaluate the catalytic performance. The incorporation of a small amount of Al3+ into CeO2-MnOx mixed oxides resulted in a decrease of crystallite size, with the increase of the BET specific surface area and pore volume, as well as the increase of Ce3+ and Mn4+. The former benefits good contact between catalyst and reactants, and the latter promotes the adsorption of CO and the desorption, conversion and dissociation of adsorbed NO. All these enhanced the catalytic performance for the NO+CO model reaction. A reaction mechanism was proposed to explain the excellent catalytic performance of CeO2-MnOx-Al2O3 catalysts for NO reduction by CO.

Abstract:The optimization of the gas diffusion path and surface coordination environment through morphology control can improve the intrinsic activity of the catalyst in NO oxidation reactions. Microporous nanosheets, nanowires, and spheres of carbon were constructed using resorcinol and formaldehyde as carbon sources, melamine as nitrogen source, and graphene oxide or carbon nanowires as structure‐directing agents to reveal the effects of morphology and nitrogen‐doping on NO oxidation activity at room temperature. With the increase of coating thickness, the ultramicroporous structure becomes pronounced and the nitrogen content increases, which contribute to the improvement of steady‐state NO conversion. The 2D microporous nanosheets (TDC‐200) with sheet structure shows prominent diffusion and adsorption capability than 1D nanowires and sphere, which shortens the gas diffusion path and enhances the efficient utilization of ultramicropores, thereby presenting the highest NO oxidation activity of 78.4% at room temperature. The results of DFT calculations further demonstrate that doping of nitrogen atoms could significantly reduce the (2NO + O2)ads energy barrier and accelerate the reaction. This study provides a deeper understanding of the NO oxidation on non‐metallic catalyst.

Abstract:Herein, we synthesized the well-defined catalysts of Mn-decorated single-crystal CeO2 nanorod (Mn/CeO2) with dominantly exposed {1 1 0} facets by incipient wetness impregnation method. Surface-modified Mn atoms can diffuse into the crystal lattice of CeO2-{1 1 0} facet to form Mn-O-Ce bond chains. The heteroatomic interfacial oxygen atoms in Mn-O-Ce bond chains as active oxygen species have a high-efficient performance, and resulting oxygen vacancy (Ov) sites can promote the adsorption and activation properties for O2. Mn/CeO2-10 catalyst exhibits superior catalytic activities and high stability. The related characterizations and DFT calculations results reveal that the Mn2+-Ov-Ce3+ active sites can decrease activation energy of O2 and desorption energy of NO2 in processes of NO oxidation to NO2, which is the crucial steps of NO2-assisted mechanism for soot oxidation. This work provides a new inspiration for rational modification of the near-surface atomic structure to obtain efficient catalysts for removal of soot or other pollutions.

Abstract:The nanocomposites of highly-dispersed MnOx and CeOx on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a uniform structure are obtained via a novel in situ deposition strategy through a pyridine-thermal method and used for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 at low temperature. The influence of calcination temperature and the promotion effect of CeOx on the structural features of the MnOx-CeOx/CNTs are investigated. It is found that the appropriate calcination temperature could provide perfect crystallization and good dispersion of MnOx and CeOx components. The suitable CeOx loadings in the MnOx-CeOx/CNTs will lead to enhanced reducing ability, suggesting stronger interaction between CeOx, MnOx and CNTs. Compared with the MnOx-CeOx/CNTs prepared by an impregnation method, the MnOx-CeOx/CNTs obtained from the pyridine-thermal route presents better NH3-SCR activity within the working temperature range, excellent SO2 resistance as well as favourable stability. The MnOx-CeOx/CNT nanocomposites prepared by the pyridine-thermal route are good candidate catalysts for the NH3-SCR of NO.
Low-temperature catalytic oxidation of NO over Mn-Ce-Ox catalyst

Abstract:A series of manganese-cerium oxide catalysts were prepared by different methods and used for low-temperature catalytic oxidation of NO in the presence of excess O2. Their surface properties were evaluated by means of BET and were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The activity test of Mn-Ce-Ox catalysts showed that addition of Ce enhanced the activities of NO oxidation. The most active catalysts with a molar Ce/(Mn+Ce) ratio of 0.3 were prepared by co-precipitation method. The results showed that NO conversion reached 60% at 150 °C with a high space velocity of 50902 h−1. The effect of doping different rare earth oxides was also investigated and the addition of small amount of Ce not only increased the surface area of MnOx but also enhanced the dispersion of Mn species in the catalyst shown by BET, SEM and XRD.

Abstract:Mn–Ce–OX catalysts loaded on TiO2-carbonaceous materials were prepared by sol–gel method. Selective catalytic reduction of NOX was conducted in a fixed-bed flow-reactor over catalysts coated on aluminum plates. A de-NOX efficiency of more than 90% was obtained over the Mn–Ce–OX/TiO2-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) catalyst between 75°C and 225°C under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of ~36,000h−1. This activity improvement is attributed to the increase of the BET surface area, and the occurrence of reaction between adsorbed NOX and NH3. Moreover, the de-NOX efficiency was increased to 99.6% by adding 250ppm SO2 between 100°C and 250°C.
Structure–Activity Relationship Study of Mn/Fe Ratio Effects on Mn−Fe−Ce−Ox/γ-Al2O3 Nanocatalyst for NO Oxidation and Fast SCR Reaction

Abstract:A series of Mn−Fe−Ce−Ox/γ-Al2O3 nanocatalysts were synthesized with different Mn/Fe ratios for the catalytic oxidation of NO into NO2 and the catalytic elimination of NOx via fast selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction. The effects of Mn/Fe ratio on the physicochemical properties of the samples were analyzed by means of various techniques including N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and NO-TPD, meanwhile, their catalytic performance was also evaluated and compared. Multiple characterizations revealed that the catalytic performance was highly dependent on the phase composition. The Mn15Fe15−Ce/Al sample with the Mn/Fe molar ratio of 1.0 presented the optimal structure characteristic among all tested samples, with the largest surface area, increased active components distributions, the reduced crystallinity and diminished particle sizes. In the meantime, the ratios of Mn4+/Mnn+, Fe2+/Fen+ and Ce3+/Cen+ in Mn15Fe15−Ce/Al samples were improved, which could enhance the redox capacity and increase the quantity of chemisorbed oxygen and oxygen vacancy, thus facilitating NO oxidation into NO2 and eventually promoting the fast SCR reaction. In accord with the structure results, the Mn15Fe15−Ce/Al sample exhibited the highest NO oxidation rate of 64.2% at 350 °C and the broadest temperature window of 75–350 °C with the NOx conversion >90%. Based on the structure–activity relationship discussion, the catalytic mechanism over the Mn−Fe−Ce ternary components supported by γ-Al2O3 were proposed. Overall, it was believed that the optimization of Mn/Fe ratio in Mn−Fe−Ce/Al nanocatalyst was an extremely effective method to improve the structure–activity relationships for NO pre-oxidation and the fast SCR reaction.

Abstract:A series of hollow MnOx-CeO2 mixed oxide catalysts were prepared by employing carbon as hard templates. The activity tests reveal that the catalytic performance of MnOx-CeO2(CS) samples are more active than that of MnOx-CeO2(AC) sample, indicating carbon sphere (CS) as a more effective carbon template. Among these samples, MnOx-CeO2(CS1) sample exhibits the best activity, for which a maximal NO conversion (∼82%) could be attained at 220°C when GHSV=120,000h−1. In addition, the NO conversion could be further improved with lower NO initial concentration or higher O2 content. Under the simulated flue gas condition, the activity of MnOx-CeO2(CS1) sample is barely affected by the presence of CO2, but the influence of H2O and SO2 couldn’t be neglected. The characterization result proves that the core-shell hollow structure has been successfully synthesized over MnOx-CeO2 binary oxides. For the hollow MnOx-CeO2 sample, the mesopore structures are formed and the MnOx oxides are highly dispersed on CeO2 support. Among these samples, MnOx-CeO2(CS1) sample possesses the largest SBET and Vtotal values. The result of H2-TPR and oxygen pulse measurement indicates that MnOx-CeO2(CS) samples, especially MnOx-CeO2(CS1) exhibits the best redox property. Moreover, more amount of high valence Mn as redox active sites and more oxygen vacancies exist in MnOx-CeO2(CS1) proved by XPS technique. Overall, these properties may contribute to the excellent activity.
Synthesis of Mn-Fe/γ-Al2O3 and Its Performance in Catalytic Oxidation of NO

Abstract:γ-aluminium oxide doped with Mn-and Fe-were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation.The effects of the metal loading,molar ratios of Mn and Fe and different base neutralization on NO conversion were investigated in a tubular reactor.The results show that Mn-Fe/γ-Al2O3 with 20% loading,metal molar ratio of 1 and tetramethy-lammonium hydroxide for acid-base adjusting gets the highest activity of 66% when the temperature is 300 ℃,inlet concentration of NO is 300 mmol/L,concentration of O2 is 5% and GHSV is 12 000 h-1.The phase structure and surface morphology of the mixed oxides were investigated by XRD and SEM,and the result shows that the crystal phase of samples is gradually separated,diffraction peaks of Fe2O3 and MnO2 are increasingly acute as the loading increases,in other words,active components are permeating into the carrier pores.In addition,samples neutralized by organic base have formed high surface dispersity and amorphous state crystal,which increases the NO conversion.

Abstract:The MnOx/Al2O3 catalysts with different Ce content doping were prepared by an ultrasonic impregnation method, and the catalytic activity for NO oxidation removal was tested in a fixed-bed quartz tube furnace. Simultaneously, the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), full-automatic physical-chemical adsorption instrument, and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) to analyze the effect of Ce addition on the adsorption capacity and catalytic activity. Experimental results validated that the activity of the MnOx/Al2O3 catalyst was greatly promoted with Ce addition. According to the characterization results, it could be concluded that Ce doping led to significant changes in the crystalline phase on the catalyst surface, which increased the relative content of surface lattice oxygen and promoted the catalytic oxidation of NO. By observing the physical properties of the surface and analyzing the surface elements of the catalyst, it could be inferred that a manganese-cerium solid solution was formed on the surface of Mn0.4Ce0.05/Al. Moreover, Ce addition increased the catalyst pore size, which enhanced the adsorption and contact of NO and O2 with the active sites on the catalyst surface, and reduced the resistance of the reactants during internal diffusion. All these variations assigned to Mn0.4Ce0.05/Al were favorable for the catalytic oxidation of NO.
Enhanced Catalytic Properties of Cu-based Composites for NOx Reduction with Coexistence and Intergrowth Effect

Abstract:Cu-based composites were prepared by a facile preparation method and were employed as reactive catalysts for the elimination of NOx. The characterizations of XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), BET (Brunauer-Emmet-Teller), LRS (Laser Raman Spectra), H-2-TPR (H-2-Temperature-Program-Reduction), TGA-DSC (Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer-Differential Scanning Calorimetry), ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy), HRTEM (High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope), O-2-TPD (O-2-TemperatureProgram-Desorption) and in situ FT-IR (in situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) show the formation of CuAl2O4 spinel during the calcination process and the coexistence and intergrowth effect among three-phases CuO-CuAl2O4-CeO2, promoting the increase of the amount of surface active sites. These results further present that the composite CCA800 exhibits the best catalytic performance in the elimination of NOx, completely converting NO to N-2 at only 220 degrees C, which exhibits more excellent catalytic properties than the same type of Cu/Ce/ Al catalysts applied in the field of the elimination of NOx. The coexistence and intergrowth effect among three-phases CuO-CuAl2O4-CeO2 greatly promotes the catalytic performance in the elimination of NOx.
NH3-activated Carbon Nanofibers for Low-Concentration NO Removal at Room Temperature

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (NCNFs) were prepared by activating electrospun carbon nanofibers using NH3 as activating agent at different temperatures. NCNFs with various contents of nitrogen were used as adsorbents and catalysts for low-concentration NO removal at room temperature. The NO removal efficiency over NCNFs was far above that over porous carbon nanofibers obtained by steam-activation, suggesting that NCNFs are efficient catalysts for low-concentration NO removal at room temperature. A maximum of 64.5% removal efficiency for NO was acquired at NO initial concentration of 20ppm and 21vol.% of O2 at room temperature.
Electrospun YMn2O5 Nanofibers: A Highly Catalytic Activity for NO Oxidation

Abstract:Nanofiber catalysts are potentially promising to be equipped in the lean-burned vehicle exhaust emission system considering its facile synthesis, low-cost, long durability in contrast to the traditionally complicated powder based catalyst. Here, via electrospinning method, we synthesized YMn2O5 nanofibers (average diameter (similar to)93 nm) including nanowire stacked with particles, and hollow tubes with or without inside nanowires. The morphologies remained even after hydrothermal aging at 800 degrees C for 10 h with 10% H2O stream. X-ray photoelectron spectrum revealed Mn4+/Mn3+ ratio 0.589 on the surface of YMn2O5 catalyst (YMO), indicating the existence of oxygen vacancies. The highest conversion of electrospun mullite fibers at 310 degrees C is (similar to)18% higher than powder based YMO at 352 degrees C in the presence of 5% H2O at WHSV = 240,000 ml g(-1) h(-1). The extracted activation energy from NO-to-NO2 conversion curves of YMO nanofiber (61.68 kJ/mol) is slightly lower than that of powder-based mullite (91.45 kJ/mol), consistent with calculated 68.16 kJ/mol on the fiber YMO surface (121) with a rate-limiting step of the NO2 desorption. The catalytic activity can be attributed to the unit occupy of the e(g) (d(z)(2) and d(x-y)(2 2)) orbitals of Mn-dimer atoms around fermi level based on the combination of the theoretical calculations and DRIFTS spectra analysis. Importantly, after the hash hydrothermal-aging, the highest NO oxidation conversion of powder-based mullite is less than 50%, while the fiber maintains a conversion of 62%. Moreover, the fresh YMO fiber maintained superior oxidation stability for 12 h at its maximum conversion of 66%. This work provides the possibility for mullite oxide fibers to replace powder-based precious metal catalyst coating on monolith converter.
