Abstract:Eccentric loading experiment of 13 steel tube-reinforced concrete columns and a reinforced concrete column is implemented. The whole process from the start load on the steel tube-reinforced concrete column until damage has been researched. Change of ultimate bearing capacity with eccentricity, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, position coefficient has been studied, and deflection curve and load-vertical displacement curve under eccentric compressive load were obtained. Failure characteristics of steel tube-reinforced concrete were divided into two different type, small eccentric damage and big eccentric damage. With the same conditions, when steel tube ratio of steel tube-reinforced concrete was 2%, its ultimate bearing capacity was nearly double of reinforced concrete columns.

Abstract:As a fundamental mechanical problem in steel and concrete composite structures,the axial compressive behavior of concrete filled steel tube stub columns has been widely concerned by researchers worldwide.Focusing on the interaction between the steel tube and the core concrete,this paper presented a nonlinear analytical procedure using the octahedral stress-strain relationship,the corresponding failure criterion and flow rule proposed by Xiao(1989) as well as the simplified hardening model of the steel tube where the stress-strain relationship was represented by four segmental linear lines.The procedure presented in this paper followed fundamental principles of elasto-plastic mechanics to reflect main interactions between the steel tube and concrete infill.A total of sixteen interaction conditions between the concrete and steel tube were taken into consideration.The incremental nonlinear analysis was realized by coding a computer program using Visual Basic.The reasonable accuracy and efficiency of the analytical procedure was validated by comparing with existing testing results from literature.

Abstract:A split Hopkinson pressure bar equipment was used to perform high strain rate compressive tests on concrete filled steel tubes (CFT) along with benchmark plain concrete cylinders for comparison. This paper reports the results of dynamic compressive strength, ultimate strain, residual strength and the secant stiffness. The dynamic increase factor (DIF) of CFT strength upon the increase of strain rate was obtained based on the logarithm linear fitting of the test results. The DIF of the CFT specimens can be relatively well estimated with conservatism using the simple superposition of dynamic uniaxial strength of concrete and steel. The confinement stress and the confinement coefficient under high strain rate loading are also discussed based on assumptions similar to those used for the static loading cases.

Abstract:Based on the experiments of concrete-filled square steel tubular column connections with interior or exterior diaphragms under cyclic loading,3-D nonlinear finite element models were used to analyze the mechanical properties of these two types of connections using ANSYS.Based on appropriate material stress-strain relations and failure criteria,finite element analyses were conducted under monotonic loading and cyclic loading.The load-deflection curves and shear force-deformation curves by finite element analyses show good agreement with those of the experiments.Parametric analyses were conducted on the connections with exterior diaphragms to investigate the influences of compression ratio,width to thickness ratio,strength of the concrete in the square steel tube and concrete slab height.It is found that compression ratio and width to thickness ratio are more important to the connections.

Abstract:This paper presents test results for 8 high strength concrete-filled square steel tubes subjected to eccentric compression. The column section size was 150 x 150 mm. The primary parameters were slenderness ratios, varying from 25.4 to 71.6, steel ratios, between 8.2% and 14.4%, eccentric distance, 20 mm and 40 mm. The average strength of the concrete cubes at the time of the columns testing was 94.1 N/mm(2). At the same time, a numerical analysis procedure was proposed. The model of the stress-strain of the steel and the core concrete, which were separated from the experiments on axially compressive short columns, were used in the procedure, and two-way stress in the steel plate was considered. The numerical analysis results agreed well with the experimental results. Furthermore, the influence of the factors, such as slenderness ratio, eccentric ratio, steel ratio, concrete strength and steel strength on the eccentrically loaded columns were discussed.

Abstract:This paper presents research on the reinforced concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) members subjected to eccentric tension, where the embedded components are the reinforcing bars or steel angles. A total of 8 full-scale specimens were designed and tested with main parameters of specimen types and load eccentricities. In particular, there was no direct connection between the outer tube and embedded components. Therefore the tensile load was transferred from the outer steel tube to the reinforcing bars or angles through the filled concrete. The failure mode, the load versus deformation relationships and the strain responses were recorded and analysed. The simplified design equations were also proposed for the elastic tensile stiffness and tension versus moment interaction relationships of reinforced CFSTs under eccentric tension.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation involving 12 normal strength concrete-filled steel tubes (CFT) and 24 high-strength concrete-filled steel tubes (HSCFT). Experimental phenomena during the tests and failure modes were depicted in details, and the failure mechanism was analyzed. Influence of the parameters including yielding strength of steel, compressive strength of concrete, steel ratio and confining factor on the mechanic properties of axially loaded stocky columns was discussed. Some suggestions were provided for engineering practice by comparing the design methods of the bearing capacities of concrete-filled steel tubes in the different design codes.
Experimental research on the behavior of concrete-filled SHS steel tubes under different loading conditions

Abstract:A total of six concrete-filled square hollow section (SHS) steel tubes were tested. The main research is to study the behavior of specimens under different loading conditions, which include steel tube and core concrete simultaneously loaded, only core concrete loaded, only core concrete loaded together with grease between steel tube and core concrete. In the experiment, the load-strain relationship curve and the load-longitudinal deformation action curve were obtained and analyzed. The result showed that the bearing capacity and elastic rigidity of the specimen with core concrete loaded were lower than those of the specimen whose core concrete and steel tube were loaded simultaneously, but the ductility of the former is better than that of the later. The bearing capacity of specimen under different loading conditions is over the summation of the load bearing capacity of steel tube and core concrete. The cohesion between steel tube and core concrete had no evident influence on the bearing capacity of the specimen loaded on the core concrete.

Abstract:Experimental investigation of concrete-filled steel tubular columns with reinforcing lattice angle was conducted in this study. Eight column specimens were divided into four groups by length from 500 mm to 3 500 mm. And each group had two columns specimens with and without lattice angle. The whole loading process and failure mode were observed. The influence of test parameters including lattice angle and slenderness ratio on the ultimate strengths of specimens were investigated. Meanwhile, a series of important curves of load-displacement, load-axial strain and load-hoop strain were also plotted. It is shown that the loading process of specimens consists of elastic stage, yield stage and failure stage. The failure modes are mainly strength failure and failure of elasto-plastic instability. The ultimate strengths of specimens with reinforcing lattice angle are enhanced and the slenderness has great influence on ultimate strengths and failure modes of specimens. In addition, the test strengths were compared with the design strengths calculated using the AISC Specification and Eurocode 4 for the design of composite structural members. It is shown that the design strengths are generally conservative. A new design method was also proposed for the concrete-filled steel tubular columns with reinforcing lattice angle. It is shown that the design predictions from the proposed method agree with test results well.

Abstract:A real-size experiment on 11 tubes was done to study the performance of centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes under bending and torsion. This paper first introduces the relevant operating method, equipment, subjects and processes. The factors that affect deformation and stiffness and the break mechanism under different loading were studied. Experimental stress analysis showed that the values of practical critical stress of steel tubes accorded well with the MISES Yielding Rule. The correlative equation (on the bearing capacity of a structural member under bending and torsion) deduced in this study may provide valuable reference for the design of this structural member.

Abstract:Experimental investigation of thin-walled concrete-filled steel tube columns with reinforced lattice angle was conducted in this study. The lattice angle was designed to reinforce the concrete-filled steel tube columns by increasing the percentage of steel cross-sectional area. Column specimens having different lengths ranged from 500mm to 3500mm were tested. The behavior and strengths of concrete-filled steel tube columns with lattice angle were investigated. In addition, concrete-filled steel tube columns having the same size but without reinforced lattice angle were also tested for comparison. Material properties of the concrete and steel used in the test specimens were measured. The test strengths are compared with the design strengths calculated using the AISC Specification and Eurocode for the design of composite structural members. A new design method was also proposed for the concrete-filled steel tube columns with reinforced lattice angle. It is shown that the design predictions from the proposed method agree with test results well.

Abstract:This study, a total of 25 specimens, aims to assess the influence of the mass replacement percentage of recycled coarse aggregates (0%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), steel tube thickness (3 mm, 4 mm, and 5 mm), load eccentricity (0.10, 0.25, and 0.40), and volume fraction of steel fiber (0%, 0.6%, 1.2%, and 1.8%) on the eccentric-compressive behaviour of steel-fiber-reinforced recycled concrete-filled square steel tube short columns. The post-peak mechanical behaviour, deformation ability, and energy consumption degrade with increasing mass replacement of recycled coarse aggregate; the load eccentricity is detrimental to the ultimate compressive strength and aggravates the lateral deflection; thicker steel tubes and the incorporation of steel fiber improve the ultimate compressive strength, deformation ability, and energy consumption. Moreover, an incremental iteration model is proposed to calculate the ultimate compressive strength of steel-fiber-reinforced recycled concrete-filled square steel tube short columns under eccentric-compressive load. Compared to current codes, the predicted values using the proposed model are close to experimental values and are inclined toward the safe side.

Abstract:In recent years, the utilization of high performance concrete has been the interests of the structural engineers and researchers. As a high performance concrete, self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is a highly flowable concrete that can fill formwork without any mechanical vibration. SCC's unique property gives it significant economic, constructability and engineering advantages. The aim of this paper is thus an attempt to study the possibility of using thin-walled hollow structural steel (HSS) columns filled with very high strength SCC. Tests on 28 HSS columns filled with very high strength SCC were conducted, where the main parameters varied are: (1) section types, circular and square; (2) slenderness ratio, from 12 to 120; and (3) load eccentricity ratio, from 0 to 0.6. Comparisons are made with predicted column strengths using the existing codes such as AISC, EC4 and DBJ13-51-2003.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of experimental studies on circular tubed steel-reinforced-concrete (TSRC) short columns subjected to axial and eccentric loading. A total of 12 columns with the key parameters of eccentricity ratio and diameter-to-thickness ratio of the steel tube were tested. The effect of shear studs on the co-work behavior of concrete and shaped steel was studied. The test results indicated that the shear studs affected little on the failure mode, bearing capacity and ductility of the eccentrically loaded circular TSRC short columns. Elastic-plastic analysis for the steel tube showed that the tubes at the compression side began to yield when the load approximately reached 90% of the peak load. Fiber-based numerical models for circular TSRC short columns were established and the results accorded well with the experimental results. Furthermore, the whole section plastic assumption in EC4 was adopted to determine the section capacity interaction diagram for circular TSRC columns.
Experimental study on axial compressive strength of concrete filled composite steel tube short columns

Abstract:To study the axial compressive strength of the concrete filled composite steel tube short column which is the concrete filled square steel tube reinforced with a central circular steel tube,10 specimens were tested under the axial compressive loading.Test results indicated that at the peak axial load the square steel tube had yielded in the vertical direction and did not yield in the lateral direction;the specimens failed in local buckling and tearing of square steel tube,crushing of concrete between the square steel tube and the circular steel tube.For most of the specimens even the longitudinal average strain reached 0.11,the residual strength remained more than 70% of the peak compressive strength.The calculated compressive stiffness was approximately 83.6% of the measured values on the average.Assuming that the steel tubes do not contribute lateral confinement to the concrete,but provides compressive strength only,the predicted compressive strengths of the specimens has good agreement with the test results.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study of the separated behavior of short (L/H=3) high strength concrete-filled rectangular hollow section (RHS) tubes concentrically loaded in compression to failure. A total of 50 specimens were tested. Experimental results showed that the concrete strength influenced the failure pattern of the specimen. The height-to-breadth ratio of the rectangular tube (varying from 1.0 to 1.6) had no evident influence on the ultimate bearing capacity of the specimen. Then based on the experimental results, a numerical separation method was successfully used to separate the compressive load carried by the steel tube and the core concrete. The equivalent One-Dimensional nonlinear stress-strain models of the steel and the confined concrete were suggested, which can be used to determine the overall behavior of the high strength concrete-filled RHS tubes. The stress-strain models have been used to numerically analyze the behavior of high strength concrete-filled RHS tubes. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results and they agreed well with each other.

Abstract:Ten slender high strength concrete(HSC) filled rectangular hollow section(RHS) steel tubular columns were tested.The primary test parameters were slenderness ratios varying from 25^4 to 71^6,steel ratios of 8.2% and 14.6%,height-to-breadth ratios varying between 1.0 and 1.6.Meanwhile,a nonlinear analysis program was produced to calculate the bearing capacity of the high strength concrete-filled RHS tubes.The experimental results agreed well with those of the numerical analysis.Furthermore,the influences of the factors,such as steel ratio,concrete strength,steel yield strength and height-to-breadth ratio,on the stability factor-slenderness ratio curves were investigated.The results showed that the bearing capacity decreased rapidly with the increasing of the slenderness ratio,and the height-to-breadth ratio(varying from 1.0 to 1.6) had no evident influence on the stability factor and relative deflection at the mid-height.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of concrete-filled steel tube can be improved with longitudinal reinforcement. With three main parameters of longitudinal reinforcement strength, reinforcement ratio and stirrup ratio, 13 short concrete-filled steel tubular column were designed and tested under axial compression. Each specimen's failure characteristics, ultimate bearing capacity and load-displacement curve were analyzed and the impacts of various parameters on the deformation and bearing capacity of concrete filled steel tube column were studied. The results indicate that: comparing with the common concreted-filled steel tube, the concreted-filled steel tubular column with inner rebar has different failure mode, stronger bearing capacity and better post-yield ductility. Reducing stirrup spacing can delay the development of local buckling. Normal reinforcement yields ahead of steel tube. The numerical analysis by finite element software ABAQUS was presented, and its results were in good agreement with test results.

Meanwhile, a numerical analysis program was produced to calculate the bearing capacity of the columns. The stress-strain models of the steel and core concrete, which were separated from the experiments of the axially compressive short columns, were used in the procedure. The numerical analysis results agreed well with the experimental results. Furthermore, the influence of the factors, such as steel ratio, concrete strength, steel strength, on the stability factor (psi)-slenderness ratio (lambda) response curves were discussed.
