Abstract:Welcome to ChineseCSCW2017, the 2017 12th Chinese Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing! This year's ChineseCSCW is sponsored by China Computer Federation (CCF), and organized by Technical Committee on Cooperative Computing (TCCC) of CCF and Southwest University. It's the first time that ChineseCSCW2017 has been an ACM SIGCHI in cooperation conference, whose proceedings are published by ACM ICPS and included in ACM Digital Library. We think this is a fantastic opportunity and start for ChineseCSCW to attract worldwide attentions and connect global Chinese CSCW scholars by cooperation with ACM, the world's largest top educational and scientific society. ChineseCSCW (previously called CCSCW) is a highly influential conference on CSCW and cooperative computing in China with a long history which has been biennially held since 1998 and annually held since 2014. Building academic bridges and platform for both Chinese and overseas CSCW researchers, practitioners and educators, ChineseCSCW investigates innovative models, theories, techniques, algorithms and methods, specially systems and domain-specific applications, for CSCW and social computing from both social and technical aspects. ChineseCSCW consistently follows a rigorous double-blind review process. We had 84 submitted papers and 21 were accepted as full papers (i.e. an acceptance rate of 25%) for presentation at the conference. The program also includes 18 posters and 12 demos. Prof. Ning Zhong of Maebashi Institute of Technology, Japan will open the conference, speaking on Big Data Based Wisdom Service: A Brain Informatics Based Systematic Approach.

Abstract:Major projects to support citizens in healthcare, government, energy-savings, disability, and the like are in the research phases or are underway, often on a large-scale. These efforts - in China, the U.S., Europe, and elsewhere aim to affect societal changes through technical means. Yet, these projects are seldom only computational, but often a combination of technical and social, interwoven to provide a suitable infrastructure for these efforts to change society. These projects are seldom only collaborative either, but collaboration and coordination play central roles in many of these efforts. CSCW cannot only learn from these efforts in the field but CSCW's research interests and findings can also help in return. This workshop aims to bring together people from numerous countries and societies who are carrying out these projects or are interested in these efforts to share architectures, designs, findings, and theories so as to promote these projects.

Abstract:Collaborative editing (CE) is an area of continuous research since early days of CSCW. Various CE systems have been studied in academia as research vehicles to investigate key technical issues in building advanced collaborative applications, and an increasing number of real-world CE systems are being developed in industry as Internet/Cloud-based CE systems/services, such as Google Docs/Wave, Subethaedit, CodoxWord, and IBM OpenCoWeb. This workshop aims to bring together CE academic researchers, industry developers, and end-users to discuss and exchange ideas on contemporary issues in researching, developing, and adopting CE systems. We have successfully organized this workshop annually at CSCW-related conferences. As CE systems are reaching more end-users, this year's workshop will, in addition to discussing classic CE technical topics, extend to cover issues that affect end-users' adoption of CE systems in their work such as privacy, security, usability, and social impacts of CE systems.

Abstract:The main issue in designing the structure for CSCW systems is to provide efficient collaboration mechanisms. A hierarchical collaboration mechanism scheme was proposed which consists of three levels: system-oriented, application-oriented and operation object-oriented collaboration support. In accordance to this hierarchical collaboration mechanism, a platform-based architecture of CSCW systems was explored that can accommodate multiple cooperative applications. With providing all of the three-layer cooperation mechanisms, multimedia desktop conference system TH-MDCS can support geographically separative group members which are of different fields, seated at their desks, cooperating at the same time or at different time by means of sharing information in such multimedia forms as video, audio, image, graphics and text to carry out various tasks together.

Abstract:Following the trend of quick development of international organizations, China has to find out her cultural orientation in her closer cooperation with international organizations. First, China should actively join different kinds of international dialogues, to advance cultural “taking” and “giving” simultaneously. Secondly, emphasize the dynamic study of “idea strategy” and the construction of “cultural politics”. Thirdly, truly comprehend and well explain the contemporary value of Chinese cultural tradition, based on the deep understanding of the practical demands of modern world and China's national interests. For example, we should exploit more theoretical space on the issue of “human rights” and “sovereign rights”. Considering the peaceful international communication, the studies of “evolutionary learning”, “communication and human behavior”, “intercultural conflict”, are good sources of inspiration.

Abstract:The computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) techniques were briefed. The basic requirements for CSCW during the life cycle of a large scale complex simulation system (LSCSS) were analyzed, and an architecture of CSCW was designed for the developing team of LSCSS. A Lotus Domino TM based system implementation of the CSCW was presented for the developing team of LSCSS. Some critical problems solved in the development of the CSCW environment were introduced. This research had been applied in the new generation Distributed Interactive Simulation system development, resulting in great improvement in both solidarity and efficiency of the developing team.

Abstract:The first ACM Summit on Computing Education in China was held on 24th and 25th October 2008. The ACM China education summit represented an important initiative, one of the steps that ACM has taken to increase its relevance to computing in China. The Summit took place in the Royal King Hotel in Beijing immediately prior to the annual meeting of Chinese Deans and Heads of computing. ACM's goal in China is to help advance computing as a science and profession. The goals of this first education summit included the promotion of the discipline of computing, learning about good practices in computing education from within China, and where possible assisting in the enhancement of the quality of computing education in China. Twenty papers were submitted following a call for papers circulated throughout top-tier Chinese universities. The submissions told a very interesting story rebarding priorities and concerns within China. The reviewing process resulted in about 60% of the papers being accepted. There were also 4 high-quality keynote speakers: Xiaoming Li from Peking University; Frans Kashoeek from MIT; Jane Prey from Microsoft Research in the US; and Larry Snyder from the University of Washington, Seattle. John White, Chief Executive Officer of ACM, gave a presentation on "ACM and China."

In order to promote ACM SIGSPATIAL and the corresponding research area in China, and encourage collaboration between SIGSPATIAL researchers in China and researchers worldwide, in late September 2009, Wuhan University, Renmin University and Microsoft Research Asia worked together to submit an application for establishing the ACM SIGSPATIAL China Chapter. The application was approved by the SIGSPATIAL Executive Committee in late October 2009.

Abstract:There are three requirements for improving the efficiency of a collaborative decision-making process. They are (1) an agile communication and interactive methods, (2) reliable information, and (3) effective processing and visualizing tools, The GIS-based Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW) system is a powerful assistant for achieving these requirements. It has been successfully applied to the Urban Planning and Land Administration Bureau of Changzhou Municipality in Jiangsu Province. This paper presents the method used in developing the CSCW system, which has been in operational use since 1997. With the assistance of the system, the efficiency of collaborative decision making has been significantly improved by reducing duplication of effort, minimizing redundant data collection and analysis, and maximizing information sharing, More reasonable decisions have been made based on the integrated information from the federated database and various analysis tools. The Bureau has become more "just and open," as the public admits. Some suggestions for further work are discussed.
The Impact of CSC Scholarships on Scientific Outputs and Collaboration.

Abstract:The China Scholarship Council (CSC) has provided financial assistance to Chinese citizens to research or study abroad and foreign citizens to study in China over twenty year, but little is known of the impact of CSC Scholarships. To fill this gap, this research-in-progress paper investigates the scientific outputs of CSC Scholarships using the data from Web of Science database. Moreover, we use several measures to describe the collaboration patterns of researchers supported by CSC Scholarships. Results show that the number of WoS publications supported by CSC Scholarships has dramatically increased during the period 2008-2017. We also find that CSC Scholarships promote Chinese researchers to collaborate with researchers from other countries/regions. Meanwhile, our results indicate that collaborating with authors from other countries could increase the international visibility and impact of papers of China.

Abstract:Computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) has led to great advances in CAD technologies. However, problems still remain. One of these problems is the difficulty to combine strong collaboration performance with powerful application function in computer supported cooperative design (CSCD) system. This paper explores solutions to this problem. We present a new approach to develop CSCD system based on single user CAD system. We used a novel collaboration framework to maintain the benefits of CSCW transparency and awareness while relieving their disadvantages. The kernel of the framework relies on CoCADToolAgent, a software agent. The communication support, protocol handling, consistency maintenance and concurrency control, group awareness, collaboration tasks and user roles management had been implemented. As an instance of this approach, we use the CoCADToolAgent to transform the commercial 2D CAD system--AutoCAD into a CSCD prototype system. As a special collaboration tool for CAD applications, CoCADtoolAgent revealed better collaboration performance than the general collaboration toolkits, such as Microsoft NetMeeting. The approach can be extended to 3D CAD system.

Abstract:The 2012 NSF Workshop on Simulation Methodology took place in the School of Management, Fudan University, Shanghai, China from July 23, 2012 to July 25, 2012. The workshop was sponsored by the National Science Foundation (USA) under Grant Number CMMI-1219403, the School of Management of Fudan University, and the Financial Engineering and Financial Risk Management Branch of the Operational Research Society of China. The theme of the 2012 NSF Workshop was computer simulation: opportunities and challenges. With new technologies, such as parallel computing, graphic processing units (GPUs), and cloud computing, and emerging areas, such as health systems and environmental systems, there are opportunities for the simulation community to broaden and advance research and applications. Thus, there is a need for identifying new opportunities and challenges in research related to emerging technologies and application areas. More specifically, emerging computing technologies and application areas include parallel computing environments, GPU, cloud computing, financial engineering, healthcare and health system, and environmental system, etc. Under this theme, the goal of the meeting was to scope new opportunities and challenges in simulation research related to new emerging computing technologies and application areas, and brainstorm how to successfully approach them. In addition, compared to other areas of operations research, the simulation community is small in China and many other countries in East Asia. The workshop was to promote simulation research attracting more researchers to the field and build international collaborations.
