Abstract:We obtain an explicit description of the endomorphisms of free-abelian by free groups together with a characterization of when they are injective and surjective. As a consequence we see that free-abelian by free groups are Hopfian and not coHopfian, and we investigate the isomorphism problem and the Brinkmann Problem for this family of groups. In particular, we prove that the isomorphism problem (undecidable in general) is decidable when restricted to finite actions, and that the Brinkmann Problem is decidable both for monomorphisms and automorphisms.

Abstract:We study fixed subgroups of automorphisms of any large-type Artin group $A_{\Gamma}$. We define a natural subgroup $\mathrm{Aut}_\Gamma(A_\Gamma)$ of $\mathrm{Aut}(A_{\Gamma})$, and for every $\gamma \in \mathrm{Aut}_\Gamma(A_\Gamma)$ we find the isomorphism type of $\mathrm{Fix}(\gamma)$ and a generating set for a finite index subgroup. We show that $\mathrm{Fix}(\gamma)$ is a finitely generated Artin group, with a uniform bound on the rank in terms of the number of vertices of $\Gamma$. Finally, we provide a natural geometric characterisation of the subgroup $\mathrm{Aut}_\Gamma(A_\Gamma)$, which informally is the maximal subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(A_\Gamma)$ leaving the Deligne complex of $A_{\Gamma}$ invariant.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the direct product $G=\pi_1(\Sigma)\times \Z^k$ for $\Sigma$ a compact orientable surface with negative Euler characteristic, and give a complete classification of its fixed subgroups of automorphisms. As a corollary, we show that $G$ contains, up to isomorphism, infinitely many fixed subgroups of automorphisms if and only if $k\geq 2$, which is a contrast to that of hyperbolic groups. As an application on Nielsen fixed point theory, we provide a family of aspherical manifolds without Jiang's Bound Index Property. Moreover, we also give some results on the fixed subgroups of the direct product $H\times \Z^k$ for $H$ a non-elementary torsion-free hyperbolic group.

Abstract:In previous work, all finite simple groups that act with fixity 4 have been classified. In this article we investigate which ones of these groups act faithfully on a compact Riemann surface of genus at least 2 with fixity four in total and in such a way that fixity 4 is exhibited on at least one orbit.

Abstract:For an automorphism & phi; of a free group Fn of rank n, Bestvina and Handel showed that the rank rk(Fix(& phi;)) of the fixed subgroup is not greater than n. Soon after Bestvina and Handel's announcement, their result was generalized by many authors in various directions. In this paper, we are interested in fixed subgroups of endomorphisms of free products, focusing on explicit bounds for their ranks. By introducing a concept of UFP degree and combining some results of O'Neill-Turner, Sela and Sykiotis, we get explicit bounds for fixed subgroups of RAAGs, stably hyperbolic groups and free products of surface groups.& COPY;2023 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:The group of 2-by-2 matrices with integer entries and determinant $\pm > 1$ can be identified either with the group of outer automorphisms of a rank two free group or with the group of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of a 2-dimensional torus. Thus this group is the beginning of three natural sequences of groups, namely the general linear groups ${\rm{GL}}(n,\Z)$, the groups of outer automorphisms of free groups of rank $n\geq 2$, and the mapping class groups of closed orientable surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$. Much of the work on mapping class groups and automorphisms of free groups is motivated by the idea that these sequences of groups are strongly analogous. In this article we highlight a few of the most striking similarities and differences between these series of groups and present a list of open problems motivated by this philosophy.

Abstract:For a compact surface Σ (orientable or not, and with boundary or not), we show that the fixed subgroup, Fix ℬ, of any family ℬ of endomorphisms of π1(Σ) is compressed in π1(Σ), i.e. rk(Fix ℬ) ≤ rk(H) for any subgroup Fix ℬ ≤ H ≤ π1(Σ). On the way, we give a partial positive solution to the inertia conjecture, both for free and for surface groups. We also investigate direct products, G, of finitely many free and surface groups, and give a characterization of when G satisfies that rk(Fix ϕ) ≤ rk(G) for every ϕ ∈ Aut(G).

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and F a saturated formation of finite groups. We say that G is quasi-F-group if for every F-eccentric chief factor H/K of G and every x. G, x induces an inner automorphism on H/K. In particular, we have the concepts of quasisoluble, quasisupersoluble, quasimetanilpotent groups, and so on. In this article, we obtain some results about the quasi-F-groups and use them to give the conditions under which a group is quasisoluble, quasimetanilpotent, or quasisupersoluble.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to determine the structure and to establish the isomorphic invariant of the finitely generated nilpotent group G of infinite cyclic commutator subgroup. Using the structure and invariant of the group which is the central extension of a cyclic group by a free abelian group of finite rank of infinite cyclic center, we provide a decomposition of G as the product of a generalized extraspecial ℤ-group and its center. By using techniques of lifting isomorphisms of abelian groups and equivalent normal form of the generalized extraspecial ℤ-groups, we finally obtain the structure and invariants of the group G.

Abstract:For a closed surface S with χ(S)<0, we show that the fixed subgroup of a family B of endomorphisms of π1(S) has rankFixB≤rankπ1(S). In particular, if B contains a non-epimorphic endomorphism, then rankFixB≤12rankπ1(S). We also show that geometric subgroups of π1(S) are inert, and hence the fixed subgroup of a family of epimorphisms of π1(S) is also inert.

Abstract:This is a study of fusion ring automorphisms leaving only the trivial element fixed. We prove that a variety of classical results on fixed-point-free automorphisms of finite groups are true in the generality of fusion rings. As a result, we show there are $8$ Grothendieck equivalence classes of fusion categories of rank less than $9$ with a fixed-point-free fusion automorphism of prime order, generalizing existing results about modular fusion categories of odd dimension.
