Abstract:Solid catalyst is widely recognized as an effective strategy to control the chirality of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). However, it is still not compatible with high density in horizontal arrays. "Trojan" catalysts strategy is one of the most effective methods to realize SWNTs with high density and has great potential in chirality control. Here, the co-realization of high density and chirality controlling for SWNTs in a low-temperature growth process is reported based on the developed solid "Trojan" catalyst. High temperature "Trojan" catalyst formation process provides sufficient catalyst number to acquire high density. These liquid "Trojan" catalysts are cooled to solid state by adopting low growth temperature (540 degrees C), which can be good template to realize the chirality controlling of SWNTs with exposing six-fold symmetry face, (111). Finally, (9, 6) and (13, 1) SWNTs enriched horizontal array with the purity of approximate to 90% and density of 4 tubes mu m(-1) is realized. The comparison between the distribution of initial catalysts and the density of as-grown tubes indicates no sacrificing on catalysts number to improve chirality selectivity. This work opens a new avenue on the catalyst's design and chirality controlling in SWNTs growth.
The Chirality Control of Horizontally Aligned Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes Based on the Catalyst Symmetry Matching

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of horizontally aligned single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)with specific chirality and high areal density remains a challenge. A recent breakthrough was achieved by the Jin Zhang's group from Peking University. They proposed a feasible route towards tuning the chirality of epitaxially-grown aligned SWNTs according to the designed catalyst lattice symmetry. With different uniform metal carbide catalysts, two different types of aligned SWNTs with specific structures, the metallic (12, 6) and semiconducting (8, 4) ones, can be synthesized separately with their chiral selectivity both over 80%, tandem with a high density of more than 10 tubes/mu m. These exciting results clearly demonstrate that it is possible to control SWNTs' structures based on the symmetry matching in structures between SWNTs and crystal surface of catalyst particles.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are potential materials for future nanoelectronics. Since the electronic and optical properties of SWNTs strongly depend on tube diameter and chirality, obtaining SWNTs with narrow (n,m) chirality distribution by selective growth or chemical separation has been an active area of research. Here, we demonstrate that a new, bimetallic FeRu catalyst affords SWNT growth with narrow diameter and chirality distribution in methane CVD. At 600C, methane CVD on FeRu catalyst produced predominantly (6,5) SWNTs according to Uv-vis-NIR absorption and photoluminescence excitation/emission (PLE) spectroscopic characterization. At 850C, the dominant semiconducting species produced are (8,4), (7,6) and (7,5) SWNTs, with much narrower distributions in diameter and chirality than materials grown by other catalysts. Further, we show that narrow-diameter/chirality growth combined with chemical separation by ion exchange chromatography (IEC) greatly facilitate achieving single-(m,n) SWNT samples, as demonstrated by obtaining highly enriched (8,4) SWNTs with near elimination of metallic SWNTs existing in the as-grown material.

Abstract:Currently, designing solid catalysts at high temperature is the main strategy to realize single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with specific chirality, meaning it is very hard and challenging to create new catalysts or faces to fit new chirality. However, low temperatures make most catalysts solid, and developing solid catalysts at low temperature is desired to realize chirality control of SWNTs. A rational approach to grow SWNTs array with different chiralities on same solid Co catalysts at low temperature (650 °C) is herein put forward. Using solid Co catalysts, near-armchair (10, 9) tubes horizontal array with ≈75% selectivity and (12, 6) tubes array with ≈82% are realized by adopting a small amount of ethanol and large amount of CO respectively. (10, 9) tubes are enriched for thermodynamic stability and (12, 6) tubes for kinetics growth rate. Both kinds of tubes show a similar symmetry to the Co (1 1 1) face with threefold symmetry for the symmetry matching nucleation mechanism proposed earlier. This method provides a new strategy to study the nucleation mechanism and more possibilities for preparing new solid catalysts to control the structure of SWNTs.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) horizontal arrays with specific chirality can be enriched using solid carbide catalysts on substrates. However, scale-up production by continuous loading of the solid catalysts onto the substrates is challenging. Described here is the preparation of a floating carbide solid catalyst (FSC) for the controlled growth of SWNTs. The FSC, titanium carbide (TiC) nanoparticle, was directly obtained in the carrier gas phase by decomposition and carbonization of the titanocene dichloride precursor at high temperature. By using the TiC nanoparticle FSC, both SWNT horizontal arrays and randomly distributed networks can be obtained. The chirality of the as-grown SWNTs were thermodynamically controlled to have fourfold symmetry. Further optimization of growth condition resulted in an abundance of (16,8) tubes with about a 74 % content. This FSC chemical vapor deposition (FSCCVD) method has potential for realizing mass growth of SWNTs with controlled structures.

Abstract:The selective growth of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNTs) is of great importance in many high-end applications represented by nanoelectronics. Here, we developed a general approach to grow horizontally aligned s-SWCNT arrays on stable temperature (ST)-cut quartz with bimetallic catalysts using carbon monoxide (CO) as both catalyst reductant and single component carbon feedstock under atmospheric pressure. The disproportionation of CO produces not only carbon species for SWCNT growth but also CO 2 , which could act as an in-situ etchant to remove both amorphous carbon and metallic tubes. The employment of bimetallic catalyst and quartz substrate facilitates the selective etching by narrowing the diameter distribution of as-grown SWCNT arrays. At the optimized conditions, we realized the selective growth of horizontally aligned s-SWCNT arrays with the content above 97% using CoCu catalysts, confirmed by Raman characterization and electrical measurements of the fabricated field effect transistor devices. This CO-based process in selective growth of s-SWCNTs has demonstrated its feasibility and universality by the broad growth window and applicability for other bimetallic catalysts, such as FeCu and CoMn. It possesses a practical potential in obtaining semiconducting channel materials for the scalable fabrication of CNT-based devices.

Abstract:Small diameter single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) arrays with larger bandgap are more desirable as near-infrared optical absorbers for the fabrication of high performance photovoltaic and photodetector devices. We report herein a rational approach to selective growth of well-aligned subnanometer diameter (∼84% between 0.75 and 0.95 nm) SWNT arrays with a density of 0.3-0.5 tubes/μm on quartz surfaces using solid Mo2C catalysts for short-time growth by low carbon feeding in hydrogen-free CVD. These subnanometer diameter SWNTs have a narrow chirality distribution (the ratio of (8,4), (8,5) and (7,6) is higher than 73%). During nanotube growth, only small size Mo nanoparticles are carbonized into stable Mo2C for catalyzing the growth of SWNTs through low carbon feeding rate over short time in the hydrogen-free environment, whereas larger catalysts are inactive due to underfeeding. Meanwhile, solid Mo2C catalysts are effective in reducing the chirality distributions of the as-grown SWNTs. Additionally, combining an annealing process after loading catalyst on the sapphire substrates, the average density is increased to ∼15 tubes/μm while maintaining small diameter and narrow chirality distribution. Our results offer more choices for structurally controlled growth of aligned-SWNTs, with potential applications in nanoelectronics.

Abstract:Bimetallic catalysts play important roles in the selective growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Using the simple salts (NH4)(6)W7O24 center dot 6H2O and Co(CH3COO)(2)center dot 4H(2)O as precursors, tungsten-cobalt catalysts were prepared. The catalysts were composed of W6Co7 intermetallic compounds and tungsten-dispersed cobalt. With the increase of the W/Co ratio in the precursors, the content of W6Co7 was increased. Because the W6Co7 intermetallic compound can enable the chirality specified growth of SWNTs, the selectivity of the resulting SWNTs is improved at a higher W/Co ratio. At a W/Co ratio of 6 : 4 and under optimized chemical vapor deposition conditions, we realized the direct growth of semi-conducting SWNTs with the purity of similar to 96%, in which similar to 62% are (14, 4) tubes. Using salts as precursors to prepare tungsten-cobalt bimetallic catalysts is flexible and convenient. This offers an efficient pathway for the large-scale preparation of chirality enriched semiconducting SWNTs.

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotubes offer a unique platform to explore the properties of TMD materials at the one-dimensional limit. Despite considerable efforts thus far, the direct growth of TMD nanotubes with controllable chirality remains challenging. Here we demonstrate the direct and facile growth of high-quality WS 2 and WSe 2 nanotubes on Si substrates using catalytic chemical vapour deposition with Au nanoparticles. The Au nanoparticles provide unique accommodation sites for the nucleation of WS 2 or WSe 2 shells on their surfaces and seed the subsequent growth of nanotubes. We find that the growth mode of nanotubes is sensitive to the temperature. With careful temperature control, we realize ~79% WS 2 nanotubes with single chiral angles, with a preference of 30° (~37%) and 0° (~12%). Moreover, we demonstrate how the geometric, electronic and optical properties of the synthesized WS 2 nanotubes can be modulated by the chirality. We anticipate that this approach using Au nanoparticles as catalysts will facilitate the growth of TMD nanotubes with controllable chirality and promote the study of their interesting properties and applications.

Abstract:We present a strategy to control the chirality of single-walled carbon nanotubes synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) over crystalline catalyst nanoparticles. Atomic-resolution imaging of nucleation points makes it possible to explore the structural correlation between the catalysts and the corresponding nanotubes. The formation of nanotubes with specific chirality could be associated with the angle of the step edge on (111) plane of the particle with respect to the growth direction of nanotubes. The result shows the potential in promoting some experimental advances in synthesis of nanotubes with the desired structure.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have shown great potential in various applications attributed to their unique structure-dependent properties. Therefore, the controlled preparation of chemically and structurally pristine SWNTs is a crucial issue for their advanced applications (e.g., nanoelectronics) and has been a great challenge for two decades. Epitaxial growth from well-defined seeds has been shown to be a promising strategy to control the structure of SWNTs. Segments of carbon nanotubes, including short pipes from cutting of preformed nanotubes and caps from opening of fullerenes or cyclodehydrogenation of polycyclic hydrocarbon precursors, have been used as the seeds to grow SWNTs. Single-chirality SWNTs were obtained with both presorted chirality-pure SWNT segments and end caps obtained from polycyclic hydrocarbon molecules with designed structure. The main challenges of nanocarbon-segment-seeded processes are the stability of the seeds, yield, and efficiency. Catalyst-mediated SWNT growth is believed to be more efficient. The composition and morphology of the catalyst nanoparticles have been widely reported to affect the chirality distribution of SWNTs. However, chirality-specific SWNT growth is hard to achieve by alternating catalysts. The specificity of enzyme-catalyzed reactions brings us an awareness of the essentiality of a unique catalyst structure for the chirality-selective growth of SWNTs. Only catalysts with the desired atomic arrangements in their crystal planes can act as structural templates for chirality-specific growth of SWNTs. We have developed a new family of catalysts, tungsten-based intermetallic compounds, which have high melting points and very special crystal structures, to facilitate the growth of SWNTs with designed chirality. By the use of W6Co7 catalysts, (12,6) SWNTs were directly grown with purity higher than 92%. Both high-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements and density functional theory simulations show that the selective growth of (12,6) tubes is due to a good structural match between the carbon atom arrangement around the nanotube circumference and the metal atom arrangement of (0 0 12) planes in the catalyst. Similarly, (16,0) SWNTs exhibit a good structural match to the (116) planes of the W6Co7 catalyst. By optimization of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) conditions, zigzag (16,0) SWNTs, which are generally known as a kinetically unfavorable species in CVD growth, were obtained with a purity of ∼80%. Generally speaking, the chirality-specific growth of SWNTs is realized by the cooperation of two factors: the structural match between SWNTs and the catalysts makes the growth of SWNTs with specific chirality thermodynamically favorable, and further manipulation of the CVD conditions results in optimized growth kinetics for SWNTs with this designed chirality. We expect that this advanced epitaxial growth strategy will pave the way for the ultimate goal of chirality-specified growth of SWNTs and will also be applicable in the controlled preparation of other nanomaterials.
Controlled synthetic chirality in macroscopic assemblies of carbon nanotubes

Abstract:There is an emerging recognition that successful utilization of chiral degrees of freedom can bring new scientific and technological opportunities to diverse research areas. Hence, methods are being sought for creating artificial matter with controllable chirality in an uncomplicated and reproducible manner. Here, we report the development of two straightforward methods for fabricating wafer-scale chiral architectures of ordered carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with tunable and giant circular dichroism (CD). Both methods employ simple approaches, (i) mechanical rotation and (ii) twist-stacking, based on controlled vacuum filtration and do not involve any sophisticated nanofabrication processes. We used a racemic mixture of CNTs as the starting material, so the intrinsic chirality of chiral CNTs is not responsible for the observed chirality. In particular, by controlling the stacking angle and handedness in (ii), we were able to maximize the CD response and achieve a record-high deep-ultraviolet ellipticity of 40 $\pm$ 1 mdeg/nm. Our theoretical simulations using the transfer matrix method reproduce the salient features of the experimentally observed CD spectra and further predict that a film of twist-stacked CNTs with an optimized thickness will exhibit an ellipticity as high as 150 mdeg/nm. The created wafer-scale objects represent a new class of synthetic chiral matter consisting of ordered quantum wires whose macroscopic properties are governed by nanoscopic electronic signatures such as van Hove singularities. These artificial structures with engineered chirality will not only provide playgrounds for uncovering new chiral phenomena but also open up new opportunities for developing high-performance chiral photonic and optoelectronic devices.

Nanocatalyst structure as a template to define chirality of nascent single-walled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Chirality is a crucial factor in a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) because it determines its optical and electronic properties. A chiral angle spanning from 0° to 30° results from twisting of the graphene sheet conforming the nanotube wall and is equivalently expressed by chiral indexes (n,m). However, lack of chirality control during SWCNT synthesis is an obstacle for a widespread use of these materials. Here we use first-principles density functional theory (DFT) and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to propose and illustrate basic concepts supporting that the nanocatalyst structure may act as a template to control the chirality during nanotube synthesis. DFT optimizations of metal cluster (Co and Cu)∕cap systems for caps of various chiralities are used to show that an inverse template effect from the nascent carbon nanostructure over the catalyst may exist in floating catalysts; such effect determines a negligible chirality control. Classical MD simulations are used to investigate the influence of a strongly interacting substrate on the structure of a metal nanocatalyst and illustrate how such interaction may help preserve catalyst crystallinity. Finally, DFT optimizations of carbon structures on stepped (211) and (321) cobalt surfaces are used to demonstrate the template effect imparted by the nanocatalyst surface on the growing carbon structure at early stages of nucleation. It is found that depending on the step structure and type of building block (short chains, single atoms, or hexagonal rings), thermodynamics favor armchair or zigzag termination, which provides guidelines for a chirality controlled process based on tuning the catalyst structure and the type of precursor gas.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are anticipated to be the successor of silicon in next-generation integrated circuits. However, one great challenge to the practical application of this concept is the need to grow horizontal semiconducting CNT arrays with very high purity. Here we show that this roadblock can be eliminated by switching the direction of an applied electric field during synthesis. This electro-renucleation approach twists the chirality of the CNTs to produce nearly defect-free s-CNTs horizontally aligned on the substrate with less than 0.1% residual metallic CNT. In principle, this residual percentage can be further reduced to less than 1 ppm simply by tuning the CNTs' diameters to around 1.3 nm. Electro-renucleation thus offers a potential pathway to practical applications of CNT electronics and opens up a new avenue for large-scale selective synthesis of semiconducting CNTs and other nanomaterials.

Abstract:High‐density horizontally aligned single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) arrays with high‐purity semiconducting tubes are promising materials for energy‐efficient electronics. However, realizing high density and high semiconducting purity through the direct‐growth method is still a challenge. Here the problem is overcome through a spatially confined approach based on a floating solid catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FSCCVD) system. A confined space is designed to change the fluid dynamics in a chemical vapor deposition reactor, offering a trapping effect for both catalyst nanoparticles and carbon fragments. Therefore, densely and uniformly distributed catalyst nanoparticles are continuously deposited on substrates, greatly increasing the growth probability and efficiency of SWNTs. Besides, the solid catalyst TiC and the oxygen‐vacancy‐enriched catalyst TiO both facilitate the growth of semiconducting tubes. As a result, SWNT horizontal arrays with a high density of 65 tubes µm−1 and a semiconducting purity of >95% are realized, which hold the potential for future application in carbon nanotube electronics.

Mo2C nanoparticles with monodisperse sizes were prepared by using molybdenum oxide-based giant clusters, (NH4)(42)[Mo132O372(H3CCOO)(30)(H2O)(72)]. 10H(3)CCOONH(4)center dot 300H(2)O(Mo-132), as the precursor that was carburized by a gas mixture of C2H5OH/H-2 during a temperature-programmed reduction. In this approach, the formation of volatile MoO3 was inhibited due to the annealing and reduction at a low temperature. As a result, uniform Mo2C nanoparticles are formed, and their narrow size-dispersion strictly determines the diameter distribution of SWNTs. During the growth process, Mo2C selectively catalyzes the scission of C-O bonds of ethanol molecules, and the resultant absorbed oxygen (O-ads) preferentially etches metallic SWNTs (m-SWNTs), leading to the high-yield of s-SWNTs. Raman spectroscopic analysis showed that most of the s-SWNTs can be identified as (14, 4), (13, 6), or (10, 9) tubes. Our findings open up the possibility of the chirality-controlled growth of aligned-SWNTs using uniform carbide nanoparticles as solid catalysts for practical nanoelectronics applications.

Abstract:Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth is regarded as the most promising method for realizing structure-specific single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) growth. In the past 20 years, many efforts dedicated to chirality-selective SWNT growth using various strategies have been reported. However, normal CVD growth under constant conditions could not fully optimize the chirality because the randomly formed cap structure allows the nucleation of all types of SWNTs and the chirality of an SWNT is unlikely to be changed during the following elongation process. We report a new CVD process that allows temperature to be periodically changed to vary SWNT chirality multiple times during elongation to build up the energetically preferred SWNT-catalyst interface. With this strategy, SWNTs with small helix angles (less than 10°), which are predicted to have lower interfacial formation energy than others, are enriched up to ~72%. Kinetic analysis of the process suggests a multiple redistribution feature whereby a large chiral angle SWNT tends to reach the near-zigzag chirality step by step with a small chiral angle change at each step, and hence, we named this method "tandem plate CVD." This method opens a door to synthesizing chirality-selective SWNTs by rational catalyst design.

Abstract:A major obstacle for the applications of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in electronic devices is their structural diversity, ending in SWNTs with diverse electrical properties. Catalytic chemical vapor deposition has shown great promise in directly synthesizing high-quality SWNTs with a high selectivity to specific chirality (n, m). During the growth process, the tube-catalyst interface plays crucial roles in regulating the SWNT nucleation thermodynamics and growth kinetics, ultimately governing the SWNT chirality distribution. Starting with the introduction of SWNT growth modes, this review seeks to extend the knowledge about chirality-selective synthesis by clarifying the energetically favored SWNT cap nucleation and the threshold step for SWNT growth, which describes how the tube-catalyst interface affects both the nucleus energy and the new carbon atom incorporation. Such understandings are subsequently applied to interpret the (n, m) specific growth achieved on a variety of templates, such as SWNT segments or predefined molecular seeds, transition metal (Fe, Co and Ni)-containing catalysts at low reaction temperatures, W-based alloy catalysts, and metal carbides at relatively high reaction temperatures. The up to date achievements on chirality-controlled synthesis of SWNTs is summarized and the remaining major challenges existing in the SWNT synthesis field are discussed.
High‐Temperature Growth of Chirality‐Enriched, Highly Crystalline Carbon Nanotubes for Efficient Single‐Chirality Separation

Abstract:A magnesia supported cobalt catalyst is developed to overcome the tradeoff between the narrow chirality distribution and the high graphitization degree of SWNTs, which promotes the growth of highly crystalline SWNTs with a narrow chirality distribution at elevated temperatures. Six distinct high‐purity (n, m) species are sorted out through gel chromatography, providing a strong material foundation for their potential advanced applications. There has been significant interest in producing single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with specific chirality to ensure consistent and predictable performance. However, chirality‐selective growth has traditionally required low reaction temperatures, causing SWNTs with low graphitization degrees. In this work, a magnesia supported cobalt catalyst (Co/MgO) is introduced for chemical vapor deposition growth of SWNTs with a narrow chirality distribution even at a high temperature of 900 °C, which promotes enhanced graphitization of SWNT walls. The achievement is attributed to the strong metal‐support interactions that prevent catalyst particle sintering under harsh reaction conditions. The resulting SWNTs provide fundamental raw materials for high‐efficiency single‐chirality separation. Because of the relatively large chiral differences between the major species and their narrow chirality distribution, the study can readily isolate six distinct (n, m) SWNT types including (6, 5), (8, 3), (9, 2), (7, 5), (7, 6), and (8, 4), with purities exceeding 91% by gel chromatography. Compared with commercially HiPco‐ and CoMoCAT SG65i‐ SWNTs, the separation efficiency and yield are greatly improved. This work demonstrates the growth of high‐quality SWNTs with a narrow chirality distribution, paving the way toward their efficient single‐chirality separation.
