Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are potential materials for future nanoelectronics. Since the electronic and optical properties of SWNTs strongly depend on tube diameter and chirality, obtaining SWNTs with narrow (n,m) chirality distribution by selective growth or chemical separation has been an active area of research. Here, we demonstrate that a new, bimetallic FeRu catalyst affords SWNT growth with narrow diameter and chirality distribution in methane CVD. At 600C, methane CVD on FeRu catalyst produced predominantly (6,5) SWNTs according to Uv-vis-NIR absorption and photoluminescence excitation/emission (PLE) spectroscopic characterization. At 850C, the dominant semiconducting species produced are (8,4), (7,6) and (7,5) SWNTs, with much narrower distributions in diameter and chirality than materials grown by other catalysts. Further, we show that narrow-diameter/chirality growth combined with chemical separation by ion exchange chromatography (IEC) greatly facilitate achieving single-(m,n) SWNT samples, as demonstrated by obtaining highly enriched (8,4) SWNTs with near elimination of metallic SWNTs existing in the as-grown material.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) possess superb properties originating from their unique chiral structures. However, accurately controlling the structure of SWCNTs remains challenging due to the structural similarities of their chiral structures, which hinders their widespread application in various fields, particularly in electronics. In recent years, much effort has been devoted to preparing single chiral SWCNTs by adopting three constructive strategies, including growth condition control for structurally unstable liquid catalysts, employing stable solid catalyst design, and pre-synthesis of carbon seeds with a well-defined shape. This review comprehensively discusses the state-of-the-art developments in these approaches as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, insights into the key challenges and future directions are provided for acquiring chirally pure SWCNTs.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have shown great potential in various applications attributed to their unique structure-dependent properties. Therefore, the controlled preparation of chemically and structurally pristine SWNTs is a crucial issue for their advanced applications (e.g., nanoelectronics) and has been a great challenge for two decades. Epitaxial growth from well-defined seeds has been shown to be a promising strategy to control the structure of SWNTs. Segments of carbon nanotubes, including short pipes from cutting of preformed nanotubes and caps from opening of fullerenes or cyclodehydrogenation of polycyclic hydrocarbon precursors, have been used as the seeds to grow SWNTs. Single-chirality SWNTs were obtained with both presorted chirality-pure SWNT segments and end caps obtained from polycyclic hydrocarbon molecules with designed structure. The main challenges of nanocarbon-segment-seeded processes are the stability of the seeds, yield, and efficiency. Catalyst-mediated SWNT growth is believed to be more efficient. The composition and morphology of the catalyst nanoparticles have been widely reported to affect the chirality distribution of SWNTs. However, chirality-specific SWNT growth is hard to achieve by alternating catalysts. The specificity of enzyme-catalyzed reactions brings us an awareness of the essentiality of a unique catalyst structure for the chirality-selective growth of SWNTs. Only catalysts with the desired atomic arrangements in their crystal planes can act as structural templates for chirality-specific growth of SWNTs. We have developed a new family of catalysts, tungsten-based intermetallic compounds, which have high melting points and very special crystal structures, to facilitate the growth of SWNTs with designed chirality. By the use of W6Co7 catalysts, (12,6) SWNTs were directly grown with purity higher than 92%. Both high-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements and density functional theory simulations show that the selective growth of (12,6) tubes is due to a good structural match between the carbon atom arrangement around the nanotube circumference and the metal atom arrangement of (0 0 12) planes in the catalyst. Similarly, (16,0) SWNTs exhibit a good structural match to the (116) planes of the W6Co7 catalyst. By optimization of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) conditions, zigzag (16,0) SWNTs, which are generally known as a kinetically unfavorable species in CVD growth, were obtained with a purity of ∼80%. Generally speaking, the chirality-specific growth of SWNTs is realized by the cooperation of two factors: the structural match between SWNTs and the catalysts makes the growth of SWNTs with specific chirality thermodynamically favorable, and further manipulation of the CVD conditions results in optimized growth kinetics for SWNTs with this designed chirality. We expect that this advanced epitaxial growth strategy will pave the way for the ultimate goal of chirality-specified growth of SWNTs and will also be applicable in the controlled preparation of other nanomaterials.

Abstract:Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth is regarded as the most promising method for realizing structure-specific single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) growth. In the past 20 years, many efforts dedicated to chirality-selective SWNT growth using various strategies have been reported. However, normal CVD growth under constant conditions could not fully optimize the chirality because the randomly formed cap structure allows the nucleation of all types of SWNTs and the chirality of an SWNT is unlikely to be changed during the following elongation process. We report a new CVD process that allows temperature to be periodically changed to vary SWNT chirality multiple times during elongation to build up the energetically preferred SWNT-catalyst interface. With this strategy, SWNTs with small helix angles (less than 10°), which are predicted to have lower interfacial formation energy than others, are enriched up to ~72%. Kinetic analysis of the process suggests a multiple redistribution feature whereby a large chiral angle SWNT tends to reach the near-zigzag chirality step by step with a small chiral angle change at each step, and hence, we named this method "tandem plate CVD." This method opens a door to synthesizing chirality-selective SWNTs by rational catalyst design.
High‐Temperature Growth of Chirality‐Enriched, Highly Crystalline Carbon Nanotubes for Efficient Single‐Chirality Separation

Abstract:A magnesia supported cobalt catalyst is developed to overcome the tradeoff between the narrow chirality distribution and the high graphitization degree of SWNTs, which promotes the growth of highly crystalline SWNTs with a narrow chirality distribution at elevated temperatures. Six distinct high‐purity (n, m) species are sorted out through gel chromatography, providing a strong material foundation for their potential advanced applications. There has been significant interest in producing single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with specific chirality to ensure consistent and predictable performance. However, chirality‐selective growth has traditionally required low reaction temperatures, causing SWNTs with low graphitization degrees. In this work, a magnesia supported cobalt catalyst (Co/MgO) is introduced for chemical vapor deposition growth of SWNTs with a narrow chirality distribution even at a high temperature of 900 °C, which promotes enhanced graphitization of SWNT walls. The achievement is attributed to the strong metal‐support interactions that prevent catalyst particle sintering under harsh reaction conditions. The resulting SWNTs provide fundamental raw materials for high‐efficiency single‐chirality separation. Because of the relatively large chiral differences between the major species and their narrow chirality distribution, the study can readily isolate six distinct (n, m) SWNT types including (6, 5), (8, 3), (9, 2), (7, 5), (7, 6), and (8, 4), with purities exceeding 91% by gel chromatography. Compared with commercially HiPco‐ and CoMoCAT SG65i‐ SWNTs, the separation efficiency and yield are greatly improved. This work demonstrates the growth of high‐quality SWNTs with a narrow chirality distribution, paving the way toward their efficient single‐chirality separation.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), a promising substitute to engineer prospective nanoelectronics, have attracted much attention because of their superb structures and physical properties. The unique properties of SWNTs rely sensitively on their specific chiral structures, including the diameters, chiral angles, and handedness. Furthermore, high-performance and integrated circuits essentially require SWNT samples with well-aligned arrays, of single conductive type and of pure chirality. Although much effort has been devoted to chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of SWNTs, their structure control, growth mechanism, and structural characterizations are still the primary obstacles for the fabrication and application of SWNT-based nanodevices. In this Account, we focus on our established CVD growth methodology to fulfill the requirements of nanodevice applications. A rational strategy was successfully exploited to construct complex architectures, selectively enrich semiconducting (s) or metallic (m) SWNTs, and control chirality. First, well-aligned and highly dense SWNT arrays are beneficial for nanodevice integration. For the directed growth mode, anisotropic interactions between the SWNTs and the crystallographic structure of substrate are crucial for their growth orientation. Just as crystals possess various symmetries, SWNTs with controlled geometries have the corresponding turning angles. Their complex architectures come from the synergetic effect of lattice and gas flow directed modes. Especially, the aligned orientations of SWNTs on graphite are chirality-selective, and their chiral angles, handedness, and (n,m) index have been conveniently and accurately determined. Second, UV irradiation and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) washing-off methods have been explored to selectively remove m-SWNTs, leaving only s-SWNT arrays on the surface. Moreover, the UV-assisted technique takes the advantages of low cost and high efficiency and it directly produces a high ratio of s-SWNT arrays. We also designed a smart scotch tape to sort out the s-SWNTs and m-SWNTs from the as-grown mixture with 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane and triethoxyphenylsilane as glues, respectively. This is analogous to the mechanical exfoliation of a graphene sheet. Third, the obtained SWNT intramolecular junctions obtained by temperature-mediated CVD indicate that temperature can seriously affect the SWNT's chirality during its growth. Importantly, the cloning method can validate the chirality-controlled growth of SWNTs, and the cloning efficiency is significantly improved on a quartz surface. Well-aligned SWNT arrays with a high density and controlled structures are highly desirable for carbon nanoelectronics. We hope that the advanced methodology used here will promote their controlled preparation and provide insights into the growth mechanism of SWNTs.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) directly synthesized on surfaces are promising building blocks for nanoelectronics. The structures and the arrangement of the SWNTs on surfaces determine the quality and density of the fabricated nanoelectronics, implying the importance of structure controlled growth of SWNTs on surfaces. This review summarizes the recent research status in controlling the orientation, length, density, diameter, metallicity, and chirality of SWNTs directly synthesized on surfaces by chemical vapor deposition, together with a session presenting the characterization method of the chirality of SWNTs. Finally, the remaining major challenges are discussed and future research directions are proposed.
Nanocatalyst structure as a template to define chirality of nascent single-walled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Chirality is a crucial factor in a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) because it determines its optical and electronic properties. A chiral angle spanning from 0° to 30° results from twisting of the graphene sheet conforming the nanotube wall and is equivalently expressed by chiral indexes (n,m). However, lack of chirality control during SWCNT synthesis is an obstacle for a widespread use of these materials. Here we use first-principles density functional theory (DFT) and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to propose and illustrate basic concepts supporting that the nanocatalyst structure may act as a template to control the chirality during nanotube synthesis. DFT optimizations of metal cluster (Co and Cu)∕cap systems for caps of various chiralities are used to show that an inverse template effect from the nascent carbon nanostructure over the catalyst may exist in floating catalysts; such effect determines a negligible chirality control. Classical MD simulations are used to investigate the influence of a strongly interacting substrate on the structure of a metal nanocatalyst and illustrate how such interaction may help preserve catalyst crystallinity. Finally, DFT optimizations of carbon structures on stepped (211) and (321) cobalt surfaces are used to demonstrate the template effect imparted by the nanocatalyst surface on the growing carbon structure at early stages of nucleation. It is found that depending on the step structure and type of building block (short chains, single atoms, or hexagonal rings), thermodynamics favor armchair or zigzag termination, which provides guidelines for a chirality controlled process based on tuning the catalyst structure and the type of precursor gas.
The Chirality Control of Horizontally Aligned Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes Based on the Catalyst Symmetry Matching

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of horizontally aligned single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)with specific chirality and high areal density remains a challenge. A recent breakthrough was achieved by the Jin Zhang's group from Peking University. They proposed a feasible route towards tuning the chirality of epitaxially-grown aligned SWNTs according to the designed catalyst lattice symmetry. With different uniform metal carbide catalysts, two different types of aligned SWNTs with specific structures, the metallic (12, 6) and semiconducting (8, 4) ones, can be synthesized separately with their chiral selectivity both over 80%, tandem with a high density of more than 10 tubes/mu m. These exciting results clearly demonstrate that it is possible to control SWNTs' structures based on the symmetry matching in structures between SWNTs and crystal surface of catalyst particles.

Abstract:ConspectusKnowing how nanomaterials nucleate and dynamically evolve at the nanoscale is crucial to understanding and in turn controlling the structure and properties of a wide variety of materials, among which single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with chirality-dependent properties is a typical example. Catalyst takes a central role in guiding the SWCNT growth. An in-depth understanding of the growth mechanism of SWCNTs requires knowledge of the catalyst dynamic behavior during the chemical vapor deposition process, where real-time atomic-scale observations are needed. The high spatial, temporal, and energy resolution makes the state-of-the-art aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscope (ETEM) a superior tool for tracking the catalyst evolution and the SWCNT growth.Several key factors and processes, including the catalyst stability, carbon diffusion pathway, nucleation site, and growth modes of nanotubes, greatly influence the structure of SWCNTs. This Account summarizes our recent progress in the ETEM investigation of the dynamic catalyst behavior and nucleation of SWCNTs. We first compare the different growth modes of SWCNTs on two types of catalyst-stable solid intermetallic Co7W6 and unstable monometallic catalysts. Then we address the origin of different growth modes and chirality selectivity by revealing the atomic-scale stability and evolution of catalysts under carbon feed conditions and the observation of the in situ growth of SWCNTs on catalysts. We also discuss the catalyst-support interaction and the possible influence on SWCNT growth. In the end, we summarize the present achievements and future challenges.We carefully compare the difference in the ordinary Co catalyst and Co7W6 catalyst which has shown great chirality selectivity in SWCNT growth. Direct imaging by ETEM demonstrated that solid catalysts initiated the growth of SWCNTs with diameters smaller (dNT) than those of the catalyst particles (dNP) (dNT < dNP), whereas molten catalyst nanoparticles produced SWCNTs with similar diameters (dNT ≈ dNP). ETEM combined with in situ synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrated that the Co7W6 catalyst maintained a solid stable structure under carbon feed conditions at 700-1000 °C, demonstrating the feasibility in acting as a structure template to grow SWCNTs. By contrast, the state and composition of the Co catalyst were changing during SWCNT growth. The near-surface lattice spacings of Co7W6 remained unchanged under carbon feed condition with carbon diffusion on the surface, whereas the solid Co catalyst underwent dynamic expansion and contraction due to carbon penetration into and precipitation out of Co nanoparticles. These two different pathways of carbon diffusion on or in catalysts indicate the distinctly different growth mechanisms of SWCNTs: the epitaxial growth of SWCNTs with specified chirality on the facets of Co7W6 nanocrystals and the nonselective growth of SWCNTs by the Co catalyst with Co/CoC3 as the active species. Besides the SWCNT-catalyst interface, the catalyst-support interface is also of importance in SWCNT growth. The atomic-scale information on catalyst dynamics provides a deep mechanistic understanding of SWCNT growth and will boost the development of the structure-controlled synthesis of SWCNTs and other nanomaterials.

Abstract:Due to their excellent properties, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been regarded as one of the most potential materials for future applications in nanoelectronic devices. However, there is a huge gulf between production and applications. To meet the needs for applications, SWNTs’ chirality, metallic/semiconducting property and morphology should be controlled in the growth process. Together with our recent works, we present herein a brief review on the growth of SWNTs on surface with controlled structures, including 1) Cap engineering for SWNTs growth with controlled chirality; 2) Reaction activity diversity induced growth of semiconducting SWNTs; and 3) Combination of two growth modes for fabricating SWNTs on surface with controlled morphology.

Abstract:Currently, designing solid catalysts at high temperature is the main strategy to realize single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with specific chirality, meaning it is very hard and challenging to create new catalysts or faces to fit new chirality. However, low temperatures make most catalysts solid, and developing solid catalysts at low temperature is desired to realize chirality control of SWNTs. A rational approach to grow SWNTs array with different chiralities on same solid Co catalysts at low temperature (650 °C) is herein put forward. Using solid Co catalysts, near-armchair (10, 9) tubes horizontal array with ≈75% selectivity and (12, 6) tubes array with ≈82% are realized by adopting a small amount of ethanol and large amount of CO respectively. (10, 9) tubes are enriched for thermodynamic stability and (12, 6) tubes for kinetics growth rate. Both kinds of tubes show a similar symmetry to the Co (1 1 1) face with threefold symmetry for the symmetry matching nucleation mechanism proposed earlier. This method provides a new strategy to study the nucleation mechanism and more possibilities for preparing new solid catalysts to control the structure of SWNTs.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been attracting tremendous attention owing to their structure (chirality) dependent outstanding properties, which endow them with great potential in a wide range of applications. The preparation of chirality-pure SWCNTs is not only a great scientific challenge but also a crucial requirement for many high-end applications. As such, research activities in this area over the last two decades have been very extensive. In this review, we summarize recent achievements and accumulated knowledge thus far and discuss future developments and remaining challenges from three aspects: controlled growth, postsynthesis sorting, and characterization techniques. In the growth part, we focus on the mechanism of chirality-controlled growth and catalyst design. In the sorting part, we organize and analyze existing literature based on sorting targets rather than methods. Since chirality assignment and quantification is essential in the study of selective preparation, we also include in the last part a comprehensive description and discussion of characterization techniques for SWCNTs. It is our view that even though progress made in this area is impressive, more efforts are still needed to develop both methodologies for preparing ultrapure (e.g., >99.99%) SWCNTs in large quantity and nondestructive fast characterization techniques with high spatial resolution for various nanotube samples.

Abstract:Bimetallic catalysts play important roles in the selective growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Using the simple salts (NH4)(6)W7O24 center dot 6H2O and Co(CH3COO)(2)center dot 4H(2)O as precursors, tungsten-cobalt catalysts were prepared. The catalysts were composed of W6Co7 intermetallic compounds and tungsten-dispersed cobalt. With the increase of the W/Co ratio in the precursors, the content of W6Co7 was increased. Because the W6Co7 intermetallic compound can enable the chirality specified growth of SWNTs, the selectivity of the resulting SWNTs is improved at a higher W/Co ratio. At a W/Co ratio of 6 : 4 and under optimized chemical vapor deposition conditions, we realized the direct growth of semi-conducting SWNTs with the purity of similar to 96%, in which similar to 62% are (14, 4) tubes. Using salts as precursors to prepare tungsten-cobalt bimetallic catalysts is flexible and convenient. This offers an efficient pathway for the large-scale preparation of chirality enriched semiconducting SWNTs.

Abstract:The chirality structure of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) strongly depends on the composition of catalyst used in the chemical vapor deposition process. In this study, we develop a porous magnesia supported manganese-rhenium (MnRe/MgO) catalyst for chirality-selective synthesis of SWNTs. Detailed characterizations reveal that (6,5) tubes with a selectivity higher than 70% are grown from the Re-rich MnRe/MgO catalyst. By comparing the SWNT growth results with those of monometallic Mn or Re, the formation of sigma phase, an intermetallic compound occurring in transition-metal alloy systems, is revealed to be crucial for the dominant synthesis of (6,5) SWNTs. This work not only extends the application of sigma phase alloy for catalytic synthesis of SWNTs, but also sheds lights on the growth of SWNTs with a high chirality selectivity.

Abstract:Direct growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on flat substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is very important for the application of SWNTs in nanodevices. In the growth process, catalysts play an important role in controlling the structure of SWNTs. Over the years, we have systematically studied the size-controlled synthesis of Fe-based nanoparticles and the CVD growth of SWNTs, especially the horizontally aligned SWNTs, catalyzed by these produced nanoparticles. Some new catalysts were also developed. Among them, Cu is shown to be a superior catalyst for growing SWNT arrays on both silicon and quartz substrates and Pb is a unique catalyst from which one can obtain SWNTs without any metallic contaminant. SWNTs prepared with both Cu and Pb are very suitable for building high-performance nanodevices. These studies are also very helpful for further understanding the growth mechanism of SWNTs.

Abstract:The synthesis of high-quality chirality-pure single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is vital for their applications. It is of high importance to modernize the synthesis processes to decrease the synthesis temperature and improve the quality and yield of SWCNTs. This review is dedicated to the chirality-selective synthesis, sorting of SWCNTs, and applications of chirality-pure SWCNTs. The review begins with a description of growth mechanisms of carbon nanotubes. Then, we discuss the synthesis methods of semiconducting and metallic conductivity-type and single-chirality SWCNTs, such as the epitaxial growth method of SWCNT ("cloning") using nanocarbon seeds, the growth method using nanocarbon segments obtained by organic synthesis, and the catalyst-mediated chemical vapor deposition synthesis. Then, we discuss the separation methods of SWCNTs by conductivity type, such as electrophoresis (dielectrophoresis), density gradient ultracentrifugation (DGC), low-speed DGC, ultrahigh DGC, chromatography, two-phase separation, selective solubilization, and selective reaction methods and techniques for single-chirality separation of SWCNTs, including density gradient centrifugation, two-phase separation, and chromatography methods. Finally, the applications of separated SWCNTs, such as field-effect transistors (FETs), sensors, light emitters and photodetectors, transparent electrodes, photovoltaics (solar cells), batteries, bioimaging, and other applications, are presented.

Abstract:Synthesizing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a narrow chirality distribution is essential for obtaining pure chirality materials through postgrowth sorting techniques. Using carbon monoxide chemical vapor deposition, we devise a ruthenium (Ru) catalyst supported by silica for the bulk production of SWCNTs containing only a few ( n , m ) species. The result is attributed to the limited carbon dissociation on the supported Ru clusters, favoring the growth of only small-diameter SWCNTs at comparable growth rates. The resulting materials expedite high-purity single chirality separation using gel chromatography, leading to unprecedented yields of 3.5% for (9, 1) and 5.2% for (9, 2) nanotubes, which surpass those separated from HiPco SWCNTs by two orders of magnitude. This work sheds light on the large-quantity synthesis of SWCNTs with enriched species beyond near-armchair ones for their high-yield separation.
