Abstract:An on-chip three-mode division multiplexing circuit using a simple ADC-based TE 0 & TE 1 & TE 2 (de)multiplexer is demonstrated to improve the link capacity of on-chip optical interconnects. The proposed (de)multiplexer does not contain any tapered waveguide which is different from the previous mode (de)multiplexer based on ADCs. Here, we choose multimode waveguide width first and then confirm corresponding width of the other two waveguides. Thus the bus waveguide without any tapers can not only reduce complexity of (de)multiplexer but also reduce difficulty of the fabrication. Our simulation results show that the hybrid multiplexer has relatively low loss and low crosstalk about −40 dB, −26.99 dB and −28.72 dB for each mode around 1550 nm with a width-variation w =±25 nm. These properties make the proposed mode-(de)multiplexer suitable for application in high-capacity data transmission.

Abstract:Optical interconnect is a potential solution to attain the large bandwidth on-chip communications needed in high-performance computers in a low-power and low-cost manner. Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) is an emerging technology that scales the capacity of a single wavelength carrier by the number of modes in a multimode waveguide, and is attractive as a cost-effective means for high bandwidth density on-chip communications. Advanced modulation formats with high spectral efficiency in MDM networks can further improve the data rates of the optical link. Here, we demonstrate an intra-chip MDM communications link employing advanced modulation formats with two waveguide modes. We demonstrate a compact single wavelength carrier link that is expected to support 2 x 100 Gb/s mode multiplexed capacity. The network comprised integrated microring modulators at the transmitter, mode multiplexers, multimode waveguide interconnect, mode demultiplexers, and integrated germanium on silicon photodetectors. Each of the mode channels achieves 100 Gb/s line rate with 84 Gb/s net payload data rate at 7% overhead for hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) in the OFDM/16-QAM signal transmission.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate on-chip modal crosstalk mitigation over two mode-division multiplexing (MDM) integrated circuits supporting four and eleven waveguide modes employing low-coherence matched detection. 30-Gbaud 8-PSK mode-multiplexed signal is successfully transmitted over the circuits without using multiple-in-multiple-output (MIMO) processing under a maximum modal crosstalk of 10 dB. Ten-mode-multiplexed on-chip transmission achieves a total capacity of 900 Gbit/s. This work shows the feasibility of using high-order modes in on-chip MDM transmission for future high-capacity optical interconnects.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a four-mode division (de)multiplexer capable of operating in two distinct wavebands centered at 1550 nm and 1970 nm. The phase matching condition can be established across multiple wavebands in the asymmetric directional couplers. The 2 μm light can be coupled back and forth multiple times with a total coupling length that equals the minimum coupling length of the 1.55 μm light, and the structure could be scaled to more mode channels. As a proof of concept, the fabricated dual-band four-mode (TE0-TE3) device exhibits low insertion losses and crosstalk < 2.2 dB and < −13.0 dB from 1510 to 1590 nm, < 3.1 dB and < −10.6 dB from 1950 to 2000 nm, respectively. Moreover, we further demonstrate 4 × 114 Gbps optical transmission at 1.55 μm waveband and record-high 4 × 84 Gbps optical transmission at 2 μm waveband with PAM8 signals in the fabricated devices, respectively. The results indicate that the demonstrated multi-band mode division (de)multiplexer is promising for future chip-scale high-speed optical interconnects across multi-wavebands.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a net capacity per wavelength of 1.23 Tb/s with 30 GBaud 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) signals over a single silicon-on-insulator (SOI) multimode waveguide for optical interconnects employing $11 \times 11$ multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) digital signal processing. In order to simplify the receiver architecture for coherent optical interconnects, we further propose and evaluate an on-chip self-homodyne coherent detection (SHCD) scheme. In the experiment, 30 Gbaud quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals carried by 10 waveguide modes are successfully recovered with bit error rates (BERs) below 7% forward error correction (FEC) threshold using the pilot tone delivered by ${{\rm TE}_0}$ mode as a local oscillator. Around 10% penalty on error vector magnitude (EVM) is observed due to modal cross talk compared to homodyne detection.

Abstract:We propose a novel structure of a mode (de) multiplexer that realizes an on-chip (de) multiplexing function in a two-step process consisting of a bridged coupler and an oval mode converter. According to the two-step principle, we design and fabricate a three-mode (TE0, TE2, and TE4) (de) multiplexer with the standard silicon-on-isolator (SOI) technology. The measured crosstalk of the device is lower than -22.0 dB, -19.0 dB, and -16.0 dB for TE0, TE2, and TE4 modes, respectively, for wavelengths ranging from 1525 to 1585 nm. The device is tested in both single-wavelength and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems with 128 Gb/s (32 Gbaud) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation signals. We experimentally demonstrate 96-channel (32 - wavelength x 3 - mode) on-chip WDM and mode-division multiplexing (MDM) transmission. Considering a single lane bit rate of 128 Gb/s, an on-chip data capacity of similar to 10 Tb/s is achieved. To our best knowledge, this paper is the first demonstration of a Terabit on-chip WDM-MDM system that shows ultrahigh band-width communication on a single silicon chip.

Abstract:A five-channel mode division multiplexed on-chip optical bus is designed and demonstrated on a submicron-thick InP membrane wafer bonded on a Si substrate. Dual-core adiabatic tapers are leveraged for realization of the mode (de)multiplexers. The optimized device shows low excess optical loss of maximum 0.14 dB compared to a reference waveguide and low cross talk of maximum −18.5 dB for all five channels over a broad optical bandwidth of 1510–1600 nm. High fabrication tolerance to width variations is also demonstrated, where a low excess loss of less than 1 dB and a low cross talk of less than −14 dB are maintained in the range of 1530–1585 nm, covering the C-band, when the width varies by up to 50 nm. The demonstrated results show an essential step toward a monolithic photonic layer on top of electronic chips for high-capacity on-chip optical interconnects.

Abstract:We present a simultaneous WDM and orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode photonic chip multiplexer, and demonstrate data transmission of 8xWDM channels on 2xOAM modes, each carrying 10-Gbit/s OOK data through an 800-m ring-core OAM fiber. All 16 channels attain BERs below the 7% FEC limit.

Abstract:Recently, optical mode-division multiplexing has drawn a lot of attention due to its ability to increase the optical communication capacity in one physical channel with a single wavelength carrier. In this Letter, we demonstrate reconfigurable mode-selective modulation which is potentially useful for on-chip mode-multiplexed photonic systems. The device consists of two mode exchangers and one TE1 mode modulator. The mode exchanger is based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer that performs mode exchange between TE0 and TE1 modes. The TE1 mode modulator consists of a pair of 1×3/3×1 multimode interferometers acting as a mode (de)multiplexer. It only selectively modulates the TE1 mode while bypassing the TE0 mode. 32 Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) modulation is successfully demonstrated for both input TE0 and TE1 modes. This device can be used as a building block for on-chip multimode interconnect networks.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the use of silicon microring modulators in an integrated mode-division multiplexing (MDM) network for short-reach interconnects using discrete multitone (DMT) modulation. A fiber grating coupler array is used as a high-speed optical interface between the on-chip mode channels and off-chip multicore fiber (MCF). The whole link has a crosstalk level lower than -23.1 dB. The MDM network can work without the crosstalk compensation of digital signal processing. We present experimental results of the linearity of the silicon microring modulator in terms of spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR). The third-order intermodulation distortion SFDR is 93.4 dB/Hz(2/3) at 20 GHz. We can improve system performance by using adaptive nonlinear equalizer at the DMT receiver to mitigate transmitter and transmission impairments. An aggregate bitrate above 312 Gb/s is achieved with a bit error ratio of 3.8 x 10(-3). With the addition of nonlinear equalizer, the line rates of the MDM network can be further increased to about 330 Gb/s. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of single wavelength DMT transmission in MDM network with MCF.
Silicon Mode-(De)multiplexer for a Hybrid Multiplexing System to Achieve Ultrahigh Capacity Photonic Networks-on-chip with a Single-Wavelength-carrier Light

Abstract:Hybrid multiplexing technology combining polarization multiplexing and mode multiplexing is presented to expand the capacity of photonic networks-on-chip by 2N times with a multimode optical waveguide which supports 2N guided-modes. Only one laser diode is needed for such a multiplexing system. A novel mode-(de)multiplexer with low excess-loss and low crosstalk is proposed by utilizing a structure with cascaded asymmetrical directional couplers. A 1×4 mode-(de)multiplexer is designed as an example. It is possible to achieve more channels (e.g., 2N=16) with two orthogonal polarizations. When an array of high-speed optical modulators (e.g., 70Gbps) is integrated, the total capacity of an on-chip photonic link can be over 1Tbps with a single-wavelength-carrier light.
