Abstract:Six-times more carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is removed each year by terrestrial photosynthesis than fossil fuel emissions. However, the carbon is mostly returned to the atmosphere by decomposition. We found a 3775-year-old ancient wood log buried 2 meters belowground that was preserved far beyond its expected lifetime. The wood had near-perfect preservation, with carbon loss less than 5% compared to a modern sample. The lack of decay is likely due to the low permeability of the compact clay soil at the burial site. Our observation suggests a hybrid nature-engineering approach for carbon removal by burying woody biomass in similar anoxic environments. We estimate a global sequestration potential of up to 10 gigatonnes CO 2 per year with existing technology at a low cost of 100 per tonne after optimization.

An In-Situ Technique for Producing Low-Cost Agricultural Biochar

Abstract:Application of biochar to agricultural soils is effective to sequester atmospheric carbon and improve soil quality, but current pyrolysis and transportation costs are high, making biochar too costly to be used at the field scale. This study developed a new in-situ technique, burning and soil covering (B-SC), which can be used by farmers for production of biochar with crop residue. In this study, the air-dried feedstocks, elephant grass and corn residue, were burnt in situ for biochar production in the field. After approximately 90% of the leaves were combusted, the burning process was dramatically slowed down by covering the feedstock with soil. The biochar yield averaged 18.0 ± 1.3 (n = 15) and 13.7 ± 1.3 (n = 10) kg per 100 kg air-dried feedstock for the elephant grass and corn residue, respectively. The biochar properties were suitable for soil improvement. The inputs for biochar production of the B-SC process only included low labor force, open field, feedstock (e.g., grass and crop residue), and simple tools. The operation time for processing 10 kg of the corn residue by an individual farmer was 24.4 ± 4.1 min (n = 10). As compared with the conventional field burning process, the B-SC process drastically shortened the time for biomass burning and generated a significantly lower emission of smoke and thermal energy. This simple technique can be particularly practical and effective for farmers to improve the soils of poor quality in China.
Multiple Abiotic and Biotic Drivers of Long‐term Wood Decomposition Within and among Species in the Semi‐arid Inland Dunes: A Dual Role for Stem Diameter

Abstract:Litter decomposition in sunny, semi-arid and arid ecosystems is controlled by both biotic factors including litter traits and abiotic factors including UV light, but for wood decomposition it still remains uncertain which of these environmental factors are the predominant controls among different woody species. In these dry ecosystems, it is likely that the stem diameter and spatial position of the dead wood are of particular importance especially where wood can be buried versus exposed due to substrate displacement by wind. Here we focus on the fact that stem diameter can affect decomposition rates both via the relative surface exposure to sunlight or soil and via higher resource quality of narrower stems to decomposers. In a field manipulation experiment, we investigated the relative importance of litter position (sand burial vs. surface vs. suspended above the surface), UV radiation (block versus pass) and stem diameter class (<2, 2–4, 4–8, 8–13 and 13–20 mm) on the mass loss of woody litters of four shrub species in an inland dune ecosystem in northern China. We found that after 34 months of in situ incubation, the mass loss of buried woody litters was three times faster than those of suspended and surface woody litters (53.5 ± 2.7%, 17.0 ± 1.0% and 14.4 ± 1.2%, respectively). In surface and suspended positions, litter decomposition rates were almost equally low and most mass loss was during the first 2 years, when bark was still attached and UV radiation had no significant effect on woody litter mass loss. These findings suggest that sand burial is the main environmental driver of wood decomposition via its control on microbial activity. Moreover, wood N and diameter class were the predominant factors driving woody litter decomposition. A key finding was that wider stems had slower litter decomposition rates not only directly (presumably via greater relative surface exposure) but also indirectly via their higher wood dry matter content or lower wood N; these effects were modulated by litter position. Our findings highlight a dual role of stem diameter on wood decomposition, that is, via relative surface exposure and via wood traits. The accuracy and confidence of global carbon cycling models would be improved by incorporating the different effects of stem diameter on woody litter decomposition and below-ground wood decomposition processes in drylands.
Scalable, economical, and stable sequestration of agricultural fixed carbon

Abstract:We describe a scalable, economical solution to the carbon dioxide problem. CO 2 is captured from the atmosphere by plants, and the harvested vegetation is then buried in an engineered dry biolandfill. Plant biomass can be preserved for hundreds to thousands of years by burial in a dry environment with sufficiently low thermodynamic " Water Activity, " which is the relative humidity in equilibrium with the biomass. Maintaining a dry environment within the engineered dry biolandfill is assisted by salt that preserves biomass, which has been known since Biblical times. A "Water Activity" <60%, assisted by salt, will not support life, suppressing anaerobic organisms, thus preserving the biomass for thousands of years. Current agricultural costs, and biolandfill costs, indicate US$60/tonne of sequestered CO 2 which corresponds to ~US$0.53 per gallon of gasoline. The technology is scalable owing to the large area of land available for nonfood biomass sources. If biomass production is scaled to the level of a major crop, existing CO 2 can be extracted from the atmosphere, and will simultaneously sequester a significant fraction of world CO 2 emissions.
Research on Biomass Waste Utilization Based on Pollution Reduction and Carbon Sequestration

Abstract:Biomass waste in agricultural and forestry production has low value, large volume, disordered texture, high water content, and high recycling costs, disturbing its biomass waste treatment. In terms of mainstream treatment methods, incineration directly releases carbon dioxide, dust, and other pollutants, while landfills produce carbon dioxide and methane with stronger greenhouse effects. In response to this problem—taking pollution reduction, carbon sequestration, and the resource utilization of biomass waste as the purpose—a mode of in-situ, harmlessness, homogenization, reduction, automation, inorganic transformation, resource utilization, and carbon sequestration is proposed, which reduces recycling costs and improves economic efficiency and operability with carbonization as the key technique. The carbonization mechanism of biomass waste was first investigated using TGA analysis to obtain the key technical parameters of in-situ carbonization, and then biomass carbonization was divided into two stages: in-situ carbonization and factory carbonization. Thus, a process is constructed for in-situ crushing, carbonization, screening, and recycling, which promotes the recovery efficiency of biomass waste, including domestic waste. Moreover, on the basis of massive experiments, a carbon-based material was invented where, through wide applications in architecture, huge carbon can be stored in building materials; thus, a novel method of biomass waste resource utilization, carbon sequestration, and artificial carbon pool construction was established. Among them, with the convenient collection of biomass waste as the premise, the economic and reasonable carbonization process is a pivotal step to guarantee the wide application of carbon-based materials, and pollution reduction and carbon sequestration are the final purposes. This novel mode is conducive to saving resources and realizing carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals with significant economic, ecological, and social benefits. The novelty lies in five aspects. Firstly, differing from current research on pollution reduction, carbon reduction, and carbon balance, further research on carbon sequestration was proposed. Secondly, the feasibility of reducing re-emission through carbon transfer was demonstrated. Thirdly, in-situ carbonization to recycle biomass waste was constructed. Fourthly, through carbonization, the inorganic transformation of biomass waste avoided carbon re-emission, especially methane emissions. Last but not the least, carbonization products achieved carbon sequestration and constructed an artificial carbon pool.

Abstract:Abstract Background Wood harvesting and storage (WHS) is a hybrid Nature-Engineering combination method to combat climate change by harvesting wood sustainably and storing it semi-permanently for carbon sequestration. To date, the technology has only been purposefully tested in small-scale demonstration projects. This study aims to develop a concrete way to carry out WHS at large-scale. Results We describe a method of constructing a wood storage facility, named Wood Vault, that can bury woody biomass on a mega-tonne scale in specially engineered enclosures to ensure anaerobic environments, thus preventing wood decay. The buried wood enters a quasi-geological reservoir that is expected to stay intact semi-permanently. Storing wood in many environments is possible, leading to seven versions of Wood Vault: (1) Burial Mound (Tumulus or Barrow), (2) Underground (Pit, Quarry, or Mine), (3) Super Vault, (4) Shelter, (5) AquaOpen or AquaVault with wood submerged under water, (6) DesertOpen or DesertVault in dry regions, (7) FreezeVault in cold regions such as Antarctica. Smaller sizes are also possible, named Baby Vault. A prototype Wood Vault Unit (WVU) occupies 1 hectare (ha, 100 m by 100 m) of surface land, 20 m tall, stores up to 100,000 m 3 of wood, sequestering 0.1 MtCO 2 . A 1 MtCO 2 y −1 sequestration rate can be achieved by collecting currently unused wood residuals (WR) on an area of 25,000 km 2 , the size of 10 typical counties in the eastern US, corresponding to an average transportation distance of less than 100 km. After 30 years of operation, such a Wood Vault facility would have sequestered 30 MtCO 2 , stored in 300 WVUs, occupying a land surface of 300 ha. The cost is estimated at $10–50/tCO 2 with a mid-point price of $30/tCO 2 . To sequester 1 GtCO 2 y −1 , wood can be sourced from currently unexploited wood residuals on an area of 9 Mkm 2 forested land (9 million square kilometers, size of the US), corresponding to a low areal harvesting intensity of 1.1 tCO 2 ha −1 y −1 . Alternatively, giga-tonne scale carbon removal can be achieved by harvesting wood at a medium harvesting intensity of 4 tCO 2 ha −1 y −1 on 3 Mkm 2 of forest (equivalent to increasing current world wood harvest rate by 25%), or harvest on 0.8 Mkm 2 forest restored from past Amazon deforestation at high harvest intensity, or many combinations of these and other possibilities. It takes 1000 facilities as discussed above to store 1 GtCO 2 y −1 , compared to more than 6000 landfills currently in operation in the US. After full closure of a Wood Vault, the land can be utilized for recreation, agriculture, solar farm, or agrivoltaics. A more distributed small operator model (Baby Vault) has somewhat different operation and economic constraints. A 10 giga-tonne sequestration rate siphons off only 5% of total terrestrial net primary production, thus possible with WHS, but extreme caution needs to be taken to ensure sustainable wood sourcing. Conclusions Our technical and economic analysis shows that Wood Vault can be a powerful tool to sequester carbon reliably, using a variety of wood sources. Most pieces of the technology already exist, but they need to be put together efficiently in practice. Some uncertainties need to be addressed, including how durability of buried wood depends on detailed storage methods and burial environment, but the science and technology are known well enough to believe the practicality of the method. The high durability, verifiability and low-cost makes it already an attractive option in the current global carbon market. Woody biomass stored in Wood Vaults is not only a carbon sink to combat current climate crisis, but also a valuable resource for the future that can be used as biomass/bioenergy and carbon supply. The quantity of this wood utilization can be controlled carefully to maintain a desired amount of CO 2 in the atmosphere to keep the Earth’s climate from diving into the next ice age, acting as a climate thermostat. The CO 2 drawdown time is on the order of 100 years while the ramp-up time is a decade. A sense of urgency is warranted because the CO 2 removal rate is limited by biosphere productivity, thus delayed action means a loss of opportunity. In conclusion, WHS provides a tool for managing our Earth system, which will likely remain forever in the Anthropocene.

Abstract:The hypothesis that seaweed farming contributes to carbon burial below the farms was tested by quantifying burial rates in 20 seaweed farms distributed globally, ranging from 2 to 300 years in operation and from 1 ha to 15,000 ha in size. This involved combining analyses of organic carbon density with sediment accumulation rate in sediments below seaweed farms relative to reference sediments beyond the farm and/or prior to the farm operation. One in every four farms sampled was set over environments that export, rather than retain materials. For the farms that were placed over depositional environments, where sediment accumulation could be quantified, the thickness of sediment layers and stocks of carbon accumulated below the farms increased with farm age, reaching 140 ton C ha-1 for the oldest farm, and tended to exceed those in reference sediments beyond the farm and/or prior to the operation of the farms. Organic carbon burial rates in the farm sediments averaged (± SE) 1.87 ± 0.73 ton CO2 equivalent (CO2-eq) ha-1 year-1 (median 0.83, range 0.10 – 8.99 ton CO2-eq ha-1 year-1), twice the average (± SE) burial rate in reference sediments (0.90 ± 0.27, median 0.64, range 0.10-3.00 ton CO2-eq ha-1 year-1), so that the excess organic carbon burial attributable to the seaweed farms averaged 1.06 ± 0.74 ton CO2-eq ha-1 year-1 (median 0.09, range −0.13-8.10 ton CO2-eq ha-1 year-1). This first direct quantification of carbon burial in sediments below seaweed farms confirms that, when placed over depositional environments, seaweed farming tend to sequester carbon in the underlying sediments, but do so at widely variable rates, increasing with farm yield.
Highly Stable Rice-Straw-derived Charcoal in 3700-Year-old Ancient Paddy Soil: Evidence for an Effective Pathway Toward Carbon Sequestration.

Abstract:Recalcitrant charcoal application is predicted to decelerate global warming through creating a long-term carbon sink in soil. Although many studies have showed high stability of charcoal derived from woody materials, few have focused on the dynamics of straw-derived charcoal in natural environment on a long timescale to evaluate its potential for agricultural carbon sequestration. Here, we examined straw-derived charcoal in an ancient paddy soil dated from ~3700 calendar year before present (cal. year BP). Analytical results showed that soil organic matter consisted of more than 25% of charcoal in charcoal-rich layer. Similarities in morphology and molecular structure between the ancient and the fresh rice-straw-derived charcoal indicated that ancient charcoal was derived from rice straw. The lower carbon content, higher oxygen content, and obvious carbonyl of the ancient charcoal compared with fresh rice straw charcoal implied that oxidation occurred in the scale of thousands years. However, the dominant aromatic C of ancient charcoal indicated that rice-straw-derived charcoal was highly stable in the buried paddy soil due to its intrinsic chemical structures and the physical protection of ancient paddy wetland. Therefore, it may suggest that straw charcoal application is a potential pathway for C sequestration considering its longevity.

Abstract:Northern peatlands store ~30% of the world's soil carbon. This carbon sequestration is due to slow decomposition, as illustrated by ancient wooden artefacts and 'bog bodies' preserved over millennia. Such artefacts suggest that carbon could be captured externally and stored long term in peat. However, whether such carbon would remain stable following lowered water tables is not known. Here, we show that adding woody litter results in preservation of the exogenous carbon, as well as protection of soil carbon within the host ecosystem from severe drought, as a result of leached polyphenolics. These compounds not only inhibit microbial extracellular and intracellular metabolism but also deprive microbial growth of iron and substrates such as carbon and nitrogen. Our results suggest that this technique harnesses natural ecosystem resilience mechanisms and may have implications for new carbon-farming approaches.

Abstract:Significance The Bengal Fan is the largest sedimentary deposit in the world and has previously been shown to represent a major sink of carbon that may have contributed to the Cenozoic cooling trend. Wood transport has been observed in rivers during the high flows of the monsoon season, or associated with events such as cyclones, earthquake-triggered landslide and dam-and-release events from the mountains. However, wood was not widely thought to survive export and burial in the oceans. This study shows that woody debris can survive thousands of kilometers of transport in rivers and in turbidites, to be deposited in the fan. Wood has been overlooked in quantification of organic carbon burial on continental margins.
Influence of reforestation tree species on decomposition of larch stumps and coarse roots: role of wood microbial communities and soil properties

Abstract:Abstract Stumps and coarse roots are the most important coarse woody debris component in managed forests. However, their decomposition is still poorly understood, especially the influence of the characteristics of the microbial communities on wood decomposition. In this study, we investigated decaying larch (Larix olgensis Henry) stumps and coarse roots in reforestations of birch (Betula pendula Roth.), ash (Fraxinus mandshurica Rupr.), pine (Pinus sylvestris var. Mongolica), and larch in the northeast of China. We measured wood density loss, cellulose, and lignin concentrations, analyzed microbial community composition, and assessed the physical and chemical properties of woodland soils. Our findings reveal that larch stumps and coarse roots experienced the most rapid decomposition within birch reforestation areas, exhibiting significant density loss in stumps (33.84%) and coarse roots (43.68%). Bacterial diversity on larch stumps and coarse roots was highest in birch reforestation, with dominant phyla including Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, and Bacteroidota. Fungal diversity was also highest in birch reforestation, with Ascomycota as the dominant phylum in larch stumps and coarse roots. Furthermore, a mantel test analysis indicated that soil pH and temperature were significant factors in wood decomposition which affected microbial communities. This suggests that the choice of the reforestation tree species affects the decomposition of stumps and coarse roots by affecting soil properties and wood microbial communities. Understanding this process is vital for refining carbon balance evaluations, and enhancing ecosystem-level carbon modeling.

Abstract:To mitigate the environmental impact of forestry waste, this study presents an innovative approach to convert waste bamboo chips (WB) into high-value activated carbon via pyrolysis, followed by KOH activation of the resulting semi-coke (SC). This process produces activated carbon with an exceptionally high specific surface area, suitable for CO 2 adsorption applications. We employed comprehensive thermogravimetric analysis (TG), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) to characterize the pyrolysis behavior and reaction kinetics of WB. The primary mass loss in WB pyrolysis, amounting to 82.8 wt.%, occurs during devolatilization at 270–430 °C. The Coats-Redfern method estimates an average activation energy of 64.2 kJ/mol. The pyrolysis gas predominantly comprises carbon-containing components. Optimal activation with a KOH-to-biochar ratio of 2:1 yielded activated carbon with a surface area of 2883 m 2 /g. This activated carbon demonstrated a maximum CO 2 adsorption capacity of 4.14 mmol/g. The successful application of WB pyrolysis products in bioenergy illustrates its potential for diverse environmental applications.

Abstract:Porous carbon has been constructed in various strategies for hydrogen storage. In this work, a simple-effective strategy was proposed to transform sustainable biomass into porous carbon by degrade partial lignin and hemicellulose with Na2SO3 and NaOH aqueous mixture. This method collapses the biomass structure to provide more active sites, and also avoid the generation and accumulation of non-porous carbon nanosheets. As a result, the as-prepared sample possesses high specific surface area (2849 m2 g−1) and large pore volume (1.08 cm3 g−1) concentrating almost completely on micropore. Benefit to these characteristics, the as-prepared sample exhibits appealing hydrogen storage capacity of 3.01 wt% at 77 K, 1 bar and 0.85 wt% at 298 K, 50 bar. The isosteric heat of hydrogen adsorption is as high as 8.0 kJ mol−1, which is superior to the most biochars. This strategy is of great significance to the conversion of biomass and the preparation of high-performance hydrogen storage materials.

Abstract:A considerable amount of biomass ashes, resulting from agricultural waste field burning, wildfire, and solid biofuel incineration, is typically discarded in field or stored in dumps, where the alkaline oxides (CaO, MgO) they contain undergo carbonation and weathering-erosion processes over extended periods, continuously absorbing CO 2 from the atmosphere and soil. However, their CO 2 absorption behavior under natural conditions remains insufficiently explored in China. Using life cycle assessment (LCA) and material flow analysis (MFA) methods, this study developed a CO 2 absorption analysis model for biomass ashes under natural conditions. We estimated the CO 2 absorption of 9 different types of biomass ash from 1950 to 2022 through Monte Carlo uncertainty simulation. The results show that biomass ashes in China absorbed approximately 24.17Mt/year (95 % CI, 11.10–43.56) of CO 2 under nature conditions, with the annual average CO 2 uptake showing a steady increase from 1950 to 2022. The total CO 2 uptake reached 856.85Mt (95 % CI, 368.73–1526.01) over these decades, mainly due to the significant contribution of biomass ash produced by domestic straw burning and fuelwood combustion, which accounted for 51.97 % and 22.08 %, respectively. Our findings highlight the substantial carbon sink benefits of biomass ash, providing valuable insights for further studies on carbon cycles in natural ecosystems and the potential integration of biomass ash in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies.

Abstract:This implementation guidance focuses on carbon removal and sequestration via wood harvesting and storage (WHS), a process where woody biomass, with the embedded carbon, is stored for long timescales in shallow geologic storage. The engineering structure designed to ensure such durable storage by preventing biomass decomposition is called a Wood Vault. This guidance contains the requirements for a basic Wood Vault project, and is intended to aid project developers, verifiers, and registries in this space. It describes a set of requirements that govern the end-to-end process of carbon removal and sequestration. This includes carbon accounting, wood sourcing via wood residual (WR) utilization, Wood Vault construction and maintenance, as well as processes for monitoring, verification, and credit issuance. Carbon accounting requirements include baseline, or counterfactual specification, and full life cycle analysis (LCA) within a specified process boundary. For the vault itself, the guidance describes a buried vault with the burial chamber covered by a layer of low permeability material to create anoxic condition. Other types of vaults can also be used to adjust to local environmental, transport, and economic constraints. Monitoring and verification requirements include in-situ sensors, gas sampling, sample excavations, and site maintenance. This guidance also contemplates land ownership and legal assurances, as well as environmental and societal impact assessments. The implementation guidance concludes with recommendations regarding auditing, certification and carbon credit issuance.

Evaluation of long-term carbon sequestration of biochar in soil with biogeochemical field model

Abstract:Return of biomass-derived biochar (BC) into soil has been considered as one of the carbon sequestration (CS) methods. It is important to evaluate the long-term biochar CS potential by integrating the complex physical interferences and biochemical reactions in real soil. This study incorporated biochar into a biogeochemical field model and established a daily-resolution simulator to assess 5-, 50-, 500-year CS potential upon Soil-Biochar-Plant interaction. Through the scenario simulation of burying 7.5-75 t/ha BC-C in a 50 cm-depth rainfed cropland soil with corn planted, we found biochar could retain 483-557 kg C/t BC-C after 500 years' natural decomposition, although soil pedoturbation and plant erosion accelerated its mineralization. Moreover, biochar provided labile-C to compensate microbial decomposition and modified long-term soil climate, resulting in a decrease in soil organic carbon degradation of 44-265 kg C/t BC-C. Furthermore, biochar promoted plant photosynthetic performance by offering exogenous nutrients, equivalent to capturing 66-1039 kg C/t BC-C over 50 years. But biochar limited endogenous nutrient release and inhibited plant growth after exogenous nutrients exhausted, so total CS decreases yearly after reaching an upper limit (1030-1722 kg C/t BC-C). A total of 651-725 kg C/t BC-C could be sequestered after 500 years. And biochar is more potential in infertile and arid soils. Overall, this study indicates the necessity of taking the biogeochemical reactions into consideration to assess biochar long-term CS, and it further demonstrates biochar soil implementation is a prospective carbon-negative strategy.
