Abstract:Harnessing natural solutions to mitigate climate change requires an understanding of carbon fixation, flux, and sequestration across ocean habitats. Recent studies have suggested that exported seaweed particulate organic carbon is stored within soft-sediment systems. However, very little is known about how seaweed detritus disperses from coastlines, or where it may enter seabed carbon stores, where it could become the target of conservation efforts. Here, focusing on regionally dominant seaweed species, we surveyed environmental DNA (eDNA) from natural coastal sediments, and studied their connectivity to seaweed habitats using a particle tracking model parameterized to reproduce seaweed detritus dispersal behavior based on laboratory observations of seaweed fragment degradation and sinking. Experiments showed that seaweed detritus density changed over time, differently across species. This, in turn, modified distances traveled by released fragments until they reached the seabed for the first time, during model simulations. Dispersal pathways connected detritus from the shore to the open ocean but, importantly, also to coastal sediments, and this was reflected by field eDNA evidence. Dispersion pathways were also affected by hydrodynamic conditions, varying in space and time. Both the properties and timing of released detritus, individual to each macroalgal population, and short-term near-seabed and medium-term water-column transport pathways, are thus seemingly important in determining the connectivity between seaweed habitats and potential sedimentary sinks. Studies such as this one, supported by further field verification of sedimentary carbon sequestration rates and source partitioning, are still needed to help quantify the role of seaweed in the ocean carbon cycle. Such studies will provide vital evidence to inform on the potential need to develop blue carbon conservation mechanisms, beyond wetlands.

Abstract:The hypothesis that seaweed farming contributes to carbon burial below the farms was tested by quantifying burial rates in 20 seaweed farms distributed globally, ranging from 2 to 300 years in operation and from 1 ha to 15,000 ha in size. This involved combining analyses of organic carbon density with sediment accumulation rate in sediments below seaweed farms relative to reference sediments beyond the farm and/or prior to the farm operation. One in every four farms sampled was set over environments that export, rather than retain materials. For the farms that were placed over depositional environments, where sediment accumulation could be quantified, the thickness of sediment layers and stocks of carbon accumulated below the farms increased with farm age, reaching 140 ton C ha-1 for the oldest farm, and tended to exceed those in reference sediments beyond the farm and/or prior to the operation of the farms. Organic carbon burial rates in the farm sediments averaged (± SE) 1.87 ± 0.73 ton CO2 equivalent (CO2-eq) ha-1 year-1 (median 0.83, range 0.10 – 8.99 ton CO2-eq ha-1 year-1), twice the average (± SE) burial rate in reference sediments (0.90 ± 0.27, median 0.64, range 0.10-3.00 ton CO2-eq ha-1 year-1), so that the excess organic carbon burial attributable to the seaweed farms averaged 1.06 ± 0.74 ton CO2-eq ha-1 year-1 (median 0.09, range −0.13-8.10 ton CO2-eq ha-1 year-1). This first direct quantification of carbon burial in sediments below seaweed farms confirms that, when placed over depositional environments, seaweed farming tend to sequester carbon in the underlying sediments, but do so at widely variable rates, increasing with farm yield.

Abstract:Saltmarshes are suffering from severe degradation due to anthropogenic activities, leading to the loss of blue carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Given the significant potential of biochar in mitigating climate change, adding biochar to saltmarshes would alleviate this situation. This study investigated the effects of different biochar (made from Spartina alterniflora , corn straw, and Laminaria japonica ) and their aged biochar on the carbon fraction contents, GHG emissions, and microbial community structure of saltmarsh soils with allochthonous organic matter ( Enteromorpha prolifera ) addition. After 60 days of incubation, total organic carbon (TOC) loss and global warming potential (GWP) of biochar-amended soils were reduced by 67.29–124.33% and 4.91–123.24%, respectively ( p < 0.05). Biochar reduced the proportion of labile carbon (dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC)) in organic carbon by 61.92–86.15% ( p < 0.05). In addition, biochar reduced the relative abundance of specific functional bacteria (inc. cellulolysis, aromatic compound degradation, and xylanolysis) involved in organic carbon decomposition by 20.02–37.82% ( p < 0.05). These results suggest that even in the presence of high levels of liable organic matter, the application of biochar to saltmarshes has a sustained effect in promoting carbon accumulation and reducing GHG emissions, and this effect is regulated by a decrease of functional bacteria associated with carbon metabolism. Therefore, the in situ study of biochar on restoring carbon sink function of saltmarshes is proposed for practical engineering in future. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:We describe a scalable, economical solution to the carbon dioxide problem. CO 2 is captured from the atmosphere by plants, and the harvested vegetation is then buried in an engineered dry biolandfill. Plant biomass can be preserved for hundreds to thousands of years by burial in a dry environment with sufficiently low thermodynamic " Water Activity, " which is the relative humidity in equilibrium with the biomass. Maintaining a dry environment within the engineered dry biolandfill is assisted by salt that preserves biomass, which has been known since Biblical times. A "Water Activity" <60%, assisted by salt, will not support life, suppressing anaerobic organisms, thus preserving the biomass for thousands of years. Current agricultural costs, and biolandfill costs, indicate US$60/tonne of sequestered CO 2 which corresponds to ~US$0.53 per gallon of gasoline. The technology is scalable owing to the large area of land available for nonfood biomass sources. If biomass production is scaled to the level of a major crop, existing CO 2 can be extracted from the atmosphere, and will simultaneously sequester a significant fraction of world CO 2 emissions.

Abstract:Significance The Bengal Fan is the largest sedimentary deposit in the world and has previously been shown to represent a major sink of carbon that may have contributed to the Cenozoic cooling trend. Wood transport has been observed in rivers during the high flows of the monsoon season, or associated with events such as cyclones, earthquake-triggered landslide and dam-and-release events from the mountains. However, wood was not widely thought to survive export and burial in the oceans. This study shows that woody debris can survive thousands of kilometers of transport in rivers and in turbidites, to be deposited in the fan. Wood has been overlooked in quantification of organic carbon burial on continental margins.

Abstract:Coastal vegetated ecosystems are key-nature based solutions in climate change mitigations. Mangroves, seagrass meadows and saltmarshes contribute to carbon sequestration not only through the storage of biomass and sediments, but also through the secretion of dissolved organic carbon over their root system. Macro- and microalgae release most of their produced organic carbon as exudates, exported away from their origin, leading to underrepresentation of their contribution in blue carbon assessments. Here, we analysed 93 sediment cores of coastal vegetated ecosystems from temperate to tropical regions. We used polysaccharides as bioindicators of carbon sequestration to trace carbon from source to sink in different ecosystems. By binding of specific monoclonal antibodies, algal-derived polysaccharides were detected in sediments of coastal vegetated ecosystems. The relative abundance of the main building blocks of polysaccharides, monosaccharides was consistent across all 93 sediment cores, with no significant differences, despite the varying ecosystems and locations. Our findings suggest that the restoration of plant ecosystems, fixing carbon, protecting coasts and enhance biodiversity should also be enumerated for the stored carbon from distant donors. Hence carbon sequestration is a collective or synergistic process of different photosynthetic organisms.

Abstract:Abstract Natural processes and human activities produce vast amounts of dead vegetation which return CO 2 to the atmosphere through decay and combustion. If such vegetation could be converted into biocoal and sequestered on the ocean floor, it could reduce the accumulation of atmospheric CO 2 without involving sequestration in the form of CO 2 . Given that raw vegetation is unsuitable for large-scale energy applications, a process was developed to convert raw vegetation into a form of biocoal, termed Black Pellets, that solves the logistical and energy conversion problems of using raw vegetation for power generation. Seemingly overlooked is that properties of Black Pellets—higher density than seawater and resistance to microbial decay—may offer an environmentally safe way of sequestering vegetation carbon on the sea floor. Sequestering vegetation carbon by depositing biocoal as Black Pellets in the deep ocean (oceanic sequestration of biocoal—OSB) would be a means of achieving long-lasting negative emissions. Sacrificing the energy content of the deposited pellets would require substituting energy from other sources. If the substitute energy could be from lower-carbon natural gas or carbon-free sources, the effects would be less accumulation of atmospheric CO 2 compared to using the pellets for energy and a nearly 60 to 100% reduction in the need for geologic sequestration compared to bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS). If confirmed by research, OSB would be an addition to the sparse toolbox of negative emission technologies (NETs) which would give humankind more flexibility in meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Abstract:Scientific, safe, economical and profitable management of the unprecedented amounts of waste generated across the globe is a major environmental challenge. Conversion of biomass into carbon-rich materials has emerged as a promising sustainable waste management strategy. Biochar and hydrochar are porous and versatile carbon-rich biomaterials with excellent soil amending, adsorptive and catalytic properties. However, not much is known on the structural diversity, potential and limitations in the production of these carbon compounds derived from aquatic plant biomass and no exclusive comprehensive review exists on the same. This work focuses on the detailed use, status, scope and potential of different aquatic biomass, like duckweed, water hyacinth, water lettuce and Azolla, for the production of biochar and hydrochar, that are found to have a large-scale application in agriculture, environment and allied fields. Use of aquatic waste as a raw material does not impact food production, habitat or soil conservation, and further aids in sustainable waste management, value generation from waste biomass and enhanced climate change mitigation concomitantly. However, toxicity, economic sustainability of production and a cradle to grave analysis of the nature and function of aquatic biomass-derived carbon materials need more research. Nevertheless, use of non-land biomass for biochar and hydrochar production ensures a steady supply of raw material for various commercial applications, while at the same time making available the land-based biomass for other products such as biofuel and compost.

Abstract:Abstract BackgroundClimate change motivates consideration of alternative energy, including solar energy and conversion of biomass to fuel.ResultsIt is suggested here that a more economical way of reducing CO2 emission would be to preserve existing biomass with salt, and perhaps other sterilizing agents. It is found that the required solar energy to produce the salt from ocean water can produce an order of magnitude more mass in salt than the mass of combusted carbon needed to yield an equivalent amount of energy.ConclusionsPreservation, by salt alone, of biomass in the amount needed to offset global use of fossil fuel - would presently require increasing the world's salt production by an order of magnitude or so. On the other hand, this would require much less area per unit of avoided CO2 emission than converting solar energy directly to electricity.

Abstract:Six-times more carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is removed each year by terrestrial photosynthesis than fossil fuel emissions. However, the carbon is mostly returned to the atmosphere by decomposition. We found a 3775-year-old ancient wood log buried 2 meters belowground that was preserved far beyond its expected lifetime. The wood had near-perfect preservation, with carbon loss less than 5% compared to a modern sample. The lack of decay is likely due to the low permeability of the compact clay soil at the burial site. Our observation suggests a hybrid nature-engineering approach for carbon removal by burying woody biomass in similar anoxic environments. We estimate a global sequestration potential of up to 10 gigatonnes CO 2 per year with existing technology at a low cost of 100 per tonne after optimization.

Abstract:Blue carbon sequestration in seagrass meadows has been proposed as a low-risk, nature-based solution to offset carbon emissions and reduce the effects of climate change. Although the timescale of seagrass carbon burial is too short to offset emissions of ancient fossil fuel carbon, it has a role to play in reaching net zero within the modern carbon cycle. This review documents and discusses recent advances (from 2015 onwards) in the field of seagrass blue carbon. The net burial of carbon is affected by seagrass species, meadow connectivity, sediment bioturbation, grainsize, the energy of the local environment, and calcium carbonate formation. The burial rate of organic carbon can be calculated as the product of the sediment accumulation rate below the mixed layer and the burial concentration of organic carbon attributable to seagrass. A combination of biomarkers can identify seagrass material more precisely than bulk isotopes alone. The main threats related to climate change are sea-level rise, leading to a shoreline squeeze, and temperature rise, particularly during extreme events such as heat domes. In conclusion, some of the disagreement in the literature over methodology and the main controls on organic carbon burial likely results from real, regional differences in seagrasses and their habitat. Inter-regional collaboration could help to resolve the methodological differences and provide a more robust understanding of the global role of blue carbon sequestration in seagrass meadows.

Residence Times and Legacy of Biogenic Carbon in Ocean Reservoirs

Abstract:Quantifying the sequestration potential of biologically driven carbon fluxes in the ocean depends critically on residence times – how long carbon remains stored in reservoirs before being re-exposed to the atmosphere. Simple mass balance provides estimates for many of the major ocean biogenic carbon reservoirs. For vegetated coastal ecosystems (mangroves, sea grass meadows, salt marshes) that globally store 20 to 40 PgC, this is 200 to 500 years, while for the biological carbon pump, a reservoir of about 2000 PgC, it is between 200 to 800 years. Over these time scales respective reservoirs reach equilibrium if left undisturbed. Importantly, near equilibrium of ocean reservoirs during the Holocene can be inferred from the near steady atmospheric concentrations during this period. The degradation of habitats and the over-exploitation of living marine resources particularly in the last 75 years have tipped these natural processes out of balance, to the extent where many are now net emitters of legacy carbon back to the atmosphere. The analysis exposes a conflict between how sequestration is reported in oceanographic literature and how it is understood with regards durable carbon capture and storage. Nature-based solutions can be sought to address parts of the climate crisis, by improving ecosystem health and biodiversity, but are unlikely to provide solutions to carbon management on a scale commensurate with anthropogenic emissions. The best we can do is to limit net emissions by restoring what we can, and to ensure that future practices do not further tip ocean carbon reservoirs out of balance.

Abstract:Abstract Ensuring that global warming remains <2 °C requires rapid CO 2 emissions reduction. Additionally, 100–900 gigatons CO 2 must be removed from the atmosphere by 2100 using a portfolio of CO 2 removal (CDR) methods. Ocean afforestation, CDR through basin-scale seaweed farming in the open ocean, is seen as a key component of the marine portfolio. Here, we analyse the CDR potential of recent re-occurring trans-basin belts of the floating seaweed Sargassum in the (sub)tropical North Atlantic as a natural analogue for ocean afforestation. We show that two biogeochemical feedbacks, nutrient reallocation and calcification by encrusting marine life, reduce the CDR efficacy of Sargassum by 20–100%. Atmospheric CO 2 influx into the surface seawater, after CO 2 -fixation by Sargassum , takes 2.5–18 times longer than the CO 2 -deficient seawater remains in contact with the atmosphere, potentially hindering CDR verification. Furthermore, we estimate that increased ocean albedo, due to floating Sargassum , could influence climate radiative forcing more than Sargassum -CDR. Our analysis shows that multifaceted Earth-system feedbacks determine the efficacy of ocean afforestation.

Abstract:The battle to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent the most dangerous consequences of climate change will be waged across multiple fronts, including efforts to increase energy efficiency; efforts to deploy nonfossil fuel sources, including renewable and nuclear energy; and investment in adaptation to reduce the impacts of the climate change that will occur regardless of the actions we take. But with more than 80% of the world's energy coming from fossil fuel, winning the battle also requires capturing CO2 from large stationary sources and storing that CO2 in geologic repositories. Offshore geological repositories have received relatively little attention as potential CO2 storage sites, despite their having a number of important advantages over onshore sites, and should be considered more closely.

Abstract:Benthic metabolism and net carbon accumulation in mangroves sediments strongly depend on the quantity and quality of organic matter (OM) supplied, including material brought by coastal waters such as the macroalgae Sargassum spp. Mesocosms were used to assess the effect of eutrophication by Sargassum on mangrove sediments. The concentration of fatty acids (FAs), organic carbon and its carbon isotopic signature, and the sediments–air CO2 fluxes were used to follow the evolution of sedimentary OM in surface and subsurface sediments for 60 d. Sargassum beaching shifted microbial and crab metabolism, leading to a preferential degradation of the labile fraction of OM from both Sargassum (δ13C = −17.7‰ and high concentration of essential FAs) and mangrove leaves (δ13C: −28.9‰ and high concentrations of 18:2ω6 and 18:3ω3). Fatty acids composition of crabs hepatopancreas revealed they preferentially fed on Sargassum and these invertebrates also increased the particulate OM tidal export. In addition, microbial activity at the sediment surface was enhanced, as revealed by strong production of branched FAs and higher CO2 fluxes in mesocosms containing Sargassum. However, Sargassum beaching also increased the transfer and preservation of more refractory OM from mangrove leaves found in higher quantity in subsurface sediments (6–8 cm) after 60 d. Inputs of macroalgae induced a negative priming effect and enhanced the preservation of blue carbon in the sediments. This negative priming effect was enhanced by crab activities. These biotic interactions that include microbial communities apparently make mangrove efficient in storing carbon in a context of growing eutrophication of the tropical ocean.

Abstract:Abstract Background Wood harvesting and storage (WHS) is a hybrid Nature-Engineering combination method to combat climate change by harvesting wood sustainably and storing it semi-permanently for carbon sequestration. To date, the technology has only been purposefully tested in small-scale demonstration projects. This study aims to develop a concrete way to carry out WHS at large-scale. Results We describe a method of constructing a wood storage facility, named Wood Vault, that can bury woody biomass on a mega-tonne scale in specially engineered enclosures to ensure anaerobic environments, thus preventing wood decay. The buried wood enters a quasi-geological reservoir that is expected to stay intact semi-permanently. Storing wood in many environments is possible, leading to seven versions of Wood Vault: (1) Burial Mound (Tumulus or Barrow), (2) Underground (Pit, Quarry, or Mine), (3) Super Vault, (4) Shelter, (5) AquaOpen or AquaVault with wood submerged under water, (6) DesertOpen or DesertVault in dry regions, (7) FreezeVault in cold regions such as Antarctica. Smaller sizes are also possible, named Baby Vault. A prototype Wood Vault Unit (WVU) occupies 1 hectare (ha, 100 m by 100 m) of surface land, 20 m tall, stores up to 100,000 m 3 of wood, sequestering 0.1 MtCO 2 . A 1 MtCO 2 y −1 sequestration rate can be achieved by collecting currently unused wood residuals (WR) on an area of 25,000 km 2 , the size of 10 typical counties in the eastern US, corresponding to an average transportation distance of less than 100 km. After 30 years of operation, such a Wood Vault facility would have sequestered 30 MtCO 2 , stored in 300 WVUs, occupying a land surface of 300 ha. The cost is estimated at $10–50/tCO 2 with a mid-point price of $30/tCO 2 . To sequester 1 GtCO 2 y −1 , wood can be sourced from currently unexploited wood residuals on an area of 9 Mkm 2 forested land (9 million square kilometers, size of the US), corresponding to a low areal harvesting intensity of 1.1 tCO 2 ha −1 y −1 . Alternatively, giga-tonne scale carbon removal can be achieved by harvesting wood at a medium harvesting intensity of 4 tCO 2 ha −1 y −1 on 3 Mkm 2 of forest (equivalent to increasing current world wood harvest rate by 25%), or harvest on 0.8 Mkm 2 forest restored from past Amazon deforestation at high harvest intensity, or many combinations of these and other possibilities. It takes 1000 facilities as discussed above to store 1 GtCO 2 y −1 , compared to more than 6000 landfills currently in operation in the US. After full closure of a Wood Vault, the land can be utilized for recreation, agriculture, solar farm, or agrivoltaics. A more distributed small operator model (Baby Vault) has somewhat different operation and economic constraints. A 10 giga-tonne sequestration rate siphons off only 5% of total terrestrial net primary production, thus possible with WHS, but extreme caution needs to be taken to ensure sustainable wood sourcing. Conclusions Our technical and economic analysis shows that Wood Vault can be a powerful tool to sequester carbon reliably, using a variety of wood sources. Most pieces of the technology already exist, but they need to be put together efficiently in practice. Some uncertainties need to be addressed, including how durability of buried wood depends on detailed storage methods and burial environment, but the science and technology are known well enough to believe the practicality of the method. The high durability, verifiability and low-cost makes it already an attractive option in the current global carbon market. Woody biomass stored in Wood Vaults is not only a carbon sink to combat current climate crisis, but also a valuable resource for the future that can be used as biomass/bioenergy and carbon supply. The quantity of this wood utilization can be controlled carefully to maintain a desired amount of CO 2 in the atmosphere to keep the Earth’s climate from diving into the next ice age, acting as a climate thermostat. The CO 2 drawdown time is on the order of 100 years while the ramp-up time is a decade. A sense of urgency is warranted because the CO 2 removal rate is limited by biosphere productivity, thus delayed action means a loss of opportunity. In conclusion, WHS provides a tool for managing our Earth system, which will likely remain forever in the Anthropocene.

Beach-cast Seagrass Wrack Contributes Substantially to Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Abstract:Seagrass ecosystems have received a great deal of attention recently for their ability to capture and store carbon, thereby helping to mitigate climate change. However, their carbon-sink capacity could be offset somewhat if exported plant material - which accounts for similar to 90% of total leaf production - undergoes microbial breakdown and is emitted into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas. Here we measured emissions (CO2 and CH4) from the breakdown of exported seagrass plant material, focusing on beach-cast 'wrack'. We tested two seagrass species; Zostera nigricaulis and Amphibolis antarctica, which have contrasting morphologies and chemistries. We found that both species of wrack were substantial sources of CO2, but not CH4, during the decomposition process. Biomass loss and the coinciding CO2 emissions occurred over the 30-day experiment, and the pattern of CO2 emissions over this time followed a double exponential model (R-2 > 0.92). The initial flux rate was relatively high, most likely due to rapid leaching of labile compounds, then decreased substantially within the 2-9 days, and stabilizing at < 3 mu mol g(-1) d(-1) during the remaining decomposition period. Additionally, seagrass wrack cast high up on beaches that remained dry had 72% lower emissions than wrack that was subjected to repeated wetting in the intertidal zone. This implies that relocation of seagrass wrack by coastal resource managers (e.g. from water's edge to drier dune areas) could help to reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions. Scaling up, we estimate the annual CO2-C flux from seagrass wrack globally is between 1.31 and 19.04 Tg C yr(-1), which is equivalent to annual emissions of 0.63-9.19 million Chinese citizens. With climate change and increasing coastal development expected to accelerate the rate of wrack accumulation on beaches, this study provides timely information for developing coastal carbon budgets.
